Abstract. In the last decades, surveys produced with geomatic techniques are increasingly used for the study and conservation of the built heritage because they automatically collect large amounts of data with an accuracy and objectivity that could not be achieved with traditional techniques. As in other fields of digital and spatial humanities, the combination of spatial data with archival and secondary sources provides new tools for reconstructing the history, construction, and transformation of a historic architecture. The new digital survey of Pitti Palace, which was carried out between 201

Abstract. The paper presents the first results of a multidisciplinary research project launched to support the conservation and restoration of the stone façades of the Pitti Palace in Florence with innovative techniques from the fields of geomatics and diagnostic analysis. Monitoring campaigns are periodically conducted on the façades of the palace to identify stone elements in critical conditions; such surveys primarily require close and careful observation of the façade, for which a crane basket is required. Abstract. The description of a historic building can be made by considering many different aspects: stylistic, technological, formal, function-related, etc. In Architecture, as in any artistic form, intangible elements also play an essential role and are closely related to individual interpretation; therefore, achieving an objective description is challenging, and several efforts have been undertaken over time to reach the goal.Nested hierarchical or complex multi-dimensional relationship structures can be defined to represent various interrelationships between a huge variety of elements and t

Relevance of the study. The object of research in the history of music usually is the spiritual component of artistic culture, it's genre- and style-centric processes of the art itself. Specific conditions of artistic artifacts's existence, locations where the premiere and subsequent performances took place, draw less scientific attention. At the same time, without taking this information into account, the musico-historical aspects of the past appear devalued and deformed; certain things remain not understood completely, certain moments fall out of sight.

Jacob Burckhardt called Rubens’ Consequences of War (Palazzo Pitti in Florence) as the defining painting of the whole of the Thirty Years’ War. This famous painting was completed in 1638 for Ferdinand II de Medici, the Grand Duke of Tuscany. Rubens carefully explained the content of his allegory in a surviving letter dated 12 March 1638 to Justus Sustermans, the Flemish painter working in the services of the Medici in Florence. This work was repeatedly studied and interpreted. We are also partly aware of the circumstances around its creation as well as later responses to it. The National Galle

Titian made a painting of Mary Magdalene for Vittoria Colonna, perhaps identifiable with a painting in the Pitti Palace. Despite considerable scholarly attention over the last thirty years, scholars have not reached a consensus about most aspects of this exchange. Central to the debate has been the question of nudity: was it possible to have a devotional image that so knowingly exhibits female flesh? Can a painting gleefully subvert the rules of decorum and still discharge its function as a devotional image? Recent scholarship on the visual culture of female spirituality at this time helps ill

Abstract Opera was born in Florence at the end of the sixteenth century. It derived almost seamlessly from its immediate precursor, the intermedio, or lavish between-the-acts spectacle presented in conjunction with a play on festive occasions. Plays were spoken, and their stage settings were simple: a street backed by palace façades for tragedies, by lower-class houses for comedies; for satyr plays or pastorals, the setting was a woodland or country scene. Meanwhile the ever-growing magnificence of state celebrations in Medici Florence on occasions such as dynastic weddings gave rise to a vari

Abstract La Dafne, a “fable” by Ottavio Rinuccini set to music by Jacopo Peri and Jacopo Corsi, was the first opera. “It was performed in a small room and sung privately,” according to Pietro Bardi, who was there (seep. 8 above). It is quite possible that Peri was first apprised of Corsi’s and Rinuccini’s project “as early as 1594,” as he himself states (p. 15 below); but the most informed guess as to its first performance would place it in the carnival season of 1597-98. There are no questions, on the other hand, about the date of the very pub!ic premiere of the second opera, L’Euridice. That

Three-dimensional acquisition techniques, reality-based modelling and virtual reality are tools used in Digital Humanities prevalently for displaying the results of a study, but they can also suggest new methods of investigation to humanities scholars. In a case study regarding art history, these techniques made it possible to recreate the layout of the Sala di Saturno in Pitti Palace (Florence) in the 17th century, based on information obtained from archive documents on the tapestries designed for that hall and a 3D model expressly elaborated with geomatic techniques.
