Sigalet, Geoffrey. "Pimps, pupils and philosophers: Aristotle's politics of shame." Thesis, McGill University, 2011. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=104862.

Abstract:
Abstract: This essay seeks to (i) demonstrate Aristotle's philosophical view of shame, and (ii) explore the role of this view of shame in Aristotle's view of how we learn to be good, the relation between students and teachers, the relation of the philosopher to society, and Aristotle's own relationship to post-imperial democratic Athens. In part (i) of this essay I shall argue that Aristotle divides shame into different types according to its affective and cognitive qualities and referents: these being (1) Learner-True shame: occurrent and true; (2) Learner-Common shame: occurrent and doxastic (relating to doxa and nomos); (3) Mature-True shame: conditionally dispositional and true; (4) Mature-Common shame: conditionally dispositional and doxastic but false. In part (ii-α)I shall also argue that shame impact our actions in deliberation by pushing us away from what is commonly shameful, and in changing our views (both as the subjects and participants) in intersubjective shaming situations such as that which informs the very inquiry of the Nicomachean Ethics. I argue that Aristotle must look to what is commonly shameful in order to be understood by his audience, avoid being persecuted, and to effectively inquire and shame his audience. In part (ii-β) I argue that we come to feel shame by habituation and mimetic activity and that most subjects move from shame types (2) to (1) to (3) if they are born into a city with virtuous laws and allow themselves to be pushed in the right direction. Subjects pushed in the opposite direction will usually start from false type (2) and move to type (4). In part (iii) I summarize the above arguments and suggest that Aristotle's own approach to shame is what might be call "Aristotelian Respectful Shame" which involves looking to what is commonly shameful because of and in the interest of discovering what is truly shameful.

Abstract:
Television is something that is a part of the everyday lives of a majority of people in America. The content of what is on television can vary in nature from being positive to being negative. However, what people are exposed to through music videos, in particular, a very popular form of artistic expression, has not been thoroughly investigated. This study uses structural ritualization affect, gender schema theory, media and audience power theories, cultivation theory, agenda setting and framing theories, and (cognitive) social learning theory in order to investigate what people are actually exposed to by watching music videos, in particular, MTV, BET, and GAC.

Abstract:
The thesis aims to show the match between Czech and Brazilian culture through the analize and comparison between forms of puppet theater Recife Pernambuco Brazil Czech puppet named mamulengo and folkloric. With different histories and influences the two theaters have characteristics very peculiar and remarkable characters. The encounter between these cultures is also the moment in which I developed a work of dolls in Brazil and now in the Czech Republic. As the construction and form of the theater thinking changed in those three years in a master working with my tutor in Pert Matasek DAMU. My experiences in various festivals and workshops and livings with groups like Bread and Puppets are narrated in the thesis. All this result and the detailed design and conclusion will be focused in this work. This thesis and that time devoted to this research were largely devoted to research and practice of puppet making and improving my language as puppeteer. To continue living and developing projects in Europe makes me transmute into a third dimension, or Brazilian or Czech but a gathering of schools and ways of thinking. Hawkes-Frost, Caitlin. "Pimps, Predators and Business Managers: Constructing the 'Procurer' in Ontario Courts." Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/30389.

Full text
Abstract:
The concept of the ‘procurer’ comes from section 212 of Canada’s Criminal Code, which prohibits directing, enticing, assisting or profiting off the prostitution of another person. A contentious debate surrounds Canada’s prostitution laws, with a constitutional challenge currently before the Supreme Court. Within this climate of debate, the concept of the ‘procurer’ has moved out of the strictly legal sphere and into a broader discourse, with a range of parties laying their claims to truth on the “realities” of the industry generally and on the procurer specifically. Using a methodology of Foucauldian discourse analysis, this thesis examines Ontario Provincial Court case summaries to consider the contribution of the Canadian judiciary to discourse on the procurer. Findings suggest that the judiciary replicates many of the existing stereotypes of prostitution and its participants, such as the procurer as pimp, while (re)producing a small counter discourse of the procurer as business manager.

Baroffio, Angelina Free. "Endocrine disruption in the fathead minnow (Pimphales promelas) following a series of upgrades to a wastewater treatment facility." Thesis, University of Colorado at Denver, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1605078.

Full text
Abstract:
<p>This study aimed to characterize the impact of treatment infrastructure upgrades on the occurrence of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) discharged by a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent and their subsequent effects on fish endocrine function. This site has been evaluated before and after two major upgrades in wastewater treatment infrastructure, which were implemented in 2007 and 2012. Our study assessed the potential impacts on the Boulder Creek receiving water, as well as identified and evaluated the extent of estrogenic endocrine disruption in the native fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) that may be occurring after the implementation of the 2012 upgrade. We conducted an integrative, 8-week, on-site, continuous-flow, exposure experiment using adult male fathead minnows to assess in vivo estrogenicity of the WWTP effluent water, relative to reference water and results from prior years (both pre- and post-upgrade). We collected data for a wide array of biological endpoints. Results for plasma vitellogenin concentrations and sperm development were emphasized. It was found that in vivo effluent estrogenicity following the 2012 upgrade was insignificant in comparison to pre-upgrade levels. However, the occurrence of an extreme flood event in the Boulder area resulted in the detection of some significant effluent estrogenicity, indicating that such conditions may impact the ability of WWTPs to effectively remove estrogenic EDCs from the effluent.

Davis, Holly Rebecca. "Pimpin' ain't easy? : the lives of pimps involved in street prostitution in the United States of America." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/14175.

Full text
Abstract:
The pimp serves as an iconic ghetto hero who stands in street cultures as a figure that represents defiance, anti-establishment angst, and victorious criminality (Funches & Marriott 2002; Horton-Stallings, 2003). The American pimp has been brought into mainstream American culture through 1960’s literature, 1970’s Blaxploitation films, 1980’s hip hop and more recently, documentaries, films, books, music and television. The word ‘pimp’ has found its way into mainstream usage and popular caricatures of the pimp can be found in everything from Halloween costumes to ‘pimp and ho’ themed college parties. Despite being highly visible within mainstream culture, this character is still enigmatic as pimps are an underresearched population. Thus this thesis aims to uncover and unveil the lives and experiences of pimps involved in illegal prostitution to produce a more panoramic understanding of prostitution and an unexplored segment of major players within it. This thesis investigates the experiences and narratives of pimps involved in illegal, predominately street, prostitution in the USA. This research project stands to offer in-depth insight into the experiences of pimps in the United States within this unique subcultural context. In order to fill that literature gap, this research interviewed pimps and gathered data that explored how and why individuals become pimps, their personal histories, how they maintain their position as pimps, how pimps pimp, and the motivations for exit and/or retirement from The Game (the world of prostitution and pimping). More than just a managerial position, the role of the pimp also embraces a lifestyle with special rules, fashions and activities that create a unique and complex underground, criminal community. Rather than just presenting pimps as violent exploiters or ghetto heroes, this thesis examined the language of pimping, their orientation to their roles, the relationship between pimping and the surrounding communities and mainstream society, and explored this criminal career as a social role as well as career. With their childhood experiences of life in American ghettos leading to regular exposure to pimps and favorable impressions of illicit, underground careers, respondents came to ‘choose’ pimping as their career trajectory in their teens. Once dedicated to becoming pimps, many pimps underwent training with older pimps and later gained acceptance within the street community to earn their positions and status as pimps. When established within The Game, they started to practice ‘pimpology’ (pimp ideology) and to firmly establish their skills and methods of pimping. Two substantive chapters within this thesis are dedicated to addressing pimpology: pimpology covers the core processes, social connections and methods of management that are vital for a pimps success and survival in The Game. The aim of these chapters is to explore how pimps function as individuals, with the women who work for them, within their peer networks, and within their communities while they are actively pimping. And finally, exit from pimping will be explored. Issues such as age, exhaustion, family, health, drug addiction, trauma, imprisonment, law enforcement crackdowns and social betrayal all also act as further incentives for pimps to ‘hang up their pimp hat.’ This research has uncovered new themes and trends within the narratives of this hidden, underground subcultural population and offers great insights into the ‘career cycles’ of pimps. This project stands to fill a major gap within prostitution research as current literature lacks the perspectives and voices of pimps themselves. Within this research, a nuanced approach offers a unique view of the pimp and their complex roles and relationships within The Game. As an understudied population, pimps have rarely been the focus of academic inquiry; thus this research stands to contribute new perspectives, insights and data on a population that has remained enigmatic and well hidden from academic exploration for decades.

Andriulli, Raoul. "Development of an OpenFOAM solver for particle migration in the casting process of solid rocket motors." Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2021. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/24352/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis work is the study the solid particles migration phenomenon in concentrated suspension and the development of an OpenFOAM solver able to successfully predict the behaviour of such event. It is, in fact, common knowledge how the solid particles will tend to spread into an heterogeneous arrangement when the fluid is subjected to a non-uniform shear flow. As a consequence, the viscosity field will become uneven as well, giving rise to a non-Newtonian behaviour of the flow. In order to approach the problem, the OpenFOAM transient solver pimpleFoam has been modified, changing the implementation of the equation of motion to make it suitable for a variable viscosity field. Additionally, an iterative cycle for the resolution of the partial differential equation describing the particle migration process has been included in the algorithm. The model chosen to describe the viscosity field is the Krieger’s correlation, which consists of a power law linking the local volume fraction to the dynamic viscosity of the fluid. For the validation of the solver a bidimensional channel flow has been selected; the results of the simulation will be compared to experimental measurements and data provided by a 1D and a 2D finite volume implementations of the model from literature. Following the global trend deduced from the experiment, the distribution profile predicted via OpenFOAM also proved to follow in a quite satisfactory way the results of the 2D model. Subsequently a mesh sensitivity analysis is going to be performed in order to understand how is the solution affected by employing coarser discretizations.

Robinson, Chance. "Spatial Trends and Factors of Pimple Mound Formation in East-Central Texas." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/ETD-TAMU-2012-05-10997.

Full text
Abstract:
Pimple mounds are circular to elliptical domes with basal diameters ranging from 3 to more than 30 m, and heights of 30 cm to more than 2 m above intermound levels. For almost two centuries, the origin of these features has been speculated upon by scientists without general consensus as to one of over 30 different mechanisms suggested for their origin. These soil microfeatures can be observed throughout portions of East Texas as well as Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri. Pimple mounds have been extensively mapped throughout East Texas as complexes covering over 1.0 million ha in 47 soil survey areas. About 600,000 ha are on Pleistocene-age geological formations. This study focused on 5,500 ha in Leon County, Texas, mapped as Rader-Derly complex and Derly-Rader complex. Rader (Aquic Paleustalfs) is on mounds and Derly (Typic Glossaqualfs) in the low intermounds. These soils are mapped primarily on terraces of the Trinity River system within the survey area. Using elevation levels published for the various fluviatile terrace deposits of the Trinity River, six groups (five terrace level groups and an upland group) were identified for analysis of mounds within the study area. Processes and factors of soil formation during the life of these features were considered using two methods ? remotely sensed elevation data and sampling data collected in the field. Size, shape, and relief of mounds were analyzed using airborne-based, remotely sensed LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) elevation data. Particle size distributions and pedon descriptions of mounds formed on materials of various ages were compared across the study area with special emphasis given to spatial trends. Analyses indicate a fluvial origin with pimple mound orientation corresponding to surrounding ridge and swale features of the paleoriver. Pimple mounds within the study area formed in the presence of sandy to loamy alluvial sediments and require the presence of accretionary ridge microtopography over point bar deposits. This alluvial parent material and topography were further developed by fluctuations in climate and vegetation over time. The erosional influence of bioturbation by animals and the intense rainfall and flood events which frequent the study area provided an environment in which these soil microfeatures have developed and over time exhibit increased levels of pedogenesis.
