Abstract:

The concept of public space, and particularly of civic public space, is certainly a constitutive element of Italy’s urban culture. The design and spatial configuration of public spaces have always been a synthesis between deeply rooted models and political functions (the piazza, the palazzo, the church, the civic buildings), and of local circumstances and design inspiration. Hence the fascination of the piazza: while all piazze perform similar functions, they take very different spatial and architectural characteristics, thus adding to the variety and the “magic”, as it were, of public space experience.
The main purpose of this article is to celebrate the piazza as the core symbol of public space magic. In doing so, I set a modest linguistic goal: to discourage non-Italian speaking piazza fans from using the plural “piazzas” and to impose the Italian “piazze”. As to the success of this endeavour, only future will tell.

Abstract:
Humans are social creatures who need the presence of others to complete their lives and have a place to do these activities. These needs are then the background for the formation of public space. With the changing times and technology, the need for a public space to do more and more activities. The space is referred to as the Third place by sociologist Ray Oldenburg. La Piazza is one place that can be called a Third place, but the place was closed because it was not going well. The purpose of this design is to reactivate the function of La Piazza as a Third place in Kelapa Gading. La Piazza Third place has a new design that emphasizes the concept of open architecture and architecture for the Third place as well as the concept of forests. so the design of the new building in addition to having spaces that are open to the public and community space, also gives the impression of being open and inviting as well as cool and calm. In this project, some existing structures in the old building were reused, such as basements, connectors to the parking building, connectors to the ivory coconut mall, and structures from the existing northern La Piazza building. There are 3 forest elements applied to buildings, namely water, greenery and sunlight. These 3 things can relax people with a lot of thoughts and stress about work, especially those who work in offices, according to Regent's University London research.

Erkelens, Casper J. "Perspective on Canaletto’s Paintings of Piazza San Marco in Venice." Art and Perception 8, no. 1 (March 4, 2020): 49–67. http://dx.doi.org/10.1163/22134913-20191131.

Abstract:
Perspective plays an important role in the creation and appreciation of depth on paper and canvas. Paintings of extant scenes are interesting objects for studying perspective, because such paintings provide insight into how painters apply different aspects of perspective in creating highly admired paintings. In this regard the paintings of the Piazza San Marco in Venice by Canaletto in the eighteenth century are of particular interest because of the Piazza’s extraordinary geometry, and the fact that Canaletto produced a number of paintings from similar but not identical viewing positions throughout his career. Canaletto is generally regarded as a great master of linear perspective. Analysis of nine paintings shows that Canaletto almost perfectly constructed perspective lines and vanishing points in his paintings. Accurate reconstruction is virtually impossible from observation alone because of the irregular quadrilateral shape of the Piazza. Use of constructive tools is discussed. The geometry of Piazza San Marco is misjudged in three paintings, questioning their authenticity. Sizes of buildings and human figures deviate from the rules of linear perspective in many of the analysed paintings. Shadows are stereotypical in all and even impossible in two of the analysed paintings. The precise perspective lines and vanishing points in combination with the variety of sizes for buildings and human figures may provide insight in the employed production method and the perceptual experience of a given scene.

Abstract:
Inspired and subject to individual experience, an in depth study of eleven piazzas yielded a set of Architectural elements, characterizing each piazza. Clearly, "intention" supplements their unique evolution, and the layered symbolism over time, throughout the urban fabric, emits a specific disposition within each piazza. The consistent refinement of particular conditions developing from common initial intentions may lead to a basic Architectural criteria. Though not accepted as a universal standard, this criteria produces a set of characteristics applicable to a multitude of open spaces; hence, like the Italian Piazza, “accomplished space”.

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis is to reexamine and reinterpret the iconography of the figurative mosaics in the villa at Piazza Armerina with a view to dating the mosaics and determining whether we are able to conclude that the decor is programmatic . The author, having reached the conclusion that the decor is a program, then analyses its meaning and the implications flowing from such conclusion as well as providing new insights relating to the use made of certain rooms within the villa. Subsidiarily, the thesis provides support to one of the current theories positing the identity of the owner of the villa

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
This rapid literature review finds that women have been disproportionately affected by Covid-19 in several ways. As the Covid-19 pandemic began, it was widely predicted that women would face worse outcomes than men in many spheres. This was based on evidence of pre-existing inequalities (e.g. the high share of women in informal work) and evidence from earlier disease outbreaks such as Ebola. Evidence from the past year and a half supports the idea that women have been disproportionately affected by Covid-19 in many of the issues investigated for this report. A wide-ranging World Bank review of evidence from April 2020 to April 2021 states that “women often appear to have lost out more than men economically and socially” (Nieves et al., 2021, p. 4). It was not possible to find evidence on the effect of Covid-19 on women’s role in the green economy and the effects of climate change (beyond calls for inclusive green growth), or on gender stereotyping in the media (although there is a small amount of literature on perceptions of women leaders during the pandemic). In all cases, the effect of Covid-19 and measures to suppress it have directly or indirectly continued or worsened pre-existing inequalities. In some instances, Covid-19 has created distinct difficulties for women (e.g. lockdowns and increased domestic violence). This report has found no evidence of Covid-19 improving the position of women in the areas of interest surveyed, beyond possible benefits from working from home for some women in high-income countries; and some suggestions that female leadership during the pandemic may lead to better perceptions of women (Piazza & Diaz, 2020). Studies also point to the intersection of gender with other factors, such as caste and ethnicity, leading to worse outcomes (Chen et al., 2021; Kabeer et al., 2021). In many cases, migrant women and women with disabilities are at an increased disadvantage. The report focuses on evidence from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and G7 members. It is not comprehensive but surveys the available evidence focusing on global, regional or synthesis evidence to provide a more representative coverage. It, therefore, does not cover every context or provide any country case studies and overlooks variations in some countries in favour of broader trends.

Abstract:
The ‘Promoting Sustainable Building in Bangladesh’ (PSBiB) project was implemented together with 3 partner organizations between 2016 and 2019. It aimed to reduce the negative impacts of the construction and house building industry in Bangladesh on the environment, livelihoods and communities, by enabling a transition from unsustainable Traditional Bricks (TB) to sustainable Alternative Building Blocks (AB). This Effectiveness Review examines the effectiveness and relevance of the PSBiB project, with a focus on policy changes and contributions to strengthening the country’s resilience. It adopted the Participatory Impact Assessment and Learning Approach (PIALA) as well as Contribution Tracing. The results provide evidence that the project’s strategies and interventions were significant and relevant in achieving the necessary changes in policies and legislation for promoting sustainable building materials and halting the extraction of topsoil from fertile land and protected areas. The evaluation also investigates the project’s contributions to triggering the market and to the capacities of resilience. Find out more by reading the full report now.

Full text
Abstract:
This evaluation is presented as part of the Effectiveness Review Series 2017/18. The Improving Urban WASH Governance and Accountability (IUWGA) project in Pakistan was selected for review under the ‘Sustainable Water’ thematic area. The overall objective of the project was to develop and pilot-test a local urban governance model that builds on a concept of collaborative rights and accountability relations as the basis for developing a new social contract between local authorities and citizens in new urban settlements.
