Abstract:
The objective of this study was to construct a finite element (FE) model of table tennis rubber (Sandwich rubber) with pimples structure, which can accurately estimate the rebound behavior of the ball at impact, and to investigate effects of its structure on ball rebound behavior. The sandwich rubber is composed of a combination of a rubber and foam layers. The FE model of the sandwich rubber was constructed with non-linearity, strain rate dependency, and energy absorption which were expressed based on the results of material tests. Impact analyses were conducted using the developed model of sandwich rubber and ball with different pimple heights. The simulation results of rebound behavior do not tend to be proportional to the pimple height. The trend of the rebound behavior was mainly affected by the amount of impulse during impact calculated using the horizontal component of the contact force which was varied with changes in pimple height.

Abstract:
The increasing prevalence of acne and pimples has increased the demand for natural and effective treatments. Herbal-based pimple and acne patches represent an innovative skincare approach, combining plant-derived ingredients' therapeutic benefits with modern patch technology. These patches are designed to target acne lesions, reduce inflammation, and promote faster healing without the harsh side effects often associated with conventional treatments. Common herbal ingredients used in these patches include tea tree oil, witch hazel, aloe vera, and calendula, which are known for their anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and skin-soothing properties. The patch’s design allows for the sustained delivery of these active ingredients directly to the affected area, minimizing irritation while ensuring targeted treatment. Furthermore, these patches offer a discreet, convenient, and non-invasive alternative to oral or topical acne treatments. This abstract explores the formulation, efficacy, and potential benefits of herbal pimple and acne patches, providing insight into their role in achieving clear, healthy skin.

Abstract:
Pimples can, when they appear, claim much more space in life than just the spots in the face. For the one who is badly affected, pimples become central for the way in which the person acts, feels and experiences the world. The many hours in front of the mirror is a socialisation into a stigmatised identity where the critical gaze of others and a feeling of shame are constantly present. The affected ones go to any length to take control over body, skin, face and looks. If different cures or heavy makeup is not enough, all kinds of body micro-practices are set to work: using one's hair or hands to cover up or avoiding bright lights. As an acne person one experiences the world through the pimples, sensitizing oneself to situations, norms and the cultural interpretations of others.

Sigalet, Geoffrey. "Pimps, pupils and philosophers: Aristotle's politics of shame." Thesis, McGill University, 2011. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=104862.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract: This essay seeks to (i) demonstrate Aristotle's philosophical view of shame, and (ii) explore the role of this view of shame in Aristotle's view of how we learn to be good, the relation between students and teachers, the relation of the philosopher to society, and Aristotle's own relationship to post-imperial democratic Athens. In part (i) of this essay I shall argue that Aristotle divides shame into different types according to its affective and cognitive qualities and referents: these being (1) Learner-True shame: occurrent and true; (2) Learner-Common shame: occurrent and doxastic (relating to doxa and nomos); (3) Mature-True shame: conditionally dispositional and true; (4) Mature-Common shame: conditionally dispositional and doxastic but false. In part (ii-α)I shall also argue that shame impact our actions in deliberation by pushing us away from what is commonly shameful, and in changing our views (both as the subjects and participants) in intersubjective shaming situations such as that which informs the very inquiry of the Nicomachean Ethics. I argue that Aristotle must look to what is commonly shameful in order to be understood by his audience, avoid being persecuted, and to effectively inquire and shame his audience. In part (ii-β) I argue that we come to feel shame by habituation and mimetic activity and that most subjects move from shame types (2) to (1) to (3) if they are born into a city with virtuous laws and allow themselves to be pushed in the right direction. Subjects pushed in the opposite direction will usually start from false type (2) and move to type (4). In part (iii) I summarize the above arguments and suggest that Aristotle's own approach to shame is what might be call "Aristotelian Respectful Shame" which involves looking to what is commonly shameful because of and in the interest of discovering what is truly shameful.

Hawkes-Frost, Caitlin. "Pimps, Predators and Business Managers: Constructing the 'Procurer' in Ontario Courts." Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/30389.

Full text
Abstract:
The concept of the ‘procurer’ comes from section 212 of Canada’s Criminal Code, which prohibits directing, enticing, assisting or profiting off the prostitution of another person. A contentious debate surrounds Canada’s prostitution laws, with a constitutional challenge currently before the Supreme Court. Within this climate of debate, the concept of the ‘procurer’ has moved out of the strictly legal sphere and into a broader discourse, with a range of parties laying their claims to truth on the “realities” of the industry generally and on the procurer specifically. Using a methodology of Foucauldian discourse analysis, this thesis examines Ontario Provincial Court case summaries to consider the contribution of the Canadian judiciary to discourse on the procurer. Findings suggest that the judiciary replicates many of the existing stereotypes of prostitution and its participants, such as the procurer as pimp, while (re)producing a small counter discourse of the procurer as business manager.

Full text
Abstract:
<p>This study aimed to characterize the impact of treatment infrastructure upgrades on the occurrence of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) discharged by a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent and their subsequent effects on fish endocrine function. This site has been evaluated before and after two major upgrades in wastewater treatment infrastructure, which were implemented in 2007 and 2012. Our study assessed the potential impacts on the Boulder Creek receiving water, as well as identified and evaluated the extent of estrogenic endocrine disruption in the native fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) that may be occurring after the implementation of the 2012 upgrade. We conducted an integrative, 8-week, on-site, continuous-flow, exposure experiment using adult male fathead minnows to assess in vivo estrogenicity of the WWTP effluent water, relative to reference water and results from prior years (both pre- and post-upgrade). We collected data for a wide array of biological endpoints. Results for plasma vitellogenin concentrations and sperm development were emphasized. It was found that in vivo effluent estrogenicity following the 2012 upgrade was insignificant in comparison to pre-upgrade levels. However, the occurrence of an extreme flood event in the Boulder area resulted in the detection of some significant effluent estrogenicity, indicating that such conditions may impact the ability of WWTPs to effectively remove estrogenic EDCs from the effluent.

Abstract:
The inclusion of roughness elements on the target surface of a turbine aerofoil impingement cooling system is an attractive means of heat transfer enhancement. In such a system, it is important to minimise additional pressure loss caused by the roughness elements and thus their shape, size and position need to be optimised. The research showed how heat transfer enhancement is normally achieved at the expense of extra pressure loss. A hexagonal roughness element designed by the authors showed up to 10% heat transfer enhancement with minimal extra pressure loss. The present work includes shear pattern visualisation on the target surface, pressure loss measurements and heat transfer coefficient measurements for an impingement cooling system with simply shaped roughness elements-specifically cylindrical &amp; diamond pimples. Flow visualisation results and pressure loss measurements for the above configurations provided criteria for selecting the shape, size and position of the roughness elements. The detailed heat transfer measurements on the target surface and over the roughness elements were used to explain the heat transfer enhancement mechanisms. It was found that the largest contribution to heat transfer is the impingement stagnation point and the developing wall jet regions. However, the research showed that the low heat transfer coefficient region could be made to contribute more by using strategically located roughness elements. A hexagonal rim was designed to cover the complete low heat transfer coefficient region midway between neighbouring jets. The effect of the height, cross sectional shape and wall angle of the hexagonal rim were studied using a series of heat transfer and pressure loss experiments. The transient heat transfer tests were conducted using a triple thermochromic liquid crystal technique and the thermal transient was produced by a fine wire mesh heater. The heat transfer coefficient over the pimples was measured using a hybrid transient method that analysed the thermal transient of the copper pimple. The detailed heat transfer coefficient distributions over the complete area of the target surface provided comprehensive understanding of the performance of the hexagonal rim. Tests were conducted at three different mass flow rates for each configuration. The average and local jet Reynolds numbers varied between 21500 and 31500, and 17000 and 41000 respectively.

Abstract:
Heat transfer in annuli has been widely investigated over the years. Annular channels are found in multiple industry applications, ranging from electronic equipment to nuclear reactor cooling. In order to enhance heat transfer, internal passages are augmented with roughness elements such as dimples, pimples, ribs, fins, and other features. However, the use of impingement cooling mechanism has not been utilized for such annular channels. An experimental study of impingement cooling within an annulus with the outer surface of the annulus being heated uniformly is conducted. Multiple flows as a function of Jet Reynolds number in the range of 16,000 to 46,000 are fundamentally examined. An impingement sleeve with an annular ratio of 0.92 was experimentally tested and compared to RANS numerical simulation results. Temperature Sensitive Paint (TSP) was utilized to experimentally obtain the local Heat Transfer distribution along the annular wall and close channel cap, which is normalized by the baseline annulus heat transfer distribution. Heat transfer results for the annular surface is compared with available correlations. Pressure drop across the facility is characterized at the inlet and exit of the experimental set up.

Abstract:
Abstract The objective of the present study is the evaluation of the heat transfer difference between a novel jet plate configuration and a conventional flat jet orifice plate. Physical mechanisms that lead to a change in Nusselt number when comparing both configurations are discussed in two regions: impingement and crossflow. In the presented work, both plates with identical inline arrays of (20 × 26) circular air jets impinging orthogonally on a flat target comprised of 20 segments parallel to the jet orifice plates, are studied. The first is a staggered configuration of a pimple-dimple (convex-concave) plate. This plate features two jet diameters: (a) 4.63 mm emanating from negative sphere of 14.63 mm in radius inward imprint; (b) 2.19 mm emanating from a positive sphere of 17.07 mm in radius, protruding from the base of the plate. The second jet plate is flat, which serves as a baseline for the heat transfer study. This plate has a constant jet orifice diameters of 3.49 mm, found based on the definition of total average open area of the first plate (NPR configuration). Heat transfer characteristics and turbulent flow structures are investigated over jet-averaged Reynolds numbers (Reav,j) of 5,000, 7,000, and 9,000. Jet-to-plate distance (Z/Dj) is varied between (2.4 – 6.0) jet diameters. A numerical study is carried out to compare various turbulence models (κε-EB, κε-Lag EB, κε-v2f, κω-SST, RST). Numerical simulations are analyzed in detail to explain the underlying mechanism of heat transfer enhancement, related to such geometries. The convex-concaved plate yields lower globally-averaged heat transfer coefficients when compared to a flat jet plate in the impingement region. However, enhancement up to 23% is seen in the crossflow region, where the crossflow effects are dominant in a maximum-crossflow configuration.

Abstract:
Abstract Water entry of a rigid hemisphere is simulated using the unsteady incompressible Reynolds-Average Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and volume of fluid (VOF) method, which are implemented in the open-source library OpenFoam. The solver InterDyMFoam is applied and the algorithm PIMPLE which is a combination of PISO (Pressure Implicit with Splitting of Operators) and SIMPLE (Semi-Implicit Method for pressure-Linked Equations) algorithms are used in the simulations. A second-order backward difference scheme is applied for the temporal discretization. A convergence and uncertainty study is performed considering different resolutions and constant Courant number (CFL) using the procedures recommended by ITTC. The comparisons of slamming loads and motions between the CFD simulations are presented using both laminar and turbulence fluid models for the hemisphere entering the water at various speeds. Turbulence is modelled with a Reynolds averaged stress (RAS) k-ω two-equation model. The turbulence effects on the slamming loads will be assessed for the case with different entry velocities.

Abstract:
This paper studies how the hydrodynamics coefficients of added mass and damping varies when an oscillating disk approaches a seabed. Analysis was performed by OpenFOAM code using the ‘PIMPLE’ algorithm. The simulations considered the flow as laminar and hence no turbulence model was used. Simulations were conducted for a solid disk of 200 mm diameter, 2 mm thick, oscillating at amplitudes varying from 1–48 mm and elevation ‘h’ of the disk from the seabed varying from 0.2–2 times the disk radius. The geometry and parameters used here were the same as that of Wadhwa et al. (2010) [1] and Vu et al. (2008) [2]. The forces on the disk were calculated using a Tool for post-processing force/lift/drag data with function tool available in OpenFOAM. The motions of the disk were restricted to axial (heave) direction. The calculated forces and displacement were analyzed using a Fourier projection to separate the added mass and damping effects. Numerical results were compared with the experiments conducted by Wadhwa et al. (2010) [1] with a sandy bottom. Results show that the added mass and damping increase monotonically with the Keulegan-Carpenter number (KC) up to a critical value, beyond which the behavior becomes random. The critical KC increases linearly with increasing distance from the seabed. The hydrodynamic problem has important applications in structures such as foundation templates and subsea structures oscillating in proximity to the seabed. The computations show vortex lines of the flow, and the influence of the seabed on the flow around the structure.

Abstract:
The oak processionary moth (Thaumetopoea processionea&gt;) is native to Central and Southern Europe and has been spreading to Northern Europe, including Southern England since 2006. The larvae feed on various oak species (Quercus spp.), contributing to oak decline and causing significant health issues for humans and pets due to their urticating hairs. There is no history of classical biological control for this pest, but several promising natural enemies exist. The most promising natural enemies include the larval parasitoids Carcelia iliaca and Pales processioneae, which are specific to Thaumetopoea spp. and have been dominant in Germany and the Netherlands, with C. iliaca also found in invasive UK populations. The egg parasitoid Ooencyrtus masii is noted in Italy but seems less significant than other polyphagous species, such as Anastatus bifasciatus and Trichogramma spp. Pimpla processioneae and other Pimpla species are frequently found parasitizing pupae, with P. processioneae being the most specific. Other natural enemies such as A. bifasciatus, the larval parasitoid Meteorus versicolor, and various tachinid parasitoids are abundant but too polyphagous for classical biological control programs.

Abstract:
This case study traces the journey of Youth for Unity and Voluntary Action (YUVA), an NGO which was co-founded in Mumbai (erstwhile Bombay) in 1984 by a young graduate Minar Pimple along with a group of his lecturers and peers from the Nirmala Niketan College of Social Work, together looking to evolve an indigenous model of social work practice. To say that times have changed in India since YUVA’s inception 38 years ago would be an understatement. Despite this, the organization’s spirit continues to echo its founding purpose and values, and provide a space in which the most marginalised of young and like-minded people can come together, understand their rights and responsibilities as citizens, and work together towards shared ideals. Even today, the majority of the people who work with YUVA (meaning “youth”) come from marginalised backgrounds. Such talent composition is not the norm, even in civil society. Seeded with feminist ideals—in particular that of nurturing a careful and life-long sensitivity for the socio-politically marginalised, and standing by them in their strive for social justice—YUVA’s historical record is a statement of how a steadfast commitment to principles can eventually find home in a settled and satisfying practice. This case study lays out both what that historical record speaks and what it speaks between the lines. What the record directly speaks of is the radical milieu in which YUVA came into being, how it became a significant civil society presence in its own right, how it multiplied new initiatives, and how it underwent a difficult leadership transition and financial stresses, yet strived hard to remain relevant. Between the lines, the record hints at how an alert, attuned and active academic milieu constitutes a real treasure—a reminder that perhaps seems appropriate for the times; and narrates the story of how a feminist organization deeply committed to social justice operates from the inside, of the people who make it and how they make and remake it. organizations of this nature have an important place in the annals of Indian civil society but have not received a proportionate space within the documented field of organizational development and talent management. This case study provides an opportunity for learners to explore the idea, relevance and practices of a feminist organization, through the travails and triumphs of one of the oldest ones in India.

Unknown, Author. WINMOP-R03 Performance of Offshore Pipelines. Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), 2003. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0011744.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of the project was to validate existing pipeline integrity prediction models through field testing multiple pipelines, validate the performance of in-line instrumentation through smart pig runs, and finally, to assess the actual integrity of aging damaged and defective pipelines. The objectives were accomplished by the testing of aging out-of-service lines using "smart pigs", followed by hydrotesting of the lines to failure, recovery of the failed sections, and determination of the pipeline characteristics in the vicinity of the failed sections (failure analysis). One objective of the project was to validate the dented, gouged, and corroded pipeline burst strength prediction models currently in existence, such as ASME B31-G, R-Streng, and DNV 99 for pipelines. Another model was being developed as a joint international project sponsored by the U. S. Minerals Management Service, Petroleos Mexicanos (PEMEX), and Instituto Mexicano del Petroleo (IMP) titled RAM PIPE REQUAL and an associated JIP identified as PIMPIS (Pipeline Inspection, Maintenance, and Performance Information System), this would be tested and validated as well. The validation was provided by hydrotesting in-situ pipelines to failure. Sustained and rapidly applied hydro-pressures were used to investigate the effects of delayed and dynamic pressure related failures. After testing, the pipelines were scheduled for decommissioning; with the failed sections located, and brought to the laboratory for testing and analysis. Class A predictions were made before the pipelines were hydrotested to failure based on results from in-line instrumentation (instrumented) and from knowledge of the pipeline products and other characteristics (not instrumented). Based on the results from the testing, the analytical models were to be revised to provide improved agreement between the measured and predicted burst pressures. Since the pipelines were inspected with smart pigs before the hydro-tests, it was possible to compare the smart-pig data gathered during pig runs to the actual condition of the pipeline. This was accomplished by recovering sections of the pipeline that were identified by the pig as having pits or metal-loss areas. Reviewed pipeline decommissioning inventory and selected a pipeline candidate. The specific scope of work included: Selected pipelines for testing. Conducted field tests with an instrumented pig to determine pipeline denting, gouging and corrosion conditions. Used existing analytical models to determine burst strength for both instrumented and non-instrumented pipelines. Hydrotested the selected pipelines to failure (sustained and rapidly applied pressures). Located and retrieve failed sections and other sections identified as problem spots by the "smart-pig." Compared "smart pig" data to actual pipeline condition. Analyzed the failed sections to determine their physical and material characteristics. Revised the analytical models to provide improved agreements between predicted and measured burst pressures.
