Abstract:
The motivation behind this thesis is to consolidate and evaluate the most common Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controller tuning techniques used in industry. These are the tuning techniques used when the plant transfer function is not known. Many of these systems are poorly tuned because such consolidated information is not easily found in one single source such as this thesis. Once one of the tuning methods are applied almost always there will be further fine tuning needed to bring the system into the required design criteria. The purpose here is to find out which tuning technique will yield the lowest percent overshoot and the shortest settling time for all situations. This will give the engineer a good starting point; to minimally further adjust parameters to achieve the desired design criteria. There will also be discussion on the various algorithms used in industry. Four tuning methods will be evaluated based on their ability to control different style plants. The comparison criteria will be percent overshoot and settling time for an applied step input. The tuning methods chosen were the Ziegler-Nichols Open Loop method, the CHR method for 0% overshoot, the Ziegler-Nichols Closed Loop method, and the Rule of Thumb method. It is shown that for a second order plant with a lag and pure integration in its transfer function, the Open Loop method yielded the lowest results in terms of percent overshoot, yet the Closed Loop method had the shortest settling time. For systems of higher order than two it was shown that the CHR method gave the best performance however as the order increased the Closed Loop method gave a shorter settling time. For systems of higher order with varying lags in series the CHR method gave the best results. The Rule of thumb method usually gave similar results to that of the Closed Loop method; however for higher order systems the Rule of Thumb method gave less percent overshoot but with a longer settling time than the Closed Loop method. Since these tuning methods are used when the plant transfer function is not known, and none of the rules were found to give consistently the lowest percent overshoot, and settling time for all plants tested, there can not be a recommendation as to which method an engineer should choose to use. If the plant transfer function is known or can be reasonably modeled then the following recommendations can be followed. When tuning systems with pure integrations in their transfer function the Open Loop or Closed Loop method be used. When tuning systems of order higher than two the CHR or Closed Loop method should be used, however with high order systems with varying lags the CHR method should be used. It is the responsibility of the engineer to know how and when to implement each of the tuning rules properly.

Abstract:
The building automation industry lacks an affordable, simple, solution for autonomous PID controller tuning when overhead variables fluctuate. In this project, requested by Jitea AB, a solution was developed, utilising step response process modelling, numerical integration of first order differential equations, and Ant Colony Optimization (ACO). The solution was applied to two control schemes; simulated outlet flow from a virtual water tank, and the physical air pressure in the ventilation system of a preschool in Sweden. An open-loop step response provided the transfer function in each case, which, after some manipulation, could be employed to predict the performance of any given set of PID parameters, based on a weighted cost function. This prediction model was used in ACO to find optimal settings. The program was constructed in both Structured Control Language and Structured Text and documented in an approachable way. The results showed that the program was, in both cases, able to eliminate overshoot and retain the settling time (with a slightly raised rise time) achieved with settings tuned per the current methods of Jitea AB. Noise and oscillations present in the physical system did not appear to have any major negative influence on the tuning process. The program performed above Jitea AB’s expectation, and will be tested in more scenarios, as it showed promise. Autonomous implementation could be of societal benefit through increased efficiency and sustainability in a range of processes. In future studies, focus should be on improving the prediction model, and further optimising the ACO variables.
Byggnadsautomationsbranschen saknar en kostnadseffektiv lösning för att autonomt trimma in PID-regulatorer när överordnade variabler fluktuerar. I detta (av Jitea AB beställda) arbete, utvecklades en lösning baserad på stegsvarsmodellering, numerisk integration av första gradens ordinära differentialekvationer och myrkolonisoptimering (ACO). Lösningen applicerades i två regleringsfall; en simulerad utloppsventil från en virtuell vattentank, och det fysiska lufttrycket i ventilationssystemet på en förskola i Sverige. Ett stegsvar med öppen slinga gav en överföringsfunktion i respektive fall, som efter viss manipulering kunde nyttjas för att förutspå prestandan för en uppsättning PID-parametrar baserat på en samlad, viktad kostnadsfunktion. Predikteringsmodellen implementerades i ACO för att finna optimala parametrar. Programmet konstruerades i Structured Control Language och Structured Text, och dokumenterades på ett pedagogiskt sätt. Resultaten visade att programmet (i båda fallen) klarade att eliminera översläng med bibehållen stabiliseringstid (och något förskjuten stigningstid) jämfört med Jitea AB:s existerande trimningsmetod. Signalbrus och oscillationer i det fysiska systemet verkade inte ha någon avsevärd negativ inverkan på trimningsprocessen. Programmet presterade över Jitea AB:s förväntan, och kommer (med tanke på de lovande resultaten) fortsatt att testas i fler scenarion. Implementation av en autonom version skulle kunna innebära flera samhälleliga förmåner i form av ökad verkningsgrad och hållbarhet i en rad processer. I framtida studier bör fokus läggas på att ytterligare förbättra prediktionsmodellen, samt att vidare utforska de optimala myrkolonisvariablerna.

Abstract:
Wind turbine modelling using doubly-fed induction generators is a well-known subject. However, studies have tended to focus on optimising the components of the system rather than considering the interaction between the components. This research examines the interaction of the control methods for a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) in a wind turbine application integrating them with the crowbar protection control and DC-link brake control to make the best use of the converter. The controls of the rotor-side and the grid-side converters of the DFIG model are both well established and have been shown to work. Typically the crowbar protection is designed in order to protect the rotor-side converter and the power electronic components of the DFIG system from high currents occurring in the rotor due to the faults. The DC-link brake-overvoltage protection is also designed to prevent the overcharging of the DC-link capacitor placed between the rotor-side converter and the grid-side converter. In order to show that these protection schemes work and with thought can co-ordinate with each other, tests consisting of a number of balanced three-, two- and one-phase voltage sags are applied to the network voltage. The main contributions of this thesis are establishing operational tuning and design limits for the controllers and system subassemblies. This is to minimise the electrical subsystem interaction while maintaining adequate performance, and have an improved DC-link control. This work also includes a full electrical system study of the wind turbine and an essential literature review on significant references in the field of the DFIG wind turbine system modelling, control and protection. Specifically this research project makes a number of novel contributions to the literature: enhanced DC voltage control including operating point sensitivity analysis and dynamic stiffness assessment, sensitivity and robustness analyses of the power loop control and control loop segmentation by appropriately tuning the controller loops.

Auto-tuning has become an important function in distributed control systems (DCS) and is especially appreciated in large industries that can have hundreds of controllers. In the DCS 800xA manufactured by ABB, there is an auto-tuning method implemented based on a relay experiment to determine the ultimate gain and the ultimate period, with which the PID parameters are obtained using the modified Ziegler-Nichols tuning rules. The tuning procedure can then proceed with a step identification experiment to get additional parameters for kappa-tau tuning. In the previous DCS, called Advant, there was another auto-tuning approach implemented. This method was based on dominant pole design, which included an identification of the process. The purpose of this thesis is to compare these auto-tuning methods, to investigate if the dominant pole placement method should be migrated to the 800xA system.


Automatisk trimning har blivit en viktig funktion i distribuerade styrsystem (DCS och är speciellt av intresse för stora industrier som kan ha flera hundra regulatorer. Den automatiska trimningen som idag är implementerad i ABB:s DCS 800xA är baserad på ett reläexperiment för att bestämma den ultimata förstärkningen och den ultimata periodtiden. Modifierade Ziegler-Nichols trimningsregler används sedan för att bestämma PID parametrarna. Vidare kan trimningen fortsätta med ett stegsvars-experiment för att erhålla ytterliggare parametrar och trimma med kappa-tau metoden. Den automatiska trimningsmetoden som var implementerad i tidigare DCS, Advant, var baserad på dominant polplacering med identifiering av processen. Syftet med detta examensarbete är att jämföra dessa automatiska trimningsmetoder för att undersöka om den tidigare trimningsmetoden baserad på dominant polplacering ska implementeras i 800xA systemet.

Abstract:
Maintaining the pH of a fluid or a solution at a specific value is a concern in many industrial processes, wastewater management, and food and pharmaceutical production. Given the importance of controlling pH in many processes, the objective of this thesis is to study and compare the effectiveness of some controller algorithms to control the pH of a process. In this study, the performance of three controller algorithms, namely PID, fractional PID and LA controllers, is evaluated for the control of a simple neutralization process using conventional controller performance metrics. Performance metrics used are the response time, the Integral of the Time weighted Absolute Error (ITAE), the Integral of the Squared Error (ISE), and the Integral of the Squares of the changes (ΔU) in the manipulated variable (ISDU). The three controllers were therefore tuned to minimize one or a combination of the controller performance metrics. Results show that PID, fractional PID and LA controllers implemented and tested in this research are all worthy controllers for maintaining pH of the neutralization process. Simulation results show that the three controllers can be used with confidence to cope with the high nonlinearity of a pH neutralization process provided that the process is properly designed. The relative small gain in performance obtained with the fractional PID controller, compared to a linear PID controller, suggests that it is not worth resorting to a fractional PID controller given its complexity and higher computation effort. Results show that PID and LA controllers are easy to implement with short response time and low ITAE and ISDU performance metrics.

In Scania’s single speed engines for industrial and marine use, the engine speed is controlled by a PI-controller. This controller is tuned independent of engine type and application. This brings certain disadvantages since the engines are used in a wide range of applications where the dynamics may differ. In this thesis, the possibility to tune the controller automatically for a specific engine installation has been investigated. The work shows that automatic tuning is possible. By performing an identification experiment on the engine, the parameters in a first order model describing the dynamics of the engine and the load aggregate are determined. The control parameters are then determined as functions of the model parameters. Measurements on a generator set show that the proposed method provides a controller which is able to follow changes in the reference value, and to compensate for load disturbances.
I Scania’s envarvsmotorer för industri- och marin-bruk regleras varvtalet av en PI-regulator. Denna regulator är inställd oberoende av motortyp och applikation. Detta medför vissa nackdelar då motorerna används i flera olika typer av applikationer där dynamiken kan variera. I detta arbete har det undersökts huruvida det är möjligt att automatiskt ställa in parametrarna i en PID-regulator för en enskild motorinstallation. Arbetet visar att automatisk inställning är möjlig. Genom att göra ett identifieringsexperiment på motorn bestäms parametrarna i en första ordningens modell som beskriver dynamiken för den aktuella konfigurationen av motor och belastande aggregat. Därefter bestäms regulatorparametrarna som funktion av modellparametrarna. Mätningar på ett generatoraggregat visar att man med hjälp av den föreslagna metoden erhåller en inställning av regulatorn som både klarar av att följa börvärdesförändringar och kompensera för laststörningar.

Prompted by the desire to increase the industrial applicability range of self-tuning control, the objective of this work has been to extend the standard linear self-tuning framework to facilitate the design of self-tuning controllers for bilinear systems. Bilinear systems form a well structured class of non-linear systems within which linear systems coexist as a special subclass. They are, therefore, appropriate for modelling a wider range of processes and plant than the restrictive, yet convenient, linear model structures since such models are valid both within the linear subregion and beyond. In addition to extending the self-tuning framework for bilinear systems another significant contribution of the Thesis is the introduction of a cautious least squares estimation procedure which also enhances the existing linear self-tuning schemes.

Abstract:
The use of self tuning control to aid the commissioning and to improve the performance of environmental heating controls is investigated. The theory of self tuning control is well developed, this study considers its application to air conditioning plant, and in particular the measures necessary to devise a controller that is sufficiently robust to be competitive with conventional controllers. Nonlinearities peculiar to air conditioning plant are considered in detail and the effect on the self tuning control is investigated. The commissioning of heating controls can be simplified by using self tuning control, as its predictive nature compensates for the large phase lag present in most heating plant. Commissioning of controls is described in detail, and a novel commissioning procedure is presented for use with self tuning control. An important feature of heating plant is the air mixing process. A test facility that exhibits the major characterics of a practical air mixing process, such as an occupied air space (room) is constructed and its thermal characteristics modelled. Modelling of practical heating plant is described and techniques based on crosscorrelation and least squares methods are presented as a means of obtaining optimal estimates of the model parameters. The results of parameter identification of the test facility highlight several of the problems of applying self tuning control in practice, and in particular to heating plant. The self tuning control presented is shown to have a less sensitive commissioning procedure and better, long term performance than conventional PI control both in simulation and in real time control of the test facility.

This master’s thesis concerns development of embedded control systems.Development process for embedded control systems involves several steps, such as control design, rapid prototyping, fixedpoint implementation and hardware-in-the-loop-simulations. Another step, which Volvo is not currently (September 2009) using within climate control is on-line tuning. One reason for not using this technique today is that the available tools for this task (ATI Vision, INCA from ETAS or CalDesk from dSPACE) do not handle parameter dependencies in a atisfactory way. With these constraints of today, it is not possible to use online tuning and controller development process is more laborious and time consuming.The main task of this thesis is to solve the problem with parameter dependencies and to make online tuning possible.

Abstract:
An off-line method of tuning PID controllers used in process control applications is presented. The plant under consideration is of second order with delay and the loop is presumed to be operating at steady state under the influence of random disturbances. Tuning is performed by minimizing the cost function, namely the integral of squared error, with respect to the tuning parameters. To do this, a second order approximation of the cost function is obtained and minimized using the Newton-Raphson method. System identification is done without interrupting production by introducing test signals of low signal to noise ratio and using a Kalman filter to extract the response. The result is a model composed of Laguerre functions which emulates the frequency response of the system in question. The integral term is found to cause stability problems if left unconstrained because the lag it introduces is not beneficial in the case under consideration. On the other hand, the algorithm behaves well when tuning a PD controller if the Kalman filter yields accurate results because the model obtained is then very similar to the transfer function of interest. The Kalman filter presently used does not adequately model the noise, so its performance hampers proper tuning of the loop.

Abstract:
The benefits of good loop tuning in the process industries have long been recognized. Ensuring that controllers are kept well-configured despite changes in process dynamics can bring energy and material savings, improved product quality as well as reduced downtime. A number of loop tuning packages therefore exist that can, on demand, check the state of a loop and adjust the controller as necessary. These methods generally apply some form of upset to the process to identify the current plant dynamics, against which the controller can then be evaluated. A simple approach to the automatic tuning of PI controllers injects variable frequency sinewaves into the loop under normal plant operation. The method employs a phase-locked loop-based device called a phase-frequency/estimation and uses 'design-point' rules, where the aim is for the Nyquist locus of the loop to pass through a particular point on the complex plane. A number of advantages are offered by the scheme: it can carry out both 'one shot' tuning and continuous adaptation, the latter even with the test signal set to a lower amplitude than that of noise. A published article is included here that extends the approach to PID controllers, with simulations studies and real-life test showing the method to work consistently well for a for a wide range of typical process dynamics, the closed-loop having a response that compares well with that produced by standard tuning rules. The associated signal processing tools are tested by applying them to the transmitter of a Coriolis mass-flow meter. Schemes are devised for the tracking and control of the second mode of measurementtube oscillation alongside the so-called 'driven mode', at which the tubes are usually vibrated, leading to useful information being made available for measurement correction purposes. Once a loop has been tuned, it is important to assess it periodically and to detect any performance losses resulting from events such as changes in process or disturbance dynamics and equipment malfunction such as faulty sensors and actuators. Motivated by the effective behaviour of the controller tuners, a loop monitor developed here, also using probing sinewaves coupled with 'design-point' ideas. In this application, the effect on the process must be minimal, so the device must work with lower still SNRs. Thus it is practical to use a fixed-frequency probing signal, together with a different tool set for tracking it. An extensive mathematical framework is developed describing the statistical properties of the signal parameter estimates, and those of the indices derived from these estimates indicating the state of the loop. The result is specific practical guidelines for the application of the monitor (e.g. for the choices of test signal amplitude and test duration). Loop monitoring itself has traditionally been carried out by passive methods that calculate various performance indicators from routine operating data. Playing a central role amongst these metrics is the Harris Index (HI) and its variants, which compare the output variance to a 'minimum achievable' figure. A key advantage of the active monitor proposed here is that it is able not only to detect suboptimal control but also to suggest how the controller should be adjusted. Moreover, the monitor’s index provides a strong indication of changes in damping factor. Through simple adjustments to the algorithm (by raising the amplitude of the test signal or adding high frequency dither to the control signal), the method can be applied even in the presence of actuator non-linearity, allowing it to identify the cause of performance losses. This is confirmed by real-life trials on a non-linear flow rig.

Abstract:

In some turbochargers, boost pressure is reduced by opening the wastegate valve. In a modern turbo charged car, the most common way for opening the wastegate is with a pneumatic actuator and an air control solenoid, controlled by the ECU. In the control systems studied the ECU utilizes a static feedforward and a PID controller, for the purpose of making the boost pressure follow its reference value. With no systematic method for tuning the controller, this can be time consuming, and a set of well defined experiments to determine PID parameters are desired.When test time in a real engine is limited or expensive, it is advantageousto work in a simulation environment before doing live tests. A model for thewastegate actuator and air control solenoid is developed in the thesis. This is used to simulate controller performance before any tests in a real car is performed.In the thesis a tuning method for the PID controller based on step responsesis proposed. The tuning method evaluated is the IMC-choice of controller fora second order system, and it has a single design parameter not given by theexperiments. The controller is shown to give desired behavior when the staticfeedforward is correct or has small error.

Abstract:
This thesis documents the work that has been done towards the development of a 'practical' self-tuning controller for turbine generator plant. It has been shown by simulation studies and practical investigations using a micro-alternator system that a significant enhancement in the overall performance in terms of control and stability can be achieved by improving the primary controls of a turbine generator using self-tuning control. The self-tuning AVR is based on the Generalised Predictive Control strategy. The design of the controller has been done using standard off-the-shelf microprocessor hardware and structured software design techniques. The proposed design is thus flexible, cost-effective, and readily applicable to 'real' generating plant. Several practical issues have been tackled during the design of the self-tuning controller and techniques to improve the robustness of the measurement system, controller, and parameter estimator have been proposed and evaluated. A simple and robust measurement system for plant variables based on software techniques has been developed and its suitability for use in the self-tuning controller has been practically verified. The convergence, adaptability, and robustness aspects of the parameter estimator have been evaluated and shown to be suitable for long-term operation in 'real' self-tuning controllers. The self-tuning AVR has been extensively evaluated under normal and fault conditions of the turbine generator. It has been shown that this new controller is superior in performance when compared with a conventional lag-lead type of fixed-parameter digital AVR. The use of electrical power as a supplementary feedback signal in the new AVR is shown to further improve the dynamic stability of the system. The self-tuning AVR has been extended to a multivariable integrated self-tuning controller which combines the AVR and EHG functions. The flexibility of the new AVR to enable its expansion for more complex control applications has thus been demonstrated. Simple techniques to incorporate constraints on control inputs without upsetting the loop decoupling property of the multivariable controller have been proposed and evaluated. It is shown that a further improvement in control performance and stability can be achieved by the integrated controller.
