Abstract:
The Bluetooth technology is still in an early stage of development. Much more research can and will be done before the performance of Bluetooth reaches its peak. During the recent years, ideas to integrate Bluetooth units in larger networks have arose, with the Bluetooth unit in the role as access point to the network. This behavior opens up for new possibilities but also increases the requirements on performance. In this thesis the main topic is improvement of piconet performance. The piconet, with the Master unit as access point, is studied from a teletraffic engineering point of view. Different performance attributes and behaviors have been found and investigated. With the outcome of these investigations in mind, new and more efficient policies and algorithms are proposed for both data and voice. A policy increasing the utilization of available bandwidth in a piconet is presented. Furthermore, a proposal is presented where multiple Bluetooth units are used in an efficient manner to support voice calls. The proposed solution does also enable creation of simple teletraffic models to be used for dimensioning.

Abstract:
The Bluetooth wireless transmission standard provides a low-power data link between electronic devices over relatively short ranges. These links, also known as piconets, transmit using frequency hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) to send information over the air. As more applications for Bluetooth technology become available, the number of Bluetooth devices will continue to increase. With this increase in use, there will be a decrease in performance that can be attributed to Bluetooth "inter-piconet" interference. To date, very little has been published on the subject of inter-piconet interference. Previous studies have derived mean packet error rates for an increase in the number of piconets present. To come up with the mean rate, many papers make the assumption that the probability of a Bluetooth device hopping to a channel is random. However, making this assumption does not explain what happens in real time. This research gives some insight into what really happens when multiple piconets are interfering in real time. Bluetooth devices actually use a frequency hopping algorithm to determine the hopping sequence. This algorithm has been implemented in software to test various aspects of inter-piconet interference. Previous studies have shown that synchronizing the clocks among neighboring piconets will result in an increase in performance. This study shows that there are cases where synchronization alone will not provide sufficient improvement. Experimental testing has been conducted to validate some of the simulated results. Adjacent channel interference was observed during experimentation. This contradicts previous research, which has assumed that adjacent channel interference is insignificant.

The Bluetooth standard is intended to provide short-range (10-100 meter) wireless connectivity between mobile and desktop devices. It was developed as a replacement for short cables, and has the ability to form ad-hoc networks. This paper explores the feasibility of using Bluetooth devices for structural health monitoring telemetry applications. We describe the configuration of a small ad-hoc network using Bluetooth modules and micro-controllers to simulate a telemetry application and thus evaluate the general framework of distributed, reliable, and secure, wireless communications required for telemetry.

Abstract:
Wireless sensor networks for sports monitoring applications support data collection from multiple sensor platforms. Important network requirements are data throughput, range, low power operation and number of sensor nodes. The Bluetooth specification has been designed for low power, medium data rate, cable replacement solutions and as such is useful for wireless sensor networks. However it has a limitation of a maximum number of eight active devices per Bluetooth network (Piconet). This project investigates and extends the capability of the Bluetooth specification and increases the usefulness for sensor applications. This has been achieved by utilising a combination of a network of Bluetooth wireless access points and innovative Bluetooth network structures. The Bluetooth network structures were created and controlled via the fixed Bluetooth access points, which act as root nodes for the network structures. The developed network structures for wireless sensing applications were Piconet Sharing, Scatternet Tree, Piconet Tree and Multiple Piconet. These network structures all allow more than seven Bluetooth devices to communicate to a fixed Bluetooth access point. A MATLAB based simulation tool was developed to compare the theoretical throughput per node for each network structure and validated experimentally. Bluetooth hardware was used to test the performance of the proposed network structures with current Bluetooth hardware and software implementations. Several limitations were discovered with the test Bluetooth hardware used and this impacted on the performance of the Bluetooth network structures. All network structures were shown (via data extrapolation) to provide the throughput per node required for the specific wireless sensing application. The developed network of Bluetooth root nodes combined with the developed network structures provided a complete solution suitable for wireless sensor applications. The same principles developed for Bluetooth based wireless sensor networks can be applied to other wireless applications that require a greater number of nodes than standard Bluetooth Piconets can provide. The developed network structures expand the applications that the Bluetooth Specification is suitable for.

Abstract:
A Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN) is an ad hoc network that consists of devices that surround an individual or an object. Bluetooth® technology is especially suitable for formation of WPANs due to the pervasiveness of devices with Bluetooth® chipsets, its operation in the unlicensed Industrial, Scientific, Medical (ISM) frequency band, and its interference resilience. Bluetooth® technology has great potential to become the de facto standard for communication between heterogeneous devices in WPANs. The piconet, which is the basic Bluetooth® networking unit, utilizes a Master/Slave (MS) configuration that permits only a single master and up to seven active slave devices. This structure limitation prevents Bluetooth® devices from directly participating in larger Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) and Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs). In order to build larger Bluetooth® topologies, called scatternets, individual piconets must be interconnected. Since each piconet has a unique frequency hopping sequence, piconet interconnections are done by allowing some nodes, called bridges, to participate in more than one piconet. These bridge nodes divide their time between piconets by switching between Frequency Hopping (FH) channels and synchronizing to the piconet's master. In this dissertation we address scatternet formation, routing, and security to make Bluetooth® scatternet communication feasible. We define criteria for efficient scatternet topologies, describe characteristics of different scatternet topology models as well as compare and contrast their properties, classify existing scatternet formation approaches based on the aforementioned models, and propose a distributed scatternet formation algorithm that efficiently forms a scatternet topology and is resilient to node failures. We propose a hybrid routing algorithm, using a bridge link agnostic approach, that provides on-demand discovery of destination devices by their address or by the services that devices provide to their peers, by extending the Service Discovery Protocol (SDP) to scatternets. We also propose a link level security scheme that provides secure communication between adjacent piconet masters, within what we call an Extended Scatternet Neighborhood (ESN).

Mobil datakonsumtion har drastiskt ökat de senaste åren vilket belastar de existerande kommunikationsnätverken. I och med den ökade belastningen av existerande infrastrukturer krävs det nya kommunikationslösningar. Detta har i sin tur skapat ett behov för dataavlastning på fasta nätverk, exempelvis Wi-Fi-nätverk. I denna studie undersöker vi genom simuleringar hur vi kan underhålla ett storskaligt och dynamiskt Bluetooth meshnätverk i en miljö likt Stortorget under Malmöfestivalen. Vi implementerar en nätverkstopologi för Bluetooth, scatternettopologin, i nätverkssimulatorn NS-3 och utför simuleringar där vi provocerar förändringar i topologin. Resultaten av våra simuleringar visar på att nätverket lyckas återhämta sig vid förändring i topologin, att scatternettopologin minst klarar av 240 dynamiska mobila noder samt att max 3 noder påverkas vid förändringar i topologin för simuleringar av upp till 240 noder.
Mobile data consumption has drastically increased in the recent years which stress theexisting communication networks. As an effect of the increased load a demand for newcommunication solutions has arisen, creating a need for data offloading onto fixed networks such as Wi-Fi. In this thesis, we aim to study how to maintain and reconstruct a large and dynamic Bluetooth mesh network in an environment such as Stortorget during Malmöfestivalen. We implement a network topology specific for Bluetooth, the scatternet topology, in the network simulator NS-3 and run simulations in which we provoke changes in the network topology. The result of our simulations shows that the network is able to heal itself when the topology changes, that the scatternet topology can manage up to 240 dynamic mobile nodes and that at most 3 nodes are affected when the topology changes during simulations of up to 240 nodes.

Wireless applications have become a common part of daily life. Whether it is mobile phones, the Wi-Fi router at home, the keycard which has replaced the car key, a radio frequency identification access system to a building or a Bluetooth headset for your computer or phone, the means of modern wireless data exchange is an omnipresent technology. In sports, the market is in its infancy for wireless, technical applications or gadgets. Only heart rate monitors and GPS watches are currently used by recreational athletes. Even though most of the larger sports equipment companies regularly launch new products related to sports performance monitoring and mobile phone technology, product innovation leaps are rare.In this work the design of a wireless sports performance measurement platform is presented. Using the example of kayaking, this platform is configured as a paddle performance measuring system, the Kayak XL System, which can monitor propulsive paddle force, paddle kinematics and boat velocity, interalia. A common mobile phone platform has been chosen as the user interface for this system. The design approach focussing on user requests, demands and expectations in combination with the process of iterative technical development are unveiled in this thesis. An evaluation of the system is presented and the work is finalised with an overview of further systems which have been designed based on the developed measurement platform. The Kayak XL System is a flexible system designed to be mounted onto any standard kayak paddle and installed in any competition kayak. Versatility, unobtrusiveness and usability were major design concerns. The developed system consists of four modules plus a software which has been designed for Android mobile phones. The phone communicates with each of the four modules trough Bluetooth radio. These four modules are also referred to as nodes and have specific measurement purposes. Two nodes have been designed to measure paddle force and kinematics, one node has the purpose to measure foot stretcher force and boat motion data, and the fourth node enables a more convenient method of calibrating paddle force measurement. The fourth node is therefore only needed prior to performance data acquisition. Results show that paddle and foot stretcher force can be measured with a resolution below 1N after calibration. Installing the paddle nodes on a previously configured paddle without repeated calibration is facilitated with the compromise of a doubled error margin. The default sampling frequency is set to 100 Hz and can, like all system parameters, be configured on the mobile phone. Real-time computation of complex performance parameters is only limited by the phone CPU. The system adds twice 109 g to the paddle and approximately 850 g to the kayak, excluding the mass of the mobile phone

Bluetoothâ ¢ is an emerging short-range RF wireless voice and data communication technology expected to spread widely in a couple of years. The open specification technology eliminates the need for cables to connect mobile phones, portable computers and countless other devices to each other from all different manufacturers. This thesis provides an overview of the emerging Bluetoothâ ¢ technology and investigates the performance of Bluetoothâ ¢ data networks in various network topologies simulated from actual usage scenarios. Using a typical office environment, the study examines the probability and effects of Co-Channel interference as Bluetoothâ ¢ ad-hoc networks are formed in adjacent offices. A computer aided simulation tool, MATLAB simulates a low to highly dense interfering Bluetoothâ ¢ environment which provides the parameters to evaluate the bluetooth co-channel interference and performance. Several metrics are identified to predict Bluetoothâ ¢ performance in a piconet after a collision has occurred: data through put, the probability of frequency collision, transmitter - receiver distance, and power received. Next, to predict Bluetooth performance we also need to define what constitutes a lost packet. Finally, a Bluetoothâ ¢network simulation is developed to measure the metrics, given occurrence of the lost packets.

Con l'evoluzione dell'IoT e l'affermarsi di una concezione moderna di pratica medica, vengono introdotte nuove soluzioni nei percorsi di cura dei pazienti. Nell'AUSL di Piacenza, gli operatori sanitari del percorso terapeutico "Disturbi del comportamento alimentare" intendono sperimentare una nuova metodologia di cura dei propri pazienti, incentrata sulla continuità della cura stessa e sulla telecomunicazione. L'obiettivo è quello di monitorare i parametri vitali dei pazienti da remoto, utilizzando un'applicazione dedicata e alcuni dispositivi medici dotati di connettività wireless, che vengono forniti ai pazienti stessi per la raccolta dei parametri da analizzare. La tecnologia wireless adatta per questo tipo di utilizzo, considerando il requisito di basso consumo energetico dei dispositivi medici, è il Bluetooth Low Energy. In questo elaborato, vengono inizialmente descritti i componenti fondamentali di questa tecnologia: GAP e GATT. Successivamente, vengono descritte e approfondite le funzionalità principali di una componente autonoma realizzata per dispositivi Android, parte integrante di un'applicazione di monitoraggio in sviluppo. Le tre funzionalità in questione sono: pairing dei dispositivi, sincronizzazione e visualizzazione dei dati. Vengono descritti i processi di analisi, progettazione e implementazione della componente stessa, oltre al risultato finale che si intende realizzare e che costituirà un sistema di monitoraggio completo.

Les futures expériences de physique des particules devront être opérationnelles pour un flux de particules et une luminosité croissants. Plus particulièrement, les détecteurs proches du point d'interaction devront présenter une très bonne robustesse pour faire face à un flux de particules très élevé. De plus, une résolution temporelle de quelques dizaines de picosecondes pour les particules au minimum d’ionisation sera nécessaire pour assurer une séparation nette des vertex reconstruits et réduire l'empilement d’événements. Ce manuscrit a pour sujet l’instrument PICOSEC-Micromegas, un détecteur de particules innovant basé sur la lecture d’un détecteur Micromegas couplé à un radiateur Cherenkov et une photocathode. Dans ce dispositif, chaque électron primaire étant produit à la surface de la photocathode, l’étalement en temps du signal est minimal, alors qu’il peut atteindre plusieurs nanosecondes lorsque les ionisations primaires ont lieu sur le passage d'une particule dans l’espace de dérive. La hauteur de ce dernier est ici du même ordre de grandeur que celle de la région d'amplification (100-200 μm) afin de minimiser l'ionisation directe du gaz. L’espace de dérive est également utilisée comme espace de pré-amplification. Un modèle mathématique, basé sur des simulations GARFIELD++, a été développé pour décrire le développement de l'avalanche de pré-amplification. Il a permis de montrer que la longueur et la multiplication de l'avalanche dans l’espace de dérive sont les facteurs dominants dans la résolution temporelle. Le concept PICOSEC-Micromegas a été étudié avec plusieurs prototypes optimisant les champs électriques, la distance de dérive et le mélange gazeux auprès de l’installation laser du LIDYL (Laboratoire Interactions, Dynamiques et Lasers). Une résolution temporelle de ~44 ps a été obtenue pour un photo‑électron unique. Par ailleurs, des mesures effectuées en faisceau test au CERN ont permis d'obtenir une résolution temporelle de 24 ps pour des muons de 150 GeV, avec un espace de dérive de 200 μm et une photocathode en CsI (10 photoélectrons par MIP). Afin de passer du concept de détection à un démonstrateur plusieurs prototypes ont été développés, en se concentrant sur les propriétés spécifiques nécessaires aux applications futures: segmentation de l'anode, annulation des étincelles, efficacité de la photocathode et robustesse à haut flux de particules. Un prototype à pads hexagonaux a été testé en faisceau et montré une résolution temporelle de ~36 ps dans le pad central. Les performances à haut flux sont testées avec des détecteurs résistifs dans des faisceaux de muons et de pions. Des résolutions temporelles nettement inférieures à 100 ps et un fonctionnement stable en faisceau de pions sont obtenus avec tous les prototypes résistifs. Des matériaux de photocathode robustes, comme alternative au CsI, sont étudiés pour réduire la dégradation due au retour des ions. Les matériaux les plus prometteurs sont le “diamond-like carbon” (DLC) et le carbure de bore (B4C). Compte tenu des résultats obtenus, deux cas d'application sont considérés pour les perspectives de ce programme de R&D. La première application considérée est l'utilisation du détecteur PICOSEC à l'intérieur d'un calorimètre comme couche de synchronisation ou de nombreuses particules secondaires sont produites dans un calorimètre électromagnétique après quelques longueurs de radiation. Une résolution temporelle de ~5 ps est attendue avec le PICOSEC-Micromegas. La seconde application est l'identification des particules par des mesures de temps de vol (TOF) ou PICOSEC-Micromegas devrait permettre de doubler la plage d’impulsion des détecteurs TOF actuels pour la séparation π/Κ avec 3σ
Future particle physics experiments will face an increasing particle flux with rising beam luminosity. Detectors close to the interaction point will need to provide robustness against the high particle flux. Moreover, a time resolution of tens of picosecond for Minimum Ionising Particles will be necessary to ensure a clear vertex separation of the reconstructed secondary particles and to reduce pile-up. This manuscript focusses on the PICOSEC-Micromegas, an innovative particle detector based on the Micromegas readout coupled to a Cherenkov radiator and a photocathode in front of the gaseous volume. In this way, each primary electron is located on the surface of the photocathode, suppressing thus the inevitable time jitter of several nanoseconds, due to the different ionisation positions created by the passage of a particle from the drift region of a gaseous detector. The drift region length is reduced to the same order of magnitude as the amplification region (100-200 μm) to minimise direct gas ionisation, and it is additionally used as a pre-amplification stage. A mathematical model, based on GARFIELD++ simulations, is developed to describe the propagation of the pre-amplification avalanche showing that the length and multiplication of the avalanche in the drift region is the dominant factor in the timing performance. The PICOSEC-Micromegas concept is studied with several prototypes optimising the electric fields, the drift distance, and the gas mixture in the LIDYL (Laboratoire Interactions, Dynamiques et Lasers) UV laser facility. A single photoelectron time resolution of ~44 ps is measured with the shortest tested drift region length of 119,μm and the highest stable field setting. Measurements performed in the secondary particle beam at CERN have resulted in a time resolution of 24 ps for 150 GeV muons with a drift region length of 200 μm and a CsI photocathode providing 10 photoelectrons per MIP. In order to evolve from the detection concept to a versatile instrument, several prototypes are developed, focusing on specific properties needed for future applications: anode segmentation, spark quenching, photocathode efficiency and robustness for higher particle flux. An hexagonal segmented multipad prototype is tested in the beam with a time resolution of ~36 ps in the central pad. The operation in high rate environments is studied with different resistive strip and floating strip anodes resistive detectors in muon and pion beams. Time resolutions significantly under 100 ps and stable operation in the pion beam are achieved with all resistive prototypes. Robust photocathode materials, as an alternative to CsI, are investigated to reduce degradation from the ion-backflow generated in the pre-amplification avalanche. The most promising materials are diamond-like carbon (DLC) and boron carbide (B4C). Considering all the results achieved, two application cases are projected with the PICOSEC-Micromegas detector. The first one is the use in a calorimeter as a timing layer. Many secondary particles are produced in an electromagnetic calorimeter after few radiation lengths and a time resolution down to ~5 ps is expected with the PICOSEC-Micromegas. The second one is particle identification trough time-of-flight (TOF) measurements. The PICOSEC-Micromegas is expected to double the momentum range of current TOF detectors for π/Κ separation with 3σ

Com a possibilidade de intervir no genoma humano com o objectivo de evitar doenças, a comunidade científica entende que a espécie humana poderá em breve ter controlo sobre a sua evolução biológica. “Playing God” é uma expressão frequentemente usada para classificar esta auto-transformação das espécies, a qual parece cada vez mais vir a tornar-se realidade. A literatura, vivendo lado a lado com estes avanços científicos, tem a possibilidade de “brincar” com temas que vão desde o espaço, ideologia, raça, etnia, futuros utópicos ou criaturas de laboratório criadas para desafiar, ou talvez ser reflexo da nossa própria humanidade, antevendo mudanças que as novas tecnologias possam trazer. E, uma vez que vivemos num tempo em que os avanços tecnológicos levaram as nossas capacidades para lugares antigamente só imaginados na ficção científica, a literatura tem também a oportunidade de explorar questões levantadas pela clonagem humana, inteligência artificial e engenharia genética, ou outras questões bioéticas. Jodi Picoult, escritora Americana, tem dedicado a sua escrita a assuntos do dia a dia e a temas actuais e controversos, como por exemplo a engenharia genética e a perspectiva de “saviour siblings” com todas as implicações éticas, tema do livro My Sister’s Keeper, que me proponho analisar neste trabalho.
Recent developments in biotechnology and genetic research are raising complex ethical questions concerning the legitimate scope and limits of genetic intervention. With the possibility of intervening in the human genome to prevent diseases, the scientific community feels that the human species might soon be able to take its biological evolution in its own hands. “Playing God” is an expression commonly used to refer to this self-transformation of the species which, from the evidence, might soon be a reality. Living side-by-side with these advances, literature has the chance “to play” with themes such as outer space, ideology, race and ethnicity, utopian futures, or laboratory beings created to defy, or perhaps reflect our own humanity, dealing with changes that new technologies might bring about. And as we are living at a time when technological advances have moved our capabilities to places previously only imagined in science fiction, literature also has the opportunity to explore questions raised by human cloning, artificial intelligence and genetic engineering or other bioethical issues. Jodi Picoult, an American novelist has been devoting her writings to several present-day events and controversial issues such as genetic engineering and the prospect of “savior siblings” with all its ethical implications, dealt with in My Sister’s Keeper, the novel I will be presenting in this work.

O bairro do Barrocal do Douro, mais conhecido por Picote, foi concebido de apoio à construção da barragem, no âmbito dos aproveitamentos hidroeléctricos do rio, pela empresa Hidro-Eléctrica do Douro (H.E.D.). Entre 1953-1964, desenvolveram-se projectos para três barragens, onde se incluíam habitações e infra-estruturas, projectados pelos arquitectos João Archer de Carvalho (1928-), Manuel Nunes de Almeida (1924-2014) e Rogério Ramos (1927-1976), alunos da Escola do Porto. O bairro de Picote, contemplava edifícios definitivos com influências da arquitectura moderna internacional, num plano urbano também modernista, com o objectivo de alojar as 400 pessoas que ficariam responsáveis pela manutenção da central hidroeléctrica. Este plano, previsto para cerca de 4000 habitantes na fase de estaleiro, contemplava igualmente construções de carácter temporário necessárias para o alojamento de todos aqueles que contribuíram para a obra. The Three Sisters was produced by the University of New Orleans Department of Film, Theatre and Communication Arts in New Orleans, Louisiana. The play was performed in the Thrust Theatre of the Performing Arts Center at 8:00 pm on the evenings of April 19 through 21 and April 26 through 28, with one matinee at 2:30 pm on Sunday, April 29, 2007.

Quand Gaëtan Picon écrit en 1970 « toute œuvre est à la fois image, représentation, et présence d’une existence » dans Admirable tremblement du temps, il a probablement trouvé une définition convaincante de l’œuvre. Critique, philosophe, enseignant, Directeur général des Arts et des Lettres, penseur en dehors des écoles, il a toute sa vie été proche de la littérature et de la peinture. Par ses articles, ses essais, ses romans, par sa pratique de l’écriture et des œuvres, de l’écriture de l’œuvre, avec son esprit et ses sens, il a fait l’expérience de cette œuvre qu’il a aimée, cherchant son être et les propriétés de son événement. Car l’œuvre demande à celui qui la rencontre d’interroger sa forme, sa signification et son effet. Dans sa réception et son interprétation, dans ce que nous faisons d’elle, l’œuvre appelle l’écriture et interpelle la vie, l’être et la culture que le sujet, en retour, convoque. En quoi se trouve-t-elle alors liée à la conscience, au langage que nous maîtrisons et au monde que nous percevons ? En quoi est-elle issue de l’art, de l’existence et de l’histoire que l’artiste perçoit et existe et qu’elle représente ? When Gaetan Picon wrote in 1970 « Every piece of art is simultaneously a picture, a depiction, and the presence of an existence » in Admirable tremblement du temps, he offered a convincing definition of the nature of a work of art. Critic of art and literature, philosopher, teacher, Director-General of Arts and Letters, and above all an independent thinker, he devoted his life to Art and Literature. Through his articles, essays and novels, his personal experience of writing and artwork, and his writings on art that were infused with his own particular sensibility, he created a new experience out of the beloved artwork, seeking to understand and explain it through personal identification. He considered that each artwork asks the observer to question its form and meaning, and the effect achieved. A work of art requires to be written about, and is a challenge to life, existence and culture in the way it is received and interpreted, in what we make of it. And in return the observer also seeks life, existence and culture. In what way is art related to conscience, to the language that we use, and to the world as we perceive it ? In what way are conscience, history and existence products of art ? In short, how can it exist for us and yet outside of us at the same time ? The questions that Gaetan Picon studied impose necessarily an exploration using multiples perspectives. We must examine at the same time language, performance, the world and creation from attentive reading of his writings. In all of them Gaetan Picon carefully brought new ideas to the experience of art. This present doctoral thesis will offer an interpretation and an acknowledgment of this experience

In its report to the Government of the day, the Taskforce to Review Education Administration in New Zealand (The Picot Committee) made a number of proposals for administrative reform of the primary and secondary school system. It made the following claims as to the benefits which would flow from the adoption of its recommendations: 1. Parents, students, teachers and administration support staff would receive overall educational and social benefits. 2. Local institutions would have discretion over spending 94.5% of a budget of $1,937.7 million. 3. Central organisations would have discretion over the remaining 5.5% of expenditure. 4. Efficiency gains of $93 million would be returned to local institutions for educational use. This study assesses whether these benefits did in fact accrue by looking at the schools in one electorate, the old Lyttelton Electorate. It looks in particular at their financial statements. It asks whether schools in fact did have greater control over their finances, specifically whether the greater discretionary spending which was supposed to flow from decentralisation in fact occurred. The years 1993 and 1994 were selected so as to provide a snapshot of schools' financial situation four years after the Tomorrow's Schools reforms took place. It appears that, in the period in question, census data indicative of socio-economic status of the parents of children in the schools, when linked with schools' accounts, show that the Tomorrow's Schools reforms created less discretionary income for schools at the lower end of the socio-economic spectrum than the reform promises implied and that the greater degree of such income at the higher end of the spectrum was created not by the reforms but by the parents' capacity to generate income additional to government grants.

La vie et l’œuvre de Jacinto Octavio Picón (1852-1923) demeurent fort méconnues de nos jours. Il est vrai que Picón est oublié par la critique et la plupart des chercheurs hispanistes. Pourtant, ses livres méritent beaucoup mieux que l'injuste relégation qu'ils subissent depuis la mort de l'auteur, qui était connu et respecté par ses pairs de son vivant. Toutefois, depuis une trentaine d'années, avec les travaux de Gonzalo Sobejano, relayés par ceux de Noël Valis et d'Esteban Gutiérrez Díaz-Bernardo, entre autres, une redécouverte s'est amorcée. Son travail journalistique vaut aussi la peine d'être étudié et mis en valeur. Notre thèse s'intéresse en effet à un large corpus d'articles et de chroniques de presse rédigés par Picón. Ces textes montrent un critique impartial et consciencieux, et mettent en lumière un écrivain et un intellectuel érudit et sans préjugés, comme en atteste la variété de ses goûts. Picón apprécie et connaît avec profondeur et pénétration aussi bien l'histoire et la philosophie que les beaux-arts, la poésie et le théâtre. Il ne dédaigne pas non plus de prendre part aux débats d'actualité. Il aborde ainsi des questions de société et se fait à cette occasion le témoin attentif de son époque, dont il suit avec intérêt les soubresauts politiques, du règne d'Isabelle II à la Restauration, en passant par la Révolution de 1868 et l'éphémère Première République. The life and works of Jacinto Octavio Picón (1852-1923) remain very unrecognized nowadays. It is true that Picón is forgotten by the critics and most of researchers. His books, which are unfairly put in the background since the author's death, yet deserve much better, although Picón was well-known and respected by his peers in his lifetime. However, since about thirty years, thanks to the studies of Gonzalo Sobejano, followed by the ones of Noël Valis and Esteban Gutiérrez Díaz-Bernardo, among others, it has been rediscovered. His journalistic works are also worth being studied and brought out. Our thesis takes an interest in a large corpus of news articles written by Picón. These texts show us an impartial and conscientious critic, and highlight an erudite writer and intellectual free from prejudice, as his various tastes testify it. Picón estimates and knows deeply history and philosophy as well as fine arts, poetry and theatre. He does not spurn to take part in discussions about current events. He also tackles society topics, and becomes the careful witness of his time, paying attention to political upheavals, from the reign of Isabel II to the Restoration, including the Revolution of 1868 and the fleeting First Republic. Two other subjects : the question of women in the Spanish society of that time, and the sometimes heavy omnipotence of the church, both topics being linked, the unfavourable status of women depending in the main on the conservative influence of the church. In the end, Picon's journalistic writings reveal a coherence of mind, which makes the author of Dulce y sabrosa an original artist, with progressive ideas and eclectic judgements

Experience as an English major, a bookseller, a publishing intern, and a reader has formed questions in my mind about why people read what they do. My interest is focused in two particular "categories" of literature that vie for readers' attention: book clubs and literary awards. Because my skills are in literary interpretation and not societal or industrial analysis, I explored this supposed dichotomy by reading and comparing books from each category. In the "book club" books (My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult and The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards), I found a remarkable familial structure at the core: a daughter with a medical condition; a mother struggling to cope emotionally; a father who distances himself through work and offers profound symbolism via a hobby; an older brother who rebels; an outside couple, professionally involved in the action and romantically involved in each other. The Pulitzer Prize for Fiction-winning books, Gilead by Marilynne Robinson and Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri, stretch farther with voice, style, and imagery. I found them intellectually and personally more satisfying. In addition pursuing academic interests, I also grew to better understand the variety of purposes for which we read. Though I concluded that if all four novels were to be labeled, they should simply be named "middlebrow," I came to appreciate different writers' strengths — research, personal experience, mastery of language — even when they do not match my personal criteria as a reader

S-boxes are the non-linear part of DES cryptosystem. Along the years it has became clear that any kind of edit to the structure of DES S-boxes increases the probability of success of breaking the algorithm, which was very carefully designed. The reason why the S-boxes were built in this way was clarified by Coppersmith, years after the publication of the encryption algorithm. The aim of this thesis is to investigate on Coppersmith’s DES S-boxes design criteria and to evaluate them by way of SAT Solving, in order to analyze the performance of SAT-Solvers for different versions of DES algorithm, in which S-boxes respect only a sample of Coppersmith’s design criteria. This aim is achieved thanks to the implementation of a Python tool: DESBoxGen. The main challenge in the design of DESBoxGen is the one of finding a way to efficiently generating S-boxes satisfying certain criteria.

Quelles que soient les justifications des intentions et des actions, l'atteinte des objectifs de cette intervention dépend en grande partie des modalités de sa spatialisation et plus précisément de sa territorialisation en référence au corps social existant qu'il convient de valoriser.La phase de conduite de projet, demeure ancrée dans un formalisme. Celui-ci est la conséquence de l'ampleur des objectifs opérationnels, des difficultés de coordination d'actions multipartenariales et du suivi financier. Donc, elle laisse peu de place aux représentations habitantes.Dans notre étude, nous avons démontré la nécessité de mobilisation du concept de réceptivité habitante dans son application en aménagement et particulièrement dans les projets d'habitat social. Nous nous sommes attachés à envisager une méthodologie d'opérationnalisation d'une variable qualitative, la réceptivité habitante, dans la conduite de projet d'habitat social.Pour y arriver, nous nous sommes appuyés en particulier sur l'analyse de la réceptivité à travers le cas de la rénovation urbaine du quartier Saint-Barthélemy III Picon-Busserine. Grâce à l'analyse de contenu, nous avons pu démonter la nécessité de procéder à un tournant vers la réceptivité habitante, comme gage de bonne réception des projets d'urbanisme.Cette étude, dans sa finalité, est une contribution méthodologique dans le champ de la conduite de projet dans les quartiers d'habitat social. Urban renewal in social housing areas is in high hopes to revisit through a comprehensive approach to priority neighborhoods said geography and politics of the city. Whatever the justifications intentions and actions, the objectives of this intervention depends largely on the terms of its spatial and more precisely its regionalization in reference to existing social body that should be exploited.This phase of project, through the prism of a formalism induced by the extent of operational objectives, coordination of multi-stakeholder or financial tracking shares, leaving little room for inhabitants representations.In our study, we have demonstrated the need to mobilize the concept of receptivity resident in its application development and particularly in the social housing projects. We endeavored to consider a methodology for operationalizing a categorical variable, the resident receptivity in the conduct of social housing project.To get there, we relied in particular on the analysis of responsiveness through the case of urban renewal of St. Bartholomew III district Picon-Busserine. Through content analysis, we were able to remove the need for a turning resident receptivity as a token of good reception of urban projects.This study, in its finality, is a methodological contribution in the field of project in social housing areas. The golden-lined rabbitfish Siganus lineatus has many assets for its aquaculture, motivating the company Aqualagon to undertake domestication in New Caledonia. Today, Aqualagon seeks to perpetuate its production by eliminating the larval rearing variabilities through a better broodstock management, while facing a lack knowledge on this fish. The original purpose of this thesis is to explore the possibility of setting up a school in Aotearoa (New Zealand) that operates according to the principles and philosophies of Summerhill School in Suffolk, England. An examination of Summerhill School is therefore the purpose of this study, particularly because of its commitment to self-regulation and direct democracy for children. My argument within this study is that Summerhill presents precisely the type of model Māori as Tangata Whenua (Indigenous people of Aotearoa) need in our design of an alternative schooling programme, given that self-regulation and direct democracy are traits conducive to achieving Tino Rangitiratanga (Self-government, autonomy and control). In claiming this however, not only would Tangata Whenua benefit from this model of schooling; indeed it has the potential to serve the purpose of all people regardless of age race or gender. At present, no school in Aotearoa has replicated Summerhill's principles and philosophies in their entirety. Given the constraints of a Master's thesis, this piece of work is therefore only intended as a theoretical background study for a much larger kaupapa (purpose). It is my intention to produce a further and more comprehensive study in the future using Summerhill as a vehicle to initiate a model school in Aotearoa that is completely antithetical to the dominant neo-liberal philosophy of our age. To this end, my study intends to demonstrate how neo-liberal schooling is universally dictated by global money market trends, and how it is an ideology fueled by the indifferent acceptance of the general population. In other words, neo-liberal theory is a theory of capitalist colonisation. In order to address the long term vision, this project will be comprised of two major components. The first will be a study of the principal philosophies that govern Summerhill School. As I will argue, Summerhill creates an environment that is uniquely successful and fulfilling for the children who attend. At the same time, it will also be shown how it is a philosophy that is entirely contrary to a neo-liberal 3 mindset; an antidote, to a certain extent, to the ills of contemporary schooling. The second component will address the historical movement of schooling in Aotearoa since the Labour Party's landslide victory in 1984, and how the New Zealand Curriculum has been affected by these changes. I intend to trace the importation of neo-liberal methodologies into Aotearoa such as the 'Picot Taskforce,' 'Tomorrows Schools' and 'Bulk Funding,' to name but a few. The neo-liberal ideologies that have swept through this country in the last two decades have relentlessly metamorphosised departments into businesses and forced ministries into the marketplace, hence causing the 'ideological reduction of education' and confining it to the parameters of schooling. The purpose of this research project is to act as a catalyst for the ultimate materialization of an original vision; the implementation of a school like Summerhill in Aotearoa. A study of the neo-liberal ideologies that currently dominate this country is imperative in order to understand the current schooling situation in Aotearoa and create an informed comparison between the 'learning for freedom' style of Summerhill and the 'learning to earn' style of our status quo schools. It is my hope to strengthen the argument in favour of Summerhill philosophy by offering an understanding of the difference between the two completely opposing methods of learning.

Bluetooth Piconet has become an important area of research and development in the short-range wireless network system. It is well known that bluetooth causes disturbing interference since sharing frequency band is used in communication channels. This thesis proposes a new and efficient method to solve the retransmission problem that occurs in wireless interference. The proposed method is developed based on average transmit times and margin of grouping to find out the grouping rule of the Bluetooth Piconet. A computer simulation shows in this thesis that the performance of the proposed group assignment approach is much bettter than can be obtained by other conventional means. Furthermore, in order to reduce retransmit time and save time-slot, a new packet combine retransmit method is developed based on different reliability of packet's transmit conditions in this thesis. As a consequence, for total duty cycle and time slots, the proposed packet combine retransmit method obtains a better performance than the conventional retransmit method.

The direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) ultra-band wireless networks employ IEEE 802.15.3 media access control (MAC) protocol. We explore carefully the IEEE 802.15.3 standard in detail in our study for multi-piconet applications. In order to variegate the application on high-rate UWB WPANs and expand the network coverage, we regulate the inter-piconet connection scheme, so that we could transmit data between different piconets by multi-hop relay.   Then, we propose a centralized scheme to schedule and control the switching policy of bridge devices in this environment to solve data-loss and delay problems caused by multi-hop transmissions. Furthermore, a simulation platform for 802.15.3 network is built to examine performance of our proposal schemes. Some suggestions are proposed according to the simulation results.

In the recent years, connecting every devices by wireless networks is a popular application as 802.11 related techniques matured. IEEE(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) not only defines 802.11, but also 802.15.3a which is a WPAN(wireless personal area network) standard based on UWB (ultra wideband) techniques. There are two groups desiring to define the physical layer of 802.15.3a. One uses DS-CDMA(Direct-Sequence Code-Division Multiple Access); the other, the union of MBOA, claims the MB-OFDM(Multi-Band Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing). The protocols of media access control of the two physical layers are very different. This paper is focused on DS-CDMA techniques and related MAC standard, 802.15.3 . Our proposed algorithms try to efficiently transmit data among multi-piconet. A distributed strategy is employed to schedule BDEV(bridge device) to reduce delay. The proposed scheduling scheme could effectively reduce the end-to-end delay. However, due to the limitations of 802.15.3, the end-to-end delay may be too large to meet the QoS requirement of multimedia. Additionally, 802.15.3 MAC is not originally proposed for UWB technology. It may not take the advantages of UWB without modifying the relative MAC parameters. We proposed a set of MAC parameters, proven by simulation, which can efficiently raise the channel utilization and lower the transmitting delay during CAP(contention access period). Finally, as we know, there are no researches about 802.15.3 multi-piconet. The related works about 802.15.3 MAC are all focusing on single piconet. We try to explore the possible issues in this area, and realize a simulation platform for future researchers who are interested in multi-piconet UWB networks.

HR-WPAN can be the communication interface of the home entertainment systems. The 802.15.3 is a new HR-WPAN standard. It doesn’t define how to construct a scatter-net. The proposed formation protocol can construct a multi-hop environment. By the proposed formation protocol, all devices that equipped with 802.15.3 can be placed more arbitrarily. The feature piconet of the proposed formation protocol can avoid “Hidden Terminal Problem” in CAP and make the network robust. “Dynamic Bridge Adjustment” can reduce the hops between the devices. “Bridge Broadcast Scheme” makes inter-piconet communication possible and the routing protocols can work. Without collecting information on neighbors, the performance in the aspect of the formatted topologies of the proposed formation protocol is not second to the one thatneed collect neighbor information. The simulation results validate the results.

In the recent years, the development of the wireless communication is ripe and rapid. In numerous wireless technologies, Bluetooth is low cost, low power consumption, low interference and short-range wireless communication technology and be used to replace the cable connection. In the Bluetooth specification, the piconet is a basic unit in Bluetooth network. A piconet is composed of one node which is called master and the other nodes (up to seven) called slave. Because Bluetooth operates in a strictly master-slave paradigm, the transmission of slave node is passive. All transmissions should pass through the master node, the master node need to decide when to transmit and how long the transmission continued. We call this intra-piconet scheduling. In this paper we proposed a scheduling algorithm which considers both real-time and non real-time traffic. We use Asynchronous Connectionless Link (ACL) to carry real-time data and support schedule on non real-time traffic to prevent the overall performance from degrading significantly. Besides, we decrease the computation overhead of our scheduling algorithm by detecting the traffic situation in the piconet. If the variation of the traffic situation is large, the schedule needs to change.

Ultra wideband (UWB) communication is a potential new technique for replacing high-speed data cables in homes and offices. UWB technology will be capable of transmitting hundreds of megabits per second over distances of several meters. Multi-band (MB) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system is one of the most innovative UWB techniques. MB OFDM system utilizes only 500 MHz instantaneous bandwidth and dividing that frequency band into smaller simultaneously transmitted subcarriers. In this thesis, a MB OFDM receiver is proposed, which mitigates the intercarrier interference (ICI) induced by a long delay spread channel and avoids the interference from other piconet, respectively. Performance of a MB OFDM system is typically significantly degraded due to long delay spread channels. Although the minimum mean-square error (MMSE) equalizer can solve this problem, the matrix inverse computation is too complex for the MB OFDM system. To alleviate this problem, the decision-aided ICI canceller is designed to improve the influence of ICI. On the other hand, the four unique time-frequency interleaving codes are adopted to reduce the effect of cochannel interference (CCI) from simultaneously operating piconets (SOP). Furthermore, we proposed an interference avoidance transmission scheme which turns off the collided frequency slots and conveys signal in the interference-free frequency slots. Finally, we evaluate the performance of the proposed system and confirm that it works well in a UWB environment.

In recent years, much attention has been given to the wireless communication and the mobility is the most important trend in the future. Thus, many wireless technologies have been proposed and standardized. Among these novel technologies, Bluetooth attracts much attention in short range wireless technology through low cost, low battery power consumption, and low interference. Bluetooth scatternets are formed by piconets, the basic network unit of Bluetooth, sharing common device(s). These inter-piconet devices, i.e. the bridges are responsible for the forwarding of inter-piconet traffic but they can not participate in two or more piconets simultaneously. Thus, this require inter-piconet scheduling algorithm to do time division multiplex for their presence in each piconet.   In this paper, we proposed a new inter-piconet scheduling algorithm based on HOLD mode, a power saving mode of Bluetooth to reduce the average delay of inter-piconet packets and increase the utilization of bridge. The main reason of delay in inter-piconet traffic is that bridge wastes time to be idle in a empty piconet and the inter-piconet packets must wait this time period in other piconets. Thus, our proposed scheme decides the time duration which the bridge should spend in different piconet according to the traffic pattern that decrease the probability of bridge is idle. In proposed inter-piconet scheduling algorithm, there is no need to modify the specification of Bluetooth and add any other device so that it is easy to implement and join to specification of Bluetooth. Finally, the result of simulation presents the low average delay, high throughput, and the scalability in our proposed inter-piconet scheduling algorithm.

Bluetooth is a wireless communication technology that can be used for cable replacement. In this thesis, we propose a QoS-aware scheduling for scatternet routes with mobile devices. Firstly, we study several Intra-Piconet and Inter-Piconet scheduling algorithms. These scheduling algorithms do not fully support QoS on scatternet route. The RR approach is a fair scheduling but does not support QoS. The ERMRR approach can strongly support QoS on scatternet route but suffer from the starvation problem. Thus, we combine the scheduling approaches of Round Robin (RR) and the Exhaustive Route-Member Round Robin (ERMRR) into the - Route-Member Round Robin( -RMRR), which can support QoS on RM slaves and provides good fairness for the slaves. Moreover, we conduct simulation study to evaluate and compare the performance of the three different scheduling approaches. Finally, we also verify the proposed -RMRR approach. Our simulation results shows that the -RMRR is effective for supporting QoS on scatternet routes with mobile devices and provide good fairness.
