Abstract:
Readers of Chaucer become accustomed to his self-deprecating humor. In one famous example, the character of Chaucer the Canterbury pilgrim begins telling the tale of a knight named Sir Thopas who tries to rescue the elf queen. He uses such complicated verse forms that the host tells him to stop the “rym doggerel” and to “telle in prose somewhat.” Chaucer the poet thus shows his virtuosity and his humanity. The host is not an uncultured boor, as some early critics said; however, the pilgrim does not speak as Chaucer himself would have done on such an occasion.

Abstract:
AbstractAugusta Browne Garrett composed at least two hundred piano pieces, songs, duets, hymns, and sacred settings between her birth in Dublin, Ireland, around 1820, and her death in Washington, D.C., in 1882. Judith Tick celebrated Browne as the “most prolific woman composer in America before 1870” in her landmark study American Women Composers before 1870. Browne, however, cast an enduring shadow as an author as well, publishing two books, a dozen poems, several Protestant morality tracts, and more than sixty music essays, nonfiction pieces, and short stories. By means of her prose publications, Augusta Browne “put herself into the text—as into the world, into history—by her own movement,” as feminist writer Hélène Cixous urged of women a century later. Browne maintained a presence in the periodical press for four decades in a literary career that spanned music journalism, memoir, humor, fiction, poetry, and Christian devotional literature, but one essay, “The Music of America” (1845), generated attention through the twentieth century. With much of her work now easily available in digitized sources, Browne's life can be recovered, her music experienced, and her prose reassessed, which taken together yield a rich picture of the struggles, successes, and opinions of a singular participant and witness in American music of her era.

Abstract:
Purpose. Based on the analysis of the current state of production of pipes at the Pilger plant 5-12, PJSC Interpipe NTZ proposed new technological solutions for its modernization to expand the size and brand range of pipes produced, reduce metal consumption by improving the accuracy of pipes, ensuring energy savings by reducing natural gas and others Methodology. Selection of representative data of pipe production processes on Pilger installations operated in Ukraine and abroad from scientific and patent sources. Solving problems on the choice of optimal resource and energy-saving technological schemes for the production of pipes at TPA 5-12ʺ PJSC Interpipe NTZ at the expense of new technological schemes and equipment modernization. Findings. The article presents the results of the analysis of the state of production of pipes for injection molding machines with pilgrim mills in the modern conditions of globalization of the world economy, which requires the modernization and reconstruction of these injection molding machines to ensure competitiveness on the world market. New technological and technical solutions for the modernization of TPA 5-12, PJSC Interpipe NTZ, have been developed to expand the range and increase the diameter of the pipes to 465 mm or more from carbon, alloyed and hard-to-deform steel grades. Originality. Expanded ideas about the formation of a thin-wall with the firmware NLZ in the glass on a horizontal hydraulic press 20MN and when rolling the glass on the mill-elongator. The mechanism of formation and correction of the different wall thickness in the system of the piercing press – mill-elongator is specified and the ways of reducing the wall thickness of the sleeves and pipes are outlined. Practical value. The new technological and technical solutions developed in the article can be used for the modernization and reconstruction of Pilger plants, including TPA 5-12ʺ PJSC Interpipe NTZ, which will increase their competitiveness by expanding the size and grade of pipes, reduce metal consumption, by increasing the accuracy and reducing waste, and also provide energy savings by reducing the consumption of natural gas for heating the roll for some pipe mix. Keywords: pipe, liner, piercing press, millelongator, pilgrim installation, varnished, energy-saving, modernization, descaling.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the activities of the Pilgrims Society against the backdrop of official international relations in the immediate post-war years, in particular during the presidency of Warren Harding. It analyses the Pilgrims Society’s role in many of the most pressing issues in the Anglo-American relationship, for example the US refusing to join the League of Nations, the war debt question, and naval disarmament. It focuses on a banquet held in London in 1921 for the US Ambassador George Harvey, whose remarks at the event about the League of Nations caused controversy and resulted in significant levels of press coverage. This chapter also looks at the growing anti-Britishness in the US in this period and examines how this impacted upon the Pilgrims Society. The chapter ultimately establishes that the Pilgrims Society consolidated its position as a semi-official public diplomacy actor while at the same time coming under increasing public scrutiny.
