Abstract:
The subject around which the contributions in this volume gravitate is the creation of a higher institute of engineering studies in Florence in the late nineteenth-century. On the eve of the unification of Italy, Florence was a promising centre for a Polytechnic, in view of the experience of the Corpo di Ingegneri di Acque e Strade, the precocious railway building, the importance of the mining sector and the solidity of the Istituto Tecnico Toscano. Despite this, unlike what took place in Milan and in Turin, the Istituto Tecnico Toscano was not transformed into a Polytechnic for the training of engineers. The reasons for this non-development can be traced to the lack of "industrialist" propensities in the managerial group that emerged victorious from the "peaceful revolution" of 1859, to a desire for independence from the national academic system built on the Casati law, and to a local demand for engineering skills that was less dynamic than expected. Consequently, the prevailing winds were those of "normalisation" blowing from the government, the universities and the most prestigious Colleges of Engineers. Nevertheless, Florence continued to represent an important technological centre, especially in relation to railway infrastructures, public works, and the mechanical engineering industries (for example Pignone and Galileo). In the end it was not until one hundred years after unification that the city finally became the seat of a Faculty of Engineering.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the industrial spy, who represented the negative case for the auto workers' notions of exemplary manhood, of real union manhood, and of the manhood of the fighter for unionism or the breadwinner of a family. These industrial mercenaries included many individualistic and anti-labor figures—union supporters called them rats, stool pigeons, finks, sluggers, thugs, goons, scabs, and strikebreakers. They were the union movement's negative examples that separated the honorable and respectable manhood of union men from the dishonorable and disreputable spies and thugs. Often violent men from the underside of urban America, these mercenaries of the class war spent several decades battling industrial unionism.

Abstract:
Possibly the most successful urban birds, pigeons and doves in the Order Columbiformes are one of the most easily recognised groups. They are an ancient and very successful group with an almost worldwide distribution and are most strongly represented in tropical and subtropical regions, including Australia. In most species simple plumage patterns feature mainly grey and brown with black, white or dull reddish markings, but the highly colourful fruit-doves include some of the most beautiful of all birds. From dense rainforests of north Queensland, where brilliantly plumaged Superb Fruit-Doves Ptilinopus superbus are heard more easily than seen, to cold, windswept heathlands of Tasmania, where Brush Bronzewings Phaps elegans are locally common, most regions of Australia are frequented by one or more species. For more than a century after arrival of the First Fleet, interest in these birds focused on the eating qualities of larger species. In addition to contributing to declines of local populations in some parts of Australia, excessive hunting brought about the extinction of two species on Lord Howe Island and another species on Norfolk Island. In Pigeons and Doves in Australia, Joseph Forshaw and William Cooper have summarised our current knowledge of all species, including those occurring on Christmas, Norfolk and Lord Howe Islands, and with superb artwork have given readers a visual appreciation of the birds in their natural habitats. Historical accounts of extinct species are also included. Detailed information on management practices for all species is presented, ensuring that Pigeons and Doves in Australia will become the standard reference work on these birds for ornithologists and aviculturists. Abstract:
This chapter reveals a central feature of liability by showing the divergence of the outcomes of exchange governed by corrective justice from systemically efficient allocation of resources, and discusses the role of norms in liability systems. The modern economic approach to externality is traced to Pigou, whose normative objective of allocating all resources efficiently across an entire system has been almost universally adopted by contemporary economists. When the actual imposition of a liability price is uncertain, Pigou prescribes probability scaling, increasing the liability price imposed on tortfeasors who do pay far beyond the costs of their torts to create incentives for efficient cost imposition in the future, but this is shown to conflict with corrective justice, with the consequence that far more than the systemically efficient number of torts are committed. Deontological norms against cost imposition are illustrated and identified as a practical bulwark of the liability system.
