Full textThe Bluetooth standard is intended to provide short-range (10-100 meter) wireless connectivity between mobile and desktop devices. It was developed as a replacement for short cables, and has the ability to form ad-hoc networks. This paper explores the feasibility of using Bluetooth devices for structural health monitoring telemetry applications. We describe the configuration of a small ad-hoc network using Bluetooth modules and micro-controllers to simulate a telemetry application and thus evaluate the general framework of distributed, reliable, and secure, wireless communications required for telemetry.

Full textMobile data consumption has drastically increased in the recent years which stress theexisting communication networks. As an effect of the increased load a demand for newcommunication solutions has arisen, creating a need for data offloading onto fixed networks such as Wi-Fi. In this thesis, we aim to study how to maintain and reconstruct a large and dynamic Bluetooth mesh network in an environment such as Stortorget during Malmöfestivalen. We implement a network topology specific for Bluetooth, the scatternet topology, in the network simulator NS-3 and run simulations in which we provoke changes in the network topology. The result of our simulations shows that the network is able to heal itself when the topology changes, that the scatternet topology can manage up to 240 dynamic mobile nodes and that at most 3 nodes are affected when the topology changes during simulations of up to 240 nodes.

Full textFuture particle physics experiments will face an increasing particle flux with rising beam luminosity. Detectors close to the interaction point will need to provide robustness against the high particle flux. Moreover, a time resolution of tens of picosecond for Minimum Ionising Particles will be necessary to ensure a clear vertex separation of the reconstructed secondary particles and to reduce pile-up. This manuscript focusses on the PICOSEC-Micromegas, an innovative particle detector based on the Micromegas readout coupled to a Cherenkov radiator and a photocathode in front of the gaseous volume. In this way, each primary electron is located on the surface of the photocathode, suppressing thus the inevitable time jitter of several nanoseconds, due to the different ionisation positions created by the passage of a particle from the drift region of a gaseous detector. The drift region length is reduced to the same order of magnitude as the amplification region (100-200 μm) to minimise direct gas ionisation, and it is additionally used as a pre-amplification stage. A mathematical model, based on GARFIELD++ simulations, is developed to describe the propagation of the pre-amplification avalanche showing that the length and multiplication of the avalanche in the drift region is the dominant factor in the timing performance. The PICOSEC-Micromegas concept is studied with several prototypes optimising the electric fields, the drift distance, and the gas mixture in the LIDYL (Laboratoire Interactions, Dynamiques et Lasers) UV laser facility. A single photoelectron time resolution of ~44 ps is measured with the shortest tested drift region length of 119,μm and the highest stable field setting. Measurements performed in the secondary particle beam at CERN have resulted in a time resolution of 24 ps for 150 GeV muons with a drift region length of 200 μm and a CsI photocathode providing 10 photoelectrons per MIP. In order to evolve from the detection concept to a versatile instrument, several prototypes are developed, focusing on specific properties needed for future applications: anode segmentation, spark quenching, photocathode efficiency and robustness for higher particle flux. An hexagonal segmented multipad prototype is tested in the beam with a time resolution of ~36 ps in the central pad. The operation in high rate environments is studied with different resistive strip and floating strip anodes resistive detectors in muon and pion beams. Time resolutions significantly under 100 ps and stable operation in the pion beam are achieved with all resistive prototypes. Robust photocathode materials, as an alternative to CsI, are investigated to reduce degradation from the ion-backflow generated in the pre-amplification avalanche. The most promising materials are diamond-like carbon (DLC) and boron carbide (B4C). Considering all the results achieved, two application cases are projected with the PICOSEC-Micromegas detector. The first one is the use in a calorimeter as a timing layer. Many secondary particles are produced in an electromagnetic calorimeter after few radiation lengths and a time resolution down to ~5 ps is expected with the PICOSEC-Micromegas. The second one is particle identification trough time-of-flight (TOF) measurements. The PICOSEC-Micromegas is expected to double the momentum range of current TOF detectors for π/Κ separation with 3σ

Com a possibilidade de intervir no genoma humano com o objectivo de evitar doenças, a comunidade científica entende que a espécie humana poderá em breve ter controlo sobre a sua evolução biológica. “Playing God” é uma expressão frequentemente usada para classificar esta auto-transformação das espécies, a qual parece cada vez mais vir a tornar-se realidade. A literatura, vivendo lado a lado com estes avanços científicos, tem a possibilidade de “brincar” com temas que vão desde o espaço, ideologia, raça, etnia, futuros utópicos ou criaturas de laboratório criadas para desafiar, ou talvez ser reflexo da nossa própria humanidade, antevendo mudanças que as novas tecnologias possam trazer. E, uma vez que vivemos num tempo em que os avanços tecnológicos levaram as nossas capacidades para lugares antigamente só imaginados na ficção científica, a literatura tem também a oportunidade de explorar questões levantadas pela clonagem humana, inteligência artificial e engenharia genética, ou outras questões bioéticas. Jodi Picoult, escritora Americana, tem dedicado a sua escrita a assuntos do dia a dia e a temas actuais e controversos, como por exemplo a engenharia genética e a perspectiva de “saviour siblings” com todas as implicações éticas, tema do livro My Sister’s Keeper, que me proponho analisar neste trabalho.
Recent developments in biotechnology and genetic research are raising complex ethical questions concerning the legitimate scope and limits of genetic intervention. With the possibility of intervening in the human genome to prevent diseases, the scientific community feels that the human species might soon be able to take its biological evolution in its own hands. “Playing God” is an expression commonly used to refer to this self-transformation of the species which, from the evidence, might soon be a reality. Living side-by-side with these advances, literature has the chance “to play” with themes such as outer space, ideology, race and ethnicity, utopian futures, or laboratory beings created to defy, or perhaps reflect our own humanity, dealing with changes that new technologies might bring about. And as we are living at a time when technological advances have moved our capabilities to places previously only imagined in science fiction, literature also has the opportunity to explore questions raised by human cloning, artificial intelligence and genetic engineering or other bioethical issues. Jodi Picoult, an American novelist has been devoting her writings to several present-day events and controversial issues such as genetic engineering and the prospect of “savior siblings” with all its ethical implications, dealt with in My Sister’s Keeper, the novel I will be presenting in this work.

Full textWhen Gaetan Picon wrote in 1970 « Every piece of art is simultaneously a picture, a depiction, and the presence of an existence » in Admirable tremblement du temps, he offered a convincing definition of the nature of a work of art. Critic of art and literature, philosopher, teacher, Director-General of Arts and Letters, and above all an independent thinker, he devoted his life to Art and Literature. Through his articles, essays and novels, his personal experience of writing and artwork, and his writings on art that were infused with his own particular sensibility, he created a new experience out of the beloved artwork, seeking to understand and explain it through personal identification. He considered that each artwork asks the observer to question its form and meaning, and the effect achieved. A work of art requires to be written about, and is a challenge to life, existence and culture in the way it is received and interpreted, in what we make of it. And in return the observer also seeks life, existence and culture. In what way is art related to conscience, to the language that we use, and to the world as we perceive it ? In what way are conscience, history and existence products of art ? In short, how can it exist for us and yet outside of us at the same time ? The questions that Gaetan Picon studied impose necessarily an exploration using multiples perspectives. We must examine at the same time language, performance, the world and creation from attentive reading of his writings. In all of them Gaetan Picon carefully brought new ideas to the experience of art. This present doctoral thesis will offer an interpretation and an acknowledgment of this experience

Full textThe life and works of Jacinto Octavio Picón (1852-1923) remain very unrecognized nowadays. It is true that Picón is forgotten by the critics and most of researchers. His books, which are unfairly put in the background since the author's death, yet deserve much better, although Picón was well-known and respected by his peers in his lifetime. However, since about thirty years, thanks to the studies of Gonzalo Sobejano, followed by the ones of Noël Valis and Esteban Gutiérrez Díaz-Bernardo, among others, it has been rediscovered. His journalistic works are also worth being studied and brought out. Our thesis takes an interest in a large corpus of news articles written by Picón. These texts show us an impartial and conscientious critic, and highlight an erudite writer and intellectual free from prejudice, as his various tastes testify it. Picón estimates and knows deeply history and philosophy as well as fine arts, poetry and theatre. He does not spurn to take part in discussions about current events. He also tackles society topics, and becomes the careful witness of his time, paying attention to political upheavals, from the reign of Isabel II to the Restoration, including the Revolution of 1868 and the fleeting First Republic. Two other subjects : the question of women in the Spanish society of that time, and the sometimes heavy omnipotence of the church, both topics being linked, the unfavourable status of women depending in the main on the conservative influence of the church. In the end, Picon's journalistic writings reveal a coherence of mind, which makes the author of Dulce y sabrosa an original artist, with progressive ideas and eclectic judgements

Full textExperience as an English major, a bookseller, a publishing intern, and a reader has formed questions in my mind about why people read what they do. My interest is focused in two particular "categories" of literature that vie for readers' attention: book clubs and literary awards. Because my skills are in literary interpretation and not societal or industrial analysis, I explored this supposed dichotomy by reading and comparing books from each category. In the "book club" books (My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult and The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards), I found a remarkable familial structure at the core: a daughter with a medical condition; a mother struggling to cope emotionally; a father who distances himself through work and offers profound symbolism via a hobby; an older brother who rebels; an outside couple, professionally involved in the action and romantically involved in each other. The Pulitzer Prize for Fiction-winning books, Gilead by Marilynne Robinson and Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri, stretch farther with voice, style, and imagery. I found them intellectually and personally more satisfying. In addition pursuing academic interests, I also grew to better understand the variety of purposes for which we read. Though I concluded that if all four novels were to be labeled, they should simply be named "middlebrow," I came to appreciate different writers' strengths — research, personal experience, mastery of language — even when they do not match my personal criteria as a reader

Whatever the justifications intentions and actions, the objectives of this intervention depends largely on the terms of its spatial and more precisely its regionalization in reference to existing social body that should be exploited.This phase of project, through the prism of a formalism induced by the extent of operational objectives, coordination of multi-stakeholder or financial tracking shares, leaving little room for inhabitants representations.In our study, we have demonstrated the need to mobilize the concept of receptivity resident in its application development and particularly in the social housing projects. We endeavored to consider a methodology for operationalizing a categorical variable, the resident receptivity in the conduct of social housing project.To get there, we relied in particular on the analysis of responsiveness through the case of urban renewal of St. Bartholomew III district Picon-Busserine. Through content analysis, we were able to remove the need for a turning resident receptivity as a token of good reception of urban projects.This study, in its finality, is a methodological contribution in the field of project in social housing areas. Full textThe golden-lined rabbitfish Siganus lineatus has many assets for its aquaculture, motivating the company Aqualagon to undertake domestication in New Caledonia. Today, Aqualagon seeks to perpetuate its production by eliminating the larval rearing variabilities through a better broodstock management, while facing a lack knowledge on this fish. Bluetooth Piconet has become an important area of research and development in the short-range wireless network system. It is well known that bluetooth causes disturbing interference since sharing frequency band is used in communication channels. This thesis proposes a new and efficient method to solve the retransmission problem that occurs in wireless interference. The proposed method is developed based on average transmit times and margin of grouping to find out the grouping rule of the Bluetooth Piconet. A computer simulation shows in this thesis that the performance of the proposed group assignment approach is much bettter than can be obtained by other conventional means. Furthermore, in order to reduce retransmit time and save time-slot, a new packet combine retransmit method is developed based on different reliability of packet's transmit conditions in this thesis. As a consequence, for total duty cycle and time slots, the proposed packet combine retransmit method obtains a better performance than the conventional retransmit method.

The direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) ultra-band wireless networks employ IEEE 802.15.3 media access control (MAC) protocol. We explore carefully the IEEE 802.15.3 standard in detail in our study for multi-piconet applications. In order to variegate the application on high-rate UWB WPANs and expand the network coverage, we regulate the inter-piconet connection scheme, so that we could transmit data between different piconets by multi-hop relay. Then, we propose a centralized scheme to schedule and control the switching policy of bridge devices in this environment to solve data-loss and delay problems caused by multi-hop transmissions. Furthermore, a simulation platform for 802.15.3 network is built to examine performance of our proposal schemes. Some suggestions are proposed according to the simulation results.

In the recent years, connecting every devices by wireless networks is a popular application as 802.11 related techniques matured. IEEE(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) not only defines 802.11, but also 802.15.3a which is a WPAN(wireless personal area network) standard based on UWB (ultra wideband) techniques. There are two groups desiring to define the physical layer of 802.15.3a. One uses DS-CDMA(Direct-Sequence Code-Division Multiple Access); the other, the union of MBOA, claims the MB-OFDM(Multi-Band Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing). The protocols of media access control of the two physical layers are very different. This paper is focused on DS-CDMA techniques and related MAC standard, 802.15.3 . Our proposed algorithms try to efficiently transmit data among multi-piconet. A distributed strategy is employed to schedule BDEV(bridge device) to reduce delay. The proposed scheduling scheme could effectively reduce the end-to-end delay. However, due to the limitations of 802.15.3, the end-to-end delay may be too large to meet the QoS requirement of multimedia. Additionally, 802.15.3 MAC is not originally proposed for UWB technology. It may not take the advantages of UWB without modifying the relative MAC parameters. We proposed a set of MAC parameters, proven by simulation, which can efficiently raise the channel utilization and lower the transmitting delay during CAP(contention access period). Finally, as we know, there are no researches about 802.15.3 multi-piconet. The related works about 802.15.3 MAC are all focusing on single piconet. We try to explore the possible issues in this area, and realize a simulation platform for future researchers who are interested in multi-piconet UWB networks.

HR-WPAN can be the communication interface of the home entertainment systems. The 802.15.3 is a new HR-WPAN standard. It doesn’t define how to construct a scatter-net. The proposed formation protocol can construct a multi-hop environment. By the proposed formation protocol, all devices that equipped with 802.15.3 can be placed more arbitrarily. The feature piconet of the proposed formation protocol can avoid “Hidden Terminal Problem” in CAP and make the network robust. “Dynamic Bridge Adjustment” can reduce the hops between the devices. “Bridge Broadcast Scheme” makes inter-piconet communication possible and the routing protocols can work. Without collecting information on neighbors, the performance in the aspect of the formatted topologies of the proposed formation protocol is not second to the one thatneed collect neighbor information. The simulation results validate the results.

In the recent years, the development of the wireless communication is ripe and rapid. In numerous wireless technologies, Bluetooth is low cost, low power consumption, low interference and short-range wireless communication technology and be used to replace the cable connection. In the Bluetooth specification, the piconet is a basic unit in Bluetooth network. A piconet is composed of one node which is called master and the other nodes (up to seven) called slave. Because Bluetooth operates in a strictly master-slave paradigm, the transmission of slave node is passive. All transmissions should pass through the master node, the master node need to decide when to transmit and how long the transmission continued. We call this intra-piconet scheduling. In this paper we proposed a scheduling algorithm which considers both real-time and non real-time traffic. We use Asynchronous Connectionless Link (ACL) to carry real-time data and support schedule on non real-time traffic to prevent the overall performance from degrading significantly. Besides, we decrease the computation overhead of our scheduling algorithm by detecting the traffic situation in the piconet. If the variation of the traffic situation is large, the schedule needs to change.

Ultra wideband (UWB) communication is a potential new technique for replacing high-speed data cables in homes and offices. UWB technology will be capable of transmitting hundreds of megabits per second over distances of several meters. Multi-band (MB) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system is one of the most innovative UWB techniques. MB OFDM system utilizes only 500 MHz instantaneous bandwidth and dividing that frequency band into smaller simultaneously transmitted subcarriers. In this thesis, a MB OFDM receiver is proposed, which mitigates the intercarrier interference (ICI) induced by a long delay spread channel and avoids the interference from other piconet, respectively. Performance of a MB OFDM system is typically significantly degraded due to long delay spread channels. Although the minimum mean-square error (MMSE) equalizer can solve this problem, the matrix inverse computation is too complex for the MB OFDM system. To alleviate this problem, the decision-aided ICI canceller is designed to improve the influence of ICI. On the other hand, the four unique time-frequency interleaving codes are adopted to reduce the effect of cochannel interference (CCI) from simultaneously operating piconets (SOP). Furthermore, we proposed an interference avoidance transmission scheme which turns off the collided frequency slots and conveys signal in the interference-free frequency slots. Finally, we evaluate the performance of the proposed system and confirm that it works well in a UWB environment.

In recent years, much attention has been given to the wireless communication and the mobility is the most important trend in the future. Thus, many wireless technologies have been proposed and standardized. Among these novel technologies, Bluetooth attracts much attention in short range wireless technology through low cost, low battery power consumption, and low interference. Bluetooth scatternets are formed by piconets, the basic network unit of Bluetooth, sharing common device(s). These inter-piconet devices, i.e. the bridges are responsible for the forwarding of inter-piconet traffic but they can not participate in two or more piconets simultaneously. Thus, this require inter-piconet scheduling algorithm to do time division multiplex for their presence in each piconet. In this paper, we proposed a new inter-piconet scheduling algorithm based on HOLD mode, a power saving mode of Bluetooth to reduce the average delay of inter-piconet packets and increase the utilization of bridge. The main reason of delay in inter-piconet traffic is that bridge wastes time to be idle in a empty piconet and the inter-piconet packets must wait this time period in other piconets. Thus, our proposed scheme decides the time duration which the bridge should spend in different piconet according to the traffic pattern that decrease the probability of bridge is idle. In proposed inter-piconet scheduling algorithm, there is no need to modify the specification of Bluetooth and add any other device so that it is easy to implement and join to specification of Bluetooth. Finally, the result of simulation presents the low average delay, high throughput, and the scalability in our proposed inter-piconet scheduling algorithm.

Bluetooth is a wireless communication technology that can be used for cable replacement. In this thesis, we propose a QoS-aware scheduling for scatternet routes with mobile devices. Firstly, we study several Intra-Piconet and Inter-Piconet scheduling algorithms. These scheduling algorithms do not fully support QoS on scatternet route. The RR approach is a fair scheduling but does not support QoS. The ERMRR approach can strongly support QoS on scatternet route but suffer from the starvation problem. Thus, we combine the scheduling approaches of Round Robin (RR) and the Exhaustive Route-Member Round Robin (ERMRR) into the - Route-Member Round Robin( -RMRR), which can support QoS on RM slaves and provides good fairness for the slaves. Moreover, we conduct simulation study to evaluate and compare the performance of the three different scheduling approaches. Finally, we also verify the proposed -RMRR approach. Our simulation results shows that the -RMRR is effective for supporting QoS on scatternet routes with mobile devices and provide good fairness.
