Abstract:
This paper presents the results of numerical dynamic analyses of a number of pipe whip problems based on non-linear shell theory using the DYNA3D (version 6.0) finite element code. The calculations are mainly concerned with the transient deformation of the pipes during the whipping process. The main purpose of the study is to check the efficacy of a recently published theoretical elastic-plastic, hardening-softening (e-p-h-s) model for pipe whip developed by Reid et al. [1, 2]. This model is based upon beam theory but allows for the effects of ovalization of the pipe cross-section on the momen

The dynamic elastic-plastic behavior of a bent cantilever pipe subjected to an in-plane force pulse at its tip is described. A theoretical model based on a large deflection formulation of dynamic beam theory is described. This takes into account the plastic hardening-softening behavior which is characteristic of a pipe when it is subjected to large changes in curvature. This beam model was first formulated and applied by Reid et al. (1995b, 1996), who demonstrated that it was able to describe quite accurately the characteristics of freely whipping, straight cantilever pipes. The present paper

Energy balance methods commonly in use for the design of pipe whip restraints are based on the solution for the motion of a rigid-plastic pipe before impact against the restraint, with the assumption that after impact, the whipping portion of the pipe continues to rotate about the plastic hinge location determined for conditions before impact. Such energy balance methods are not necessarily conservative because: 1) the plastic hinge which forms in the pipe moves after impact on the restraint; and 2) elastic pipe deformations are not considered. When the pipe length between break exit and restraint is long in the pipe whip accident, the pipe will undergo a plastic collapse as the moment increases. The length at which plastic collapse may occur is called the critical overhang length, (OH)cr. The experimental results of (OH)cr show good agreement with the prediction by a static simplified estimation method for (OH)cr although the pipe whipping is a dynamic phenomenon. The diagrams of (OH)cr are also described for a range of sizes of stainless steel pipe under the loss of coolant accident conditions of light water reactors.

The original plant design was by Kraftwerk Union (KWU) in the 1970's using the German methodology of break preclusion. The plant construction was halted for several decades, but a recent need for power was the driver for restarting the construction. The United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (US NRC) developed leak-before-break (LBB) procedures in standard review plan (SRP) 3.6.3 Revision 1 for the purpose of eliminating the need to design for dynamic effects that allowed t

On 27 March 2008, my wife Emily and I purchased a 737 ha property adjoining Castlepoint Station, called Mockingbird Farm. The property is typical of Wairarapa hill country ranging from small amounts of rolling hill to steep hills with about 407 ha of reverting scrub, 200 ha of average pasture and 130 ha of pine trees. This paper covers the decision process we went through in deciding to purchase the property. A key component of that decision was the ability to sell carbon credits from the pine trees to meet the carrying costs of the purchase. The paper also outlines the process we have been th

In this research, a sonochemical activation-assisted biosynthesis of Au/Fe3O4 nanoparticles is proposed. The proposed synthesis methodology incorporates the use of Piper auritum (an endemic plant) as reducing agent and in a complementary way, an ultrasonication process to promote the synthesis of the plasmonic/magnetic nanoparticles (Au/Fe3O4). The synergic effect of the green and sonochemical synthesis favors the well-dispersion of precursor salts and the subsequent growth of the Au/Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The hybrid green/sonochemical process generates an economical, ecological and simplified a

There are three stages in internet dating: first, the emailing back and forth; second, the phone conversation; and third, the meeting for 'coffee'. But before we discuss the three stages, here are some hints about the preliminary work you have to do. At the outset, you have to trawl through the thousands of people who have placed their profiles on the site. This is aided by limiting your search to a certain age spread, and your city or region. Then you can narrow it down further by checking educational background, whether they have kids, whether they write in New Age jargon, etc You have to tr
