Full textGalileo’s merit and fame are largely acknowledged by his commentators. The majority of philosophers refer to him as the father of modern science. But commonplaces stop with these considerations. Everything takes place as if the Florentine physicist refused any methodological imprisonment and did not mind taking the ideological color of his interpreters. His work constitutes a first-rate subject in philosophy of science. The development of the latter as a full-fledged discipline at the beginning of the 20th Century was accompanied in France with an intense reflection on modern science and the philosophy which underlies it. The rationalistic glorification of the Enlightenment and positivism had made Galileo the hero who allowed classical mechanics to replace astrological physics. He was considered by Comte to be the creator of Science. At the beginning of 20th Century it was time for a reevaluation. The empiricism of the Enlightenment and the general facts of Auguste Comte yielded to an aprioristic comprehension of modern physics defended by Paul Tannery. Philosophy of science as it is practiced today in France was shaped by the endeavours of Tannery and Gaston Milhaud. If the image of Galileo in Tannery closely resembles that found in Alexandre Koyré, Pierre Duhem, who defended the idea of a continuity between Medieval Science and Classic Science, stands apart

Full textThe purpose of this doctoral thesis is to study the French tragedy in the seventeenth century researching into the notion of tragic flaw, hamartia, and to show the originality and the diversity of the French classical tragedy. This notion, commented by Aristotle in "Poetics" originally differs from either an intentional crime or an accidental one. The tragic flaw presupposes the participation of an agent without denying the presence of fortuity. Although a tragic hero is responsible for his misfortune, as it proceeded from his fault, the result exceeds his intention. And this disparity between intention and misfortune makes the audience feel compassion for the hero suffering from his misfortune. If this compassion is one of the emotions caused only by tragedies, the tragic flaw constitutes in this respect an essential element of tragedy. But is the concept of fault identical in the Christendom society of the seventeenth century? To answer this question, I deal with the tragedies of seven dramaturges, Alexandre Hardy, Pierre Du Ryer, Jean Rotrou, Tristan L’Hermite, Pierre Corneille, Jean Racine and Jean-Galbert de Campistron, to cover the seventeenth century. In the first section of this work, I examine the notion of fault in the theoretical texts. The second section consists in studying the tragic figure. The third section is about the nature of the fault, the private fault and the politic fault. The fourth section concerns the status of fault on the dramaturgical level, before examining moral questions in the final section. This work reveals the importance of Aristotle’s Poetics in the French tragedy of the seventeenth century

Full textAlexandre Boëly occupies a unique and paradoxical position in the French music of the first half of the 19th century. This descendant of cantors belonging to the Royal chapel took the opposite course to his time by taking up an incessant fight in favor of instrumental music and virtues of counterpoint and by becoming one of the first discoverers in France of Beethoven and Bach in addition to Haydn, Mozart and Clementi. This shrewdness combined with some exemplary talents of organist in Saint-Germain l'Auxerrois brought him the approbation of elite. Lonely, modest, Boëly is an artist whose his contemporaries didn't speak much about. His singular position acquires meaning and relief when it is integrated in its time. It is the reason why as the approach of his life, the approach of his work (piano, organ, chamber music) in which he uses the fusion of European aesthetics, is made in the double light of his own culture and of the production of his contemporaries. The spirit of his little pieces, his tormented harmonic language announce, from his start, romantism but the construction of his sonatas, the economy of utilized means show his attachment to the mastery of the classics. The work and the action of his independent man, really irreplaceable in the French music at a problematic time of its history, amply deserve rehabilitation

Full textThis PhD in modern European intellectual history investigates concepts and critiques of the state that emerged in French postwar thought. It shows how philosophers such as Éric Weil and Alexandre Kojève placed the state, conceived as the highest expression of rationality, at the heart of political thought. Secondly, this work demonstrates how the rise of neo-Hegelianism, which describes the state as an emancipatory force, came under sustained attack in the 1960s and 1970s. The ethnologist Pierre Clastres raised provocative questions about the origin of the state and overturned long-held tenets about the centrality of the state in Western political thought. He also challenged Marxist approaches that link the emergence of the state to the development of economic forces. Clastres’ insights were further developed in the work of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari as well as in the writings of Marcel Gauchet. Thirdly, geographers such as Yves Lacoste at the journal Hérodote turned to a critical analysis of the space of the state, while specialists of Ancient Greece such as Jean-Pierre Vernant and Pierre Vidal-Naquet reconstructed the constitution of a democratic space in classical Athens. Their work highlights a spatial turn in French thought
