Abstract:
This chapter explores the contacts and conflict between novelistic point of view and the practice of cinematic spectatorship. It focuses on H. D.’s singular contributions to the film journal Close Up (1927–1933). This film criticism was an important context for developing the forms of prose experimentation that would occupy her during the early 1930s. In detaching vision from a presumed subject, H. D. found that film asks its viewers not only to see but to translate encrypted “abstract . . . remote . . . symbolical” meanings from the “raw-picked” images that pass across the screen. This litera

Abstract:
If iridium, the nuclear subtext of Rudolph Maté’s D.O.A. (1950) is oblique from an atomic perspective, from another, generic perspective (say, the classic investigative narrative of film noir), it’s virtually nonexistent, an anamorphic trick to explore the fate of sexuality and marriage, infidelity and adultery, masculinity and femininity in the age of the atomic bomb. Although the stolen iridium in D.O.A. is more immaterial than the microfilm canister in Pickup on South Street and less apocalyptic than the Pandora’s Box in Kiss Me Deadly, it nevertheless evokes a determinate “structure of fee

The authoritative source for information on the people, places, and events of the African Diaspora, spanning five continents and five centuries. The field of African Diaspora studies is rapidly growing. Until now there was no single, authoritative source for information on this broad, complex discipline. Drawing on the work of over 300 scholars, this encyclopedia fills that void. Now the researcher, from high school level up, can go to a single reference for information on the historical, political, economic, and cultural relations between people of African descent and the rest of the world co

Abstract:
For eight days in March 1970, over 200,000 postal workers staged an illegal "wildcat" strike--the largest in United States history--for better wages and working conditions. Picket lines started in New York and spread across the country like wildfire. Strikers defied court injunctions, threats of termination, and their own union leaders. In the negotiated aftermath, the U.S. Post Office became the U.S. Postal Service, and postal workers received full collective bargaining rights and wage increases, all the while continuing to fight for greater democracy within their unions.
