Abstract:
This study was divided into two main sections; an examination the performance of the Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) and attempts to use the imaging spectrometer to estimate foliar biochemical contents over an area of forest. To examine instrument performance the SNR required to estimate foliar biochemical contents from reflectance data was estimated by using laboratory reflectance spectra of vegetation and random noise. A number of methods were used to estimate the SNR of the AVIRIS based on estimates of noise from the instrument and the data. It was concluded that whi

Protein-bound and free lysine contributed to the total lysine content of maize endosperm, and both of these can be significantly increased by the opaque-2 (o2) mutation. Elongation factor 1A is one of the lysine-rich proteins increased in o2 mutants, and its concentration is highly correlated with the protein-bound lysine content of the endosperm. However, the biological basis of this correlation is unknown. The mechanism by which the free amino acid content, including free lysine, is increased by the o2 mutation is also poorly understood. Understanding the biological basis of these traits co

Abstract:
The relatively high level of palmitic acid (22 mol%) in cottonseeds may be due in part to the activity of a palmitoyl-acyl carrier protein (ACP) thioesterase (PATE). In embryo extracts, PATE activity was highest at the maximum rate of reserve accumulation (oil and protein). The cotton FatB mRNA transcript abundance also peaked during this developmental stage, paralleling the profiles of PATE enzyme activity and seed oil accumulation. A cotton FatB cDNA clone was isolated by screening a cDNA library with a heterologous Arabidopsis FatB probe (Pirtle et al., 1999, Plant and Cell Physiology 40

Due to this significant decline in population numbers, a study was conducted to develop a diet for propagating this endangered species under captive conditions. Oyster mussel juveniles were collected from several sites on the Clinch River and sacrificed for gut content and biochemical composition analyses in summer. Nitrogen availability in agricultural soils from fertilizer, plant residue inputs, and soil organic matter has important implications beyond crop yield. Legume winter cover crops and one fourth the recommended N rate on sweet corn resulted in yields equivalent to those at the recommended rate in the Willamette Valley of western Oregon. Cereal rye winter crops absorbed an average of 40 kg N/ha that otherwise would have been leached, but did not effectively replace fertilizer N. Cereal rye as a cover crop therefore shows an ability to immobilize N from fertilizer. This was further confirmed in a
