Abstract:
Argentina's central region includes an important area covered by shallow pampean lakes and dams. In these environments, fishing of pejerrey Odontesthes bonariensis Valenciennes, 1835 (Pisces, Atherinopsidae), the most important fresh-water fish of the country, is a relevant social activity and also a considerable economic resource. The main diseases found in this species were studied from 1992 to 2003 in the provinces of Córdoba, La Rioja and Santa Fe (30º and 35º S, 61º and 67º W). Most cases were registered in high temperature months. Lernaea sp and Aeromonas hydrophila were the etiological

Stress due to starvation is not an uncommon phenomenon in fresh-and brackish water fish living in arid environments. This study, a part of a larger investigation on the effects of stress due to starvation on the organ systems of Aphanius dispar, a cyprinodont fish in Oman, reports on the histopathological changes in the liver, using light and transmission electron microscopy. The hepatocytes showed structural and ultrastructural changes in response to 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours of starvation. The hepatocytes of the starved fish groups were characterized by a reduction in the size of their cells a

A new endemic species of triplefin Ruanoho scurra is described from deep water (108–216 m) on the shelf region around coastal New Zealand (Northland to Stewart Island). It is differentiated from its congeners by the combination of fresh colour (bright yellow spots on the head and anterior body, oblique lines on the dorsal and anal fins, and sub-vertical lines on the caudal) as well as some proportional measurements. Comments are made on the relationship with its congeners, and evolutionary history of the family in New Zealand waters, along with observations on the habitat in which this new spe

The distribution, recruitment, relative abundance and growth of juvenile mulloway, Argyrosomus hololepidotus Lacepede, was investigated in the Hawkesbury River. Otter trawling was used monthly between July 1986 and March 1988 at 12 sites along a salinity gradient over 85 km of the estuary. The greatest numbers of juveniles were caught at sites in the mid section of the estuary (20-40 km from the mouth) where salinities were greatly reduced. No A. hololepidotus were caught at sites that were permanently fresh water and few were caught at the marine-dominated sites closest to the mouth of the es

Dormitator lebretonis (Eleotridae: Steindachner, 1870) is a fish species that inhabits West African coastal environments from Senegal to Angola where this squeaker appears to be an important component of the artisanal fisheries. In particular, this eleotrid is widespread in Benin coastal waters including wetlands, and is intensively exploited for food. The current rearing experiment aimed to determine the salinity levels that favor the survival and growth factors of this squeaker. The reproductive and feeding biology of five syngnathid species of the western Atlantic were studied: the pipefishes Syngnathus fuscus, S. floridae, the lined seahorse Hippocampus erectus of Chesapeake Bay; and the pipefishes S. folletti and Oostethus lineatus, from southern and southeast Brazil, respectively. Male syngnathids incubate eggs received from females in a ventral brood pouch, females do not play any additional role in parental care after mating. This natural sex role reversal is a unique characteristic that all male syngnathids have. In other fishes, parental care is usually a fema
