Abstract: The mainstay of the project “Automatic room light controller using PIR Sensor and Ardiuno” is the importance of seismological research around the globe is very clear. Where the lights in the room will automatically turn on upon detecting a human motion and stay turned on until the person has left or there is no motion. Initially, when there is no human movement, the PIR Sensor doesn’t detect any person and its OUT pin stays LOW. As the person enters the room, the change in infrared radiation in the room is detected by the PIR Sensor. It can be used to turn ON and OFF the lighting system of the home automatically by detecting the presence of humans. This in turn will make the Arduino to turn OFF the relay (make the relay pin HIGH) and the room light will be turned off quickly as per the time delays sets in the program. Abstract:
Digital security and monitoring systems are entering a new era. Every industry is busy developing security systems according to their individual needs. What can be done is by providing a security perimeter around the assets to prevent unwanted things. There are currently many CCTV (Closed Circuit Television) based security systems; CCTV security systems also have less effective because they require more devices and large enough storage memory. Also, there are other solutions, namely systems that are built using PIR sensors and Raspberry Pi. The PIR sensor is used to detect infrared emissions from humans, so the target object is a human. The PIR sensor also receives heat radiation from humans, so when humans move, this sensor will receive changes in radiation emitted by humans. The purpose of this study is to simulate a solution to the problem of infrastructure design for the development of a physical asset security system using a Wireless Sensor Network and to find out how the security system works using a PIR sensor and Raspberry Pi Model B. The research method used is the Network Development Life Cycle (NDLC) approach. This study illustrates that the Raspberry Pi with hardware capabilities and Rasbian OS and the Python programming language support building a security system. The HC-SR501 PIR sensor can also detect moving objects from the right, left, and front. Email and SMS can be well integrated to produce reports according to the sensor's movement.

Abstract:
Pyroelectric Infrared (PIR) sensors are low-cost, low-power, and highly reliable sensors that have been widely used in smart environments. Indoor localization systems can be categorized as wearable and non-wearable systems, where the latter are also known as device-free localization systems. Since the binary PIR sensor detects only the presence of a human motion in its field of view (FOV) without any other information about the actual location, utilizing the information of overlapping FOV of multiple sensors can be useful for localization. In this study, a PIR detector and sensing signal processing algorithms were designed based on the characteristics of the PIR sensor. We applied the designed PIR detector as a sensor node to create a non-wearable cooperative indoor human localization system. To improve the system performance, signal processing algorithms and refinement schemes (i.e., the Kalman filter, a Transferable Belief Model, and a TBM-based hybrid approach (TBM + Kalman filter)) were applied and compared. Experimental results indicated system stability and improved positioning accuracy, thus providing an indoor cooperative localization framework for PIR sensor networks.

This paper describes the work done trying to diminish the noise present in the signal from an IR-detector. The project was aiming towards two different kinds of applications; heat protection and presence detection. The hypothesis was that the signal-noise ratio would decrease if a filter and a proper installation were used for the detector. Some experiments were executed to determine what kind of filter were the most suitable for each application and how these could be installed. After executing the experiments and evaluate the results we recommend to use a specific filter for each application. To install the filter over the detector we evaluated which one of gluing and taping was the best and found that tape is better to use when small amounts are desirable and gluing with silicon is better if large-scale are desired.

Abstract:

Come vennero trattati all’estero?

Abstract:
Passive infrared (PIR) sensors are the most popular deployed sensors in building lighting control for individual presence detection. However, PIR sensors are motion detectors in nature, responding only to incident radiation variation, which lead to false negative detections, inaccurate occupancy estimation, and uncomfortable lighting swings, short lifetime of the equipment, and waste of energy. In this study, a shutter driven by a Lavet motor PIR (LAMPIR) sensor is developed for presence detection for both stationary and moving occupants. Building off our previous work on chopped PIR (C-PIR) and rotationally-chopped PIR (Ro-PIR) sensors, Lavet motor, a single-phase electro-mechanical vibrator, is introduced, which has many advantages over traditional servo motors and stepper motors in terms of power consumption, size, weight and noise level. Driven by pulsed signal from a microcontroller unit (MCU), the electro-mechanical vibrator drives a semi-transparent long-wave infrared (LWIR) optical shutter to shutter the field of view (FOV) of a PIR sensor periodically. Output voltage generated by a LAMPIR senor for occupied and unoccupied scenarios can be monitored and analyzed to identify presence accurately. Parametric studies are conducted to find the optimal setting of driving signal frequency, shutter width and shuttering period. The LAMPIR sensor reaches an accuracy of 100% for detecting stationary occupants up to a range of 4.5 m and moving occupants up to a range of 10 m, which improves the detection range of both C-PIR and Ro-PIR sensors (4.0 m for stationary and 8.0 m for moving occupancy detection). LAMPIR has a FOV of 90° in horizontal and 100° in vertical, which is reasonable for most applications. For a 17-hour-long presence detection test, LAMPIR can reach an accuracy of 93.52% to classify unoccupied, stationary and moving occupant scenarios. More importantly, the average power consumption of LAMPIR is 0.19 W, which is 82% less than that of the C-PIR sensor and 89% less than that of the Ro-PIR sensor.

Abstract:
Owing to the unique features of passive sensing, low cost, large detection range and wide field of view (FOV), the pyroelectric infrared (PIR) sensors are widely used for smart home applications based on motion detection, such as light control, intrusion detection. However, due to the pyroelectricity on which their sensing principles are based, PIR sensors cannot detect stationary objects, which confines their applications to advanced sensing systems, e.g. stationary occupancy sensing. To address this issue, this paper develops a novel chopped PIR (C-PIR) sensor for detecting the presence of both moving and stationary occupants, which consists of a chopper, a servo motor, a Fresnel lens, PIR sensing elements and a controller. Theoretical analysis is conducted to reveal the working principles of the proposed C-PIR sensor. A prototype of the C-PIR sensor is fabricated and experiments are conducted to find the optimal option of the chopper material, and the optimal values of the thickness, and the chopping frequency. Results show that the proposed C-PIR sensor can sense human presence no matter if the occupant is moving or not. In experiments, the preliminary prototype shows its detection range up to 4.0 m for stationary occupant sensing and 8.5 m for moving occupant sensing. Meanwhile, the C-PIR sensor maintains the same performance of the field of view as its traditional PIR sensor counterpart. Thus, the C-PIR sensor has great potential to provide accurate occupancy information for smart building energy management.

Abstract:
Abstract Recently, smart home applications are increasing fast, including but not limited to occupancy-dependent control of lighting, heating and cooling. Passive infrared (PIR) sensors play an important role in these applications to perceive the presence and/or the motion of human. However, PIR sensors are not able to detect stationary occupants while stationary presence takes up most time of the day. And thus, the resulted false negative detection leads to uncomfortable light/temperature swings, shortened equipment’s lifespan, and/or energy waste, etc. To address this issue, our group has developed Synchronized Low-Energy Electronically-chopped PIR (SLEEPIR) sensors that integrate an electronic liquid crystal (LC) infrared shutter with an off-the-shelf PIR sensor. In this work, the infrared shutter made of polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) sandwiched by two germanium windows is proposed to periodically chop the long-wave infrared signal received by the PIR sensor so that stationary human presence can still be detected due to the electronical shuttering. A sensor module is fabricated, consisting of a wireless microcontroller, a SLEEPIR sensor and a traditional PIR sensor, with a field of view of 103° × 103°. Then, a sensor network consists of two sensor modules is developed. Three types of experiments are conducted in this paper: individual action-based, continuous activity-based, and daily routine-based. The detection logic is made by using the threshold value classification method, where the threshold values are determined from the action-based dataset and applied to the other two datasets. The results show that for activity-based dataset, the average accuracy reached 98.96%. For daily routine-based dataset, the average accuracy is 99.57%.

Abstract:
Health monitoring devices using a strain sensor, which shows high sensitivity and large deformability, are strongly demanded due to further aging of society with fewer children. Conventional strain sensors, such as metallic strain gauges and semiconductive strain sensors, however, aren’t applicable to health monitoring because of their low sensitivity and deformability. In this study, fundamental design of area-arrayed graphene nano-ribbon (GNR) strain senor was proposed in order to fabricate next-generation strain sensor. The sensor was consisted of two sections, which are stress concentration section and stress detecting section. This structure can take full advantage of GNR’s properties. Moreover, high quality GNR fabrication process, which is one of the important process in the sensor, was developed by applying CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) method. Top-down approach was applied to fabricate the GNR. At first, in order to synthesize a high-quality graphene sheet, acetylene-based LPCVD (low pressure chemical vapor deposition) using a closed Cu foil was employed. After that, graphene was transferred silicon substrate and the quality was evaluated. The high quality graphene was transferred on the soft PDMS substrate and metallic electrodes were fabricated by applying MEMS technology. Area-arrayed fine pin structure was fabricated by using hard PDMS as a stress-concentration section. Finally, both sections were integrated to form a highly sensitive and large deformable pressure sensor. The strain sensitivity of the GNR-base sensor was also evaluated.
