Abstract:
Recognized as the most important piece of the early 17th century ecclesiastical historiography, it was removed by Pope Paul VI from the Index of Forbidden Books, together with all his other writings, only after the Second Vatican Council in the middle of the 20th century. Despite approaching the fourth centennial anniversary of the release of his writings, Sarpi’s contribution to the political, theological, and economic thought of his time continues to be insufficiently recognized. Recent and innovative studies, however, promise to repair a multi-secular and quasi-intentional silence or obliviousness. Keywords: Paul Sarpi. Tridentine Council. Protestant Reformation. Abstract:
This essay in comparative history considers how governing elites and rural publics have interpreted rules of law and criminal behavior in times of radical tenure transformation. During the twentieth century, Russians experienced three state-sponsored attempts at property rights revolution: firstly, the pre-1917 Stolypin Reforms to privatize the ubiquitous peasant communes, secondly, Stalin’s 1930s campaign to forcibly collectivized peasant communes, and thirdly, the 1990s ‘shock therapy’ reforms to replace Soviet collectivism with wholesale privatization. In each case, adherents of the pre-existing property systems were excluded from the decision-making process that established the new one. Russia’s historical experience is viewed in light of the contested emergence of private property regimes during England’s enclosure movement, and during the nineteenth-century Euro- pean settler appropriation of American Indian land as private property—with African-born plantation workers also later claimed as private property. In some cases, resistance was viewed as criminal; in others, it was punishable as treason.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This article aims to clarify Japanese South-commissioned writers’ perception of Eurasians in 1940s Indonesia on the basis of Abe Tomoji’s retelling of a tale of treachery in his essay “Chi to Tsuchi to Kokoro— Eruberuferuto no koto nado” (1944.7). The treachery in question is that of Pieter Elberfeld, a Eurasian man accused of plotting a rebellion against Dutch East Indies Company authorities with Javanese assistance, who was then brutally executed. In 1930s Japan, this story was symbolically employed by the “anti-Western” movement. Abe portrays Eurasians as people who act without clear reasons because of their mixed-blood nature, and he represents them as “born traitors.” By employing the notion of the “contact zone” as a conceptual framework through which to interpret Abe’s essay, this article argues that this portrayal of Eurasians is related to the Japanese military policy towards enemy aliens in Indonesia. This policy exempted Eurasians from internment in camps alongside Europeans if they could prove their Asian descent. As a result, many Eurasians who once prided themselves on their European ancestry began to identify themselves as Indonesians. This article’s findings fill the void in previous research on Abe as a South-commissioned writer, which primarily focuses on Indonesian scenic beauty and the eroticization of Dutch women there.

Abstract:
Finalmente, hemos incorporado una reseña realizada por Daniel Noemi Voionmaa del trabajo de Luis Martín-Cabrera titulado Radical Justice: Spain and the Southern Cone beyond Market and State.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Credit risk is one of the major risks banks and financial institutions are faced with. With the New Basel Capital Accord, banks and financial institutions have the opportunity to improve their risk management process by using Internal Rating Based (IRB) approach. In this thesis, we focused on the internal credit rating process. First, a short overview of credit scoring techniques and validation techniques was given. By using real data set obtained from a Turkish bank about manufacturing firms, default prediction logistic regression, probit regression, discriminant analysis and classification and regression trees models were built. To improve the performances of the models the optimum sample for logistic regression was selected from the data set and taken as the model construction sample. In addition, also an information on how to convert continuous variables to ordered scaled variables to avoid difference in scale problem was given. After the models were built the performances of models for whole data set including both in sample and out of sample were evaluated with validation techniques suggested by Basel Committee. In most cases classification and regression trees model dominates the other techniques. After credit scoring models were constructed and evaluated, cut-off values used to map probability of default obtained from logistic regression to rating classes were determined with dual objective optimization. The cut-off values that gave the maximum area under ROC curve and minimum mean square error of regression tree was taken as the optimum threshold after 1000 simulation. Abstract:
The aim of the present study is to define the development of the comedy of Plauto-Terencian origin after the Council of Trent. It will examine the comedies of Luigi Groto, comparing them with other comedies of the Sixteenth Century. There was a reinvention of the comedy based on the Plautian model in the first half of the Cinquecento. The model (called motoria), which was full of effects and lively with action, was adapted to the needs of the era and the public taste. Subsequently this model was enriched by patterns of the Terencian comedy called stataria. The stataria, differently from the motoria, gave more room to characters and to reflections of the comedy itself. Some playwrights, i.e. Angelo Beolco and Pietro Aretino, both fundamental for the study, followed this development in their plays. The three comedies that we are going to analyse, differ from each other. Every chapter is going to examine only one comedy and only from one point of view. In the first chapter, we are going to analyse the language of comedy that Groto proposed in the La Emilia (1579). This play is based on Ludovico Aroisto's elaboration of Plautus. In the second chapter, we are going to look at different perceptions of female characters in the Il Thesoro (1583), Groto's second comedy. We will see how the change in the importance of women on stage modified the other characters. In the last chapter we are going to interpret how the La Alteria (1587), based on Terence and Aretino, became a pure metacomedy, and how its hedonistic structure was influenced by Ariosto, Aretino and Beolco.

Abstract:
This thesis analyses how the dispositions that resulted from the Trento Council (1545-1563) evolved the beneficial system of the Catholic Church. This is done from four great interrelated objectives. The first one is studying the organization and the composition of the community of beneficiaries of the Vic’s church of Pietat. The second objective is to analyse how the Vic’s society is affected by the tridentin modifications in the Catholic Church’s beneficial system. The third is to know to what extent the dispositions of the council modify the social relationships and, if that is the case, determine if the case is specific to Vic’s bishopric or if it is extrapolatable to other places. The fourth objective is to study the relation between the Economy, the Church and the Society. The thesis is about the community of beneficiaries of the Vic’s church of Pietat between its foundation (1613) and the translocation of the Martyr Saints relics to the major altar of the church of Pietat (1664). The community of beneficiaries of the church of Pietat is created by the beneficiaries of Capbreu of the cathedral. This is done as an instrument in their fight with the Capitol of canons in order to become a college. This study analyses how the community of beneficiaries is founded, who forms part of it and where it is located. The study also analyses the relations with other collectives – such as the episcopal institution, the Capitol of canons, the Capbreu of the cathedral and the Municipal Council. Finally, the study investigates how it is consolidated, how it is organized and what transcendence it has in the city’s economic life and its social role.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The demand of petroleum fuel is increasing day by day. To meet up the energy demand, people of developing countries like Bangladesh basically used energy from indigenous sources, which are reducing quickly. Hence, it should be emphasized to explore unconventional fuel to overwhelm the crisis of petroleum fuels. Koroch (Pongamia pinnata L. Pierre) is a quick-growing leguminous tree that has the ability to grow on marginal land. Higher oil yield as well as physicochemical properties increases the suitability of using Pongamia as a promising substitute for supplying feedstock of biofuel production. Besides biofuel production, P. pinnata has multipurpose uses as traditional medicine to animal feed, bio-pesticides, and bio-fertilizers. A better understanding and knowledge on the ecological distribution, botanical characteristics, physiology, and mode of reproduction along with physicochemical properties, and biosynthesis of oil is essential for sustainable production of biofuel from P. pinnata. In this chapter, we discuss overall biological and physicochemical properties as well as cultivation and propagation methods that provide a fundamentals for exploiting and improving of P. pinnata as a promising renewable source of biofuel feedstock.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Chapter 8 tells the story of Mario Pieri (1776–1852) and of certain other Ionian and Greco-Italian diaspora intellectuals with whom he was connected. Drawing both from his unpublished diary and his published autobiography, and by following Pieri’s steps from Russian-controlled Corfu to Napoleonic and Habsburg Padua, Treviso, and Venice, and from there to Restoration Florence and back to British-controlled Corfu, it explores the way this ex-Venetian subject and transnational patriot came to see himself as a diaspora Greek through his involvement in Italian, and more specifically Tuscan philhellenism. The chapter thus hopes to tell something about the perceptions of the war from a position far removed from the theatre of battle, as well as of the impact that the Greek revolution and the European philhellenisms had on the peoples of the ‘Greek diasporas’, reshaping even the very meaning of this notion.

Abstract:
In the modelling of the natural shapes (clouds, ferns, trees, shells, rivers, mountains), the limits imposed by Euclidean geometry can be exceeded by the fractals. Fractal geometry is relatively young (the first studies are the works by the French mathematicians Pierre Fatou (1878-1929) and Gaston Julia (1893-1978) at the beginning of the 20th century), but only with the mathematical power of computers has it become possible to realize connections between fractal geometry and the other disciplines. It is applied in various fields now, from the biology to the architecture. Important applications also appear in computer science, because the fractal geometry permits to compress the images; to reproduce, in the virtual reality environments, the complex patterns and the irregular forms present in nature using simple iterative algorithms execute by computers. Recent studies apply this geometry for controlling the traffic in the computer networks (LANs, MANs, WANs, and the Internet) and in the realization of virtual worlds based on World Wide Web. The aim of this chapter is to present fractal geometry, its properties (e.g., the self similarity), and their applications in computer science (starting from the computer graphics, to the virtual reality).

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter highlights how the moral assessment of crying typical of the seventeenth century led to a profound reformulation of the physiological explanation for tears, carried out within the humoral paradigm as proposed by Hippocrates and revisited by Galen. Galen’s fundamental contribution consists in proposing an emotional therapy that is not only medical but also philosophical: man, naturally humoral and therefore unable to realize the ideal of apathy, can achieve a balance between passions and virtues only by acting on both the will and the body. As a paradigmatic example of the revival of the Galenic doctrine of temperament, the chapter then analyses the ‘masks’ of Democritus and Heraclitus, popular incarnations of two visions of reality that correspond to laughter and tears, respectively, showing how these two emotions—formerly seen as rivals—were considered sympathetic in the seventeenth century. The figures of Democritus and Heraclitus are also used in the investigation of the role of emotions in the diagnosis and treatment of melancholy, the humoral disease par excellence. The last section of the chapter explores the first text dedicated exclusively to systematically analysing the physiological-moral value of tears: De lacrymis libri tres, published in 1661 by Pierre Petit. A physician, Petit realized that physiology is not sufficient to explain emotional tears and, although without yet having adequate conceptual tools, sought to combine medical-scientific investigation with philosophical and classical literary culture.

Abstract:

Abstract: The text, entitled Photographs that severed a look at Le Corbusier, analyzes some pictures to houses built by Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret. The photographs have common characteristics that lead to the interpretation that we have a plan in two dimensions within a hole, and three-dimensional space, the room represented. The photographs, showing a hole and a space, incite to think that they are referring to the architectural experience of crossing a vain. Abstract:
This paper explores the changes taking place today in urban regeneration dynamics of the big metropolis that are committed to contemporary urban economic models incorporated in globalization. The weight of the cultural and creative industry comes together with new characters and lifestyles directly linked to the innovative and social "new economy", whose movements today represent the touchstone of urban dynamics affecting central areas. We propose to analyze these dynamics from the cases of Madrid and Buenos Aires, in terms of three identified factors: the policies for rehabilitation of urban heritage, the policies for placing knowledge economy, and commercial transformation of traditional markets and local shops. We argue that these three vectors reinforce urban renewal processes moving the border of gentrification towards new frameworks and territorial frontiers.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In Latin America, the implementation of neoliberalism as an economic system has led to a development model with high heterogeneity and socioeconomic inequality. The adoption of policies of liberalization, deregulation and economic flexibility, along with the withdrawal of the state of urban management, major changes occurred in the cities. In the hands of great social and demographic change, urban areas experienced rapid development, uneven economic growth in the distribution of income, rising unemployment and high levels of urban informality. Framed in this reality, the production of urban space, was carried out by the management of three social actors: 1.The real estate market; 2 and 3 the national state informal settlements. Of these, the state plays a key role in building the city damming or restricting the development of certain areas either through action (implementation of public policies, regulations, etc.) or omission. Therefore, in a context in which the lack of planning continues, the lack of a framework defining how land occupation imposes the logic of urban real estate market as the main criterion, even for actions of public housing development. This impacts negatively on the city to the extent that speculation favors the private sector, produce residential segregation and inequality in access to land as large sections remain outside the formal market. Which results in the formation of distinct areas within the city exacerbating the gap between social sectors. In Argentina, under the economic growth that occurs after the 2001-2002 crisis, the Federal Government returned home plans to solve the housing problem but with a twist to the social, to meet the needs of the most vulnerable sectors of society. From being solely residential construction (turnkey system) executed by the Provincial Housing Institutes (IPV), policies will be passed to a set of social policies that articulate programs of various orders, domestic, municipal, provincial and IPV. (Argentina Works, Municipality + Close, PROMEVI, PROMEBA Law Pierri implementation of regularization, etc.) that link to social housing problems. However, this has not had the expected results in relation to urban problems. While the need for regional planning was promoted through the PET National and Provincial (Regional Strategic Plan), all implemented programs were developed without proper management tools to define the criteria for the consolidation and development from the Federal Government city and thus ended conspiring against it, as a stage of collective life. The lack of training of local technicians, the use of these programs clientelitas purposes by local politicians and rampant corruption, contributed to aggravating the observed trends. This suggests that the construction of new housing or consolidation or regularization of squatter settlements in vulnerable areas without legal justification and planning, far from mitigating the inequalities, negative effects on the city. Under this hypothesis, this paper analyzes the impact of new housing policies in the Metropolitan Area of Tucumán (AMET), nearly 10 years of implementing a set of tending to the equal distribution of access to urban land social measures. It is concluded that the actions taken by the State produced an increase and consolidate the processes of fragmentation and emerging socio-spatial segregation of Tucuman AMET.
