Abstract:
This article focuses on the US Defense Department planners who have opted to develop a single, affordable strike fighter flexible enough to match or surpass the capabilities of its varied predecessors. Efforts to build one plane for more than one armed service are risky—witness the failed attempt by General Dynamics and Grumman in the 1960s to develop the swing-wing F-111fighter/bomber for both the Air Force and the Navy. The prevailing belief today is that advanced integrated systems design and extensive simulation will help engineers avoid the pit-falls associated with combining the services’ diverse goals. To succeed, the department’s Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) Program will entail a degree of cooperation and frugality not seen previously among the American armed forces. At stake for the aerospace/defense industry is perhaps the largest US military procurement program ever. Although the aircraft from the JSF competition will be developed using some •of the most advanced engineering design techniques currently available, they will also have to satisfy today’s political and fiscal constraints.

Abstract:
AbstractDogmen are individuals who fight their pit bulls in matches against other pit bulls. This paper uses neutralization theory to examine the rationalizations of dogmen as they attempt to counter stigma and criminal identity in a world that is becoming increasingly intolerant of dogfighting. To maintain their rationalizations, the dogmen use four recurring techniques : (a) denial of injury;(b) condemnation of the condemners; (c) appeal to higher loyalties; and (d) a defense that says dogmen are good people (their deviance-dogfighting expunged by their good character). The authors conducted interviews with 31 individuals who fight and breed pit bulls and with significant others in the dogfighting enterprise, including Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) officials, veterinarians, and local law enforcement officers. The research also examined newspaper accounts of dogfighting. This article provides some insights into the social construction of reality of individuals who engage in an activity that most of us find reprehensible. As with any criminal/deviant behavior, understanding and subsequent solving of the problem begin with knowledge of the offender's perspective.

Abstract:
This paper is about public spirit, national monuments and a sign system in Lukiškės Square in Vilnius. Such a system is a part of national Policy, therefore, one should keep distinct the pure artistical and national identity ideas. Nowadays a sense of national pride is very important and at the same time a real problem in Lithuania. A nation always has an essential place, a system of symbols or an extraordinary monument. Lithuania is only getting ready to consider the issue of monuments and signs in all its aspects. That is why, according to the rules of Lukiškės Square architectural competition, it is demanded to solve this problem. A representative function is required. „The memory of an unknown partisan and fighter for Lithuania’s freedom will be memorialized“ a slogan incused on a stone panel proclaims in Lukiškės Square. But there are still no results. The conception of public space is unidentified, so an urban space and ordinary functional aspects are always muddled up. West European public space practice indicates that Renaissance squares are the most popular, multifunctional public spaces. The space system and nominal space hierarchy are very complicated and indefinite, therefore, the final result is under diferent interpretations. Memorialization of dedication to fighters for Lithuania’s freedom is of great importance, but practical square formation aspects, such as parking, fountain construction, etc., are also important. The Lithuanian Parliament adopted a resolution on Lukiškės Square functions (11 Feb. 1999), but pursuancee belongs to the Municipality. That is a mistake and a real problem because the Municipality’s activities are not transparent. Such problems must be solved by a Steering Committee which must be formed. Otherwise a qualitative result is impossible. In 2008 Lukiškės Square architectural competition was proclaimed. The format of the main task is double – urban and artistical aspects are declared. The result of this competition is an abstract artistical accent, but not a real representative memorial. The purpose of this work is to reveal the formation process of Lukiškės Square as the main square of Lithuania. The basic principles of the Square formation and those of erecting a monument to the Lithuanian freedom fighters are presented.

Suleiman, Elia. "The Occupation (and Life) Through an Absurdist Lens." Journal of Palestine Studies 32, no. 2 (January 1, 2003): 63–73. http://dx.doi.org/10.1525/jps.2003.32.2.63.

Full text
Abstract:
Elia Suleiman, born in Nazareth in 1960, is the first Palestinian filmmaker to be selected for the "official competition" of the Cannes International Film Festival: his Divine Intervention: A Chronicle of Love and Pain was not only one of the twenty-one films out of 939 entries chosen for the fifty-fifth festival in May 2002, it also won the Jury Prize and the Interna tional Critics Prize. Suleiman had already come to the attention of the 2001 Cannes Festival, where his short Cyber Palestine was shown at the "Directors' Fortnight." Though without formal training, Suleiman has been winning prizes since his first film, a short entitled Introduction to the End of an Argument, won the award for best experimental documentary-USA in 1991. This was followed by his 1992 short Homage by Assassination, which won a Rockefeller Prize. By the time he made his first full-length movie, Chronicle of a Disappearance (which won the prize for the best first-feature at the 1996 Venice International Film Festival), his style was already well developed: a progression of sketches——witty, surreal, ironic, often devastating——and a virtual absence of narrative; in the case of Chronicle, a main character (a filmmaker called E.S., played by Suleiman himself) appears in a number of the episodes, most of which shed harsh light on life in Nazareth, but his presence seems more accidental than part of a storyline. Film critic Stanley Kaufman of the New Republic called Chronicle of a Disappearance "a film of the absurd. If Ionesco had been a Palestinian and a filmmaker, he might have made it." While his recent film, Divine Intervention, is still very much an assemblage of vignettes, it does nonetheless have a semblance of narrative: a "central character" (again, a filmmaker named E.S., again played by Suleiman) shuttles between his hometown of Nazareth, where his father, beset by business woes, has a heart attack and lies dying; his apartment in East Jerusalem, where he is working on a screenplay; and a checkpoint between East Jerusalem and Ramallah, where he holds tender but wordless meetings in a parked car with his lover, a Ramallah woman hemmed in by borders and closures. In one of the checkpoint scenes that combines the visual beauty, whimsy, humor, and satire characteristic of the film, the hero inflates a large red balloon bearing the smiling visage of Yasir Arafat and releases it, creating havoc among the soldiers. Taking advantage of the ensuing confusion, the hero and his lover manage to speed through the checkpoint, while the camera follows the balloon as it soars over the landscape toward Jerusalem, floating over the rooftops of the Old City and past the Church of the Holy Sepulcher to a light on the Dome of the Rock. When Divine Intervention won the Jury Prize at Cannes, the New York Times (27 May 2002) called it "a Keatonesque exploration of the large and small absurdities of Palestinian life under occupation." And indeed, despite the humor, moments of tenderness, and laugh-out-loud sight gags, the film presents an all-too-realistic picture, pitiless and meticulous, of the devastating impact of occupation on Palestinian society both in Israel and in the occupied territories. Suleiman is witty and light, but dead serious; allergic to preaching, propaganda , and clichéé, but highly political. The underlying grimness of the film is relieved not only by the humor but by resort to fantasy: the hero, cruising a long a highway, casually tosses an apricot pit out of his car window and a tank blows up; a stunningly beautiful woman (the hero's lover) strides through a checkpoint, mesmerizing the soldiers with her fierce beauty, and a military watchtower collapses. The most elaborate such sequence is the spectacular "Ninja scene," a violently beautiful and stylized choreography wherein the same woman is imagined as a guerrilla fighter who dispatches (seemingly bloodlessly) a whole phalanx of Israeli sharpshooters who have been firing at her effigy in a shooting range. The meaning of the images, whose connectedness one to the next is not always immediately apparent, can leave the spectator temporarily puzzled; the New York Times of 7 October 2002 called them "cinematic riddles and visual puns, delivered in elegant deadpan." The cumulative impact, however, is clear, and the images themselves linger long after the film ends. New York Times critic A. O. Scott, while noting the film's "appearance of randomness," adds that there is "an oblique, elegant sense of structure here" and that "the interlocking series of setups, punch lines and non sequiturs add up to something touching, provocative, and wonderfully strange." Divine Intervention currently is being shown throughout Europe and will be opening in the Middle East and Israel in January 2003. Shown at the New York Film Festival in October 2002, it will open commercially in the United States in January. Suleiman, in Paris for the opening of his film, was interviewed by Linda Butler, associate editor of JPS, on 26 September 2002.

Soma, Samantha Isabella. "An Examination of Conflict Conversation in an Online Community: the Pie Fight at DailyKos.com." PDXScholar, 2006. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/1466.

Full text
Abstract:
The increasing popularity of the social web and online communities requires the attention of researchers of conflict resolution. Although there are many ways to resolve conflict offline, the ways in which conflict takes place within a native online context have not been much studied. Are any of the tools and strategies that are used to improve communication offline used successfully online, or are some other strategies taking their place? What communication patterns occur within an online community equipped with comment moderation capabilities? This research is a case study and addressed these questions by performing a qualitative analysis of comment conversations within two diaries that discussed a conflict event known as the Pie Fight within the Daily Kos community in June, 2005. The findings of this research are organized into three sections, which discuss behaviors related to Communication Style, Conflict Minimization or Avoidance, and community members' response to Comment Moderation (Ratings). Novel communication style behaviors which were noted included the use of cut-and-paste "paraphrasing" which was used to escalate conflict rather than resolving it, medium blaming when the writer's own words were quite obviously provocative, and extended leave-taking as a means of maintaining relationships before departing from the community. Conflict minimization or avoidance behaviors included the assumption that removal of discussion about the conflict by deleting an entire diary and comments threads would somehow resolve the disagreements included in them it, the use of benign verbal aggression which seemed to bring some segments of the community together, and the temporary or permanent departure from the community by members who took part in the conflict discussion. Ratings moderation created another point of conflict when negative ratings were threatened, although negative ratings were used mainly to address unproductive language rather than punish differences of opinion. The use of positive ratings to offer silent support or appreciation to members whose reasoned comments received a dismissive response was also observed. These findings could be used in future research about the suitability of online communities as sites of deliberative discussion.

Mohn, Augustinus. "Taking up arms in the fight for human rights : the development of German strategic culture since the end of the Cold War." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 2018. http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk:80/webclient/DeliveryManager?pid=238737.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis analyses the development of German strategic culture since the end of the Cold War. Since the end of the Cold War, Germany has participated in several international military interventions, for example in Kosovo and Afghanistan. This marked a departure from Germany's strategic behaviour during the Cold War, when the country pursued a foreign policy of military restraint. The dominant view in Germany at the time was that the gross human rights violations committed by the Nazi regime during the Second World War stipulated the need for the country to be a responsible international player. Responsibility was interpreted as a moral imperative to refrain from any military action abroad, and it formed an essential part of German strategic culture. The change in German strategic behaviour after the end of the Cold War thus poses the question as to why Germany changed its behaviour, and how this change has been facilitated in German strategic culture. To understand the post-Cold War change in Germany's strategic behaviour, it is necessary to understand the underlying mechanisms of change. The thesis sheds lights on these mechanisms by utilising a strategic culture approach. It argues that German executive decision-makers have incrementally modified German strategic culture in response to a changing strategic environment by utilising a human rights narrative. Instead of interpreting responsibility as an imperative for military restraint, the notion of responsibility was reframed as an imperative for protecting human rights abroad. Thus, the reconfiguration of German strategic culture rendered military intervention a justifiable instrument of German foreign policy. German Federal President Joachim Gauck epitomised this reconfiguration when, in 2014, he demanded that in the 'fight for human rights or the survival of innocent human beings, it is sometimes necessary to take up arms'.

Abstract:
Díky provozním tolerancím systému a drobným odchylkám vstupních dat v řídících jednotkách, dostává každé servo mírně odlišné povely a rozdíl v poloze serv vede k namáhání řídící plochy i k namáhání serv.

Abstract:
An idealized principal narrative course is reconstructed for the medieval Germanic dragon fight. The motifs reviewed include: the transformation of a man into a dragon whilst lying on treasure; the generation of a dragon from a corpse; the development of a tiny worm into a vast dragon; the offering of a princess’s hand to a champion; the champion’s protective clothing; his ambushing of the dragon between its cave-lair and a water-source; the dragon’s uniquely vulnerable spot; the champion’s named sword; the special properties of the dragon’s blood. A pair of recurring narrative subroutines are also investigated: in one the champion intervenes on a lion’s behalf upon coming across it engaged in a fight with a dragon, and after killing the dragon has lifelong loyal pet in the lion; in the other the champion is cast into a snake pit, with varying outcomes.

Abstract:
The road to hell is paved with good intentions . . . so the old saying goes. In this Gallery I want to show you that this can be indeed true, but it is also true that the road to hell can be paved with evil intentions—sometimes all the way down to the pit of fire. Elements cannot really be described as coming from hell, nor can molecules, but they can produce effects that can only be described as satanic. Some elements that exist naturally can be very toxic, such as beryllium and lead, and the same is true of some natural molecules, such as atropine. We have seen in other Galleries that when chemists discover a natural molecule which has desirable properties, it is often possible to make a safer version that retains these properties, or even enhances them, while unwanted side-effects can be eliminated or at least toned down. The opposite is also possible. If the desired property of a molecule is its ability to kill, then it is possible to refine that aspect. What was merely dangerous can be made maliciously deadly. We begin our tour of the portraits of Gallery 8 with an inspection of one of these terrible molecules. Could Adolf Hitler have saved his Third Reich from defeat? Quite possibly. What he needed was a secret weapon to wipe out the Allied troops when they invaded the Normandy beaches of northern France on D-day, 6 June 1944. Then with a quick victory in the west he could have rushed his troops to meet the oncoming onslaught of Russian armies from the east, and maybe even have wiped out those invaders as well. Hitler was fond of secret weapons. Some, like the jet fighter, the V1 flying bomb and the V2 rocket bomb, were triumphs of engineering and did a lot of damage, but they were generally developed too late to save his empire. In fact Hitler had one secret weapon that was very cheap and easy to make, and that would have stopped advancing armies dead, but he never used it.

Abstract:
At the very beginning of Fight Club, the Platonic critique of art and everyday life is echoed when the nameless protagonist, the Edward Norton character, says that with insomnia “nothing’s real. Everything’s far away. Everything’s a copy of a copy of a copy.” With that clear invitation, this chapter argues that Fincher intends a conversation with the Platonic critique of appearances. Fight clubs—in their retreat from the world and providing for meaningless but intense feeling—are to be understood as allegories of works of art in a consumer society that enable temporary release from it through pain induced enlivenment. Fight Club goes on to track how a political aesthetic can topple into fascist aestheticized politics. Finally, enlisting T. W. Adorno’s “Freudian Theory and the Pattern of Fascist Propaganda,” the chapter argues that the bond between the charismatic Tyler Durden / Brad Pitt character and his fascist followers is deeply akin to that between Donald Trump and his followers.

Abstract:
This chapter identifies the key elements of Fight Club's transition from novel to film. Fight Club is in some ways a paradoxical film: both a product and a critique of big business. Fox and Regency, two big players in Hollywood film production, put 67 million dollars into Fight Club because the talent package was strong. They believed the film would do well — and despite a less-than-hoped-for initial box office run, they have been proved right. Emerging from the world of advertising and music videos, Fight Club's director David Fincher has now established himself as a modern-day auteur. The chapter then considers the performances of the film's cast, including Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, and Helena Bonham Carter. It also comments on the marketing of the film. Fox did not know how to sell Fight Club and so seriously misjudged its marketing and release. Fincher's original and seditious concepts for the marketing were rejected for more conventional action-orientated fare, aimed at a male youth market. This backfired in the post-Columbine climate and failed to connect with the broader youth market, which has now found significance in the film and elevated it to cult status.

Abstract:
This introductory chapter discusses the importance of studying David Fincher's Fight Club (1999). Studying Fight Club is a response to a number of issues. Firstly, the film has, since 2009, been an optional examined text in the WJEC's A2 Film Studies course in the UK. Secondly, the film's director, David Fincher, and the key cast of Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, and Helena Bonham Carter remain powerful Hollywood voices, whose work range from the mainstream to the art house. Fincher in particular is now widely regarded as a contemporary auteur with the facility to explore the zeitgeist in a stylish and substantial way. Finally, there is the need to revisit Fight Club in terms of its broad cultural impact and continuing relevance. The film still packs a powerful punch, with its perceived machismo remaining its most frequently explored aspect and indeed gender identity and post-millennial male anxiety are certainly important critical angles. This book pushes the analysis of the film beyond gender, exploring it in terms of its attack on postmodern culture via a proper understanding of Friedrich Nietzsche: a philosopher who is often negatively attributed to Fight Club's philosophy.

Abstract:
This chapter sets the scene for Ti difé boulé. The text begins with a folkloric tone: it is nighttime after people in the village have finished work. Fireflies are flitting about. A woman called Lamèsi announces that Grinn Prominnin, who has been absent for a long time, has returned with news and ideas. This visionary calls a gathering to find out what happened to the narrator’s brothers and sisters—that is, to understand the crises that have occurred within the family over the past two hundred years and to identify “the traces they have left in our blood” (14). The narrator has learned to speak “tongues” and emerges from “the realm of the past” to tell his audience the story of Haiti’s history and what went wrong. The narrator situates the book’s focus in the revolutionary crucible of the years 1789-1820 when the ascendant indigenous elite snatched up the unprecedented successes of the self-emancipated revolutionaries and freedom fighters.

Abstract:
In this chapter Trouillot cross-examines received understandings of Haitian history among the minority of the population that has had the opportunity to attend school. References to folkloric characters in the text disappear, and Ti difé boulé sou istoua Ayiti turns to an analysis of the divisions in social classes during the period of French colonization in Saint-Domingue, portraying the complex and conflicting coalitions of wealthy colonists, black and mulatto freedmen, whites and enslaved people. Each coalition contained its own hidden contradictions and differing priorities: among the enslaved there were domestic slaves, skilled urban slaves, overseers and field laborers. Power-holding wealthy plantation owners and French commissioners exploited racism to draw middle class and lower-class whites into their conspiracy. This chapter establishes the major axes of Saint-Domingue’s organization: the large plantations, slavery, sugarcane monoculture and dependency on France. Trouillot shows that the revolutionary leaders were enslaved people at the top of their social class. Many of them had known forms of freedom, responsibility, leadership and political experience. This political acumen placed those enslaved people and freedmen in a position to seize the reins of power. The powerful plantation owners, commissioners and the military were able to retain dominance providing their coalition remained intact. The white coalition of local plantation owners and the French commissioners underwent a bitter split, opening the way for the enslaved population to rise up and fight for freedom.

Abstract:
Samuel Beckett excused himself from his affair with Pamela Mitchell with a syntactically evocative phrase: ‘It is I the hurter of the two’. The definite article is telling: How it is (1964 [1961]) universalises one cruel, asymmetric, pseudo-amorous relationship, deducing from it ‘billions’ of similarly helpless, prostrate, mud-bound ‘creatures’, exchanging roles as torturers and victims in a leniently egalitarian distribution of suffering. Titled ‘Pim’ from 1958 until its publication, Beckett’s last, long, prose-like work happened to coincide with the Algerian War of Independence, during which the French authorities tortured captured revolutionary fighters with scant concern for the European Convention on Human Rights. Their pretext was semantic: a novel legal category was invented, ‘pris les armes à la main’, or PAM—a likely homophone both of How it is’s protagonist and of Beckett’s recent ex. Using contemporaneous news reports and recent feminist historical scholarship, ‘Safe Words’ argues that the author’s biographic reminiscences have been transposed onto documented examples of state-sanctioned torture of Algerian women in particular. The essay tentatively concludes that everyday, prosaic acts of gendered domination might not be quite as qualitatively different from official violence as certain readers would wish to believe.

Frances, Allen. "The myth and reality of mental illness." In Thomas Szasz, edited by C. V. Haldipur, James L. Knoll, and Eric v. d. Luft, 169–76. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198813491.003.0014.

Abstract:
There are points of reconciliation between the uncompromising libertarian philosophy of Szasz and what he refers to as “real-world psychiatry” (i.e., problems that clinicians face in helping the so-called “mentally ill”). Szasz’s principled stance against the abuses of psychiatry advocates an antipaternalistic approach. He performed great service, exposing the risks of coercive psychiatry, fighting for patient empowerment, freedom, and dignity. The system no longer exists where there are several thousand patients in state hospitals—many inappropriately admitted into “snake pits”—but we now have to fight the criminalization of mental illness, with the mentally ill in jails and the homeless living in streets. It would be wonderful to have Szasz still alive to lead the movement to free the severely ill from prisons, just as he helped to free them from hospitals.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper documents the thermal design process required to provide effective thermal management for an airborne, military computer, consisting of 24 modules (two P/S modules and 22 PWB modules), which are edge-cooled to two cast, pin fin coldwalls. The computer chassis is mounted in an electronics pod mounted underneath the centerline of a fighter aircraft. The pod consists of several electronics bays and a self-contained, air-cycle, environmental control system (ECS). The computer chassis is mounted in the forward bay, and the ECS is mounted in the rear bay of the electronics pod. The ECS is an air-cycle refrigeration system, which operates on captured ram air directed by an inlet/diffuser to an expansion turbine. This turbine produces low-pressure, chilled-air, which is then directed through an air-to-liquid, load heat exchanger to produce chilled-liquid. The chilled liquid is piped through small liquid lines to the forward bay of the pod, where the air-cooled, computer chassis is located. The chilled liquid is converted back to chilled-air in an air-to-liquid heat exchanger. The chilled-air is supplied to the forward bay volume and is drawn through the computer chassis coldwalls by a fan integral to the computer chassis. The temperature of the chilled-air, produced in this manner, becomes a strong function of the altitude and Mach number of the fighter aircraft, because of the effect of these two parameters on the ram air mass flow rate and temperature at the inlet to the expansion turbine. The mass flow of the air used to cool the chassis is also a variable, because the density of the air is a function of the flight altitude and the fan has altitude-dependent, operating characteristics. This fan provides the flow of air through the chassis. Emphasis is placed in the design process on the effect of the operating characteristics of the fan at altitude and the determination of the system performance curve associated with the pin fin coldwalls. This performance curve is controlled by the pressure drop characteristics of the pin fin coldwalls, which are a function of the Fanning f-factor and Colburn j-factor characteristics of the cast pin fin design. Design examples are used to demonstrate the design process.

Abstract:
There is an increasing interest in developing renewable energy systems to address the increasing global energy demand and fight climate change. One emerging technology is the transpired air collector, which is a unique type of corrugated and perforated sheet metal installed in front of a building to absorb incident sunlight to preheat the building air intake. As the airflow behaviour in the channel influences the air heat gain, it is important to understand the fluid dynamics within the transpired air collector to maximize its efficiency. A full scale experimental setup using a commercial transpired air collector was built in a laboratory environment. Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) was used to measure two-dimensional velocity fields at different air flow rates and at different locations inside the channel. PIV data were used to compute various turbulent characteristics of the air flow. It was found that the mean velocity peaks tended towards the flat construction wall side. The profiles of the Reynolds stress indicated a significant momentum transfer from the corrugation wall by the turbulent velocity field towards the bulk flow. Results demonstrate that the turbulence produced by the corrugation waveform dominates the entire channel.
