Abstract:
The love poem Ara mé noviza (“To my beloved”) was written in the 19th century in the Ladin municipality of Ampezzo. This composition is mostly attributed to the Ampezzo engineer Firmiliano De Gaspari (1828-1877), but it could also be a piece of ancient Ampezzo song literature. The 13-stanza poem was recorded – and thus made accessible to a larger audience – for the first time in Ampezzo illustrato, a publication about the history of Cortina written by De Gaspari (probably around 1860), which is unfortunately lost or missing today. In the following decades, several stanzas from this work were r

Titian Vecellio was born in 1488–1489 in Pieve di Cadore in the Dolomite Alps. For nearly a century, Titian was the undisputed master of Venetian painting. Endowed with practical skills as well, Titian tailored his works to meet the needs of his patrons. Approximately one hundred of his portraits have been preserved. Vasari writes that there was no famous lord, prince, or notable woman who was not portrayed by this great artist. Titian's portraits represent a historical report of the century. He became the painter most in demand at courts across Europe (French, Italian, and Spanish). The emper

The author analyses the technical features and the history of the «Venetian saws» of the Cadore region, an area that was at the centre of an economic system based on the use of forest resources, saw milling and water transportation of wood. The presence of these installations in this area dates back to the twelfth century. In the middle of the nineteenth century they reached their largest number. The cultural events held in Alpine and Apennine regions, such as festivals, gatherings, concerts, theatrical performances, and community celebrations, play a crucial role in the revitalisation and regeneration of mountain areas.
