Abstract:
El presente trabajo tiene por objeto dar a conocer una recopilación de los antecedentes disponibles tanto en Chile como en el extranjero de la especie Pinus ponderosa. Se da especial énfasis a trabajos realizados en distintos organismos chilenos, ya sea Universidades o Institutos de Investigación, quienes analizan propiedades tecnológicas específicas de la especie creciendo en Chile, lo cual es la base para posteriores investigaciones, permitiendo de este modo complementar dichos estudios. A nivel nacional solo se cuenta con estudios de introducción de la especie, por lo cual el campo de investigación todavía es amplio. De acuerdo a las características de la especie, se vislumbra como promisoria en zonas australes, donde los terrenos de aptitud preferentemente agrícola están limitados para este uso por las temperaturas extremas y coincide la ubicación geográfica con el hemisferio norte.

En el presente trabajo se integran resultados de estudios tecnológicos relacionados con el secado, aserrío y clasificación visual estructural de la madera de pino ponderosa, con la determinación de tensiones admisibles de la madera, con la caracterización mecánica de muros fabricados con ella y con la determinación de parámetros de habitabilidad de soluciones constructivas (aislación térmica y acústica, y resistencia al fuego). Se entrega además la base técnica para la incorporación de la madera aserrada de la especie en la normativa chilena del Instituto Nacional de Normalización (INN) que regula el uso de la madera en la construcción en el país (NCh 1198, NCh 789-1; NCh 1207) y se proporcionan todos los antecedentes técnicos de la construcción de una vivienda piloto en la ciudad de Coyhaique.
