(1) Horace, Janus, and Pighius' ActaIn PBSR 54 (1986), 213–28 Andrew Lintott dusts down the fragments of the Acta Urbana published by S. V. Pighius in 1615 and universally supposed today to be a forgery. Lintott himself, after a most learned discussion, concurs, but one senses a wistful longing for the fragments to be genuine. The purpose of this note is to offer another reason why sadly this is unlikely.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The excavations at 239 Gallowgate, Glasgow revealed elements of an 18th century pottery works known as the ‘Pighouse’. As well as the corner of the potter's house and workshop, several sections of the flue system, a chimney base and a possible drying shed were revealed, providing indications of the later pottery tenement layout and allowing interpretations to be made about the location of the ‘Pighouse’ kiln. Furthermore, finds from several waster pits located around the pottery structures give some indication of the ceramics being produced. Finally, remnants of other small industries occupying the site during the late 18th century were revealed that provide an indication of the industrial nature of Glasgow's east end.

Abstract:
This chapter contains the Latin text of Article 5, together with a sentence by sentence commentary. This commentary draws upon the six debaters (Bucer, Melanchthon, Pistorius, Gropper, Eck, Pflug), together with Contarini, Calvin, Luther and Pighius. The chapter also compares Article 5 with the Tridentine Decree on Justification. The conclusion asks to what extent Article 5 can be said to retain “the substance of the true doctrine,” from the perspective of either the Protestant or the Catholic party. This flags a number of issues which need to be resolved in the concluding chapter.

Abstract:
This chapter sets out the reactions to Article 5. It starts with contemporary Protestant reactions, focusing especially on Luther, Calvin, and Melanchthon. This section includes an account of all the Protestant objections, which are considered in the remainder of the book. Catholic reactions include Contarini, Eck, Gropper, Pflug, and Pighius, as well as reactions from Rome. The views of Sadolet and (especially) Pole are also considered. The chapter concludes with an account of modern assessments of the article, especially by Protestants. There is a stark contrast between the more positive assessment of Peter Matheson, for example, and the very negative approach of much German scholarship, as with Athena Lexutt.

Abstract:
This chapter places Article 5 in its wider context. First it considers the colloquies prior to Regensburg. Then it describes the Regensburg Colloquy prior to Article 5, focusing especially on the participants in the debates (Bucer, Melanchthon, Pistorius, Gropper, Eck, Pflug), as well as those who were also present at the Diet (Contarini, Pighius, Calvin). The heart of the chapter is an examination of the process leading to the writing of Article 5, so far as can be ascertained from the brief accounts that we have, together with a description of the various earlier drafts, the texts of which are to be found in the Appendix. Finally, there is a brief account of the further progress and dissolution of the colloquy.

Abstract:
This chapter sets out to trace the origin of the idea of double righteousness (duplex iustitia) that underlies Article 5. It examines various versions of duplex iustitia teaching prior to the Regensburg Colloquy, especially that of Luther, Pighius, Gropper, and Bucer. It then traces the approach to the idea after the colloquy, looking especially at Contarini, Gropper, Luther, Bucer, Calvin, and the Tridentine Decree on Justification. It then contrasts double righteousness with double justification. The latter has three distinct meanings. There is the Catholic contrast between the initial justification of the ungodly and the subsequent justification of the godly; there is the idea of the justification of works as well as persons, held by both Protestants and Catholics; there is the idea of the double formal cause of justification, held by Contarini and Gropper. None of these is found in Article 5.

Abstract:
This chapter sets out the ongoing debates over justification in the aftermath of Article 5. From 1541 to 1543 Bucer engaged in a literary controversy over the article with Eck and Pighius. There followed the controversy surrounding the attempted Cologne Reformation, in which Bucer (and to a lesser extent Melanchthon) engaged in a literary exchange with Gropper especially. This involved disputes about the events surrounding Article 5, as well as the theological issues arising from it, such as twofold righteousness and imputed righteousness. Gropper also had to respond to criticisms from the Leuven theology faculty. Gropper continued to hold the ideas he had embraced at Regensburg in the final months of his life. There was a second colloquy of Regensburg, in 1546, also involving Bucer, which involved discussion of Article 5. Finally, the Tridentine Decree on Justification rejected the ideas of twofold righteousness and imputed righteousness.

"cannot be distinguished from odourless air by 50% of the panel members (DT50). This implies that the threshold is a barely detectable odour. The number of times a sample has to be diluted to reach threshold levels is a measure for the relative strength of the odour. The relative odour strength times the ventilation rate of the building results in the odour emission. This can be regarded as the total odour load per unit of time leaving the building. Finally the odour emission can be used in atmospheric dispersion models in order to calculate the odour threshold distance. Table 2 shows the results of the experiments as well as the relevant data of the pighouses at the time of sampling. During the measurements the ventilation rate between the pighouses varied. The difference are due to different ventilation rates and due to sampling in the morning or in the afternoon at different ambient temperatures. "Table 1: Average composition of faeces and urine after separation by a filter net (0.78x0.78) Faeces Urine Dry matter (%) 32.50 1.92 Crude ash of dry matter 25.70 63.10 N-Kj (%) 1.24 0.34 NH -N 34 0.35 (%) 1.64 0.05 K20 85 0.62 CaO 45 0.04 MgO 48 0.02 Cu ppm 197 2.50 pH 9.1 From Table 1 it is evident that the percentages of the minerals in the faeces are high. In the urine the percentages are much lower except potassium. By manuring grassland potassium is the limiting factor, while o.n arable land the quantity of nitrogen needs to be taken into account. In applying solid manure to cropland the Cu-content needs to be taken into account. Depending on the Cu-status of the soil, 0-6 kg Cu/ha is advised. By fertilizing with 10 t/ha of solid manure about 3 kg Cu/ha is administered Because only a small amount of copper is taken up by plant growth and lost through drainage, the application of solid manure needs to be spread out over a few years if Cu is not to accumulate in the soil. 5.2 Odour_emissions It can be concluded that separation and removal of urine and faeces from piggery result in a reduced formation of odour components (5). This might result in a decrease of the precieved odour as compared with a housing system with underslat slurry storage. In order to obtain a reliable figure for the actual odour reduction, measurements have been carried out. Samples of ventilation air from a pighouse with underslat slurry storage as well as a pighouse with filter nets were taken on a number of different occasions. All samples were collected in bags made from FEP-Teflon. Odour experiments were performed the following day using a dilution apparatus (olfactometer) and a group of observers (panel). Since the establishment of the odour intensity is a time consuming affair, it has become practice in Dutch agricultural odour research to concentrate on the establishment of the odour treshold (6). The odour treshold is defined as that dilution of odorous air which." In Odour Prevention and Control of Organic Sludge and Livestock Farming.
