Full textMy doctoral thesis presents a deduction from three-dimensional electroelasticity of a linear theory of electroelastic plates which are capable of thickness oscillations. None of the classical, purely mechanical, plate theories can handle thickness deformations, but these are important when piezoelectric actuators and sensors under form of plates are employed. When electrical variables are ignored, the present model is a variant of Reissner-Mindlin’s model, where a kinematical descriptor of thickness strain, as well as a corresponding dynamical descriptor (called a force center), are introduced. Of course, work-conjugate “kinematical” and “dynamical” descriptors are introduced also for the nonmechanical fields. In the thesis, the governing equations of both tridimensional and bidimensional problems of electroelasticity are presented, in the variational and differential formats. Moreover, starting from the variational formulation, a bidimensional electroelastical finite-element is obtained which accounts for thickness vibrations.

Full textThe aim of the current study is to carry out numerical models that can support the analysis of thermal and structural phenomenon related to the design and realization of welding: this activity is divided in turn in the study of the number and the speed of passes, the thermal powers involved, the correct representation of the material behaviour, the choice of the restraints’ placement, the evaluation of the final strains and stresses in the joint and so on. This study activity has made use of Ansys Release 11 finite element code that has been revealed suitable to represent TIG and laser welding. The results of numerical calculations have been compared with the experimental data recorded in the ENEA laboratories. These butt-welding experimental tests between two plates of INCONEL 625 are the ones planned in the field of the design of IGNITOR tokamak, a machine for the nuclear fusion study. In a preliminary way some general considerations have been developed relative to the physical aspects of the phenomenon, its classification and the corresponding rules.

Full textOrthotropic deck bridges are widely used in bridge engineering, especially for long span bridges. Although orthotropic deck bridges have many advantages, it is found that they are sensitive to produce fatigue cracking under the repeating vehicle loading since there are a large number of welded connections in the deck structure. Among of these connections, rib-to-deck plate connection, rib-to-diaphragm connection and rib-to-diaphragm-to-deck plate (RDDP) connection are the three typical welded connections that are more sensitive to the fatigue cracking due to the high concentrated stress and high residual stress. Fatigue analysis of an orthotropic deck is a complex and uncertain process due to many factors which can influence the fatigue cracking. A state-of-the-art literature review of the fatigue codes/specifications was conducted to identify their advantages, disadvantages and limitations in this study. Meanwhile, the stress performances of a typical orthotropic deck were analyzed through Finite Element analysis (FEA) and, then, the fatigue resistance evaluation was carried out by the structural hot spot stress method. In addition, a fatigue improvement technique, the Fluid Bed Peening (FBP) was illustrated, and fatigue tests of the specimens treated by FBP were conducted in the laboratory. The primary two goals of this study are to analyze the stress performances of the orthotropic deck and to develop an approach for improving the fatigue behaviors through FE method and analytical techniques, by doing parametric studies of various geometric parameters and the structural hot spot stress method. Many FE models were developed in order to analyze the stress influences of cutout geometry, with or without bulkhead, and the thickness of deck plate. The different applied loadings, which to simulate the different vehicle locations on the pavement, were used in order to obtain the maximum stress range. Then, submodels were developed based on the global analyses in order to obtain accurate stresses for calculating fatigue resistance, using the structural hot spot stress method. The fatigue analysis was done by the use of the structural hot spot stress method to quantify stress ranges for which there is no “nominal stress” database (that which is available in design codes for stress away from the concentration). Based on the analyses, a three-step approach is concluded and some suggestions are provided to bridge designers in this study which can be helpful for improving the design of orthotropic decks. Furthermore, a relatively new fatigue enhancement technique, FBP, is discussed based on simple fatigue tests. FBP as a technique of surface treatments can definitely improve the surface performance, and demands less operational parameters. Fatigue tests of four different groups were carried out under cyclic constant amplitude fatigue loading in the laboratory in order to study the effect of treatment of FBP. It is found that FBP not only can improve the fatigue life, but also sometime can remedy small fatigue cracks.

Full textMucosal Lesions in patients with autoimmune bullous diseases are the most difficult to manage and tend to relapse more frequently than skin lesions. Consequentially, these lesions have a very important impact on quality of life of affected patients. PRP has recently been approved for the treatment of dermatological diseases characterized by difficult-to-treat mucosal and cutaneous ulcerated lesions. The mechanism of action is based on the its well-known repairing capacity (structural and functional) and on its ability to stimulate tissue proliferation and regeneration. PRP is very safety and side effects have not been described so far. We have currently used platelet gel on 10 patients with MBA and, despite the small number, it was possible to observe an initial assessment of the effectiveness but also the limits of this treatment. All patients showed a rapid improvement in pain symptoms with a consequent improvement in the quality of life.

Full textIn recent years the protection of structures against hazardous vibration has gained special interest. Structures such as buildings, bridges and vehicles are subject to vibrations that may cause malfunctioning, un-comfort or collapse. It is an extended practice to install damping devices in order to mitigate such vibrations. Furthermore, when the dampers are controllable, the structure acts as an adaptronic system. Adaptronic systems are characterized by their abil- ity to respond to external loading conditions and adapt themselves to these changes. These abilities can be exploited to solve the vibration mitigation problems through the installation of controllable dampers and the design of appropriate control laws for an adequate actuation. These modern systems in the case of vehicle suspension systems o®er improved comfort and road hold- ing in varying driving and loading conditions compared to traditional passive devices.

Full textIn this dissertation, two fluid-structure interaction problems, related to different engineering applications, are analysed. In the first linear case, an analytical but effective model is formulated in order to correctly estimate the dynamic response of a quartz tuning fork (QTF) device immersed in a fluid environment. This kind of resonator is widely used for gas sensing applications. In the second nonlinear case, a numerical model is developed to get the aeroelastic response of thin cantilever flat plate, with a particular emphasis on the applicability of the inextensible plate theory to the structural modelling of the problem. Specifically, the main goal is to numerically predict flutter conditions and limit cycle oscillations (LCO) closer to experimental outcomes, since earlier model that makes use of Von Kármán thin plate theory overpredicts the LCO amplitude. In the first part, the linear fluid-structure interaction problem is analysed: the mathematical model concerning the dynamics of the resonator and its interaction with the surrounding fluid is presented, the experimental setup, used to asses the model, is described, the theoretical response is fitted on the experimental data and, finally, a discussion on how each parameter of the mathematical model can affect the overall system dynamics is provided. In the second part, where the nonlinear fluid-structure interaction case is studied, the mathematical model concerning the inextensible plate vibrating in low speed airflow is derived, the flutter condition and the limit cycle, in terms of amplitude and period, are calculated, and a comparison with Von Kármán plate structural model is provided with needed remarks on the obtained numerical results.

Full textThrough an examination of narrative sources this thesis demonstrates that the Polish elites were enthusiastic supporters of the idea of crusade within a decade of the First Crusade. This thesis shows that under the leadership of the Piast dynasty the Poles engaged in Christian holy war (proto-crusading): the conquest of Pomerania (1102–1128), contributed armies to three theatres of the Second Crusade (1147–1148), and launched major expeditions against the Prussian apostates (1166 and 1192).
This thesis identifies the influence of the idea of crusade on the actions of the Piasts and in particular, Boleslaw III’s sons (the Piast Juniors), and the importance of family traditions. The thesis presents new propositions in regards to the crusades in Prussia and key Polish crusader participants: the involvement of the Polish crusader army under the command of Mieszko III in the Wendish Crusade (July–August 1147); previously unreported in English historiography, the first known example of crusading in Prussia led by Boleslaw IV (November–December 1147); and Henry of Sandomierz’s leadership of the Polish crusader contingent to the Holy Land (1147–1148).
