Abstract: The diagnosis of cancer interferes in the well-being of the family due to frequent hospitalizations and painful procedures that the child undergoes and can unleash symptoms of stress and anxiety in parents. The investigation of psychosocial factors associated to the experience of childhood cancer has been rendered relevant in front of high cure and survival rates of the child and the use of instruments to evaluate the impact of the child's disease on the life of the parents. Considering the inexistence of instruments with this application in our culture, the present study had as objective the translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the Pediatric Inventory for Parents (PIP) for the Brazilian population, as well as evaluation of reliability, validity and usability. PIP is composed of 42 items distributed in four domains of communication, medical care, emotional function and role function. The items are evaluated as to the event frequency in the last week and the difficulty presented during these events. A 5-point Likert-type summative measurement scale was used, where 1 = none and 5 = very high. Larger scores indicate an elevated level of stress. For the procedures of translation and cross-cultural adaptation, the stages of translation, synthesis, backtranslation, evaluation by expert committee and pretest with 30 parents of children with cancer were followed. For evaluation of internal consistency, Cronbach's alfa coefficient was applied. For evaluation of convergent validity, correlation between the adapted instrument and the state portion of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-S) was made. Usability was verified considering the time needed for filling out the instrument, understanding of the instrument and the form of marking the answers. The final version was named "Pediatric Inventory for Parents - Brazilian version" (PIP-BV) and applied to a sample of 101 parents of children with cancer. The subscales and domains of PIP-BV obtained Cronbach's alfa coefficients equal or superior to 0.70. Spearman's rank correlation coefficient varied from +0.28 to +0.83, indicating positive correlation between PIP-BV and STAI-S. The mean time for filling out the instrument was 27.46 minutes and was considered simple and easy to be filled out. The procedure of cross-cultural adaptation was carried out with success and the psychometric properties of validity, reliability and usability of PIP-BV were satisfactory. Further psychometric evaluations in other populations are recommended.

Abstract:
The thesis presented here describes original research in the field of Natural Language Generation (NLG). NLG is the subfield of artificial intelligence that is concerned with the automatic production of documents from underlying data. This thesis in particular focuses on developing new and novel methods for generating text that takes into consideration the recipient’s level of stress as a factor to adapt the resultant textural output. This consideration of taking the recipient level of stress was particularly salient due to the domain that this research was conducted under; providing information for parents of pre-term infants during neonatal intensive care (NICU). A highly technical and stressful environment for parents where emotional sensitivity must be shown for the nature of information presented. We have investigated the emotional and informational needs of these parents through an extensive past literature review and two separate research studies with former and current NICU parents. The NLG system built for this research was called BabyTalk Family (BT-Family). A system that can produce a textual summary of medical events that has occurred for a baby in NICU in last twenty-four hours for parents. The novelty of this system is that is capable of estimating the level of stress of the recipient and by using several affective NLG strategies it is able to tailor it’s output for a stressed audience. Unlike traditional NLG systems where the output would remain unchanged regardless of emotional state of the recipient. The key innovation in this system was the integration of several affective strategies in the Document Planner for tailoring textual output for stress recipients. BT-Family’s output was evaluated with thirteen parents that previously had baby in neonatal care. We developed a methodology for an evaluation that involved a direct comparison between stressed and unstressed text for the same given medical scenario for variables such as preference, understandability, helpfulness, and emotional appropriateness. The results, obtained showed the parents overwhelming preferred the stressed text for all of the variables measured.

To enhance the maintenance practices, Oil and Gas Pipelines are inspected from the inside by automated systems called PIG (Pipeline Inspection Gauge). The inspection and mapping of defects, as dents and holes, in the internal wall of these pipelines are increasingly put into service toward an overall Structural Integrity Policy. The residual life of these structures must be determined such that minimize its probability of failure. For this reason, the investigation on the detection limits of some basic topological features constituted by peaks or valleys disposed along a smooth surface is of great value for determining the sensitivity of the measurements of defects from some combinations of circumferential, axial and radial extent. In this investigation, it was analyzed an inductive profilometric sensor to scan three races, radius r1, r2, r3, in a circular surface of low carbon steel, equipped with eight consecutive defects simulated by bulges and holes by orbit, equally spaced at p/4 rad. A test rig and a methodology for testing in laboratory were developed to evaluate the sensor response and identify their dead zones and jumps due to fluctuations as a function of topological features and scanning velocity, four speeds different. The results are presented, analyzed and suggestions are made toward a new conception of sensor topologies, more sensible to detect these type of damage morphologies

The modern technology of materials and structural integrity of pipelines requests the use of inspection tools named inspection pigs to detect, localize and measure the length, width and depth dimensions of the thickness losses of walls of buried and underwater pipelines in service. These tools run them internally, performing and recording measurements, with performance that varies according to the pig s technology. It has been developed recently an instrumented pig technology, called feller pig. This work aims to indicate factors that influence the feller pig technology performance in the detection and in the accuracy of measurement of the length, width and depth dimensions of the thickness losses on the internal surface of an oil pipeline wall under normal conditions of oil pipe inspection with pig. In this work, is made a collection of factors and an analyses of the technology based on the available literature, as well as an experiment to observe the technology and the factors operating. In the experiment, a feeler pig is used in a pipeline built in carbon steel and in operation that flows petroleum, in witch are observed areas with internal thickness losses occurred naturally. Some of these areas and their dimensions taken by automated ultra-sound scanner are compared with the ones indicated by the feller pig. Based on the data collection, on the analysis and on the experiment, the influence of factors object of this research is discussed. It is concluded that, among these, there are factors related to pipe fabrication tolerances, to wear of pig components, to internal adhesive wear of pipeline, to other pipeline damages and to technology characteristics. Finally, actions are suggested to know better, improve and define the applicability of this technology

Russell, Tiffany Dawn. "The PID-5, Everyday Sadism, and Parental Attachment Predict Sexual Aggression." Thesis, The University of North Dakota, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10125553.

Full text
Abstract:

This study attempted to replicate and expand the Confluence Model of Sexual Aggression (Malamuth et al., 1991) in an online survey of national (n = 512) and university (n = 100) men. Overall, 28.8% of men (national = 29.5%; university = 25%) reported perpetrating sexual aggression against a woman at least once. In the sexually aggressive group, 81.2% reported perpetrating sexual violence more than once, and 40.3% reported six or more acts. It was hypothesized the Confluence Model would be improved by adding everyday sadism, parental attachment, and the Personality Inventory for the DSM-5 (PID-5). In a structural equation model, hostile masculinity (β = .44), childhood sexual abuse (β = .26), juvenile delinquency (β = .28), and physical everyday sadism (β = .20) had significant direct effects on sexual aggression. Physical everyday sadism (β = .26), juvenile delinquency (β = .14), PID-5 callousness (β = .30), and anxious attachment (β = .26) had significant indirect effects on sexual aggression, mediated by hostile masculinity. These predictors accounted for 79% of the variance in the sexual aggression latent variable, which represented considerable model improvement. Unrestricted sociosexuality, misperception of women’s sexual intent, and heavy alcohol use were not significant predictors of sexual aggression in this model.

Jamieson, Morgan P. G. "The ties that bind? : what should characterise a Christian pastoral response to a bereaved parent's desire to maintain continuing bonds with their deceased child?" Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 2019. http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk:80/webclient/DeliveryManager?pid=240744.

Full text
Abstract:
The question around which this thesis is gathered arose from a period of public concern regarding historical practice in respect of post-mortem examinations during which the researcher was required to engage with a significant number of parents who had lost a child, often many years previously. These encounters offered privileged insight into the longevity, nature and expressions of parental grief and, on subsequent reflection, raised questions as to how the specifics of Christian belief might meaningfully engage the pastoral needs of a bereaved parent. Through its capacity to accommodate conversation between human experience; the insights offered by science, philosophy and culture; and the Christian message, practical theology offered a discipline within which such questions could best be explored. Using a research methodology drawing on the principles of hermeneutic phenomenology the lived experience of ten bereaved parents was engaged through semi-structured interviews. The transcription and analysis of these interviews identified key themes - connection; continuity and identity; and reunion - which became the subject of further reflection. Common to these themes is the concept of a continuing relationship ('bond') with the deceased child, a concept at variance with the Freudian thinking that has shaped much of bereavement care over the past century. Such thinking understands a sustained 'relationship' as futile and promotes patterns of care that aim for a staged and time-limited recovery. In contrast the more recent paradigm of 'continuing bonds', which has particular resonance with the loss of a child, offers a different perspective on grief which, in turn, finds accord with a Christian narrative that is profoundly relational and incorporates a message of resurrection offering explicit hope in regard to matters of continued existence, retained identity and eventual reunion.

Deddo, Gary Warren. "Karl Barth's special ethics of parents and children in the light of his trinitarian theological anthropology." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 1990. http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk:80/webclient/DeliveryManager?pid=124332.

Full text
Abstract:
The comprehension of Karl Barth's special ethics of the parent-child relationship as contained in his Church Dogmatics, III/4, requires its being interpreted in terms of his grounding it in his christological and so trinitarian anthropology which is essentially contained in CD, III/2. The key to the inter-connection between Barth's theology and ethics lies in comprehending the character of the relations involved in his doctrine of the analogia relationis. This thesis shows and makes explicit the nature, or better, the 'grammar' of personal being-in-relationship which arises in Barth's Christology, is central to his anthropology, is founded in his doctrine of the Trinity and grounds his special ethics as illustrated in the section on 'Parents and Children'. Barth's grammar of being-in-relationship can be encapsulated in six fluid and dynamic formulae. Being-in-relationship involves a unity of persons, a differentiation between persons, an ordered correspondence of one with another, a pesonal covenantal communion, a dynamic and eschatological becoming, and an extension to include others in convenantal relations. Barth's special ethics of parents and children, while not beyond criticism, is shown to be both relevant and fruitful for further developing a theological ethics of the family, for critiquing other such contributions, and for assisting the Church of Jesus Christ to address a number of issues facing the contemporary American family.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is intended to address the problem of international parental child abduction from Islamic and international perspectives.  During a decade of working as a judge in the state of Qatar a number of cross-border child abduction cases occurred involving GCC, Arab and Western parents.  In none of these cases has the Hague Convention on The Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction (1980) been consulted or mentioned.  There is no evidence that the attention of Qatari judges has ever been drawn to the existence of this important international treaty. However, for the reasons given throughout this study, it will be argued that The Hague Convention is too important to be totally ignored by Muslim countries, while these countries will probably start to face an increasing number of cross-border child abduction cases.  The benefits of acceding to the Convention are made clear by considering a diversity of international cases where the solutions of the Convention best serve the welfare of the abducted children by procedurally ordering their prompt return to their habitual residence, thus putting to an end an arbitrary act of abduction unjustifiably carried out by one of the carers.  It is hoped that in the end this research will bring Islamic and Convention understandings closer to each other with regard to the problem of international parental child abduction.

Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 2010. http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk:80/webclient/DeliveryManager?pid=158574.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores how and why literature and reading, as a practice within Christian families, can play an influential role in the spiritual formation of children. The first part presents a picture of Christian parenting, drawn from three theologians: Karl Barth on parents and children, based in the doctrines of creation and Christology, and the I/Thou relationship; the Roman Catholic doctrine of family as ‘domestic church’, as discussed by Florence Caffrey Bourg; and Stanley Hauweras, largely concerning his emphases of a Christian ethic, the narrative structure of life, and the Body of Christ as essential for raising children. The second part moves to investigate philosophy and literary theory, in order to show how literature is formative, from three philosophers: Richard Eldridge sees it as intellectually educational as one moves between autonomy and embeddedness in moral personhood; Martha Nussbaum argues that it is emotionally experiential, returning emotions, imagination and particulars to a central part of the search for a good life; and Wayne C. Booth presents it as an educating experience, in which one should fully engage with the work, reflect upon it, and share one’s assessments in discussion. In the last chapter and conclusion, four major themes are discussed—individuals in community, narrativity, the good life of faith, and open closure—in order to bring into clearer focus the ways literature and its formative nature can enhance the raising of children in faith, the task of Christian parents.

Data from an F2 swine population, consisting of 600 animals derived from crosses between Piau sires and Commercial dams were used in order to detect QTL with parent-of-origin effects. Phenotypic data on performance, carcass, internal organs, viscera, carcass cuts and meat quality traits were collected in the F2 animals. The population was genotyped for 16 microsatellite loci covering the chromosomes 1, 2 and 144. Based on the genotypes a specific linkage map was constructed for this population. Association analyses were performed using interval mapping by regression for QTL detection. A decision tree for identifying QTL with parent-of-origin effects based on tests against the Mendelian mode of expression was used. Twenty three QTL were detected using the Mendelian model of analysis, three on the chromosome one, five on chromosome two and 15 on chromosome four. It was also detected 12 QTL with parentof-origin effects. Six of these QTL were identified on chromosome one, where three were paternally expressed and three were maternally expressed. Three QTL were detected on chromosome two, where one was paternally expressed and the other two were maternally expressed. The remaining three QTL were identified on chromosome four, all of them were paternally expressed. None of the QTL with parent-of-origin effects was detected by the Mendelian model. The results generated in this study may contribute to a better understanding of the genetic mechanisms involved in the control of quantitative traits.

Abstract:
AbstractIntroduction: - An estimated number of 40 to 80 new-born babies are being abandoned by their mother in Kampala –Uganda annually. These children are usually dumped into dust bins, on streets, on hospital facilities, in bushes or in pit latrines. Aim:-The aim of this study was to investigate the goals of the organizations/institutions working with child abandonment in Kampala, to find out whom they collaborated with, to examine how the staff working with the organization/institution perceive the women who abandon and issue behind. Furthermore their personal incentives to continue to work with the problem, Method: A qualitative approach was used in this study and face to face semi-structured interview were conducted, since this was the best way to explore feelings, thoughts and attitudes of the respondents who gave answers to complicated questions. Research Questions: What are the main goals of the organizations/institutions and with whom do they collaborate with? What are their major hinders and needs? Do they see any progress? What are their perceptions of the mothers who abandon their new-born babies as well as the issues behind this cruel action? When did the staff became aware of this problem and what are the incentives driving them to continue do this work? Results: The results of the study were consistent with the research namely; the role of the organizations was reported being rescuing of the abandoned babies. First they are taken to the hospital during the first critical hours, thereafter are taken. to children court to get a permission to keep them in the children’s home; or find adoptive parent for these children who can give them love, care and education. Tracing mothers or family members was on the agenda, and in some case eventual re-unification was possible. The hinder which were met by the organization while doing their work were financial resources, misinformation about the organizations in the community, poor flow of information, lack of facilities to accommodate abandoned children, and poor collaboration with the government. Conclusion: The organizations/institutions are doing a good work, but procedures which are used at the moment are unfortunately not enough to reduce the problem. Therefore acute and new even radical approaches are needed to be put into consideration.

From the phenomenon of boy demand in China ( which also exists in other cultures ) , I asked the question of the desire for children, meanwhile, I searched in Chinese thought cultural and philosophical references, both to give a psychoanalytic interpretation of the idea of the transmission of structure in China , and to reconcile Chinese thought and psychoanalysis, for understand the structure of the unconscious. I have undertaken this thesis with the hope of understanding the problems that can generate different currents of thought in China, and hope to give an explanation, neither historical nor sociological, but psychoanalytic. My problematic was first consisted of questioning the Chinese preference for the male child leaving the restricted its cultural framework and enlightened by clinical research conducted in the West. More broadly, Chinese thought has been subjected to a psychoanalytic examination to Westerners better understand certain aspects and that the Chinese have a less normative perception, especially regarding the category of "filial piety ". From a methodological point of view, I also must say that without Chinese clinical examples, I had to resort to clinical cases I have personally faced in France and others, I have borrowed Helene Deutsch. Abstract:
The thesis deals the issue of solution of continuous systems by evolutionary computational techniques. Evolutionary computing techniques fall into the field of softcomputing, an advanced metaheuristics optimization that is becoming more and more a method of solving complicated optimization problems with the gradual increase in computing performance of computers. The solution of continuous systems, or the synthesis of continuous control circuits, is one of the areas where these advanced algorithms find their application. When dealing with continuous systems we will focus on regulatory issues. Evolutionary computing can then become a tool not only for optimization of controller parameters but also to design its structure. Various algorithms (genetic algorithm, differential evolution, etc.) can be used to optimize the parameters of the controller, for the design of the controller structurewe usually encounter so called grammatical evolution. However, the use of grammatical evolution is not necessary if appropriate coding is used, as suggested in the presented thesis. The thesis presents a method of designing the structure and parameters of a general linear controller using the genetic algorithm. A general linear regulator is known also as so called polynomial controller, if we encounter the polynomial theory of control. The method of encoding the description of the general linear controller into the genetic chain is crucial, it determines a set of algorithms that are usable for optimization and influence the efficiency of the calculations. Described coding, effective EVT implementation, including multi-criteria optimization, is a key benefit of this work.

Heart Mandala was published in 2017, and it is Ping Lu’s first fully autobiographical work. Heart Mandala details Ping Lu’s relationship with her parents, her process of development, and her journey to adulthood in detail. In Ping Lu’s iconic style, Heart Mandala integrates her expertise in psychology with the narrative structure of a suspense novel and subverts traditional ideas about gender and power. This article primarily uses textual analysis, inductive content analysis, comparative analysis, psychoanalysis, and feminist critique to study the parent–child relationships in Ping Lu’s novels. The research scope of this paper is mainly Ping Lu’s latest literary work, Heart Mandala, but it also includes Ping Lu’s other works related to parent–child relationships. Heart Mandala along with four of Ping Lu’s other literary works including Natural Disasters and Man-Made Calamities Corporation, Monica’s Diary, The Fifth Seal, and Fingers were compared in separate sections. In addition, other relevant literary works were cited for the comparative analysis of Ping Lu’s writing style. The first section of this article contains the introduction. The second section analyzes Ping Lu’s life and five of the literary themes in her novels—nostalgia, historical connections, suspense, science fiction, and parent–child relationships. The third section further analyzes parent–child relationships in Heart Mandala, focusing on the protagonist’s relationships with their father, stepmother, biological mother, and children. The narrative features of the work are discussed. The parts of the narrative that are irrelevant to the protagonist, including the stories of the protagonist’s biological father’s family and those of the protagonist’s half-brother are also explored to gain a comprehensive understanding. The fourth section consists of comparative analysis to deepen and broaden the research scope. In addition, this article tabulates the findings in the end of every important paragraph and section to facilitate reading. The fifth section includes the conclusion of the paper and presents, based on comparison, the implications and value of the narrative style, narrative characteristics, and connotation of the parent–child relationship narratives in Ping Lu’s novels.

To Investigate The Parental Stresses of Children with Home-bounded Services in Ping-Tung Abstract The purposes of this study included: (1) to investigate the parental stresses of children with home-bounded services in Ping-Tung, (2) to investigate the various variables (ex. sex, age, educational background, religion, marital status, age of children, and number of children) among parents of children with home-bounded services, and (3) to investigate the parental raising attitudes toward their children with home-bounded services. The instrument of this study was used “Parenting Stress Index (PSI by Abidin, R. R.)and edited by Yu-Xiu Wung (2001). The researcher used this instrument to investigate parental stresses of children with home-bounded services in Ping-Tung. She distributed about 50 copies of the questionnaires. The content of this instrument was: Personal Ability, Parental Roles Join, Parental Roles Restriction, Conjugal Relation, Social Isolation, Health, Distractibility/Hyperactivity, Child Reinforces Parent, Feeling/Mood, Acceptance, Adaptability, and Demanding ness. In addition, the researcher interviewed 9 parents of children with home-bounded services, she teaches their children for a long time. According to the data analysis, the researcher used the mean, t-test, and one-way ANOVA test to run all the data collection. She also analyzed the interviewing data by verbal word-by-word. The following findings of this study were: (1) The full scale of the parental stress of children with home-bounded services (M=244) was higher than the general population. (2) The parental “social isolation “ (M=15.57) and “parental health” (M=11.57) were lower than the general population. (3) The average of parental stress in: distractibility/hyperactivity (M=18.18), and parental reinforcement (M=10.02). Adaptability (M=31.34) was the highest, parental reinforces (M=10.02) was the lowest in the parental stress of subscales. (4) There was a significant difference in parental stress of “Demanding Domain” (t=2.104) and the total score of “Child Domain” (t=2.077). It was indicated that father’s stress was more than mother’s. did In addition, there was a significant difference in parental educational variable (F=5.251), the finding was indicated that the parents with elementary degrees had higher stresses than the parents with college degrees. Moreover, there were significant differences in the number of children and parental health (F=4.834), the findings were shown that the stress of parents having 4 children was higher than parents having 3, 2, or 1 children/child. (5) The finding of the interview was shown that parents more concerns and worried about their children’s death, educational placement, respite care service, social welfare, and so on.. Based on those above findings, the researcher will give some educational suggestions and recommendations to parents, government, and teachers. "The Influence of Dome Size, Parent Vessel Angle, and Coil Packing Density On Coil Embolization Treatment in Cerebral Aneurysms." Master's thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.18730.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: A cerebral aneurysm is a bulging of a blood vessel in the brain. Aneurysmal rupture affects 25,000 people each year and is associated with a 45% mortality rate. Therefore, it is critically important to treat cerebral aneurysms effectively before they rupture. Endovascular coiling is the most effective treatment for cerebral aneurysms. During coiling process, series of metallic coils are deployed into the aneurysmal sack with the intent of reaching a sufficient packing density (PD). Coils packing can facilitate thrombus formation and help seal off the aneurysm from circulation over time. While coiling is effective, high rates of treatment failure have been associated with basilar tip aneurysms (BTAs). Treatment failure may be related to geometrical features of the aneurysm. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of dome size, parent vessel (PV) angle, and PD on post-treatment aneurysmal hemodynamics using both computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and particle image velocimetry (PIV). Flows in four idealized BTA models with a combination of dome sizes and two different PV angles were simulated using CFD and then validated against PIV data. Percent reductions in post-treatment aneurysmal velocity and cross-neck (CN) flow as well as percent coverage of low wall shear stress (WSS) area were analyzed. In all models, aneurysmal velocity and CN flow decreased after coiling, while low WSS area increased. However, with increasing PD, further reductions were observed in aneurysmal velocity and CN flow, but minimal changes were observed in low WSS area. Overall, coil PD had the greatest impact while dome size has greater impact than PV angle on aneurysmal hemodynamics. These findings lead to a conclusion that combinations of treatment goals and geometric factor may play key roles in coil embolization treatment outcomes, and support that different treatment timing may be a critical factor in treatment optimization.

To increase the growth rate of the black pig, the creation of a hybrid one has been worked frequently in Taiwan. However, hybridization may influence the parental breed and cause genetic instability in the coat colors of the black pig population; black pigs are typically born with a reddish-brown coat. Three genes associated with the parental breed and coat color of the pig which included the Cytb gene of mitochondria DNA, Y chromosome of the SRY gene, and the melanocortin 1 receptor gene (MC1R) in chromosome 6. The aim of this study was to establish the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique combined with the restriction fragment length (RFLP), the high resolution melting (HRM), and the single-strain conformation polymorphism (SSCP) to detect the Cytb, SRY, and MC1R genes which may be used to determine the breed source and coat color of black pigs obtained from the supermarket, traditional market and pig farm in Taiwan. Through the analysis of MC1R gene, a single nucleotide alteration was found in the coden 1 at position G727, causing an alanine (GCG) to threonine (ACG) exchange (G>A) and resulting in a reddish-brown phenotype. MC1R G727A can be used as the molecular marker of a black or reddish-brown coat. The genotype frequencies corresponding GG, GA, and AA were 0.15, 0.85, and 0 sampling from the supermarket, 0.34, 0.66 and 0 from the traditional market, and 0.73, 0.27, and 0 from the pig farm, respectively. The allele frequency with A was 0.43 of the supermarket pig, 0.33 of the traditional market pig and 0.13 of the pig farms, respectively. In addition, another nucleotide alteration from GCG to GCA was observed at position G729. The genotype frequencies corresponding to GG, GA, and AA were 0.92, 0.04, and 0.04 sampling from the supermarket, 0.61, 0.39 and 0 from the traditional market and 0.69, 0.15, and 0.15 from the pig farm, respectively. The allele frequencies with A were 0.06, 0.20, and 0.23 of the supermarket pigs, the traditional market pigs, and the pig farms, respectively. The sequence contains 4 SNPs located at positions 15036 (T/C), 15038 (G/A), 15045 (C/T), and 15046 (G/A) of the pig mtDNA, and the European (E = TGCG) and Asian (A = CATA) haplotypes are combined. The originality of swine breeds was determined by conducting a joint analysis of the mitochondrial Cytb gene in 27 black pigs collected from supermarkets, revealing that 19 samples contained the European genotype and 8 samples contained the Asian haplotypes. In addition, 46 and 28 pigs obtained from traditional markets contained the European and Asian haplotypes, respectively, whereas 19 and 7 pigs obtained from pig farms contained the European and Asian haplotypes, respectively. Furthermore, the sequence contains 3 SNPs located at coding positions c.135 (C/G), c.593 (G/C), and c.637 (G/C) on the SRY gene, and the European (E = CGG) and Chinese haplotypes (C = GGC) were combined. However, an analysis of the SRY haplotype indicated that all 101 samples obtained from supermarkets and traditional markets contained the European haplotype. 6 Of the 8 pigs obtained from pig farms were European. Moreover, one SRY haplotype, which was similar to that of a Taoyuan pig, was observed in 2 samples obtained from a pig farm in Pingtung, Taiwan. The uncommon haplotype was observed in several Chinese and rare European breeds. In conclusion, both the Cytb and SRY genes in pigs may provide insight into the phylogenetic relationships of black pigs, and the PCR-PRLP method can be used to determine the genotypes of black pigs to prevent the production of pigs that are phenotypically reddish brown.
