Abstract:

Abstract:
Thanks largely to the work of Pierre van der Eng we now have quite a good picture of trends in growth of Indonesia's real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) over the twentieth century. There were two periods, each of around three decades when growth was positive in per capita terms. From 1900 to 1930, real GDP grew at 2.7 per cent per annum; if we assume that population grew over this period at around 1.2 per cent per annum, then annual growth in real per capita terms was 1.5 per cent per annum. This implies an increase over a thirty-year period in per capita GDP of around fifty-six per cent. Beginning in 1929, there was a sustained growth collapse which continued through the early 1930s; real per capita GDP in 1934 was only eighty-three per cent of the 1928 level in 1934 (Table 1). Some recovery occurred in the latter part of the 1930s, and by 1941 per capita GDP had returned to roughly the 1928 level. But the twenty-five years from 1941 to 1966 were characterised by foreign occupation, revolutionary struggle, and, after 1949, considerable macroeconomic instability culminating in hyper-inflation in the early and mid-1960s. In 1967, per capita GDP was estimated by Van der Eng to be only about seventy-five per cent of the 1928 figure.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This article considers the concept of a ‘language of things’, which Pierre Schaeffer developed in his early work, the Essai sur la radio et le cinema (1941–42). On the basis of a careful consideration of this text, it will appear that the ‘language of things’ engages a specific posture that shows, in the process of concrete music’s emergence, two distinct but interrelated aspects: one concerning things themselves and the other concerning language. It is this knot, this interwovenness, that we will try to understand in this article. The article will show that the promotion of noise is directly linked to the deconstruction of language and that these two processes, which can be precisely identified in Schaeffer’s early works, refer to a fundamental switch, signalling the birth of musique concrète.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Flora of Peninsular Malaysia project was initiated in 2005 (Kiew & Rafidah 2007, Saw & Chung 2007), and aims to document the entire flora of the region formerly known as Malaya or Malay Peninsula. As part of this project, the present author is revising the Buxaceae for the Flora, represented in Peninsular Malaysia by the single genus Buxus Linnaeus (1753: 983). The genus was last revised by Hatusima in 1942, and in his revision, Hatusima recognized three species in Peninsular Malaysia [viz. Buxus holttumiana Hatusima (1942: 270), B. malayana Ridley (1926: 475) and B. rupicola Ridley (1911: 166)]. All three taxa are confined to limestone forests at 20–450 m above sea level, and Hatusima (1942) considered all species as endemic to Peninsular Malaysia. In his revision, however, Hatusima described B. holttumiana from a single collection gathered in 1938 from Kaki Bukit, Perlis (Kiah SFN 35239, see Figure 1A & B) and considered the thicker, shining leaves with fewer veins, the longer, erect (not strongly recurved and divaricating) styles as diagnostic characters for this species. Hatusima (1942), however, stated that he did not compare his new taxon with material of B. cochinchinensis Pierre ex Gagnepain (1921: 481), and his description of the latter was more or less a verbatim transcription of Gagnepain’s (Gagnepain 1921).

Abstract:

Abstract:
Sainte-Anne Hospital is the largest psychiatric hospital in Paris. Its long and fascinating history began in the 18th century. In 1952, it was at Sainte-Anne Hospital that Jean Delay and Pierre Deniker used the first neuroleptic, chlorpromazine, to cure psychiatric patients, putting an end to the expansion of psychosurgery. The Department of Neuro-psychosurgery was created in 1941. The works of successive heads of the Neurosurgery Department at Sainte-Anne Hospital summarized the history of psychosurgery in France.Pierre Puech defined psychosurgery as the necessary cooperation between neurosurgeons and psychiatrists to treat the conditions causing psychiatric symptoms, from brain tumors to mental health disorders. He reported the results of his series of 369 cases and underlined the necessity for proper follow-up and postoperative re-education, illustrating the relative caution of French neurosurgeons concerning psychosurgery.Marcel David and his assistants tried to follow their patients closely postoperatively; this resulted in numerous publications with significant follow-up and conclusions. As early as 1955, David reported intellectual degradation 2 years after prefrontal leucotomies.Jean Talairach, a psychiatrist who eventually trained as a neurosurgeon, was the first to describe anterior capsulotomy in 1949. He operated in several hospitals outside of Paris, including the Sarthe Psychiatric Hospital and the Public Institution of Mental Health in the Lille region. He developed stereotactic surgery, notably stereo-electroencephalography, for epilepsy surgery but also to treat psychiatric patients using stereotactic lesioning with radiofrequency ablation or radioactive seeds of yttrium-90.The evolution of functional neurosurgery has been marked by the development of deep brain stimulation, in particular for obsessive-compulsive disorder, replacing the former lesional stereotactic procedures. The history of Sainte-Anne Hospital’s Neurosurgery Department sheds light on the initiation—yet fast reconsideration—of psychosurgery in France. This relatively more prudent attitude toward the practice of psychosurgery compared with other countries was probably due to the historically strong collaboration between psychiatrists and neurosurgeons in France.

Abstract:
Sociologists and historians of genealogical filiations invoke modernity as the dissolution of traditional communities that formerly, albeit oft tacitly, bound descendants to ancestors. So as to invent oneself spontaneously and without restraint, the modern figure breaks with the strictures of the past, forging a path toward liberation. This newly-minted “emancipation” gives way to a sense of discomfortable culpability among contemporary “scribes.” In quest of remedy, they fashion a space, at once disturbing yet inviting to the ghosts and spectres of primogenitors, a space that both supports and distorts the words of heir(s). In such an optic, Sylvie Germain (1954) and Jean Rouaud (1952), Gérard Macé (1946), Pierre Michon (1945) and Pierre Bergounioux (1949) are powerfully haunted writers. As beneficiaries/successors, their gestures recall past lives and their words replicate their parents’ inflections and manner of verbal discourse. They are, as such, dispossessed of a familial past that represents little but ruin and grief, yet possessed by those absent beings who intrude obsessively on their consciousness and speech. They are heirs torn apart by a melancholy that extends to the grave of their “predecessors.” Contemporary literature vies with this spectral theme to analyze the ambivalence occasioned by such haunting refrains: artistic victims, orphans and parricidal vestiges of a family past, significantly impacted by the unconscious and linguistic upheavals that accompany such compelling loss.

In the burgeoning field of Vichy France, for example, we have studies of the ideologies of the well-known collaborators and of Vichy's ’National Revolution‘ as well as studies of the havoc those ideologies wreaked on the country and the growing opposition to both the ideas and the consequences. What we do not have is a very clear picture of how those ideas became consequences. The question is important because, unlike eastern European countries where Nazi occupation was naked and brutal, the French ended up amply serving the German cause almost despite themselves and at remarkably low cost to the Germans in terms of personnel. The French were not terrorised into turning over their Jews, their young people, or their crops at gunpoint in the way that, say, the Poles were. And yet they turned them over. Were the French, then, Nazis willing to give their all for the cause? Certainly not: far too many heroic men and women preferred to die as resistants rather than help the Germans.

Abstract:
The work, with regard to the analysis of the documentary corpus, was based on Pierré Dominicé's understanding of school education and female self-tuition, with the purpose of reflecting on the formative and self-formative dimensions of these young women in the corresponding secondary degrees, from 1941 to 1948. In terms of conclusion, the historical analysis carried out reveals that the complete and uniform school formation and the self-tuition of the students Petronila da Silva Neri and Maria Isabel Neves were analogous to the intergenerational interactions and intragenerational interactions, planned by specific legislation, set of norms and study programs due to universalized formative purposes and in the face of a "generational unit" of this student youth. Keywords: Education of women. Abstract:

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Jules Joseph Dejerine (1849-1917) became renowned for his many contributions to neurology, including his anatomical and anatomo-functional studies, particularly those in the field of language and the peripheral nervous system. A disciple of Vulpian and a rival of Charcot, Dejerine progressed rapidly in the academic world, reaching the peak of his career in 1911, when he was appointed to the chair of Nervous System Diseases at the Salpêtrière Hospital after defeating Pierre Marie (1853-1940), one of the most distinguished pupils of Jean-Martin Charcot (1825-1893).

Abstract:

Abstract:
We critically re-examine nine of the ten fossil specimens currently assigned to Hepialidae. Three fossils with impressions of wing veins and scales placed in the fossil genus Prohepialus Piton, 1940, and two mummified larvae that show apomorphic characters, have features that support placement in Hepialidae. The other four fossils that we evaluate, Prohepialus incertus Piton, 1940; Oiophassus nycterus Zhang, 1989; Protohepialus comstocki Pierce, 1945; and a fossil scale, lack definitive hepialid characters. One of these, Prohepialus incertus Piton, 1940, appears to represent a symphytan (Hymenoptera), and is excluded from Lepidoptera. The fossilized wings placed in Prohepialus by Jarzembowski display numerous features that indicate a proximate phylogenetic relationship to extant members of the hepialid genus Sthenopis Packard and related genera.

Abstract:
Pierre Cachia slipped away peacefully on 1 April 2017, a few days shy of his ninety-sixth birthday, surrounded by his children and grandchildren. With the passing of this key architect of Arabic studies, those of us who have studied and worked with him will not only mourn the loss of a friend, teacher, and mentor, but also the irretrievable era in which a first generation of postwar American and European Arabists and Orientalists made tremendous strides in fashioning academic studies of modern Arabic literature into what it is today: grounded in native fluency of the Arabic language, informed by real experiences lived in close proximity with Arab writers and storytellers, and took seriously the concerns and priorities of Arab scholars, critics, and intellectuals.
