Abstract:
The erosion of the river bed material at bridge pier foundation produced by scour events is one of the main causes of the observed masonry bridges failures and collapses. Foundation settlements and rotations derived from the reduction of the footprint under the piers threaten masonry arch bridges integrity more than any gravity load. The resulting effect on the structure is the development of cracking mechanisms on the arches which may affect the dynamic behaviour of the whole bridge. A scaled experimental model of a masonry arch bridge has been built in the laboratory of the Dep. of Structural Engineering at the Politecnico di Torino. The aim was to better understand scour damage scenario and to identify early structural symptoms of pier erosion. A preliminary dynamic identification is carried out on the intact structure and a comparison with the FEM results is performed. The set of identified modal parameters is adopted as the reference system that will be compared with those acquired after the application of damage of increasing extent.

Abstract:
The Chengdong Hanjiang Bridge in Ankang City is a multi-span continuous beam-arch combination system bridge of (75+2×125+160+2×125+75) m, and its site is located in the earthquake zone. Calculation model based on Midas / Civil finite element software process analysis method is applied to seismic response analysis using power. At the same time, in order to influence the travelling wave effect and the seismic isolation system on the internal force of the bridge structure, corresponding finite element models were established and calculated with time history analysis. The finite element model under non-uniform excitation uses the “Large Mass Method” (LMM) for analysis and calculation under different wave velocity multi-point excitations. The results show that after considering the traveling wave effect, the displacement and bending moment of the control section of each hole increase, and the internal force of the fixed pier increases. When the wave velocity is 600m/s, the traveling wave effect strengthens the seismic response of the structure the most. With the increase of the wave velocity, the seismic response of the structure gradually approaches the seismic response under uniform excitation. After the friction pendulum seismic isolation support is used, it is fixed. The bending moment of Pier No.32 has been reduced by 80%, the stiffness of the whole bridge is more balanced, the forces of each pier are relatively close, and the isolation effect is good.

Abstract:
This article explores the technological and cultural history of the Roman aqueduct of Aquincum in Budapest. The only one in the Roman province of Pannonia that was elevated to a continuous line of arches, this aqueduct conveyed water from its source in what is now Budapest’s third district to its final destination over three miles to the south, where a Roman military town was located. Apart from the aqueduct’s technological and archaeological aspects, this article also examines several cultural practices that it engendered including the ritualistic significance of the springs that fed it, its appearance as a ruin in various medieval documents, the transformation of its last, above-ground pier into a Christian shrine in the nineteenth century, as well as the relocation of two of its piers to give way to the construction of a road junction.

Abstract:
Many important qualities must be considered for the proper aesthetic design of bridges to develop harmony with their environment. Methodologies for segmental bridge design that create bridges that preserve the existing landscapes and complement, and even enhance, their settings are examined. Bridges considered have received 123 design awards in the past 21 years, including 3 Presidential Awards through the National Endowment for the Arts. Proper scale and proportions of various bridge members to create balanced and slender appearances are quantified, including proper span-to-depth and pier width-to-height ratios for graceful structures. The design methodology for aesthetics includes a quantitative and qualitative sorting of natural site features to determine appropriate shapes for the superstructure and substructure. Criteria for selecting and evaluating the visual effects of shape, shadows, vistas, color, textures, and the use of native materials are addressed. Quantification of the cost of aesthetic decisions and determination of aesthetic value are addressed for different elements of these bridges. Case studies are used to quantify aesthetic features for such bridges as the Natchez Trace Parkway Arches [first precast concrete arches with 177-m (582-ft) main arch span], Tennessee; Sunshine Skyway Bridge, Florida; Linn Cove Viaduct, North Carolina; Hanging Lake Viaduct, Colorado; and Wabasha Street Bridge, Minnesota.

Abstract:
AbstractSettlements severely affect historic masonry arch bridges worldwide. There are countless examples of structural dislocations and ruins in recent years due to severe settlements at the base of pier foundations, often caused by shipworm infestation of wooden foundations or scouring and riverbed erosion phenomena. The present paper proposes an original way to approach the failure analysis of settled masonry arch bridges. The proposed method combines two different 2D numerical models for the prediction of masonry arch bridge capacity against settlements and for safety assessment. The first one is the Piecewise Rigid Displacement method, i.e. a block-based limit analysis approach using the well known Heyman's hypotheses; the second one is a continuous Finite Element approach. The case study of the four-span Deba Bridge (Spain, 2018) failure is presented with the aim to illustrate how the methods work. The failure analysis produced satisfactory results by applying both methods separately, in confirmation of their reliability. Their combination also allowed to obtain a significantly reduction in computational cost and an improvement of prediction accuracy. A sensitivity and a path-following analysis were also performed with the aim to demonstrate the robustness of the presented method. The obtained simulations highlighted that the results do not depend on the friction angle and that a proper prediction of the evolution of the structural behavior can be obtained only taking into account geometric nonlinearities. Such results demonstrate once again that in settled masonry arches geometry prevails over the mechanical parameters. The current study paves the way for the fruitful use of the proposed approaches for a wider range of applications, as, for example, the mechanism identification or the displacement capacity assessment of masonry structures under overloading as seismic loads.

Abstract:
This paper presents an evaluation study of the performance of reinforced concrete arch bridge structures under earthquake load. The study is aimed to investigate the seismic performance of Wreksodiningrat Bridge, located in the province of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. This bridge is a three spans reinforced concrete arch bridge with a main span length of 75 m and two side spans with a length of 35 m, respectively. This study is a part of a large project carried out by the Ministry of Public Works to study the impact of the new 2016 Indonesia Seismic Design Code for Bridges (SNI 2833:2016). The main objective of this paper is to determine the displacement demands due to earthquake load based on the new seismic code design for bridges, SNI 2833:2016. In addition, demand capacity ratios (D/C) of the main structural components, such as the compression arch and main column (pier) at the fixed support, are also reviewed in this paper. The analysis was carried out using nonlinear modal pushover analysis. The arch bridge modeling is three dimensional, where structural elements such as beams, columns, and compression arches are modeled as frame elements. The plastic hinges are modeled as fiber hinges with unconfined and confined concrete material stress-strain relationship following Mander formula. The analysis result shows that the displacement demands of the bridge are 2.9 cm and 20 cm in the longitudinal and transverse direction, respectively. The D/C ratios of the compression arch due to demand earthquake load are 0.74 and 0.95 in the longitudinal and transverse direction of the bridge, while the D/C ratios of the pier are 0.15 and 0.80 in the longitudinal and transverse direction. Based on the above results, it is concluded that the studied bridge is able to withstand the seismic load requirements in the new Indonesia Seismic Design Code.

Abstract:
It is sometimes easily assumed that an experimental measurement will closely mimic the results from an associated theoretical model. The purpose of this project is to determine how close to a theoretical model - involving the component buildup method and the quadratic drag polar assumption - a Piper Archer II will perform in an actual test flight. During the test flight, the Archer II showed a similar correlation between air speed and performance as the model. The actual performance numbers were, however, consistently lower than their theoretical counterpart.

Abstract:
The aim of this work was to examine the foot-ankle injury prevention in adolescent athletes through three approaches: the running-related foot-ankle injury risk factors, the epidemiology of foot-ankle injuries and the implementation of prevention strategies. The approach dealing with the running-related foot-ankle injury risk factors aimed to determine (i) how running-induced fatigue may affect the force and the fatigability of the ankle plantar and dorsal flexor muscles, the foot plantar pressure distribution, the running mechanics and the medial arch stiffness, (ii) how the shoe wear (spikes or running shoes) may affect the plantar load distribution while sprinting and (iii) how running velocity may alter the plantar load distribution. The approach related to epidemiology of foot-ankle injuries aimed at collecting and analysing, over three seasons, the foot-ankle injuries sustained by highly-trained adolescent athletes and their potential relations with the maturity status of these athletes. The approach presenting some prevention strategies implementations aimed firstly to design and validate a convenient and reliable flexibility measurement method. The second purpose of this approach was to assess on the field the effects of a neuromuscular electromyostimulation strengthening protocol on the foot medial arch stiffness and the effects of a combined foot-ankle strengthening training on the foot plantar pressure distribution and the performance while sprinting

Abstract:
My Ph.D thesis is focused on Papal prospects of a Catholic re-conquest, according to the model of the medieval Christianity; that is to say, the papal attempt to place the Roman Church at the heart of society once again, or, in other words, the efforts to restore mutatis mutandi a Christian system, as it was in Europe before the French Revolution. In fact, following the First World War, the situation in Germany offered great possibilities to this kind of Roman policy. We may think about the German needs to get help from the Holy See on the international scene, or the new political order, i.e the Weimar Constitution favorable to Catholic interests and the power gained by political Catholicism. To develop this policy, the Holy See had different means: the ecclesial means, such as bishop's appointments, ecclesiastical formation, theological studies, which were used to romanizzare the german Catholicism and to reinforce roman control over the German Church; second, the means of the Catholic activism, such as religious instruction and education, Catholic lay organizations and Christian political parties. However, the best instrument was certainly the Concordat; and from that point of view, the diplomatic activity was certainly increased by the Nuncio appointed for the first time in Berlin. My thesis ends with the summer of 1934, after the Night of the Long Knives and president Hindenburg's death. Indeed, these two episodes finished the formation of the Nazi Totalitarianism, but they revealed also how vain the Papal policy was. It can be viewed as the beginning of the disillusions in Rome about Hitler and the possibilities of moderating him

Abstract:
How can the new dynamic in European integration politics during the second half of the 1980’s be explained? What were the driving forces behind the Single European Act, the achievement of the Single Market, the Schengen agreement, the EC’s expansion to the south, and the new steps towards Monetary Union and the Common Foreign and Security Policy? In this book, using numerous discoveries from the archives, historians from 12 countries show how the European Community reacted to the challenges of globalisation and the reform initiatives by Mikhail Gorbachev. In doing so, they write a new chapter in the history of European integration: the emergence of the European Union. <p>Because of the nonlinear interaction that exists between the bridge and the track, the conventional algorithm of calculating each longitudinal force separately and adding them up could cause certain error.</p><p>In this paper, the iterative formula of longitudinal resistance considering the loading history and loading order was derived, and one particular (77+3×156.8+77)m tied arch continuous bridge with four tracks was taken as an example to build an integrated model of large span continuous bridge with tied arch including the concrete-filled steel tube arch, suspender, beam, pier, pile foundation, multiple tracks and the rail expansion devices, and the influence that the loading history would have on the system of tied arch continuous bridge and the track was analyzed.</p><p>The study shows that while calculating the temperature effect, the temperature load should be applied on the rail, beam and arch at the same time. While loading to double tracks in opposite directions, the torque that pier top bears can be over 4000kN•m. When examining the substructure, various kinds of live load conditions should be considered. The result of rail stress acquired through the conventional algorithm will be 7% larger than the actualities while the horizontal force of pier top will be 8~21% larger.</p><p>In many cases, the torque of pier top acquired through the conventional algorithm has a rather large error compared with the actualities, so the loading steps considering the loading history was highly recommended to calculate the force condition of the substructure in this kind of bridge.</p>

Therefore, engineering and research seek innovative solutions to address these problems in the long term.</p><p>One of the main problems presented by the bridges in Chile is that scour produced in the area of the piers. there are several conventional methods of strengthening with the aim of improving their performance against erosion and scour processes. During 2012 a new method of strengthening has been investigated: Tied-arch method, proposing the modification of the static schema through the construction of an network arch.</p><p>Based on this method, this paper provides the study and detailed proposal of constructive specifications of the main joints of its elements, including technical details (Drawing).</p>

Abstract:
Ayala Bridge, in the center of Manilla, is a steel arch bridge built in the 1950s. It is comprised of 2 simply supported steel bridges constructed with 3 trusses connected together. The bridge has to be retrofitted for conformity to new codes (traffic and seismic) and lifted by 70 cm for conformity to regulatory clearance. The retrofitting solution designed by Freyssinet was chosen because of its economy when considering both deck and foundations: it consists of minimizing the current seismic loads on piers and abutments, to get them lower than actual loads seen in the past under historic seismic and typhoon. Longitudinally, the 2 decks are linked together and extended with beams and new piles: the overall structure is working as a frame. Transversally, some seismic devices are placed. The overall steel structure is then strengthened using additional steel profiling and prestressing. Major parts of the work has been done with no traffic interruption at all.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The communication presents the only example of resi- dential prefabrication carried out in Valencia in the 1960s, a block of eight houses located in the Campanar district. For its execution, a modular design was used which involved, among others, the as- sembly of a manufacturing plant on site. In the project carried out by the architects GO.DB. the concept of “Habitable hollow beam” was applied and its materialization using the “Modular Elements” of the heavy prefabrication system “Modul-Arch”, based on reinfor- ced concrete panels. With this method, the intention was to reunite structure and enclosure, although it was not possible. The steps taken from the idea to nal execution was carried out with the pa- tents of several utility and industrial models, necessary for building the houses. In uence of Miguel Fisac underlies García-Ordoñez’s studies on the “habitable beams”. Also, the constructive systems of prefabricated concrete bridge segments will be a reference for the construction of the Campanar complex.
