The diet, habitat use and social organization of pine martens in Scotland was investigated by comparing data from marten populations at high and low density. Correction factors, determined from feeding trials with captive martens, were used to convert frequency of occurrence data, to estimates of the relative weight intake for each prey item in the scat. Spatial orientation and habitat utilization were determined from the radio tracking of 24 martens, 12 from each study area. This study aimed to assess the impact of pine marten (<I>Martes martes</I>) predation on red squirrels (<I>Sciurus vulgaris</I>) in Scotland. Red squirrel density, range use and habitat selection were compared at two study sites: Novar, where pine martens were present, and Learney, where they were absent. At Novar there was a lower density of squirrels than at Learney. The use of iceberg-keel ploughmarks as proxy indicators of past and present iceberg morphology, keel depth and drift direction has seldom been approached in the southern hemisphere. Using high-resolution multi-beam swath bathymetry of the mid-shelf Pine Island Trough and outermost Weddell Sea shelf regions of Antarctica, detailed analysis of >13,000 iceberg-keel ploughmarks was undertaken. By considering the draft of icebergs calved from Antarctica today, calculated from detailed satellite altimetric datasets by this work, almost all observed ploughmarks were interpreted to be relict features.

Deep-water trawling (>200 m deep) for crustaceans in the South West Indian Ocean (SWIO) yields catches of several species, including prawns (Haliporoides triarthrus, Aristaeomorpha foliacea, Aristeus antennatus and Aristeus virilis), langoustine (Metanephrops mozambicus), spiny lobster (Palinurus delagoae) and geryonid crab (Chaceon macphersoni). Infrequent deep-water trawling takes place off Tanzania, Kenya and Madagascar; however, well-established fisheries operate off Mozambique and South Africa.
