Full textThe aim of this research is to create a map of all the strategies of “Piccolo Teatro di Milano” related to theatre/audience relationship, about audience education and belonging of the spectator to the community. Three distinct units have been taken into examination, and these are partially superimposable on three historical periods of Piccolo Teatro's history, and are examples of different methods of action. 1) Foundation of “Piccolo Teatro di Milano”, and the planning background that precedes it, analyzed through the various newspaper articles by Paolo Grassi and Giorgio Strehler. In these articles, the major project guidelines are explained sooner than 1947; 2) Initiatives concerning the contact with a main audience, and creation of a connection with said audience, in the contemporary era of the Sixties. This has to be taken into consideration together with the great protest of an extra-theater context, that starting from the activity of the Piccolo Teatro, involve both the cultural and political milieu which surrounded the independence of artistic activity; 3) Development of a web activity, through social networks, websites and digital archives.

Full textThe dissertation presents the results of an articulated investigation on the TS for to describe its genealogy and its method, with reference to the experience of theatrical ateliers and labs, shows and feasts realized at the Alzheimer Cafè of Milan. Some relevant aspects came to light. The TS takes root in the Italian artistic movements during the Sixties and the Seventies and in the birth of the New Theatre. It progressively took on its own identity, employing the acquired for social aims. It is considered both a label to denominate all kinds of social theatrical methods, and a specific method with its criterions and purposes. Actually the TS integrates in its practice the different performative levels of representation, relationship and social action with the willfulness to produce, throughout the theatrical performative activities, a developing change in the individual’s life, in the group who participates at the atelier and in the social system involved, whether an organization or a local community. The unsolved issues are the inadequate evaluation systems, the nonrecognition of a specific professional role and of a shared and legitimate iter of training.

Full textStemmed from a democratic will of emancipation of the citizen and of working out of a new society, the public Theater, in France as well as in Italy, seems again to be a prey to a triple crisis (political, structural and artistic), since the turning point of 2000. This allows to question the political and symbolic connections which are at stake between art and society within institutional limits led by a public service mission. Through the examples of the “Théâtre National de Strasbourg” (TNS), Villeurbanne’s “Théâtre National Populaire” (TNP) and Milano’s “Piccolo Teatro”, the point is to consider the public Theater with the whole of its participants and constituents (esthetic, political, economic, symbolic, architectural and social) via the prism of their respective managers’ process and strategies of justification, in order to determine and explain the evolution of the institutions and the transformation of the duties they assume and implement. By distinguishing between the various strategies elaborated by the managers, we can give shape to the positions, held by the artists and the authorities towards the neo-liberal society and the institutional issues. These positions are linked and answer a contamination of the cultural sphere by the economic sphere. They reveal a division, increased by the role given to the audience, between the institutions, which try to compensate this contamination by ways of interactions and experimentations with the society, and those, which deplore this situation and answer it by standing aloof from reality and focusing on their conception of dramatic art

Full textIn the second half of the 18th century Milan became a very influent centre for the art of stage designing. This PhD thesis seeks to investigate the developments of the visual aspects of theatricality in a crucial period (1765-1792) for Milan. This study is based on iconographic sources, namely engravings and drawings. The analysis focuses on public and political events (wedding festivals, state funerals and royal entries) and, at the same time, on theatre. The research considers the development of stage design at the Regio Ducal Teatro and the Teatro alla Scala. It concentrates on the works of the most important scene-painters of the period: the brothers Fabrizio and Bernardino Galliari and Pietro Gonzaga. As a result, the study provides an analysis of the several components of visual representation and their features.

Full textIn the Triennium 1796-1799 took place the short life of the Cisalpine Republic, one of the political units founded by Napoleon Bonaparte during the Italian Campaign. This work studies the theatrical culture and the performing aspects which characterized the Cisalpine Republic and particularly its capital, Milan, in that historical juncture. The thesis asserted here is about the use of performing practices as an instrument of popular education and spreading of the principles of the 1789 Revolution. This aim was pursued by both French authorities and Italian pro-Revolution patriots. This work tackles three main points: the architectural and urban changes which affected Milan during the Triennium, the theory and practice of theatre, the public celebrations. The cultural relations between Italy and France have been investigated with special attention. This study is based on some documents kept in archives and libraries of Milan and Paris, such as printed editions of theatrical plays, records of celebrations, correspondence and periodicals from the age of the Cisalpine Republic.

Full textIn the Risorgimento some cultural factors contributed to the definition of the idea of national identity: readings that inspired patriots, writings they printed, symbols and myths that became part of their language, theatrical culture and theatricality and celebrations and rituals, considered like reason of aggregation, participation and transmission of civil virtues. This thesis examines relationships between rituals, theatre and libertarian feelings and civil values of the Risorgimento, in Milan, from 1815 to 1859.
