Abstract:
The volume publishes some essays illustrating experiences which attempted to promote reading with very young children in nurseries and infant schools, as part of a project on the picture books by Eric Carle, a well-known American illustrator of children's books. In particular, this initiative took place during the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 school years, in a large number of nurseries and infant schools in some areas of Tuscany (Pistoia, Firenze, Grosseto, Livorno, Lucca, Viareggio, and the Empolese area). The main aim of the project, carried out as action-research, was to present the books of Eric Carle and investigate the level of understanding of the stories proposed by the famous illustrator. The specific goal of the project was to introduce teachers, educators, librarians and parents to the picture books written and illustrated by Eric Carle and translated into Italian.

Kvanvig, Jonathan L. Lessons from Gettier. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198724551.003.0009.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter argues that the literature surrounding the Gettier Problem arises from a kind of methodological false consciousness in the epistemology of the middle part of the twentieth century. The underlying methodology is contrasted with two paradigms within the history of epistemology: one prompted by the conversational context of scrapes with the skeptic and the other on the scientific project of trying to understand the universe and our place in it. These competing paradigms call for two quite different epistemological projects and we can separate the two projects in a way that sees them as complementary, unlike the picture that emerges from within the presuppositions of the Gettier literature. The resulting picture does not make the Gettier Problem go away, but implies a weaker claim, that it should not now be and never should have been a primary focus of epistemology.

Abstract:
This chapter looks at image by focusing on the depiction of photojournalists and television journalists. Critiques of the press often warn of the dangers of manufactured image and spin, as with political events that are orchestrated for the camera. Still, others have pointed to the power of visual images to evoke empathy and emotion and appeal to the imagination, whereas many professionals and educators argue that photojournalism and TV journalism at their best serve journalism's self-proclaimed devotion to truth and social responsibility. Popular culture dramatizes both perspectives on those journalistic professions: they can either help present a picture of the world as it really is, or they can promote lies and fluff over reality and substance.

Knoors, Harry, Maria Brons, and Marc Marschark, eds. Deaf Education Beyond the Western World. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190880514.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This volume disseminates academically informed knowledge about deaf education constructed by scholars and practitioners in countries in Central and Eastern Europe, Africa, Asia, and Latin America in order to identify the strengths and needs of deaf learners and deaf educators in those countries and to help move deaf education forward. It includes chapters about best practices and challenges from nineteen countries across the world, countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Central and Eastern Europe. The chapters are written by scholars and practitioners who live and work in these countries, sometimes co-authored by colleagues from Western countries. The volume thus offers a picture of deaf education beyond the Western world from the perspective of local scholars associated with educating deaf and hard-of-hearing learners, the people who live it and know it best. The picture that emerges about deaf education in mostly vast countries is one that often reflects considerable regional and local variation. The chapters in this volume are embedded in discourses about international knowledge exchange, international development support, and the ambition to realize Goal 4 of the worldwide Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations: to ensure by 2030 inclusive and equitable education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all, including deaf and hard-of-hearing children and adults.

Abstract:
This chapter considers the fear of shortage or scarcity. The Stalinist period was a time of scarcity in Eastern Europe. Shortages of even basic goods were common; accordingly, the West defined Communist regimes as places of extreme deprivation. But when confronted with the spectacle of scarce goods, refugees were anything but powerless. Asked about the material situation at home, they emphasized their cleverness, guile, and ability to work the system in order to acquire whatever they needed. Many told stories of buying and selling on the black market or even denouncing others to improve their daily existence. But although many refugees emphasized how they defied the system, broke the law, and even bribed the police, these tales did not prompt Western analysts to revise their picture of Eastern Europe’s Communist regimes as totalitarian dystopias where the population was held powerless under the shadow of paralyzing fear.

Full text
Abstract:
The epidemic of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the twentieth century prompted many population-based surveys. Now, a huge number of epidemiological studies provide a clear picture of the risk for CVD. Approximately 80% of CVD can be explained by smoking, high blood pressure, and deterioration of lipid and glucose metabolism, the two latter mediated through an unhealthy diet (high intake of salt, saturated fat, and refined sugar) and physical inactivity. A causal web for CVD shows that the influence is seen throughout the life course, and that ‘upstream‘ factors like socioeconomic status, health policies, and industrial influences all have a powerful impact on the more downstream parameters like lifestyle and biomarkers. This emphasizes that population-level interventions represent the most effective options for future strategies for the prevention of CVD.

Perugi, Giulio, Giulia Vannucchi, and Lorenzo Mazzarini. The treatment of cyclothymia. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198748625.003.0010.

Full text
Abstract:
The treatment of cyclothymia is problematic due to its rather complex clinical picture (early onset, lack of clear-cut episodes, high co-morbidity), a challenging patient–doctor relationship and a high sensitivity to medications. This chapter summarizes available evidence on pharmacological treatment, psychoeducation, and psychotherapy for cyclothymic patients. The management of cyclothymia should rely on integrated strategies. The psychopharmacological treatment has to follow the principle of ‘go slow and stay low’. Mood stabilizers should be the first option and antidepressants and antipsychotics should be used cautiously and for short periods of time to manage depressive, anxious, or hypomanic symptoms. Psychoeducation should be started from the beginning and is aimed to promote a better knowledge of the disorder and its effects on daily life as well as adherence to medications. The inclusion of individual psychotherapeutic treatments (eg, cognitive behavioural treatment) should also be considered.

Alexandrowicz, C. H. Is India a Federation? (1954). Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780198766070.003.0018.

Abstract:
Rigid definitions of law and the impossibility of fitting reality into these definitions have prompted lawyers to multiply so-called quasi-institutions. For example, the controversy over delegation of legislative power has led constitutional lawyers to speak about quasi-legislative power, which is power transferred by the legislature to the executive in spite of the principle of separation of powers. Some constitutional lawyers and political scientists have also adopted a rigid definition of the federal principle. Since many federations do not correspond in theory or practice to this definition, the institution of quasi-federation, which is midway between a real Federation and a unitary State, was introduced into the picture. The questions then arise whether the term quasi-federation can serve any practical or academic purpose, and if so, what is the real meaning of quasi-federation? This chapter addresses this question with particular reference to the Federation of India.

Philpott, Daniel. Religious Freedom in Islam. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190908188.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Is Islam hospitable to religious freedom? The question is at the heart of a public controversy over Islam that has raged in the West over the past decade-and-a-half. Religious freedom is important because it promotes democracy and peace and reduces ills like civil war, terrorism, and violence. Religious freedom also is simply a matter of justice—not an exclusively Western principle but rather a universal human right rooted in human nature. The heart of the book confronts the question of Islam and religious freedom through an empirical examination of Muslim-majority countries. From a satellite view, looking at these countries in the aggregate, the book finds that the Muslim world is far less free than the rest of the world. Zooming in more closely on Muslim-majority countries, though, the picture looks more diverse. Some one-fourth of Muslim-majority countries are in fact religiously free. Among the unfree, 40% are repressive because they are governed by a hostile secularism imported from the West, and the other 60% are Islamist. The emergent picture is both honest and hopeful. Amplifying hope are two chapters that identify “seeds of freedom” in the Islamic tradition and that present the Catholic Church’s long road to religious freedom as a promising model for Islam. Another chapter looks at the Arab Uprisings of 2011, arguing that religious freedom explains much about both their broad failure and their isolated success. The book closes with lessons for expanding religious freedom in the Muslim world and the world at large.

Shaver, Lea. Ending Book Hunger. Yale University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.12987/yale/9780300226003.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Worldwide, billions of people suffer from book hunger. For them, books are too few, too expensive, or do not even exist in their languages. This book argues that this is an educational crisis: the most reliable predictor of children's achievement is the size of their families' book collections. This book highlights innovative nonprofit solutions to expand access to print. First Book, for example, offers diverse books to teachers at bargain prices. Imagination Library mails picture books to support early literacy in book deserts. Worldreader promotes mobile reading in developing countries by turning phones into digital libraries. Pratham Books creates open access stories that anyone may freely copy, adapt, and translate. Can such efforts expand to bring books to the next billion would-be readers? The book reveals the powerful roles of copyright law and licensing, and sounds the clarion call for readers to contribute their own talents to the fight against book hunger.

Hobson, R. Peter. Brief Psychoanalytic Therapy. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med:psych/9780198725008.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book outlines the principles and practice of Brief Psychoanalytic Therapy. An introductory chapter distills those aspects of psychoanalysis that provide a basis for the approach. Special attention is given to how a therapist may promote a patient’s development by registering and containing emotional states that the patient is unable to manage alone. This is followed by an overview of themes and variations in six forms of brief psychodynamic therapy. The remainder of the book is concerned less with theory than with clinical practice. Treatment and Adherence Manuals detail the specifics of therapist orientation and technique, and a formal research study comparing the approach with Interpersonal Therapy is reported. Case histories of individual treatments unfolding over time are complemented by detailed examination of short sequences of patient–therapist dialogue from transcribed sessions. What emerges is a picture of a psychoanalytic treatment that, while brief, is disciplined and coherent in its concentrated focus on analyzing the transference and countertransference in the therapeutic relationship.
