Structural damage detection at the earliest possible stage is very important in the aerospace industry to prevent major failures. In this work, a potential cost-effective crack detection method using piezoelectric strips bonded on the structure was studied. A crack model was developed and validated. Static, modal and transient dynamic analysises are performed for the case of piezoelectric strips bonded to the structure by using a finite element method to explore the effectiveness of the crack detection method. Piezoelectric plate transducers are commonly used for the generation and detection of ultrasonic signals and have applications in, for example, non-destructive testing and medical imaging. A rigorous theoretical investigation of thermal noise in plate transducers has been undertaken with the aim of establishing the absolute limits of receiver sensitivity in terms of both Minimum Detectable Power (MDP) and Minimum Detectable Force (MDF). Structural health monitoring (SHM) is the process of using measurements of a structureâ s response to known excitations and trying to determine if damage has occurred to the structure. This also fits the description of non-destructive evaluation (NDE). The main difference is that NDE takes place while the structure is out of service and SHM is intended to take place while the structure is in service. As such, SHM provides the opportunity to provide early warning against structural failure. This thesis intends to advance the state of the art in SHM by examining two approaches to SHM: vibrat

This thesis focuses on the development of a new method for the continuous
monitoring of civil engineering structures in order to locate small damages automatically. A
review of the very wide literature on Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) points first out that
the methods can be grouped in four categories based on their need or not of a numerical model,
as well as their need or not of information of the damaged structure to be applied. This state
of the art of the SHM methods highlights the requirement to reach each levels of SHM, which
is in particular for the localization of sma

The use of composite materials within the aerospace industry has increased in the last decades and is still on the rise. Most composite applications are in the aircraft body parts but engine components such as fan blades and fan outlet guide vanes (FOGV) are now also to be found. Metals are well studied and both their fatigue and cracking behavior are well known but for composites this is not the case. Composites also have problems such as micro-cracking, delamination and porosity, which all can be difficult to detect but yet result in significant decreas in load carrying capacity. The ability

Abstract:
This study evaluates the effectiveness of actively controlled piezoceramics with positive position feedback (PPF) for reducing structural vibrations. A comparison is made between active control with PPF and a parallel resistor-inductor (RLC) shunt technique. The primary objectives of this study are to: 1. Explore the feasibility of using smart materials and fiber optics for simultaneous health monitoring and active damping of a representative aircraft panel. 2. Determine how optical fiber sensors may be used to detect vibration modes of an aircraft panel by investigating their use on a
