Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This research aims to identify which factors influence the technological innovation in micro and small businesses in Brazil, through the analysis of secondary data from the Survey of Technological Innovation (PINTEC 2008), conducted by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) at 16,371 companies in selected industries and services. To that end, we made statistical modeling of micro-data on the sub-sample formed by the 3,092 micro and small businesses surveyed by PINTEC 2008. The analysis of correlations between the variables that influence innovation and four variables that characterize the type and scope of technological innovation – product innovation for the domestic market, product innovation to the world market, process innovation for the domestic market, process innovation for the global market – allowed to select the most significant independent variables in terms of influence on the occurrence of innovation in micro and small enterprises. Based on these same correlations were developed logistic regressions (logit), in which the dependent variables chosen were the four variables characterizing the type and the scope of innovation mentioned above, and the independent variables were selected from those with greater explanatory power on the occurrence of innovation. Precautions have been taken to prevent occurrence of multicollinearity in the regressions. The results of the regressions, examined under the light of the literature review, reveal the importance of the independent variables for the occurrence of innovation in micro and small enterprises, and help in discussions about possible improvements in policies to stimulate technological innovation in micro and small enterprises.

Abstract:
The Rift Valley has long been considered as an ecological barrier until recent discoveries of Mio-Pliocene fossiliferous outcrops in Central Africa: our paleobiogeographical conceptions have to be reappraised. In this context, identification of effective biogeographical barriers preventing dispersals during the Mio-Pliocene may provide a first order constraint in which evolution in Africa could be drawn. The hydrographical network constitutes one of the major constraints to dispersal. Our work aims at reconstructing the hydrographical network during the Neogene. The widespread african catfish genus Synodontis (Mochokidae, Siluriformes) is used as a proxy: its abundance in the fossil record together with an important modern diversity implies a complex history for the African freshwater. So far, the Synodontis species are recognized on soft characters. Here, I propose a study of the bony anatomy of extant Synodontis species from the Nilo-Soudan province and propose specific osteological characters. Those characters are used in the fossil to recognize specimens at a specific level throughout Mio-Pliocene sites of Africa (Chad, Egypt, Tunisia, and Uganda). A molecular phylogeography of Synodontis species is established. To reconstruct history of the group, we combined molecular and osteological analyses. The evolution of the group is structured around the Central African Shear Zone and influenced by the formation of the Rift. The Synodontis origin is Congolese and roots in the Oligocene (~30 Myr). Rapidly, they disperse in the Nilo-Sudan and Lower Guinean provinces. Our results support an ancient drainage system independent from the Nil, extending from West to East Africa and operating during the Middle Miocene. In the Late Miocene, distribution of the Synodontis species appears much more heterogeneous than the modern one. The intensive Plio-Pleistocene exchanges in the Nilo-Sudan province have greatly contributed to homogenize the ichtyofauna and to give the modern pattern of distribution

Abstract:
@Is the theatre of Pinter comic or tragic? The critics are sometimes puzzled. With success, Pinter bowls-over the dominating theatrical tradition, multiplies riddles. The image of labyrinth prevails in his theatre. Nothing in his characters' life is firm, not their physical context, nor their own memory. They feel scared, are crushed by loneliness, time and space. Even in the language they use, one can see that they don't really communicate. Amidst torment and suffering, Pinter's characters refuse the idea of suicide, fight for survival in a violent and arbitrary world that deprives them of all human aspects, reduces them to mere objects. They cheat each other, hide behind a role which is false, shift their ground in relation to each other in order to pursue their own advantages. Pinter is one of the most perceptive and able dramatists to express human tragedy, keeping hs public on the edge of their seats

Full text
Abstract:
Two methods for deforming red blood cell (RBC) are studied. The first method is made of a non focalised dual beam counter-propagating optical stretcher. The stress and forces applied to the cell are described and analysed to compute the resulting deformation. The comparison with experimental result is made and allows to determinate the elasticity of human RBC at (20±2)μNm-1. An original method using no imaging system and allowing to measure the cells deformation by using the fiber-to-fiber coupling is mathematically explained and used to study the feasibility of such an experiment. The other method called oscillating tweezers is built from a high numerical aperture optical tweezers where an acousto-optic modulator allows to discretely changing the focal position at a given frequency. At low frequency, the cell moves from left to right, however at higher frequency, the RBC deform. The origin of the deformation is explained by calculating an approximate stress distribution. Here again, we compare the results with the experimental work. The value of elasticity found for human RBC is between 20uNm-1 and 29uNm-1 and around 11uNm-1 for mice RBC.

Abstract:
Most of pinter's characters know what it is to be puzzled by a human relationship, to be aware of sudden changes and insecurities in it, finding suddenly boggy ground under their feet or shifting sand where there had been a firm path. They all know how no relationship is static but continually changing and developing, and have experienced the sense of personal insecurity this can give. Nothing in their lives is firm and stable; not their physical contexts nor their own memory. Language is essential in pinter's theatre: often bearing threatening messages, words, spoken or hushed, are all ambiguous and mysterious. Pinter's characteres feels their very selves threatened: and this self is the most important thing there is. They all emerge shadowy, tenuous, menaced, cheating each other, hiding behind a role which is false, shifting their ground in relation to each other in order to pursue their own advantage. Pinter is one of the most perceptive and able dramatists to express human insecurity. Risking his reputation, pinter confesses doing "agit-prop" since 1984, but actually, has always been preoccupied with the way in which people change their roles in any relationship, and with any kind of oppression. Together with its psychological aspect, pinter's theatre. .

Abstract:
In Harold Pinter’s theatre, the eccentricity of literary space – all at once Alaska, the Sahara desert, the Mediterranean, Treasure or tropical islands, cricket grounds, rabbit holes, ghostly palaces even concentration camps – relentlessly contradicts the naturalism of the stage. The filigree landscapes recollected through dialogues and stage directions, exile the audience to a deep and unnamable past that must be responsibly faced. A gothic odyssey sets off as soon as the curtain rises and wholly dissolves the realism of the scenery; the rooms which the characters somehow inhabit end up wrecked on foreign and inhospitable shores. The public is held hostage by this haunted language and witnesses helplessly the defacement of humanity. Such a theatrical violence lies precisely in the aesthetic obliteration of the Face which, for Lévinas, is the very expression of injustice, and that we named “poethics”

Abstract:
The Room (1957), The Birthday Party (1957), The Caretaker (1960), The Homecoming (1965), Old Times (1971) i Mountain Language (1988).

This thesis puts forward an alternative approach to the study of language in the plays or Harold Pinter which is based on the analysis of the structure of dramatic dialogue. Six plays by Pinter are selected from different points in his career ("The Room" (1957), "The Birthday Party" (1957), "The Caretaker" (1960), "The Homecoming" (1965), "Old Times" (1971), and "Mountain Language" (1988)), and their dialogue is analysed by means of tools derived from Discourse Analysis: the basic notions in Speech Act theory, H.P. Grice's Cooperative Principle, J. Laver's work on phatic communion, the functional load of the (pro)nominal system, and G.N. Leech's PoIiteness Principle. It is argued that in Pinter's work for the stage language is presented as a power device, as the means through which characters negotiate roles and relationships, and also construct versions of reality which they attempt to impose on others. Such a view of language becomes thematised in Pinter's drama. In his output up to 1980, the thematisation of verbal interaction is reflected in a foregrounding of the pragmatic function of dramatic dialogue which, it is claimed. may account for the frequently mentioned idiosyncratic nature of Pinter's language, as well as for much of the history of the critical reception of his work, Language as power is still the playwright's major concern after 1980, but as his plays have become openly politicised, so they have begun to insist on the value of the referential function as the means to express unquestionable realities, such as torture. The strategic exploitation of the pragmatic function is presented in Pinter's post-1980 plays, such as "Mountain Language", as a tool for political manipulation and oppression and, thus, as a phenomenon to be denounced and condemned.

The subcutaneous implantable devices (SID) are used for long or repetitive intravascular treatment. They are associated with complications and human errors : so the french competent authorities (CA) wrote some recommendations regarding the subclavian (SC) access and the accessories used with the SID. A medical device vigilance study of the SID was carried out in France (2001-2003). The AFSSaPS received 260 initial reports : 61 catheter (KT) cracks, 101 KT sections and 37 disconnections. The intravascular access was described for 176 cases : it was the SC vein in 70% of the cases and it is responsible of 54 compressions and 36 KT embolizations. In 50% of cases the event is due to an human error and in 20% of cases the event cause wasn't found. These results incite to write news recommendations and to have news reflections from the users and the CA

Mbaye, Samba.

Full text
Abstract:
The main purpose of this research is not only to try to grasp the meaning of the unsaid and the hidden in the artistic work of Harold Pinter, but first and foresmost to show that language can neither have a meaning nor be made out if we do not consider what is lying underneath or if we disregard any reading between the lines. Even if it's obvious that the stage is more often than not under the yoke of words, the gist of any play is to be looked for in silence. In Pinter's dramatic world, silence can be understood as what cannot be said, what is not thoroughly said, what is not clearly expressed, what is not yet said, what will never be said. It can be due to many reasons, a silence may be observed under duress, as it may be made purposefully. The body language is more than important, for what is displayed through it can urge any shrewd spectator to muse upon what is beyond his eyes. Since words and images are not often reliable, the work of any spectator is to ponder over what is shown or said to him. And like any tool of communication, silence requires a text and a context to yield the substance emnodied in it. Any attempt to sever the language of words from that of silence is doomed to failure. Silence per se is the realm of silent words. Before being uttered, any word was first kept in silence. All discourses stem from silence, and whilst some can reach the listener, others need a particular attention, whence our interest in Pinter's early poems. The silence we'redealing with is not a void. It's pregnant with meaning and cannot be avoided as long as we're able to speak or we're potential locutors

Abstract:
Outeiro dos Castelos de Beijós (COCB) is a well-known archaeological site for its Late Bronze Age occupation (Senna-Martinez, 1993, 1994, 1995/1996a, 2000a and 2000b; Senna-Martinez e Nunes, 1993; Senna-Martinez e Ventura, 2008a; Senna-Martinez and Pedro, Eds. 2000). However, another anthropic use of this space, in the Early Neolithic, was still, without adequate dissemination. This happens despite the fact that part of the collections are on display at the Municipal Museum of Carregal do Sal and are part of the respective catalogue (Pinto, 2006; Senna-Martinez, 2006). In the 2004/2005 academic year, two students from FLUL’s Degree in Archeology – and collaborators in this article – proceeded to draw and carry out the typological analysis, within the scope of their final seminar, respectively of the pottery and the lithic industry associated with the Ancient Neolithic occupation. Here we recuperate these academic efforts and integrate their contribution following what has been one of Uniarq’s best traditions. We will also try to integrate the new COCB data in the broader scope of the Neolithisation of the Mondego inland basin and of the Portuguese Centre/North.

<em>Abstract.</em>—Northern Snakeheads <em>Channa argus </em>were imported by fish farmers in Arkansas for use and sale in live food markets before being banned by the state in July 2002. Farmers were advised to destroy their stock in 2002 when importation and interstate trade were federally banned under the Lacey Act (18 U.S.C § 42(a) (1)). These farmers reportedly attempted this action, but on April 14, 2008; a wild Northern Snakehead, confirmed by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, was captured by a local row crop farmer. An eradication plan was formulated for Fall 2008 involving several government agencies and universities. Arkansas experienced several late summer storms resulting in flood conditions during that time. The eradication effort, named Operation Mongoose, was rescheduled for March, 2009. Operation Mongoose involved the application of the fish toxicant rotenone using helicopters, Marsh Masters, boats, and ground teams to cover approximately 700 km of creeks, ditches, and backwater areas within the 20,250 ha Piney Creek watershed. The effort reduced the Northern Snakehead population in the drainage but did not eradicate them. Because this area is prone to annual flooding, range expansion of Northern Snakehead occurred. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission tracks Northern Snakehead dispersal through reporting from the angling public. During 2017, the first confirmed range expansion outside of Arkansas occurred in Mississippi.

Abstract:
This small-scale study draws on a higher education context where French-speaking students, in situ at Bordeaux University, participated in the Sharing Perspectives Foundation’s flagship Erasmus+ Virtual Exchange (E+VE) program (2018-2019). French-speaking students interacted in English on the topic of Newcomers and Nationalism via weekly webinars with non-native English-speaking students from other participating universities in Europe and the Southern Mediterranean region. Authenticity is a complex concept involving the degree of implication and meaning speakers give to their interactions (Gilmore, 2007; Pinner, 2016; Widdowson, 2003). The study therefore addresses the question of how participant feedback can help us to assess E+VE in terms of authenticity. The methods used to investigate this research question were the qualitative analysis of the French students’ reflective journals, questionnaires, and interviews. The results show that E+VE is conducive to authentic learner experiences. This study has also enabled a definition of ‘authenticity’ as a transformative language learner experience in virtual exchange.

Abstract:
In Latvia the forest legislation requires that at least five living trees must be retained per hectare after clear-cutting. It is known that retention trees significantly increase the biodiversity in production forest landscape. After clear-cutting retention trees function as habitats for various lichens, mosses, insects, fungi and birds. Over time retention trees are incorporated into the young forests stand and provide presence of old trees, which is necessary for many endangered and rare species. After the death, these trees turn into coarse woody debris which is an essential habitat and feeding source for many taxa. However, the conservation and mortality of the retention trees has not been studied extensively because this approach has been established recently. The aim of this study was to evaluate development of the retention trees in Hylocomiosa type of forests in Southern Latvia. In total 12 young forest stands were surveyed in 2009 and 2015. The total area – 13.7 ha, on average forest stand size varies from 0.5 to 3.0 ha. All the studied sites were harvested in 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008. All measurements of tree species, height, and diameter and defoliation class assessed and the status of tree (growing tree, coarse woody debris – snags, stems and downed logs) was indicated. Results show that after the studied period of seven years 24 retention trees died. Average level of the tree mortality is 15 %. The mortality level of Scots pine retention trees is 5.8 %, for aspen – 50 % and that for birch – 92.3 %. An average it is 8.5 green retention trees per 1 ha of young stand (22.9 m3 ha-1). On average 2.3 pieces coarse woody debris are per 1 ha of young stand (3.52 m3 ha-1), mostly - aspen wood (2.4 m3 ha-1). Woody debris of the young stands is divided to the first 4 decay levels according to classification (Stokland et al., 2001). 50 % of the listed woody debris is related to the 3rd decay level which means that woody debris is moderately decomposed.

Abstract:
The aim of the study is to determine how successful the initial growth of naturally grown and planted pines is after performing the shelterwood cutting. The research includes tree count and height analysis in Myrtillosa and Hylocomiosa forest types with different regeneration methods in 2018. A total of 10 sites were arranged for the research, each site having 4 sample plots. All naturally regenerated and planted pine (2009, 2012 and 2013) heights were measured. Judging by the number of trees after shelterwood cutting, most sites should not be considered regenerated, additional planting or scarification of soil is required which can improve the efficiency of natural regeneration. In all the sites both in Myrtillosa and Hylocomiosa, after shelterwood cutting it was observed that the height of artificially regenerated trees is higher than the height of naturally regenerated trees, indicating the ability of planted pines to produce more rapid height increment in the first years of life, regardless of forest type. The basal area of the stand has a significant negative impact on the increment, and it indicates the need for the subsequent shelterwood cut to be performed. Although Hylocomiosa is a more fertile forest type than Myrtillosa, the height of the planted pine trees in Myrtillosa is higher than in Hylocomiosa, where, after shelterwood cutting, no sufficiently intensive agro-technical tending has been performed.

In ASME 2011 30th International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering. ASMEDC, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/omae2011-49251.

Abstract:
Several aspects of risers’ dynamics still demand extensive researches as to improve the understanding about physical phenomena involved, so check the adequacy among analytical and numerical results in offshore applications. Dynamic compression of risers is one of these subjects, which has extreme practical relevance in the sense of both design and structural analysis. In this work a riser is anchored at its top end and the other one remains resting on the seabed. Consider that the riser has quasi-vertical configuration. Thus, the angle between the tangent line at the top end and the vertical is small, and its tension on the vicinity of the touchdown point (TDP) is also small. The riser is statically subject to its own submerged weight and on it can act a horizontal ocean current. Furthermore, it supposed a harmonic motion imposed at the top in the tangent direction to the line, caused by local waves on the floating unit. Since the dynamic tension τ(s) changes cyclically in time and the tension T(s) in the TDP is small, it is possible that in this region, the first exceeds the second one in part of cycle’s wave. In these situations occurs a phenomenon known as dynamic compression, widely discussed in Aranha; Pinto and Silva (2001), Aranha; Pinto (2001), Ramos; Pesce (2003) and Fujarra; Simos (2006). During the dynamic compression occurs riser buckling-like. In a strict sense, the behavior of a riser is similar to a cable, although its bending stiffness is not null. Hence, risers have some resistance to buckling-like and can support a certain level of compression. The maximum loading of compression that can be measured in a riser segment is known as critical load (Pcr). Aranha; Pinto and Silva (2001) proposed a simple analytical formulation for the critical load. The aim of the present paper is to propose a simple analytical equation for the speed of compression waves that propagate from the TDP to the riser’s top end. This formulation depends on physical characteristics of the riser and the levels of tension to which it is submitted. As a result, it is possible to compare the theoretical results obtained with numerical simulations and physical experiments. The outcomes provide more understanding to the phenomenon of dynamic compression of risers.

We can consider this fringe as ‘proximity’ landscapes: landscapes that are perceived when the city is either a destination or a point of departure. The vision from afar, or when progressively approaching the city, provides both locals and tourists with certain landscape and architectural aspects that should be studied, preserved and valued for their ability to generate meaningful spaces. In this communication we study the surrounding landscapes of Madrid by means of a Landscape Character Assessment, within the framework of the project ‘Proximity landscapes of the city of Madrid. From the 19thC to the present’ currently in process. Combining graphic analysis of historical cartography at a metropolitan scale with perceptive analysis techniques, special attention is drawn to certain axes and significant lookouts of the city, mapping them and evaluating their visual basins. This characterization leads to distinguishing three main landscape types surrounding Madrid, according to physical, natural and anthropogenic structures: one predominantly natural, one mainly industrial and service-related, and a third one with special historical relevance. Abstract:
Linkage or cam follower types of mechanisms are designed to create dwell motion when the interest of point on the mechanism is expected to stay at rest while the input is constantly supplied to the driven link. Generally, six bar linkages consisting of a four bar crank rocker mechanism actuating a slider crank are considered for linkage type mechanisms. A novel compliant translational double exact dwell mechanism incorporating the buckling motion of an initially straight flexible member as its members is introduced in this paper. Buckling members are designed to create dwell motion as a compliant mechanism that is easy to manufacture and require minimum number of components and assembly. This partially compliant five bar mechanism consists of two rigid links as the crank and the slider, and two flexible links as the coupler and the last link. Kinematic analysis of the mechanism is broken into two parts. The first one is a flexible pinned-pinned beam attached to a slider and the second one is the pinned-pinned flexible beam which is attached to a rotating crank. Large deflection analysis of pinned-pinned buckling beam is obtained by solving first and second kind of elliptic integrals in Matlab. Load required to displace the slider and the maximum bending moment restored on the pinned-pinned beam are analyzed by changing the normalized offset from 0 to 1. A mechanism is said to be linear if the slope of the load-deflection curve remains positive during deformation. Slope of the normalized load deflection curves at various offsets are explored and design limitations providing a stable buckling behavior is discussed. Pinned-pinned buckling beams are represented by springs possessing the same load-deflection characteristics as the compliant beams where the nonlinear spring function is described by a 4th order polynomials fitted to the load-deflection curves both for the beam attached to the slider and the beam attached to the driven crank. The emphasis is placed on the dynamic response of the double exact dwell motion profile. Simulation results are studied using Solidworks model, and Matlab. Slider stays at rest until the maximum bending moment of the coupler flexible link is achieved creating the dwell, snaps to its maximum position and on the return creates a momentary dwell since the flexible follower behaves like a rigid link. Desired dwell motion can be accomplished by changing the flexible beam parameters such as its length, thickness and offset ratio.

Saha, Amrita, Jodie Thorpe, Keir Macdonald, and Kelbesa Megersa. Linking Business Environment Reform with Gender and Inclusion: A Study of Business Licensing Reform in Indonesia. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), January 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2021.001.

Full text
Abstract:
Business environment reform (BER) targets inadequate business regulations. It is intended to remove constraints to business investment, enabling growth and job creation, and create opportunities for international business to contribute to and benefit from this growth. However, there is a lack of detailed knowledge of the impact of BER on gender and inclusion (G&I). While a review of existing literature suggests that in general, there is no direct link between BER and G&I, indirect links are likely through the influence of BER on firm performance. Outcomes will be influenced by the differential ways in which women-led firms experience the business environment when compared to their male counterparts, with disparities based on how they are treated under the law, as well as structural and sociocultural factors. The fact that in many countries, female-led firms are fewer and smaller than those of their male counterparts, and may operate in different sectors, also affects these dynamics. This research offers new insights through an in-depth analysis of the impact of the Pelayanan Terpadu Satu Pintu (PTSP) or one-stop shop business licensing reform in 2009 on firm performance in Indonesia, and how these impacts vary based on the gender of firm leadership. The results find that on average, firms benefited from improved business performance (sales), as a direct or indirect effect of this reform, as well as an increase in the number of medium and large-scale firms. Outside Jakarta (Bali, Banten, Lampung), women-led firms experienced a small but significant benefit relative to male-led firms, related to both sales and the number of medium and large-scale firms they run. In Jakarta, women-led firms continued to lag behind men and there were no significant effects on employment, and this held across province and gender. These findings are based on an analysis of the PTSP reform using data from the World Bank Enterprise Survey (WBES), a survey of small, medium and large firms (i.e. with more than four employees) which took place in Indonesia between 2009 and 2015.
