Abstract:

Abstract:
Thanks largely to the work of Pierre van der Eng we now have quite a good picture of trends in growth of Indonesia's real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) over the twentieth century. There were two periods, each of around three decades when growth was positive in per capita terms. From 1900 to 1930, real GDP grew at 2.7 per cent per annum; if we assume that population grew over this period at around 1.2 per cent per annum, then annual growth in real per capita terms was 1.5 per cent per annum. This implies an increase over a thirty-year period in per capita GDP of around fifty-six per cent. Beginning in 1929, there was a sustained growth collapse which continued through the early 1930s; real per capita GDP in 1934 was only eighty-three per cent of the 1928 level in 1934 (Table 1). Some recovery occurred in the latter part of the 1930s, and by 1941 per capita GDP had returned to roughly the 1928 level. But the twenty-five years from 1941 to 1966 were characterised by foreign occupation, revolutionary struggle, and, after 1949, considerable macroeconomic instability culminating in hyper-inflation in the early and mid-1960s. In 1967, per capita GDP was estimated by Van der Eng to be only about seventy-five per cent of the 1928 figure.

Abstract:
About twelve miles to the south of Newfoundland's Burin Peninsula, there are two small islands, called St. Pierre and Miquelon which have belonged to France for nearly four centuries. In June of 1940 when France succumbed to the onslaught of the Nazis, the territory, like all other French holdings in the New World, fell under the control of the Vichy French government. But on December 24th, 1941, the Islands were seized by a Free French Naval task force acting under the direction of Charles de Gaulle, who had ordered this action not only in direct contradiction to the expressed wishes of the Allies, but also after having specifically assured them that he would not attempt to undertake such a move. The result was a serious diplomatic crisis, the ramifications of which far outweighed any importance the Islands themselves may have had. For by seizing this territory de Gaulle had brought himself into direct conflict with U.S. policy regarding the Western Hemisphere and, in addition, created great difficulties between the Allies over the issue of U.S. recognition of Vichy, versus British support for de Gaulle.
This thesis, then, will examine the events which led up to this crisis, and will attempt to ascertain what significance, if any, it had on the conduct of the war as a whole.

Abstract:
On may 27th 1941, the p. C. F. (french communist party) calls for the formation of a patriotic union - the "front national" -, which organizes itself from july 1941. The driving force and backbown of which are provided by the p. C. F. , the military branch by the "francs tireurs et partisans" (f. T. P. ), the legitimazing emblem by the "comite du front national". From the autumn 1942 onwards, the first committes engaged in that fight are led to set up a nationwide autonomus organisation run by two pluralistic "comites directeurs" (north zone and south zone). In spring 1943, this trend is encouraged by the fact that the "conseil national de la resistance" (c. N. R. ) acknowledges the status of "mouvement de resistance" to the 'fn' represented by par pierre villon. During the second semester 1943, the f. N. Grows into a nebula of organisations whose dynamism has its roots in each 'pays' (homeland) and trade. It gradually assumes the roles played before by the p. C. F. Within the front national and dedicates itself to the coordination of the 'resistance' within the "comites de la liberation" (c. D. L. ), the c. N. R. And its "bureau permanent" (b. P. ). The f. N. Has these authorities take over the running of all the operations in the 'resistance' and the coordination of the "forces francaises de l'interieur" (f. F. I. ). Under the urge of defending the maquis (february 1944). It plays a prominent part in elaborating the "programme d'action" adopted by the c. N. R. On march 15th 1944. During the fights for the "liberation", le f. N. Plays an active part in organizing the civilians into joining the "insurrection nationale", without

Abstract:
Are we justified in believing our best scientific theories are true? Do we have good reasons for believing those unobservable entities postulated in the scientific theories are real? To these questions, a realist in philsophy of science tends to give an affirmative reply. An anti-realist, on the contrary, holds that neither belief in the truth of theories nor belief in the reality of postulated entities is justified. Although the debate between realists and anti-realists stretches back into antiquity, it made a comeback since the collapse of the logical empiricism in the 1960s, and was brought to a climax in the 1980s. This dissertation aims to display the difficulties that both belligerent parties encounter. It examines the insecure arguments given by both belligerent parties, and shows how flawed they are. The examined arguments are all gleaned from contempory philosophy of science, in particular from the doctrines of four distinguished philosophers, namely P. Duhem, B. Van Fraassen, N. Cartwright, and A. Fine

Abstract:
The subject of this doctorate is strictly speaking a criticism of the aristocratic reason in the cosmopolitique field, it is - to say the criticism of a reason who gives the right as and as duty to substitute itself for the sociogenèse of the political cultures to supply a political culture adapted to the globalization and to its risks. To lead (drive) such a company, it is naturally advisable of to produce a first criticism of the literature, in particular the theories of Hans Jonas, Jean-Pierre Dupuy, Ulrich Beck, Jürgen Habermas but beyond an elaborate criticism, this work tries essentially to recognize and to exceed (overtake) the contradictions of the aristocratic reason by proposing the foundations of an intuitive political science

Abstract:

This research aims to identify another respective regarding the sertanejo figure in the magazine called O Cruzeiro (1946-1951) through Pierre Verger?s photo reports. We intend to analyze Verger?s angle in the pages of O Cruzeiro, whose works compound the moment of formation of this journal?s new visual identity, also analyzing different connected visual languages as well as considering mainstream ideas at that time in a vast context. It hasn?t been given importance to his participation in this magazine, what makes it significant to be recovered by us: the historical dimension of his work in the Brazilian photojournalism formation. The Brazilian photojournalism formation has been seen as a formulator of speeches concerning our culture, being able to attribute meanings to the construction of Northeast identity and its population. This study was made of qualitative analysis of photo reports, where we tried to understand how the construction of different viewpoints on sertanejo?s representation was done in the magazine O Cruzeiro. We believe that Verger has given other prospect at this "national stereotype", composing unusual imagery narratives in the context of visual culture proposed by the journal, along with differing in relation to the recurrence of other stigmatizing discourses, although he?s also contributed to the association between the categories "Northeast "and" past ".

Abstract:
In this paper the authors build upon the single degree of freedom ice-structure interaction model initially proposed by Matlock, et al. (1969, 1971). The model created by Matlock, et al. (1969, 1971), assumed that the primary response of the structure would be in its fundamental mode of vibration. Modal analysis is used in this study, in which the response of each mode is superposed to find the complete modal response of the entire length of a pier subject to incremental ice loading. In Matlock, et al., the physical system is a bottom supported pier modeled as a cantilever beam. Realistic conditions such as ice accumulation on the pier modeled as a point mass and uncertainties in the ice characteristics are introduced in order to provide a stochastic response. The impact of number of modes in modeling is studied as well as dynamics due to fluctuations of ice impact height as a result of typical tidal fluctuations. A Poincare´ based analysis following on the research of Karr, et al. (1992) is employed to identify and periodic behavior of the system response. The intention of this work is to provide a foundation for future work coupling multiple piers and connecting structure for a comprehensive ice-wind-structural dynamics model.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Wind power is known as an abundant source of energy that can be a promising alternative to conventional energy resources. Obtaining a competitive cost of energy for wind power harnessing technologies requires accurate resource assessment and design analyses. A robust, yet cost-effective wind turbine structure design reduces the chance of system failure in extreme events; it also reduces the operation and maintenance cost. This work obtains the required inputs for conducting fluid structure interaction (FSI) analyses of 3D Bergey Excel 10kW wind turbine installed in Jennette’s Pier in North Carolina. Six years (2013–2018) wind data (magnitude and direction) at the Jennette’s Pier are used to obtain the site wind characteristics. Some worthwhile data such as prevailing wind direction and wind speed, average air temperature, pressure and density are determined through this study. The flow field around the turbine blades is simulated to obtain the pressure distribution and aerodynamic coefficients using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, ANSYS Workbench. The results will be beneficiary to the researchers and engineers in evaluating the turbine performance in sites with wind characteristics similar to Jennette’s Pier. Moreover, the outputs of the work can be used for designing enhanced drivetrain components.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The paper presents results from experiments conducted to test the limits on precision and versatility of the method of camera-space manipulation for manufacturing operations. The task used as the basis for the experiment is a close-tolerance rigid-body mating task. The receiving piece is stationary and arbitrarily positioned and oriented. Motion of the inserted piece requires six degrees of freedom for task completion. This is accomplished using the very large GMF S-400 manipulator. The maneuver is guided entirely by information from two uncalibrated cameras. Without the benefit of passive compliance, relative position resolution of the two pieces of about half a millimeter is achieved with considerable reliability. The experiment makes use of newly-developed “ring” cues (and associated image-analysis software) which are painted on the two bodies to be joined.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper presents the theoretical modeling and parameter analysis of vibration assisted robotic assembly involving peg-in-hole insertion. Transitions among various mating configurations during the vibration assisted insertion are studied. Mating forces and insertion motions are analyzed and numerically simulated. Insertion failure is classified into several types, with the characteristic of each type studied. The types of insertion failure include jamming due to insufficient assembly forces, jamming due to robot deflection, jamming due to assembly geometry restriction, wedging due to compression forces, and peg sliding opposite to the insertion direction. Experiments are performed, where vibration is applied to the hole piece when a SCARA robot is performing peg-in-hole insertion, to verify the analytical results.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract: In the year between April 1910 and March 1911 Le Corbusier – then Charles-Edouard Jeanneret – composed maybe the most comprehensive piece of writing of his career: a manuscript entitled “La construction des villes” which took on to systematically investigate the architectural elements that the city is made from. Taking Camillo Sitte’s Der Städte-Bau nach seinen künstlerischen Grundsätzen of 1889 as his intellectual starting point, Jeanneret developed a complex and convincing thesis within several months, however never published it himself. One of the topics that appear throughout Jeanneret’s manuscript is the quality of space as enclosure. This paper takes this observation as a starting point to ask how the manuscript that was put aside after March 1911 (and only shortly picked up again by Jeanneret in 1915) may have influenced Le Corbusier’s architectural thinking. In order to achieve this, the chapter “The Illusion of the Plan” from Vers une architecture is investigated as a link between La construction des villes and Le Corbusier’s houses. Finally, the Maison La Roche-Jeanneret and the Villa Savoye are read as buildings that very strongly incorporate aspects of thinking urban space in a way that way that closely relates to his studies back in 1910. Yong, Yan. "Vibration of Euler-Bernoulli Beams With Arbitrary Boundaries and Intermediate Constraints." In ASME 1991 Design Technical Conferences. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 1991. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/detc1991-0284.

Abstract:
Abstract It is an easy task to obtain the analytical solution for a simple Euler-Bernoulli beam. Difficulties, however, do arise when a beam structure has a large number of different-type intermediate constraints, such as exterior simple supports, interior hinges, rollers and other elastic supports. The purpose of this paper is to develop a systematic approach to obtain exact solutions for any kinds of complex beam configurations. The main feature of this approach is that the vibration motion is treated as the result of wave scattering around different media. The discovery of wave scattering phenomena around intermediate constraints sheds the light, for the first time, on the fact that any constraint can serve as a waveguide capable of transmitting and reflecting waves in either directions. This new finding enables us to treat a complex beam structure as a stepped beam which can be handled easily by using the wave propagation approach, previously developed by Yong and Lin (1989) for the analysis of piece-wise periodic structures.

Full text
Abstract:
Hanne Darboven’s (1941-2009) Opus 17a is a composition for solo double bass that is rarely performed due to the physical and mental challenges involved in its performance. It is one of four opuses from the composers monumental 1008 page Wünschkonzert (1984), and was composed during her period of making “mathematical music” based on mathematical systems where numbers were assigned to certain notes and translated to musical scores. It can be described as large-scale minimalism and it is highly repetitive, but even though the same notes and intervals keep repeating, the patterns slightly change throughout the piece. This is an attempt to unfold the many challenges of both interpreting, preparing and performing this 70 minute long solo piece for double bass consisting of a continuous stream of eight notes. It is largely based on my own experiences of preparing, rehearsing and performing Opus 17a, but also on interviews I have conducted with fellow bass players Robert Black and Tom Peters, who have both made recordings of this piece as well as having performed it live. One is met with few instrumental technical challenges such as fingering, string crossing and bowing when performing Opus 17a, but because of its long duration what one normally would take for granted could possibly prove to be challenging.
