Abstract:
David Bordwell argues that Annette Michelson's impact on film criticism was comparable to Andrew Sarris's. In unearthing the strategies or “schema” regularly used by critics to interpret avant-garde films, he shows that Michelson pioneered an innovative understanding of modernist art as being about human perception and cognition. This new interpretive paradigm proved hugely influential, in part due to Michelson's institutional roles as teacher, translator, and editor.

This research uses qualitative descriptive research methods. The results of the editor's role through the first three stages, the first offline editing stage, at this stage an editor can play a role in shooting with a cameraman whose goal is to know the picture during the editing process later, and data checking. Further more the online editing stage, at this stage an editor checks equipment on the editing equipment, has its own notes for editing (according to the script), content and video visuals, editors must have the creativity issued When content editing and video visuals take place. The last stage is mixing (merging between sound and video), at this stage the sound and video must be balanced and at this stage also there are additional sounds such as sound effect, and backsound if needed. From these three stages, an editor can produce programs, both and interestingly the program is in the editor and creativity of the editors package the program, hence the editor is very important to manage the program that will be aired on audiences. Conoley, Colleen Adele. "Differential item functioning in the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test - Third Edition: partial correlation versus expert judgment." Diss., Texas A&M University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/151.

Full text
Abstract:
This study had three purposes: (1) to identify differential item functioning (DIF) on the PPVT-III (Forms A & B) using a partial correlation method, (2) to find a consistent pattern in items identified as underestimating ability in each ethnic minority group, and (3) to compare findings from an expert judgment method and a partial correlation method. Hispanic, African American, and white subjects for the study were provided by American Guidance Service (AGS) from the standardization sample of the PPVT-III; English language learners (ELL) of Mexican descent were recruited from school districts in Central and South Texas. Content raters were all self-selected volunteers, each had advanced degrees, a career in education, and no special expertise of ELL or ethnic minorities. Two groups of teachers participated as judges for this study. The "expert" group was selected because of their special knowledge of ELL students of Mexican descent. The control group was all regular education teachers with limited exposure to ELL. Using the partial correlation method, DIF was detected within each group comparison. In all cases except with the ELL on form A of the PPVT-III, there were no significant differences in numbers of items found to have significant positive correlations versus significant negative correlations. On form A, the ELL group comparison indicated more items with negative correlation than positive correlation [χ2 (1) = 5.538; p=.019]. Among the items flagged as underestimating ability of the ELL group, no consistent trend could be detected. Also, it was found that none of the expert judges could adequately predict those items that would underestimate ability for the ELL group, despite expertise. Discussion includes possible consequences of item placement and recommendations regarding further research and use of the PPVT-III.

Choi, Hoon. "Correcting the Record: a Comparison of Vladimir Ashkenazy’s Urtext-based Edition of Pictures at an Exhibition with Orchestration By Ravel and Stokowski." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2012. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc149572/.

Full text
Abstract:
Modest Mussorgsky (1839-1881) never published his piano suite, Pictures at an Exhibition. The first publication of the Pictures was Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s (1844-1908) piano edition in 1886, five years after Mussorgsky’s death. Among several piano editions of Pictures, Manfred Schandert’s urtext piano edition of 1984 has shed new light on the piano suite. The urtext edition is based on a facsimile of Mussorgsky’s autograph, and Schandert’s authoritative urtext contains all of Mussorgsky’s musical indications that previous editions neglected to include. Previous orchestrations based on less comprehensive editions include well-known orchestrations by Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) and Leopold Stokowski (1882-1977). Vladimir Ashkenazy (b. 1937), on the other hand, derived his orchestration directly from the Schandert edition. In this study I argue that Ashkenazy offers “corrections” to his predecessors, Ravel and Stokowski, whose orchestrations differ—at times radically—from Mussorgsky’s autograph. This dissertation thus will explore the significant features of Ashkenazy’s orchestration in relation to the urtext edition by comparing it to the orchestrations of Ravel and Stokowski. In an age of attempts to present “authentic” versions of past music, Ashkenazy’s orchestration provides an authenticity that other orchestrations lack. Ashkenazy’s orchestration of Pictures at an Exhibition provides conductors an alternative performance option that is both effective and more closely related to Mussorgsky’s autograph.

Ng, Agnes Oi Kee. "Relationships among the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale : Fourth Edition, the Peabody Picture Vocabulary test-Revised and teacher rating for Canadian Chinese elementary age students." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/31247.

Full text
Abstract:
The use of standardized tests in the assessment of ethnic students who speak English as a second language has become an important issue in Canada due to the increasing number of immigrant students in the school system. The subjects of this study were a group of 34 Canadian born, bilingual Chinese third graders with at least three years of schooling in English. They were tested on two standardized tests and the results were compared with the standardization population. The study also investigated the correlations among these two measures and an informal teacher rating scale. The subjects were found to perform more than one standard deviation below the norm on the Peabody Picture Vocabulary test - Revised, which is a test of receptive language. Chinese speaking home environments and the culturally biased items in the test might have resulted in the significantly low score obtained by the subjects. On the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale: Fourth Edition, the subjects did not perform significantly different from the norm on the Test Composite, Verbal Reasoning, Abstract/Visual Reasoning, Short-Term Memory and seven subtests. They did score significantly higher than the norm on Pattern Analysis, Matrices, Number Series and Quantitative Reasoning and significantly lower on Copying and Memory for Sentences. When compared with a group of Asian subjects (ages 7-11) from the Stanford-Binet standardization sample, the subjects performed significantly higher on Quantitative Reasoning and lower on Short-term Memory. As consistent with the results of previous research, the subjects in the present study excelled in visual/perceptual and mathematical tests. It is possible that their (English Language) proficiency may have brought about significantly low score in Memory for Sentences. The four reasoning area scores on the Stanford-Binet were found to be significantly different from each other with the subjects' highest score in Quantitative Reasoning and the lowest in Short-Term Memory. Correlations among the three measures reached statistical significance ranging from the thirties to the sixties. Teacher rating correlated equally well with the standardized tests as there was no significant difference among the correlations. However, the correlations indicated that though these tests shared something in common, in practice, they cannot be used interchangeably. The study concluded that the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test - Revised may not be an appropriate instrument for measuring the receptive language of Chinese students who have English as their second language. The Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale: Fourth Edition could be considered a valid measure of the cognitive ability of this group of students. The positive and significant correlations among Teacher Rating and standardized tests indicate that teachers' perception of student ability parallels what formal testing reveals.<br>Education, Faculty of<br>Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education (ECPS), Department of<br>Graduate

Church, Rex W. "An investigation of the value of the Peabody picture vocabulary test-revised and the Slosson intelligence test as screening instruments for the fourth edition of the Stanford-Binet intelligence scale." Virtual Press, 1986. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/467365.

Full text
Abstract:
The Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-Revised (PPVT-R) and Slosson Intelligence Test (SIT) were designed, at least in part, to provide a quick estimate of scores which might be obtained on the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale, Form L -M, without requiring extensive technical training by the examiner. Both the PPVT-R and SIT are frequently used as screening instruments to identify children for possible placement in special education programs, remedial reading groups, speech and language therapy, gifted programs, or "tracks." This study investigated the value of the PPVT-R and SIT as screening instruments for the Fourth Edition Stanford-Binet.Fifty students, grades kindergarten through fifth, were randomly selected to participate in the study. All subjects were involved in regular education at least part-time. Subjects were administered the PPVT R, SIT, and Fourth Edition Binet by a single licensed school psychologist. The administration order of the instruments was randomized. Participants were tested on consecutive school days (10) until all subjects had been administered the three instruments.Correlation coefficients were determined for the Standard Score of the PPVT-R and each Standard Age Score of the Binet (four area scores and one total test score), as well as for the SIT IQ score and each Standard Age Score of the Binet. All correlations were positive and significant beyond the p<.Ol level except between the PPVT-R and Binet Quantitative Reasoning.Analyses of Variance were used to determine mean differences of scores obtained on the three instruments. Significant differences (p<.05) were found between scores on the PPVT-R and Abstract/Visual Reasoning, SIT and Verbal Reasoning, SIT and Short-Term Memory, SIT and Abstract/Visual Reasoning, and SIT and Total Test Composite. Results indicated that, in general, the SIT is a better predictor of Fourth Edition Binet scores than the PPVT R, however frequently yielded significantly different scores. It was concluded that neither the PPVT R nor SIT should be used as a substitute for more comprehensive measures of intellectual functioning, and caution should be used when interpreting their results. Much more research is needed to clarify the diagnostic value of the Fourth Edition Stanford-Binet as a psychometric instrument.

Abstract:
The diploma thesis called Visual Style of the National Geographic Magazine (1914, 1964, 2014) is focused on the visual part of this American monthly magazine, that is renowned for its long-standing photography tradition. In the theoretical part the historic development of the National Geographic monthly magazine is summarized, characteristic features of its photographs are defined and compared to the different photographic genres. With relation to the magazine, issues of visual gatekeeping are discussed. The theoretical part is accompanied by examples of published photo manipulations and a chapter about the image-text relation is provided. The analytical part aims at the development of photographic techniques and photographic content in the selected years 1914, 1964 and 2014. Using the method of content analysis this work deals with over 1000 photographs and allocates them in different coding categories. It is explored which category or characteristic features were typical for each period, for example in connection with gender, locations or the way of capturing the image. The results of content analysis are put into context by semiotic study which is based on the methods of philosopher Roland Barthes. In addition to that, the analytical part is supplemented with the analysis of selected visual...

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺南藝術大學<br>音樂學系碩士班<br>103<br>This paper is based on Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky and includes six chapters. The first is a discussion of the reason for this research, Pictures at an Exhibition, and the method used for comparing the editions. Chapter two addresses the background of the era and is divided into three parts starting with an introduction to 19th-century Russian culture, the influence of the politics of the time and the development of Russian critical realism. The works of Ivan Kramskoi and Ilya Repin are used as examples for discussing the painting styles and contemporary society. The last describes the musical style of Mikhail Glinka and The Five. The importance of Russian musical education as promoted by the Rubinstein Brothers is also discussed. Chapter three investigates the background of this work, the cultivation and the musical style of Mussorgsky as well as his connection with the architect Victor Hartmann. In chapter four a comparison is made between the composer’s manuscript and the Bessel edition by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Vladimir Stasov that explains the superiority of the original Mussorgsky manuscript. Chapter five details an interpretation of this work in eleven parts. The discussion includes aspects of tempo, rhythm, melody, dynamics and pedal. Then, it describes the atmosphere of each piece in both objective and subjective views. Chapter six is an overview of the comparisons of form, key and tempo, and explains a connection to the images of death.

Abstract:
Aim/Purpose: In our previous paper, we have proposed a methodology to deliver an applied business course to the multicultural audience having in mind embedding into the course cultural sensitivity and create a safe place for multicultural students to use own cultural metaphors in a learning place. We have proposed a fusion of ancient storytelling tradition creating an overall context for the teaching process and specific use of rich picture coming from Soft System Methodology (SSM). The used teaching approach is promising and brings the required results. However, the proposed method, to be fully effective requires a computerized supporting tool in a form of sophisticated graphical editor/presentation application displaying in real-time case study progress along with the in-class discussion. This tool is a central topic for this paper. Background: The existing tools like for example MS PowerPoint, MS Visio, or Prezi used by us so far cannot be used for our purpose as the interactive image update distract the students. The MS PowerPoint and Prezi require visible mode switching between design mode (edit) and presentation mode. Whereas MS Visio editing is too slow for our purposes. This switching or editing time create a meaningful distraction during the discussion. Methodology: As a solution for the above problem, the authors work on the development of own specialized tool using open source software Blender 3D (http://blender.org) along with Python. The code will be released to open source domain to enable further co-operation with other researchers. Contribution: The described effort, if successful, should create a new presentation tool allowing among the other features, seamless in-class knowledge transfer and in the future will enable the way for gamification of case studies. Impact on Society: A definite improvement of teaching quality in applied business (however, not limited to) with further possibility to extend to deliver courses e.g. for company’s executives. The tool and methodology allow embedding cultural sensitivity into the learning process and will have an impact on digital inclusiveness. Future Research: The tool enables possibility for further analysis of the business situation by artificial intelligence interface. In fact, a whole interactive process of reaching the case conclusion may be observed (allowing collecting analytics and insights on teacher and student’s behavior and performance).

The number of design studies using statistical testing has increased dramatically over the past decade. While this has benefits, statistical testing requires scrutiny to protect against common errors and misconceptions. To illuminate how these issues affect design, this paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the past decade of studies within the DTM community. Specifically, the paper 1) reviews the background of statistical testing across multiple fields, highlighting recommended practices, 2) discusses its use in the Design community, and 3) provides concrete methods for authors and reviewers to evaluate statistical tests employed in Design Cognition studies. The analysis identifies recurring issues with: ignoring multiple comparisons; deficiencies in study and result reporting; inadequate defense of modeling assumptions; unavailable plots, data, and analysis files for replication; and lack of interpretation of statistical results with respect to practical outcomes or alternate forms of scientific inquiry. Based upon practices already adopted in other research communities, we put forth: 1) checklists that help authors and reviewers verify data reporting, analysis, and statistical assumptions; and 2) design guidelines for creating more reproducible design experiments. Ultimately, we argue that design researchers, reviewers, and editors should view statistical testing less like a sword and more like a scalpel — a specialized tool best used in concert with other techniques — to gain a more complete picture of Design Cognition.

Abstract:
Pipeline dents are common occurrences that have a potential integrity threat to the system. Dents are typically found through in-line inspections, and historically, low-resolution in-line inspection geometry tools were used to find the locations of dents. These tools gave little information about shape, orientation or other dent features. Newer ‘high-resolution’ tools give a much clearer picture of the dent shape, location, orientation and location of welds. This information has been previously unavailable and has enabled dent integrity assessment with much greater accuracy and confidence. However this still leaves the question of how to best address the information from older, low-resolution inspection tools. In the past, CSA Z662 required that all dents with a deflection greater than 6% or that contained stress concentrators, including welds, had to be repaired. In the newly published 2003 edition of CSA Z662, dents can be assessed by an engineering assessment to determine their acceptability. Historical evidence has shown that dents less than 6% can also be subject to failure under certain conditions, and is indicated in the notes of CSA Z662-03 10.8.2.4.2. Dents that contain stress concentrators, including corrosion, welds and cracks must be given special consideration, however often little information is available for the dent from solely a geometry tool. TransCanada PipeLines Limited has been involved in the development of a dent assessment methodology for several years. Based on the 2003 revisions to CSA Z662, TransCanada has started to implement a dent integrity management program. This paper discusses the approach taken by TransCanada: to create a database of dent features, classification of dents, finite element analysis (FEA) to determine cyclic stress spectra, fatigue analysis, validation through dig programs, and the management of these features from a system integrity standpoint.

Abstract:
Computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software is used to develop a process plan, which consists of an operations list, tool paths, tooling, process parameters, and depending on the system, material handling operations. Upon completing the development of a process plan, setup sheets are generated for the personnel involved in the setup, production, testing, and product validation activities for a product. Typically, this documentation is in a hardcopy format, or is a static electronic document, and the direction of the communication is unidirectional — from the process planner to the support personnel. With the ubiquitous communications tools available to individuals today, a more sophisticated approach should be taken to transmit, store, and communicate changes to and from the shop floor. Presently, standard setup documentation consists of the project information utilized for the developed process plan. Pictures such as screen captures of the tool path, virtual verification images, and physical elements such as specialty tools may be included. However, modifications are made continuously to improve the cycle time, quality, or to adjust for other product or process changes. This research focuses on the development of interactive setup sheets that utilize existing desktop CAD/CAM software and mobile technologies, with the potential for leveraging the advantages of manufacturing cloud computing. Videos, links to additional documentation, and the ability to edit a subset of process parameters such as a tool diameter are incorporated. The operator is able to physically change tools or other key process setup information, and then send the information to the CAM system in order to regenerate the updated tool paths and documentation. Complementing the flexible, agile, and reconfigurable paradigms is the communication flexibility provided by fast wireless networks along with, cloud computing resources that can accessed with mobile devices, which are ubiquitous in today’s society. This technology that has not yet been heavily employed in the manufacturing environment, and research leveraging these new tools need to be explored.

"Regulatory Actions That Hinder Development of Effective Risk Reduction Measures by the Nuclear Industry for Enhanced Severe Accident Prevention and Mitigation Measures After Fukushima." Abstract:
The official report of The Fukushima Nuclear Accident Independent Investigation Commission concluded that “The TEPCO Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant accident was the result of collusion between the government, the regulators and TEPCO, and the lack of governance by said parties. They effectively betrayed the nation’s right to be safe from nuclear accidents. Therefore, we conclude that the accident was clearly ‘manmade.’ We believe that the root causes were the organizational and regulatory systems that supported faulty rationales for decisions and actions, rather than issues relating to the competency of any specific individual.” This wakeup call for the nuclear power utilities should require a public review of their relationship with of regulators. However, severe accident related risk reduction is a relatively uncharted territory and given the apparent lack of in-house technical expertise, the regulators are heavily relying on the qualitative and ‘hand waving’ arguments being presented by the utilities inherently disinterested in further investments they are not required to make under original license conditions. As a result, it has accelerated further deterioration of the safety culture and emboldened many within the regulatory staff to undertake or support otherwise questionable decisions in support of the utilities that prefer status quo. Case in point is the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) which mostly accepts any and all requests by the nuclear power industry. After Fukushima, the CNSC took a year to publish a set of ‘Action Items’ for the Canadian Nuclear industry to prepare plans over 3 years and then accepted most if not all submissions that in many cases barely addressed the already watered down recommendations. In some cases the solutions proposed by the industry were economically expedient but technically flawed; and some could even be considered dangerous. CNSC also published a study on consequences of a severe accident with a source term that was limited to the desirable safety goal (100 TBq of Cs-137), which coincidently years later matched the utility ‘calculations’, but orders of magnitude smaller than predicted by independent evaluations. As a result, some well publicized conclusions on the benign nature of consequences of a CANDU severe accident were made and the local and provincial agencies that actually are supposed to prepare off-site emergency measures were left with an incorrect picture of what havoc a severe accident can cause otherwise. CNSC then published a much publicized video highlighting the available operator actions to terminate the accident early and later a report outlining the accident progression for a severe accident without operator action with conclusions that were immediately technically suspect from a variety of aspects. The aim was to claim that a severe core damage accident has no unfavorable off-site consequences. The regulator effectively, in this case, comes across as a promoter for the industry it is legislated to regulate. The paper outlines examples of actions being taken by the regulators that hinder development of effective risk reduction measures by the industry which otherwise would be forced to undertake them if the regulators had not stepped on the plate to bat for them. They vary from letters to editors to silence any safety concerns raised by the public, muzzling of its own staff, trying to silence external specialists who question their wisdom on to blatant disregard for any intervention by public they are required to entertain by law but are accustomed to factually ignore or belittle. The paper also outlines a number of examples of actions that an independent regulator would undertake to reduce the risk and enhance the safety culture. The nuclear regulatory regimes work well generally but in cases where it does not, the results can be disastrous as evident from the events in Japan and as is building up in Canada. The paper also summarizes the disparities between the number of Regulatory Actions instituted by the CNSC against small companies that use nuclear substances for industrial applications and almost none actions against the nuclear power plant utilities it regularly grants a pass in spite of the larger risk their operations pose to public.
