Abstract:
David Bordwell argues that Annette Michelson's impact on film criticism was comparable to Andrew Sarris's. In unearthing the strategies or “schema” regularly used by critics to interpret avant-garde films, he shows that Michelson pioneered an innovative understanding of modernist art as being about human perception and cognition. This new interpretive paradigm proved hugely influential, in part due to Michelson's institutional roles as teacher, translator, and editor.

Abstract:
To pick another nit, the name Munchausen is an anglicization apparently coined by R. E. Raspe and his English publisher in 1786 and since perpetuated. Freiherr von Münchhausen, after whose tall tales the syndrome was named, not only spelled his name with two hs, as noted by Meadow and Lennert (Pediatrics 1984;74:554-556), but also with an umlaut over the first u. Interestingly, Meadow and Lennert's article carried a picture of a book printed in Germany with the name correctly spelled on the cover but they, this editor and the copy editor all missed the discrepancy!

People of elderly and senile age account for 14% of the population in Kazan, they account for up to 60% of outpatient visits. However, even these figures do not give a complete picture of the level of morbidity of this contingent, because some of them, even in severe cases, do not go to the doctor, considering their condition normal for their age or incurable. This is often confirmed by doctors, trying in some way to justify the lack of a positive therapeutic effect and thereby causing irreparable harm to the patient. If we consider that the proportion of older age groups is currently growing, we can assume that in the near future healthcare will have to address the acute problems associated with health care for the elderly and seniors. Many of them are already overdue.

Stories tend to focus on individual teachers and schools, with less discussion of the big picture behind those stories. The tone of coverage has varied over time, with about 54% overall being negative and 43% positive. Overt criticism of teachers was rare, and teacher voices were included in a slim majority of stories.

Abstract:
Purpose – This paper aims to present a way to make structural equation modelling (SEM) studies more accessible and impactful. This paper suggests that authors service readers by translating their work into an infographic that clearly and artfully illustrates the essence of a paper’s contribution. Design/methodology/approach – Through the presentation of a worked example, this paper outlines four service components needed to create a visually striking, yet informative, infographic. Findings – This paper contends that authors who follow this approach will improve the marketability of their research without oversimplifying or “dumbing down” its insights. Research limitations/implications – Until a journal editor insists that modellers undertake some translation of their results as a pre-requisite to publication, this paper is unlikely to herald a revolution in how quantitative work is communicated. Practical implications – This fresh thinking can offer a way for practicing managers, and other marketing researchers unfamiliar with SEM’s peculiarities, to comprehend the findings of such studies. Originality/value – This paper contributes to a nascent body of research on how to effectively disseminate research findings to a broader audience through adopting a service arts perspective and presents an interpretive view of quantitative research never seen before in the pages of this journal.

Inventor of the hand-held stereoscope and “autocrat of the breakfast table,” the editor of the Atlantic Monthly proved himself, in an important series of articles on photography, a master of rhetoric. Behind the Epicurean touches with which he colored the “mirror with a memory” – the most “audacious, remote, improbable” discovery of human ingenuity – and through the irony of his thundering philosophical conclusions – “form is henceforth divorced from matter,” which “as a visible object is of no great use any longer” – the modern reader perceives O. W. Holmes's keen awareness of the documentary possibilities born of photography. In this essay, it is one of the first sketches of such a “Bank of Nature” that I shall examine.

Abstract:
AbstractMotivated by the worldwide debate on gender equality, we analyzed the gender structure of the authors and the editorial board of Naunyn–Schmiedeberg’s Archives of Pharmacology. We wrote an algorithm to assign authors’ first names to a gender to determine the gender distribution of publications. We evaluated publications from German research institutes from 2000 to 2020. This resulted in a data set of 2929 authors. We could assign a first name to almost all authors. The percentage of female authors increased until 2008, but thereafter stagnated at around 30%. The position of senior author is far less often held by women (around 15%). Even though multiple political measures were implemented to increase the female participation, our analysis has shown no increase regardless. We also observed a strong decrease in German authorship (both male and female) since 2000. In the editorial board and for advisory editors, there has been a substantial increase in the proportion of women since 2016 as the result of appointments by the editor-in-chief. We discuss the strengths and limitations of our study in context with the literature and current developments in society and science and methodological pitfalls of studies in this field. More research is required to obtain a full picture of gender structure in science and to be able to properly interpret the data.

Abstract:
The “Soviet and Post-Soviet Sexualities” collection consists of 10 articles which are either devoted to changes in attitudes towards non-normative sexuality during the Soviet era or describe the current state of affairs in some post-Soviet countries. Even though most of the works collected in the book are focused on contemporary Russian society—and many post-Soviet states have completely disappeared from the field of view of the authors and the editor—the reader is presented with a diverse picture, including various topics related to non-normative sexualities in multiple contexts. Although some articles are not without flaws in methodology, analysis, and argumentation, the collection is certainly an important contribution to the studies of Soviet and post-Soviet sexualities since it reveals new, still under-researched aspects of this area.

Abstract:
The article developed the mathematical model for the synthesis of ornamental images and implemented the software editor of ornamental images, based on symmetry theory. The paper shows the fundamental role of symmetry. It is analyzed that the symmetry theory methods are used in physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering. It was found that symmetry is based on transformation and storage. In addition, the symmetrical system is based on a set of invariants that are built according to certain rules. It is shown that the symmetry of borders and the symmetry of mesh ornaments are used in ornaments. The synthesis of ornamental images is considered on the example of Ukrainian folk embroidery. The contribution of foreign and domestic scientists to the development of the symmetry theory and synthesis of images is analyzed. It is indicated that Ukrainian folk embroidery is the valuable property of the cultural and material heritage of people and an important source of research. It is analyzed that there are more than 100 types of different embroidery techniques. The role of famous Ukrainian artists in the popularization and organization of Ukrainian folk embroidery museums is presented. It is investigated that embroidery is built from separate motives or from ornaments. Ornaments consist of sub-ornaments. A sub-ornament is a pattern consisting of rhythmically ordered identical elements (built on one group transformation). Subornaments are divided into reports. The report is called the minimum for the area of the area that can cover the sub-ornament, using only transfers. The report, in turn, is divided into even smaller particles: motive or elementary picture. It is found that in embroidery ornaments there are 7 groups of stripe and 12 - plan. Mathematical models of images-ornaments synthesis for groups of a strip and plan groups are developed. Mathematical models are given for ideal ornaments. If offsets of axes or centers of symmetries, it is necessary to adjust the coefficients of transformation matrices displacement. Samples of embroidered ornaments of the corresponding plane and stripe groups are provided. Editor of image-ornaments has been developed, which allows the synthesis of complex ornamental images based on analytical formulas of elementary picture, sub-ornament, and ornament. Examples of real and synthesized samples of Ukrainian folk embroidery are provided. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the development of mathematical models of ornaments on the basis of symmetry groups on the strip and the plane. The practical value of the work lies in the development of an image editor-ornaments.

Abstract:
William Randolph Hearst became editor and proprietor of the San Francisco Examiner in 1887, and by 1935, he had assembled a media empire consisting of nearly 30 major newspapers, 13 magazines, 8 radio stations, 3 news wires, and 2 motion picture companies. Most scholarship about Hearst has focused on his newspapers; less studied have been the magazines he acquired early in the 20th century. This monograph examines immigrant representations in Hearst magazines published between 1905 and 1945, focusing on how magazine fiction, nonfiction, and “fact-fiction” articles presented immigrants and immigration as social and political issues. Like Hearst himself, the publications favored immigrants from Germany and the Scandinavian countries of northern Europe and tended to disfavor those from China and Japan and, to a lesser extent, Mexico. According to the magazines, immigrants from the Far East and Mexico were “undesirables” who threatened society by, allegedly, importing, selling, and using hazardous drugs. Newspaper advertisements, news articles, and editorials extended these portrayals to wider audiences. Hearst also applied cross-media promotion to motion pictures, with writers converting fiction from his magazines into screenplays for Cosmopolitan Productions and MGM. The monograph contains examples of how magazine content and iconic covers have informed contemporary films and television series. In recent years, stylized representations have glamorized lifestyles but have also perpetuated cultural stereotypes that may contribute to anti-immigrant attitudes.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to profile the Worldwide Hospitality and Tourism Themes (WHATT) theme issue “Expo 2020: What will be the impact on Dubai?” with reference to the experiences of the theme editor and writing team. Design/methodology/approach This paper uses structured questions to enable the theme editor to reflect on the rationale for the theme issue question, the starting point, the selection of the writing team and material and the editorial process. Findings This paper provides a framework to facilitate discussion between academics and practitioners engaged with Dubai’s Expo 2020, identifies ways of improving competitiveness as an events destination and contributes to thinking about sustainable development before and after the event. The outcomes of a broad-ranging collaboration yield fresh insights, a deeper understanding of the issues and an array of possible responses to the theme issue question. Practical implications The theme issue outcomes provide lines of enquiry for others to explore and they reinforce the value of WHATT’s approach to collaborative working and writing. Originality/value The collaborative work reported in this theme issue offers a unified but contrarian response to the theme’s strategic question. Taken together, the collection of articles provides a detailed picture of the on-going preparation for Expo 2020 and plans to ensure continued growth in the post-Expo phase.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTPaulist priest James Martin Gillis was highly influenced in his youth by his Boston Irish heritage, as well as Sulpician and Paulist clergy who imbued in him a sense of Catholic idealism that stressed the dignity and value of the human person. He perceived the world to be filled with the presence of God. Yet, as a commentator on America from his positions as editor ofthe Catholic Worldand a weekly syndicated column,Sursum Corda, Gillis saw his idyllic picture of America's role in god's plan in serious peril through the domestic and international policies of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Through his various organs Gillis championed the conservative Catholic voice in the period 1922 to 1948, speaking against statism and general government invasion in the domain of the individual. He thus represents a voice generally counter to the American Catholic mainstream of the period.

Abstract:
To the Editor.— I am alarmed by the article by Garcia and Moodie1 on "Routine Cholesterol Surveillance in Childhood" that appeared in the November 1989 issue of Pediatrics—alarmed not because they found about 20% of their study had hypercholesterolemia and not because almost half of these children would not have been detected if only children from families with known risk factors had been screened. What is alarming is that people with knowledge of only one part of a complex picture can publish in a respected national pediatric journal sweeping recommendations such as "...all children should have a random, nonfasting cholesterol test performed"; and, after a lipid profile is done in those who are positive on the initial screening, "...the large group of children with hypercholesterolemia identified should be part of a well designed study to evaluate the efficacy of drug therapy..."

As editor Bruce Tidor sets it in the preface of the book, published in the volume of the MIT Essential Knowledge series: ‘Synthesizing specialized subject matter for non-specialists and engaging critical topics through fundamentals, each of these compact volumes offers readers a point of access to complex ideas.’ (Costandi, 2016). In this book of the series Moheb Costandi provides the reader with a celar and coherent picture about neuroplasticity and neurogenesis . Not just at the level of theories and research results, but also regarding various stages of practical application. It is equally applicable for average people in areas of everyday life- adult education, lifelong learning, and mental training, too. Costandi’s book is decidedly good background material for Anders Hansen’s practical book ‘The Real Happy Pill: Power Up Your Brain by Moving Your Body’ (Németh, 2020).

Abstract:
Seán O'Faoláin (1900–1991) is most remembered for his short stories, historical biographies and his role as editor of the popular literary journal The Bell (1940–1954). Because of O'Faoláin's support for various socio-political causes during his time with The Bell, in particular a campaign against literary censorship, he is often depicted as a champion of liberal democracy and a vocal critic of the restrictive nationalism which pervaded Irish political life. This article looks at previously unexamined material from the BBC Written Word Archive in Reading to challenge some received assumptions about O'Faoláin's life and work. Specifically, it will look at O'Faoláin's own criticism of Irish nationalism as best represented by Daniel Corkery's The Hidden Ireland (1924) and reassess his attitude to Irish neutrality during World War Two. In doing so, this essay will seek to complicate the picture of O'Faoláin as an early revisionist historian, and show some of the contradictions in his thought.

Abstract:
With its in-depth knowledge and extensive use of archived and printed material, this book can offer a good learning experience for writers in the same genre: the biography of the Petersburgbased philologist, literary historian, translator, editor, and Professor A. Smirnov (1883–1962) is presented in the context of 20th-c. Russian cultural and literary life. The chapters follow a chronological order and are connected by permeating themes of human and academic relationships: with A. Veselovsky, V. Zhirmunsky, and others. The Shakespearean topic is particularly important in the book: Smirnov personally edited nearly all translations of the Bard’s works appearing in the 1930s–1950s. The biography paints a clear picture of the period and explains why Smirnov never got to write his magnum opus on Shakespeare, despite him having all it took to achieve this, being by nature and training, his philosophy and cultural mentality one of the more consummate ‘Europeans’ among Russian scholars.

Abstract:
A discussion on publishing projects in the correspondence between Jerzy Giedroyc and Aleksander Wat Having read a correspondence between Aleksander Wat and Jerzy Giedroyc from 1959–1967 (approximately 30 letters of each correspondent), the author notes that it concerns mainly professional issues, among others, Wat’s working in the post of the editor in Milan’s publishing house of Umberto Silva, who planned (the plans being carried out or not) to publish translations of books of Polish authors (among others, Noce i dnie by Maria Dąbrowska, Bolesław Chrobry by Gołubiew, Srebrne orły by Parnicki, Rodzinna Europa by Miłosz, Skrzydła ołtarza by Herling-Grudziński). An important topic – especially for Giedroyc – raised in these letters, is the picture of communism in the West, frequently wrongly interpreted there, and from the angle of this subject-matter Giedroyc organizes publishing plans in Literary Institute in Paris, among others he supports Wat in writing a book on a true facet of communist Russia – a collection Świat na haku i pod kluczem and Mój wiek [My Century], which were, however, to be published only after Wat’s death.

Abstract:
In 1965, when Dædalus published two issues on “The Negro American,” civil rights in the United States had experienced a series of triumphs and setbacks. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 extended basic citizenship rights to African Americans, and there was hope for further positive change. Yet 1965 also saw violent confrontations in Selma, Alabama, and the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles that were fueled by racial tensions. Against this backdrop of progress and retreat, the contributors to the Dædalus volumes of the mid-1960s considered how socioeconomic factors affected the prosperity, well-being, and social standing of African Americans. Guest editor Lawrence D. Bobo suggests that today we inhabit a similarly unsettled place: situated somewhere between the overt discrimination of Jim Crow and the aspiration of full racial equality. In his introduction, Bobo paints a broad picture of the racial terrain in America today before turning the volume over to the contributors, who take up particular questions ranging from education and family support, to racial identity and politics, to employment and immigration.

Abstract:
Abstract We find that bond issues have substantially increased since the onset of the COVID-19 crisis in calendar week 12 (March 16–20) for bonds rated A or higher, but surprisingly also for bonds rated BBB or lower. In contrast to existing evidence on bond maturities in economic downturns, we document that maturities exceed those of bonds issued before by the same firms as well as the average maturities during normal times. Determinants of corporate bond spreads substantially differ between COVID-19 and normal times. Most prominently, asset tangibility has a highly significant negative effect on spreads during normal times. During COVID-19, this is reversed, especially in industries heavily affected by lockdown measures, reflecting the inflexibility associated with fixed assets. A different picture emerges for equity issues, which slowed considerably during the first 4 weeks of the pandemic, before accelerating again. Capital raised during COVID-19 via equity issues is approximately 5% of capital raised via bond issues. (JEL G01, G32) Received: May 21, 2020; editorial decision June 17, 2020 by Editor Andrew Ellul.

Abstract:
The term data journalism appeared in 2005, however, a single definition of the term "data journalism" has not yet appeared in the scientific community, researchers give different interpretations. This is largely due to the fact that there are discrepancies in understanding the essence of the phenomenon: whether it is a new direction of journalism development or a new genre, format of providing information. As part of the preparation of this article, E.A. Baranova conducted expert interviews with Konstantin Poleskov, the editor of SAĬta novayagazeta.ru , Roman Anin, editor of the investigation department of "Novoi Gazeta", Tina Berezhnaya, Advisor to the General Director for Information Technology of the TV channel "Russia Today", Alexey Smagin, a graduate of the Department of Data Journalism of the Higher School of Economics, an active specialist working at Novaya Gazeta. The experts were asked questions concerning the prerequisites for the emergence of data journalism, the forms of providing materials in data journalism, the development of new competencies among media workers, ethical problems that may be associated with the development of data journalism. The subject of the research is data journalism as a new direction of journalism development. The object of research is the forms of submission of materials in data journalism. The authors studied the data materials published on the websites of Russian and foreign media on the Yandex platform. The article highlights five forms of content submission in data journalism: analytical article; picture; flashcards; longrid; interactive multimedia project. The authors of the article come to the conclusion that data journalism today gives a new development to traditional journalistic genres - analytical article, investigation, news genres. The development of data journalism is associated with the emergence of ethical issues. To date, there are practically no specialists in data journalism in Russia, in order to develop this direction, it is necessary to reform educational programs in journalism.

Abstract:
This article presents a critical analysis of the discursive practices in the public debate on Sámi language in Tromsø. The conflict around the political plan of Tromsø municipality to join the administrative area for the Sámi language lasted for about one year and was largely carried out in the local newspapers, which had established themselves as an arena and broker in the conflict. The focus of this study is, on the one hand, on the role of the media in the debate and, on the other hand, on the socially constructed relations between Sámi and Norwegian language and social meanings, which get expressed in a highly ideological picture of language and local identity and form the ground for the language conflict. The analytic strategy is twofold: as a first step, the study focuses on the reproduction of language ideologies in letters to the editor and readers’ contributions to the local papers’ discussion pages. The identification of the three semiotic processes of iconization (rhematization), fractal recursivity, and erasure reveals how the writers’ expressions of opinion are anchored in a language ideology that connects Sámi language with certain social values and ignores a larger linguistic and cultural diversity in the town of Tromsø. As a second step, the analysis explores the journalistic treatment of the multitude of conflicting voices in the debate and critically sheds light on the construction of a journalistic voice. Although the journalists claim to construe a seemingly neutral ground for their reports (or independent comments), the analysis shows that journalists use the representation of various voices in their texts to construe a positioned, evaluating, and ideologically anchored journalistic voice. In face of the highly ideological character of the language debate in Tromsø, I argue that local journalism has failed in countering the ideological picture of language and society through information and independent journalism.

Abstract:
Three years after the start of the Great Depression, and shortly after A Franklin Roosevelt assumed the presidency, Terry Ramsaye, editor of the motion picture industry's major trade journal, wrote an editorial entitled “New Deal, Superman and Today.” No doubt many readers thought the world had turned upside down. For years civic reformers had attacked the movies for incarnating the dangers of city life: consumption, class mixing, and a sexual revolution. Now Ramsaye assumed the critic's stance, seeing hard times as divine retribution for the industry's folly. Atop the editorial pulpit, he condemned the Hollywood producers as equal to the monopolists whose speculation and grandiose illusions brought about the stock market crash in 1929. Even more dangerous, film producers spread lavish ideals through the powerful medium of sound films, which were displayed in sumptuous theatres that corrupted public life. After three years of bankruptcies and theatre closings, Ramsaye saw a New Deal pointing the way toward business and cultural reform. Like an old-fashioned revivalist, he then exhorted Hollywood to shed the foreignstyled theatre and create models more in touch with national traditions, “more a part of the town and less something that was imposed by outside Supermen.”
