Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This article presents findings from experiments into piano and live electronics undertaken by the author since early 2007. The use of improvisation has infused every step of the process—both as a methodology to obtain meaningful results using interactive technology and as a way to generate and characterize a collaborative musical space with composers. The technology used has included pre-built MIDI interfaces such as the PianoBar, actuators such as miniature DC motors and sensor interfaces including iCube and the Wii controller. Collaborators have included researchers at the Centre for Digital Music (QMUL), Richard Barrett, Pierre Alexandre Tremblay and Atau Tanaka.

Abstract:
Medieval furnishings preserved in aristocratic estates and ecclesiastical institutions took on new life in the nineteenth century as the turmoil of the French Revolution reactivated their use value, transforming them into collectibles, fuel, or raw materials for new building projects. This essay relies on the taxonomies of reuse proposed by archaeologist Michael Schiffer to evaluate the preservation, recycling, and repurposing of objects such as medieval choir stalls, chests, and beds by conservators, architects, artists, and collectors Alexandre Du Sommerard, Eugène-Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc, Albert Jacquemart, Victor Hugo, Pierre Loti, and Frédéric Spitzer. These prominent figures' repurposing of antique furniture mirrors nineteenth-century constructions of the medieval period itself.

Abstract:
Along with a simple ekphrasis, a description of a separate work, we would like to single out a complex ekphrasis, a description of the whole museum hall or museum collection. Such a description implies an intense experience of space and is possible primarily in descriptive lyrics with intense drama. In the complex ekphrasis, one can see the infl uence not only of tastes, but also of artistic criticism ideas of the time. It is proved that the poem "The Escape to Egypt" by Nikolay Zabolotsky (1955) is a complex ekphrasis, which arose under the indirect infl uence of Charles Pierre Baudelaire’s poetry and Alexandre Benois’s artistic criticism, describing the effects of one of the Hermitage halls. The infl uence of the plots presented in this hall of the Hermitage on poetic decisions could also be traced in later poetry.

Abstract:
The article deals with the influence of theatrical aesthetics on Pierre Alexis Ponson du Terrail – the famous writer of the French popular literature of the second half of the 19th century. The great connoisseur of the theatre, Viscount of Ponson du Terrail filled his novels – and first of all, an extensive cycle of works about Rocambole – with allusions to the scenic practices of his time (first and foremost, he speaks about Parisian pulp theatres) and plays that had won favour with the commonalty: "Le Chiffonnier de Paris" by Félix Pyat and "La Tour de Nesle" by Alexandre Dumas. On the other hand, performability is a paradigmatic feature of feuilleton. Viscount of Ponson du Terrail was the leading representative of this genre. Particular attention is paid to the production of the play "Rocambole" by Auguste Anicet-Bourgeois and Ernest Blum (1864) and the transformations that the novel text underwent in the stage version.

Full text
Abstract:
Early maps and charts of Africa--here defined as those produced before colonial penetration--have seldom been used as a source for historical studies. Generally they are valued more for their decorative qualities than for their geographical content. Jonathan Swift gave form to this viewpoint in his famous --or notorious--lines: So geographers in Afric-mapsWith savage-pictures fill the gapsAnd o'er unhabitable downsPlace elephants for want of townslines which stereotyped the African cartography until today. But it is not only eighteenth century maps that have been exposed to ridicule; those made in colonial times have also been subjected to stinging criticism. For instance, the linguist Pierre Alexandre noticed that on the official map of Cameroun made before independence a certain “Ambababoum” is shown as an important village on the road from Yaoundé to Bafia. However, it does not exist and has never existed within living memory. And, examining another map, he observed that certain peoples who do not exist are mentioned, while others who do exist are omitted.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Professor Jacob Ade Ajayi, myself, and Professors Mohamed Omer Beshir and John Paden gave papers at the symposium and Professor Michael Crowder delivered a special public lecture on the current crisis in African Studies (see p. 109). We are very grateful to Professor Helmut Ruppert, Director of Africanistics at Bayreuth, and to our Executive Council member, Professor Franz Rottland, and to Professor and Mrs Christopher Winter and all their colleagues for inviting us to meet at Bayreuth in this very productive fashion and in such congenial company. The meeting served to highlight the continuing international role of the Institute. Professors Martin Njeuma (Cameroon) and Toshinao Yoneyama (Japan) were attending Executive Council for the first time. The following new members were elected to Council: Professor AH Mazrui (Vice-Chairman), Professor Catherine Coquery-Vidrovitch (Consultative Director), Professor J. M. Schoffeleers, Professor Abdoulaye Bara Diop and Dr Steven Moyo. While welcoming Professor Coquery-Vidrovitch as incoming French Consultative Director, warm tribute was paid to her retiring predecessor, Professor Pierre Alexandre, who had for so many years sustained French support for the Institute. The Institute was extremely fortunate to have enjoyed the advice and guidance of a colleague of such distinction and wide-ranging expertise.
