Abstract:
AbstractThe core sense of pistis as understood in Posterior Analytics, De Anima, and the Rhetoric is not that of a logical relation in which cognitively grasped propositions stand in respect to one another, but the result of an act of socially embedded interpersonal communication, a willing acceptance of guidance offered in respect to action. Even when pistis seems to have an exclusively epistemological sense, this focal meaning of pistis is implicit; to have pistis in a proposition is to willingly accept that proposition as a basis for some kind of activity (albeit possibly theoretical) as a result of some kind of communicative act. This is in accordance with Aristotle’s understanding of argumentation as a social practice, entered into in order lead others to certain actions, for certain ends. Understanding pistis in this way allows us to understand how it is that pistis admits of quantitative variation.

Abstract:
Teresa Morgan’s Roman Faith and Christian Faith provides a major new study of the lexicon of ‘faith’ (pistis/fides) in the early Roman Empire. This review essay provides a summary of the book’s contents as well as a critical assessment. The book begins with study of uses of pistis and fides in Greek and Roman sources, in domestic and personal relations, in military and religious contexts. It then moves to the Septuagint, before turning to the New Testament, which is considered in detail. The early Christian sources are unusual in the prominence and weight they give to pistis, but their usage nonetheless fits within the wider social and cultural matrix, in which pistis and fides primarily express the notion of trust and express the importance of trust and fidelity in a wide range of social and religious relationships. In these early Christian sources there is a heavy focus on divine-human pistis, but this creates networks of trusting and trustworthiness that are crucial to the formation and cohesion of early Christian communities. Some critical questions may be raised – for example, concerning Morgan’s heavy focus on divine-human pistis, and her arguments against the early emergence of a titular usage of pistis to denote the early Christian movement – but overall this is an important study which should reconfigure our sense of early Christian (and especially Pauline) pistis, which is less about ‘belief’, whether salvific or propositional, and more about relationships of trust, which are the foundation of community.

Abstract:
Evidence is marshalled for a recent ‘external-relational shift’ in scholarly understandings of pistis (traditionally translated ‘faith’) among New Testament scholars and historians of early Christianity and its social world. There is a movement away from predominantly personal existential accounts of pistis toward those that are relational and outwardly manifest. ‘Faith’ ( pistis) is predominantly a way of life characterized by fidelity or loyalty which is outwardly expressed in relationships. Beyond the New Perspective on Paul, which is an obvious factor, four streams are feeding this shift: (1) the pistis Christou debate, (2) increased appreciation of ancient social and cultural norms, (3) advances in linguistics, and (4) an emphasis on the gospel as a royal proclamation. To show why the external-relational shift matters theologically, Paul’s use of pistis in Romans 1 is explored along external-relational lines.

Abstract:
Faith is an important concept in early Christianity. But what did the word pistis (and its Latin equivalent fides) mean in the everyday language of Greeks and Romans? In her important study, Teresa Morgan rightly insists that we need to pay as much attention to the way words worked in the mentalité of the wider social world with which Christians were seeking to communicate as we do to the ways they are used in the New Testament. This article seeks to summarize Morgan’s understanding of pistis in the classical world and its impact on NT texts, focusing on the two major themes of pistis as relationship ( believing/trusting in) and pistis as propositional belief ( believing that).

Abstract:
The πíστiς Xρiστoȗ ( pistis Christou) debate continues to be a lively point of scholarly interest. While a vast amount of literature appears on the subject, interpreters often repeat a few main arguments in support of their position. This essay discusses the main exegetical arguments for the two major sides in the pistis Christou debate and how others have responded to the arguments. Arguments for the objective genitive are treated first, followed by those for the subjective genitive. The essay closes with a discussion of the way interpreters have relied on their prior understanding of the larger concept of Paul’s theology as the decisive argument for their position. As such, the essay finds that this larger hermeneutical question of the nature of Paul’s gospel is the true locus of the pistis Christou debate.

AbstractIn my contribution to the symposium on Teresa Morgan's Roman Faith and Christian Faith, I set the stage for three questions. First, in the Graeco-Roman view, when you put/maintain faith in someone, is the cognitive aspect of your faith compatible with scepticism about the relevant propositions? Second, did some of the New Testament authors think that one could put/maintain faith in God while being sceptical about the relevant propositions? Third, in her private writings, Saint Teresa of Calcutta described herself as living by faith and yet not believing; even so, by all appearances, she was an exemplar of faith in God. Would people during the period of your study tend to see her as an exemplar of faith in God?

Abstract:

Abstract:
This doctoral thesis is an exegetic approach of the triad andin 1Thess, 1Co and Gal. It aims to answer to questions relating to  the changes in the way Paul mobilizes the triad,  its potentially founding part,  its meaning,  its origin and  the community context which lead the apostle to refer to the triad. After identifying the place of the triad in Pauline corpus (Part 1), a systematic analyse of the occurrences and pericopes, which their theme is connected at least with one of the three concepts, is conducted in order to define the meaning of (Part 2) (Part 3) and (Part 4). The discussion (Part 5) use results of research work to answer to the considered questions. Finally, this doctoral thesis shows that the triad is the expression of a theological thought about Christian being. It constitutes a “summary” intended to be shared by all the believers whom Paul refers with the aim of contributing to do the unity of the Christian communities

Tonstad, Sigve K. "Saving God's reputation : the theological function of 'pistis Iesou' in the cosmic narratives of Revelation." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/13491.

Full text
Abstract:
Scholars generally see the aspiration of the Roman Empire and the imperial cult in Asia Minor as God's chief antagonists in Revelation, treating the depiction of a cosmic conflict in the book mostly as metaphors that hold little or no explanatory power in the story. In this thesis I pursue the complementary and partly contrary conviction that the cosmic conflict imagery is the primary and controlling element in the account. Such a reading puts the war-in-heaven theme in the foreground, calling on interpreters to pay far more attention to the illustrious heavenly being whose attempt to subvert the truth about the divine government is the unremitting concern in Revelation. My first aim is therefore to redress the distortion that results from leaving the larger conflict theme underexposed. Having first developed the story line, I next aim to show that the phrase pistis Iesou in Revelation is best understood when Revelation is read as a theodicy of God's handling of the reality of evil, expressing on the one hand 'the faithfulness of Jesus' in the unmasking of evil, and on the other hand his faithful disclosure of God's character. In the form of a slaughtered Lamb Jesus brings God's maligned character to light, thereby saving God's embattled reputation, and against this wholly unexpected manifestation the slanderous and subversive design of the cosmic adversary is to no avail. Pistis lesou, understood as the legacy of 'the faithfulness of Jesus,' stands as the defining and preserving element when the forces of deception bring their final effort to bear on believers in Revelation. I conclude that pistis lesou understood as 'the faithfullness of Jesus' reflects the concern of Revelation better than the three interpretations currently in use, "the faith of Jesus," "faith in Jesus," or "faithfulness to Jesus".

Evans, Erin Michelle. "Books of Jeu and the Pistis Sophia : system, practice, and development of a religious group." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/9438.

Full text
Abstract:
The primary objective of this thesis is to argue that the Books of Jeu (in the Bruce Codex) and the Pistis Sophia (the Askew Codex) are the product of a hitherto largely unrecognized religious group or community emerging from the dynamic religious climate of the first four centuries of the Common Era. It presents evidence that they have their own coherent system of theology, cosmology and soteriology, and demonstrates the strong ties that bind the individual tractates contained within these texts to one another. Chapter One provides a brief introduction to the history of the manuscripts, discusses methodology, presents definitions and a short thesis outline, and delivers a review of literature on the subject. Chapter Two examines each of the texts under consideration, giving a brief overview of their contents; arguments are presented for their chronological order, the exclusion of certain texts and fragments from the wider codices, and reasons these texts should be considered products of a religious group as opposed to being pure literary products of individual thinkers. Chapter Three traces the cosmology from the earliest to the latest of the texts, outlining shifts that take place and proposing explanations for these changes within an overall developmental framework. Chapter Four examines the roles of individual figures from the earliest to the latest texts; it demonstrates that although on the surface these roles may seem to change, their underlying nature remains constant, supporting the notion that they are the products of a group with a consistent underlying system. Chapter Five analyses the profusion of diagrams found in the two Books of Jeu, breaking them down into categories based on their nature and use as expressed by the texts. It further demonstrates that such images had a precedent in the religious and cultural atmosphere of Greco-Roman society. Chapter Six discusses potential outside religious influences present in these texts, and shows that while they are highly syncretistic, outside ideas are always incorporated within the existing framework of the group’s system: conflicting notions are subordinated to the existing theology and soteriology. The thesis concludes that these texts represent evidence of a practicing religious group that remained active over a period of time, producing multiple texts by multiple authors, adapting to a changing religious climate but maintaining the ideas that remained central to their underlying theological and soteriological system.

Abstract:
This study aims to establish the semantic range of πίστις (‘faith’) in fourth century Christian discourse using the preaching of John Chrysostom as a source base. Against previous scholarship which sees πίστις as primarily a cognitive or propositional term referring to belief, this study uses a close examination of Chrysostom’s preaching to argue that the relational nature of the term was central to its significance for fourth century preaching as Christians considered their own faith and biblical texts. Chrysostom uses the reciprocal, relational character of πίστις to emphasise loyalty, trust and obedience to God through metaphors based upon the military, economic and household contexts of late antiquity. This study further shows that Chrysostom in turn uses these aspects of πίστις to seek to influence the everyday life of his congregation, whether to support existing behaviour (such as obedience to the emperor, or husbands, or the bishop) or to seek to transform behaviour (such as encouraging the rich to give to the poor, or masters to treat slaves better). This contextual understanding of πίστις therefore sheds light on how the relationship with God both informed and was informed by the everyday human relationships of the congregation. The study overall demonstrates the necessity of understanding Chrysostom’s view of πίστις as belonging within a reciprocal relationship, enabling a new view of Chrysostom’s preaching, faith and late antiquity to emerge.

Abstract:

How a speaker can use their posture, gesture, facial expression and voice to create a strong ethos, pistis and sense of trustworthiness is, in this paper, associated with charisma (the power of leadership or authority).

Verbal and nonverbal expressions from three particular speeches by Martin Luther King, John F Kennedy and Bill Clinton have been analyzed in depth. The results show that patos as well as strong nonverbal expression are factors in inspiring devotion or creating enthusiasm. Personal magnetism and radiance is also found to develop through figures of speech and rhetorical devices, including metaphors. Results show that facial expressions, pitch and other prosodic information are not always consciously taken in. Nevertheless, it is questioned whether such information can affect the ethos and pistis developed. This kind of subconscious infliction can be made visible by modern technical equipment. By identifying relevant para- and extralinguistic signals (so called ‘charismatic behaviors’ e.g. intense eyecontact) we can more easily understand why some people affect us greatly, while others go unnoticed.

Abstract:
Pistons for heavy duty diesel applications endure high thermal loads and therefore result in reduced durability. Pistons for such heavy duty applications are generally designed with an internal oil gallery — called the piston cooling gallery (PCG) — where the intent is to reduce the piston crown temperatures through forced convection cooling and thereby ensure the durability of the piston. One of the key factors influencing the efficiency of such a heat-transfer process is the volume fraction of oil inside the piston cooling gallery — defined as the filling ratio (FR) — during engine operation. As a part of this study, a motoring engine measurement system was developed to measure the piston filling ratio of an inline-6 production heavy duty engine. In this system, multiple high precision pressure sensors were applied to the piston cooling gallery and a linkage was designed and fabricated to transfer the piston cooling gallery oil pressure signal out of the motoring engine. This pressure information was then correlated with the oil filling ratio through a series of calibration runs with known oil quantity in the piston cooling gallery. This proposed method can be used to measure the piston cooling gallery oil filling ratio for heavy duty engine pistons. A preliminary transient Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis was performed to identify the filling ratio and transient pressures at the corresponding transducer locations in the piston cooling gallery for one of the motoring test operating speeds (1200 RPM). A mesh dependency study was performed for the CFD analysis and the results were compared against those from the motoring test.

Abstract:
While steel pistons have been in use for a long time in commercial vehicle diesel engines, the first series production applications for passenger car diesel engines are currently imminent. The main reason for the use of steel pistons in high speed diesel engines is not, as maybe initially hypothesized, the increasing requirements on the component strength due to increasing mechanical loads, but rather challenges based on the actual CO2-legislation. The increasing requirements to reduce the fuel consumption necessitate new innovative technologies. The imminent penalties for exceeding the prescribed CO2 emissions seem to make the steel piston a viable alternative today, despite its higher manufacturing costs. So far, the CO2-benefits using steel pistons were mainly ascribed to the reduced friction between piston and cylinder liner due to no thermal interference. Fuel consumption measurements at vehicle manufacturer and research institutes hypothesize also an influence of the steel piston on the thermodynamic efficiency. MAHLE uses engine tests to investigate one piston variant made of aluminum (series production piston with cooled ring carrier) and one of steel (MAHLE TopWeld) in a detailed system comparison. Using a fully indicated engine, a combustion process analysis is performed and used as the basis for a loss analysis. The engine set-up parameters can be adjusted fully variable using a flexible ECU. The effect that the piston variant has on the combustion process is captured and balanced, e.g., by adjusting the parameters to obtain identical emissions. The analysis records the potential of the variants for each engine operating map area. The thermal conditions for the piston and the piston wall temperature on the combustion chamber side are varied over a wide range using a conditioning device for piston cooling. The influence of this intervention on the thermal load of the piston and the combustion and also the influence of different combustion mappings is measured directly by telemetric piston temperature measurement. MAHLE recently completed a system comparison [3] between aluminum and steel pistons with detailed measurements on a fully indicated engine, covering friction and temperature behavior as well as influences on combustion.

Abstract:
This paper presents the first prototype of a novel axial piston pump/motor of slipper type. The pistons are floating in the cylinders and hence the name floating piston pump. The novel pump design fills a gap in the traditional pump design. The pump is made to fit the automobile requirements to use fluid power in a more prominent manner. One of the expected benefits of this design is its simplicity and therefore the machine does not require high manufacturing capabilities. The production cost is expected to be low. The machine is designed with high number of pistons, which leads to a pump/motor with low noise level. The displacement angle is small, 8 degrees, which leads to low piston speeds with its benefits. The main challenge in the design is the piston seal configuration. The seals will both, deform (ovality) and move in a circle relative to the pistons. The paper discusses design considerations and proposes a design. The efficiency measurement of the first prototype is in level of a series produced slipper type machine at its sweet spot.

Abstract:
This paper describes a comprehensive model of Elastohydrodynamic piston lubrication, incorporated the crown lands into solution domain to characterize the effect of crown-liner interactions on piston motion. Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication (EHL) analysis of a piston skirt-liner conjunction is in general a useful methodology for design analysis of pistons. The diameters of piston crown lands are much less than those of skirt and liner for typical piston designs. Therefore crown lands normally do not interact with liner under usual operating conditions and hence most of the researchers exclude crown lands from the EHL analysis and mainly focus on piston skirt. However, under some of the engine operating conditions piston crown lands play important role in the secondary dynamics and tribology aspects of pistons. During the thermodynamic cycle when piston is hot and cylinder liner is relatively colder, piston thermal expansion leads to crown-liner interaction, which necessitates EHL, asperity contact and wear considerations of piston crown along with piston skirt. The simulation methodology for piston EHL analysis uses a mass-conserving algorithm for the finite volume method solution of Reynolds equation, which is coupled to elasticity relations and Greenwood-Tripp asperity contact model. Elrod’s mass conserving algorithm enables to model and analyze partially lubricated piston-liner interface by the input of oil supply and moreover rigorously handles cavitated zones, and takes into account piston ring grooves, piston cut-outs and unlubricated areas due to piston geometry. Results are presented from parametric studies that show comparisons between the analyses of the models with piston skirt lubrication only and piston lubrication, which incorporates the crown lands to the EHL domain.

Abstract:
Abstract In this work a procedure for parametric computer aided design of hydraulic cylinder pistons has been developed. Such a piston is a kind of component that has a geometry that is dependent and determined of surrounding and interacting parts. The piston seal has a very strong influence on the piston geometry, and the kind of piston design rules that can be found in piston seal catalogues have been used in the developed computer programs. The design procedure is divided in two parts. In the piston family design part, a piston family product model, which is common for a group of pistons with different dimensions but uses the same seal cross section, is created and stored in a piston family product model data base. In the member design part the piston family data is retrieved, dimension determining parameters are given, and one particular piston of a certain size is created and presented. The software system needed in order to be able to apply the suggested procedure consists of - a CAD-system, containing a graphic application program language - a specific CAD-system dependent interface program written in the graphic application program language - two CAD-system independent interface programs written in a common high level language lite FORTRAN - CAD-system independent product model data bases All these programs except the CAD-system have been developed in this work, and the use of the programs is demonstrated with an example.

Abstract:
This paper discusses a prototype of horizontally opposed-piston folded-cranktrain two-stroke diesel engine with combined supercharger and high-pressure common rail fuel system by Beijing Institute of Technology. The cranktrain dynamics, the thermodynamics (include the combustion process and the scavenging) are investigated, which is the main difference between this type of engine and conventional engines. The aim of the work is to design and develop a prototype of opposed-piston folded-cranktrain engine. The investigated results showed that maximum speeds of two pistons are all 13.99m/s, while the mean velocity is 9.4 m/s; the maximum acceleration on negative side is 3765 m/s2 when the piston is near the BDC and the maximum acceleration on positive side is 2944 m/s2 when the pistons is near the TDC; scavenging efficiency can get to 89% and the final air utilization is 55%. The prototype of opposed-piston folded-cranktrain engine has been developed.
