Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

 Los métodos emlpleados en la investigación son por observación directa cuando se analizan los modelos existentes en el mercado, exploratorio, empírico-analítico debido a que se selecciona un modelo y luego se analiza con los programas computacionales como el Matlab y SolidWorks, es una investigación propositiva porque elige una la solución efectiva del problema.;

Abstract:

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
A computer model was developed to simulate the varying depths of water applied to the ground due to the intermittent movements of a typical center pivot. The stop–go model inputs include the sprinkler application depth, the sprinkler pattern, that pattern’s wetted radius, the center pivot’s % timer setting, the move cycle time, and the end tower maximum travel speed. The model outputs were the depth of application in the pivot’s movement direction, the distribution uniformity (DU), and the coefficient of uniformity (CU). The results revealed that the pivot circular application uniformity is mostly a function of the move distance as a percent of the sprinklers’ wetted radius. This, in turn, is a function of the percent timer setting, the cycle time, and the end tower travel speed. Due to this, the high-speed center pivots had corresponding lower application uniformities compared to low-speed machines, and sprinklers with larger wetted radii resulted in better uniformity. Shortening the cycle time also resulted in higher uniformity coefficients. Based on these results, it is recommended that the run time be set based on the pivot end-tower’s travel speed and sprinkler wetted radius, such that the end tower move distance is equivalent to the sprinkler wetted radius. This will reduce wear to the tower motors due to the on–off cycling, especially for slow travel settings and for sprinklers with larger wetted radii. The ponding depths at different percent of the move distance, for the potential runoff, were estimated, which were set to be equivalent to the wetted radius.

Inparticular, it addresses cases in which the presence of a microstructure, consisting ofregularly spaced pivoted beams, entails effects that are well described by generalizedcontinuum models, i.e. models in which the deformation energy density depends notonly on the gradient of the placement but also on the second (and possibly higher)gradients of it. In the Introduction, the state of the art concerning generalizedcontinua and their applications for the description of fibrous structures is describedand some relevant open problems are highlighted. In Chapter 1 and 2 a rigoroushomogenization procedure based on Gamma-convergence arguments is performedfor a lattice (truss-like) structure and for a discrete 1D system (Hencky-type beammodel). In Chapter 3, a variational treatment is employed to formulate acomputationally convenient approach. In Chapter 4 some experimental resultsconcerning the behavior of the structure in various kinds of deformation arediscussed. This motivated the investigation performed in Chapter 5, in which DirectMethods of Calculus of Variations are applied to Euler beams in large deformationsunder distributed load

Daza, Sobrino Gabriel.

Full text
Abstract:
The skills of the well-known competent pivots are identified within the present survey on the ASOBAL league during the 2006-07 seasons. A pivot is defined as the player whose skills are developed in the phase of attack, therefore, due to his position; he is decisive for the intervention and conditioning of his partners' actions (Román, 993). The research analyzes the figure of the pivot from the perspective of a competent sportsperson, gathering the characteristic abilities and the analysis of the playing actions in the high competition. The pivot’s skills are presented from the developmental functional structure of the game. From this approach, they are classified and the dimensions are defined for the observation of the player’s activity. In the handball competition, situations in the match are not identical to the ones in training and therefore, the sportsperson has to select the closest alternative among all those they know. Just a few times, they carry out real new skills they do not support, at least partially, from previous learning (Riera, 1997). To get to know these abilities, two data collection techniques are used: the interview to current skilled coaches and the observation of the pivots' competition. From the matches' analysis, it is emphasized that the pivots solve playing situations through a reduced number of concatenation of skills. The activity of the pivot is constituted from the combination of seven basic skills: earning the position, blocking, feinting, launching, disassociating, holding the odd in number opponent back and keeping up in distance from the action taking place. Among those mentioned before, skills which use the body and involve taking some advantage on the adversary stand out. Furthermore, skills of the pivot are articulated through four basic intentions: controlling the game, demanding the ball, finishing and to help.

Abstract:

Saville, Allan Charles. "Numerical simulation of the Pivotal internal combustion engine." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Mechanical Engineering, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/6625.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes the development of a one-dimensional internal combustion engine simulation program for the Pivotal two-stroke engine. The Pivotal two-stroke engine has many features in common with the standard reciprocating piston engine, but differs in its novel kinematics, which are based around a four bar linkage. The new engine arrangement opens up many new design options and required a flexible and specific simulation tool for research and development. The initial project goals were to develop a simulation code, validate the code against engine data and develop a user interface for easier application. However, it was not possible to realise all of these goals and the project was mostly concerned with the development of the simulation numerical code. Validation will be required before the simulation tool can be used with confidence. Engine simulation is a relatively mature field of research and the simulation program includes many established standard methods. The simulation incorporates a standard single zone thermodynamic cylinder model and a Riemann quasi-one-dimensional finite volume gas dynamics scheme, which includes total variation diminishing variable extrapolation. The calculation of flow through valves uses standard equations for orifice flow and the application to pipe boundary conditions utilises the propagation of characteristic information out of the pipe boundary. Simulation of reed valve deflection has been implemented with the finite element method using direct integration in time. The entire code has been implemented in the Fortran programming language using Compaq Visual Fortran 6.5. To establish a flexible simulation the program has been devised so that the input text data file determines the arrangement of the engine, allowing most engine configurations to be modelled with the one simulation tool. Summary data, including engine power, is outputted to a text file, which can be read by any text editor. Detailed simulation results are written to Matlab mat-files, which require Matlab 5.3, or greater, to open and analyze. In its current form the simulation code is capable of running arbitrary engine arrangements, including the Pivotal engine, and can predict the performance of these engines. However, the code is un-validated against real engine data. Where possible sub-models have been tested and proven against special test cases that have an analytic solution. The next logical extension beyond the current project is to thoroughly validate and compare the engine simulation against real engine test data. Other areas in which the code could be improved include; extending the simulation code to incorporate more advanced models and improving the ease with which engine simulations can be set-up, run and analysed.

Keränen, N. (Niina). "Autistisen nuoren puheen kuntoutus pivotal response training -tekniikalla:tapaustutkimus." Master's thesis, University of Oulu, 2013. http://urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi:oulu-201312051981.

Full text
Abstract:
Tämän pro gradu -tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää, onko lyhyellä PRT-menetelmään perustuvalla interventiolla vaikutusta autistisen henkilön jäljittelytaitojen kehitykseen sekä kommunikatiivisten aloitteiden ja puheen määrään. Lapsuusiän autismi on neurobiologinen keskushermoston kehityshäiriö (Minshew, 1996), jonka syytä ei tarkasti tunneta. Lapsuusiän autismi ilmenee sosiaalisen vuorovaikutuksen vaikeutena, viestinnän ja kommunikaation häiriönä ja kapea-alaisena juuttuvana käyttäytymisenä (ks. esim. Loncola & Graig-Unkefer, 2005; Mundy & Stella, 2000). Oireiden ja erilaisten taitojen esiintyminen on henkilötasolla kuitenkin hyvin vaihtelevaa (Lord ym., 2000; Timonen, 1991; Williams, 1996, s. 8). Vaikka autismin oireet saattavat muuttua radikaalistikin lapsen kasvaessa, ne säilyvät silti läpi elämän erilaisina sosiaalisen vuorovaikutuksen ja kommunikoinnin vaikeuksina sekä poikkeavina kiinnostuksen kohteina (WHO, 1999). Autististen henkilöiden kommunikointiin liittyviä keskeisimpiä piirteitä ovat aloitteettomuus (Stone & Caro-Martinez, 1990), kykenemättömyys jaettuun tarkkaavaisuuteen (American Psychiatric Association, 2000; Mundy & Crowson, 1997) ja imitoinnin kommunikatiivisesti käytön puuttuminen(Southgate, Gergely, & Csibra, 2008; Hamilton, 2008). Pivotal Response Training (PRT) tarkoittaa ydinvalmiuksien harjaannuttamisohjelmaa.

Dupree, Kami M. "Secondary Mathematics Teachers’ Responses to Pivotal Teaching Moments." DigitalCommons@USU, 2019. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/7535.

Full text
Abstract:
This study used a multiple case study design to explore the occurrence of pivotal teaching moments, teachers’ responses to these moments, and teachers’ own perceptions of the impact of these moments on their own knowledge development. The participants were six practicing secondary mathematics teachers. The researcher collected data from teacher created lesson plan outlines, observations of the same lesson delivered to two different classes, participant interviews, and teacher reflection journals. The researcher reviewed the lesson plan outlines prior to observations to understand teachers’ anticipations. During observations, the researcher recorded observed pivotal teaching moments, corresponding teacher responses to these moments, and instructional changes between the two observed lessons. Interviews allowed the researcher to identify in-the-moment teacher thinking and teachers’ motivations for their responses. Teacher reflection journals provided insights related to teachers’ classroom actions and learning. The results confirmed and built upon existing classifications of pivotal teaching moments and teachers’ responses, while also identifying seven themes related to teacher motivations for their responses. Teachers’ perceptions of changes in their own knowledge base occurred for their content knowledge as well as their pedagogical content knowledge. Future research should explore how pivotal teaching moments are created, how teacher-student interactions shape teacher knowledge development, and examine the role of teachers’ reflections about their practice in their knowledge development

Abstract:
The neural machine translation model has suffered from the lack of large-scale parallel corpora. In contrast, we humans can learn multi-lingual translations even without parallel texts by referring our languages to the external world. To mimic such human learning behavior, we employ images as pivots to enable zero-resource translation learning. However, a picture tells a thousand words, which makes multi-lingual sentences pivoted by the same image noisy as mutual translations and thus hinders the translation model learning. In this work, we propose a progressive learning approach for image-pivoted zero-resource machine translation. Since words are less diverse when grounded in the image, we first learn word-level translation with image pivots, and then progress to learn the sentence-level translation by utilizing the learned word translation to suppress noises in image-pivoted multi-lingual sentences. Experimental results on two widely used image-pivot translation datasets, IAPR-TC12 and Multi30k, show that the proposed approach significantly outperforms other state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract:
The Leaf-type Isosceles-Trapezoidal Flexural (LITF) pivot consists of two compliant beams and two rigid-bodies. For a single LITF pivot, the range of motion is small while the center-shift is relatively large. The capability of performance can be improved greatly by the combination of four LITF pivots. Base on the pseudo-rigid-body model (PRBM) of a LITF pivot, a method to construct the Quadri-LITF pivots is presented by regarding a single LITF pivot (or double-LITF pivot) as a the configurable flexure module. Ten types of Q-LITF pivots are synthesized. Compared with the single LIFT pivot, the stroke becomes larger, and stiffness becomes smaller. Four of them have the increased center-shift. The other four have the decreased center-shift. One of the quadruple LITF pivots is selected as the examples to explain the proposed method. The comparison between PRBM and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) result shows the validity and effectiveness of the method.

Full text
Abstract:
The Pivotal™ Engine was conceived by Pivotal Engineering LTD to overcome some of the inherent problems associated with a conventional two-cycle engine, such as high wear rates and friction losses due to piston tilt and large port openings, reliability problems due to lack of control over piston temperatures and high oil consumption. The Pivotal engine is an Otto cycle two-stroke engine. The engine is assembled from 500cc modules utilizing a rectangular piston that pivots on a plain bearing at one end. The pivoting motion of the piston allows coolant to enter the piston through the centre of the pivot giving temperature control of the combustion chamber while restraining the piston so it has little or no contact with the chamber walls. Although friction loss, temperature control and oil consumption problems have thus been mitigated, prototype engines still experienced problems with high compression seal wear rates. Compression seals run in a reciprocating motion along a flat chamber wall, somewhat analogous to piston rings in a conventional engine, although velocity varies along the seal length. The goal of this research is therefore to select and test compression seals materials to obtain an adequate working life in the Pivotal engine. Based on the rotational tribometer results, the most promising chamber coating so far is plasma sprayed iron with molybdenum and the most promising seal material is reaction bonded silicon nitride.

Full text
Abstract:
Tilting pad journal bearing has its wide application in turbomachinery. For years, frictionless contact has been assumed for all the contact types in bearing coefficients prediction of tilting pad bearings. Existing experimental data demonstrates contact friction does present in pivots and can prevent pads from effective tilting, which is especially true for the surface contact pivot, e.g. ball-socket pivot. However, no open literature is available to discuss individual pad motion with consideration of pivot contact friction and document the effects on the dynamic behaviors of tilting pad bearings. This paper tries to improve the understanding in this area by discussing the pad motion of a tilting pad bearing with ball-socket pivots subject to pivot friction. A model, which couples the journal motion, hydrodynamic pressure from oil film and contact pressure within the pivots, is established. Instead of Hertz contact, a conformal contact model is applied for the ball-socket contact. Through the coupled transient analyses, the effects of contact friction coefficients, bearing dynamic and static loading, and pivot size on pads motion of a 5-pads load-on-pad bearing are considered and compared. The results show that the presence of friction within ball-socket pivots does not guarantee “locked up” pads motion, but only limits pads from effective tilting for a given range of friction coefficients. Larger dynamic load increases pad tilting amplitude; this does not mean that enlarged tilting magnitudes reduce pivot friction moments for the pads. With varying bearing loads, the pivot friction could result in non-synchronous motion of pads tilting and pivots deformation and bring these non-synchronous components into the journal vibration. Size-reduced pivots are found to diminish the effects of pivot friction and offer preferred pads dynamics and journal vibration.

Abstract:
Cross-Spring Flexural Pivot (CSFP) has some advantages compared with rigid bearing. However, this kind of flexural pivot is limited in the field of precision positioning due to its small motion stroke, large axis drift, and sensitivity to temperature, etc. In this paper, topology structures of the CSFP were analyzed through defining different geometric parameters λ, spring crossing angle α, and spring number N. Characteristics of stiffness, axis drift, maximum stress, and temperature drift were compared and summarized by the Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Ultimately, a class of flexural pivots, called Inner and Outer Ring Flexural Pivots (IORFP), were selected for their excellent comprehensive performances. This type of flexural pivots has some significant advantages, such as large stroke, approximate zero axis drift and no temperature drift. Finally, the stiffness characteristic of IORFP with different geometrical parameters λ was compared by FEA, and law of stiffness variation was obtained. When λ is 0.1273, the IORFP has linear stiffness characteristics.

Abstract:
The accurate prediction of the forced performance of tilting pad journal bearings (TPJB) relies on coupling a fluid film model that includes thermal energy transport, and on occasion fluid inertia, to the structural stiffness of the pads’ pivots and the thermomechanical deformation of the pads’ surfaces. Often enough, the flexibility of both pads and pivots is ignored prior to the bearing actual operation; practice dictating that force coefficients, damping in particular, decrease dramatically due to pivot flexibility. Even in carefully conducted experiments, components’ flexibilities are invoked to explain dramatic differences between measurements and predictions. A multiple-year test program at TAMU has demonstrated the dynamic forced response of TPJBs can be modeled accurately with matrices of constant stiffness K, damping C, and added mass M coefficients. The K-C-M model, representing frequency independent force coefficients, is satisfactory for excitation frequencies less or equal to the shaft synchronous speed. However, as shown by the authors in Ref. [1], pivot flexibility reduces the applicability of the simple constant parameter model to much lower excitation frequencies. Presently, a fluid film flow model predicts the journal eccentricity and force coefficients of a five-pad rocker-back TPJB tested at TAMU under a load-between-pad (LBP) configuration. The predictions agree well with the test results provided the model uses actual hot bearing clearances and an empirical characterization of the pivot stiffness. A study follows to determine the effects of pad preload, r¯p = 0.0, 0.27 (test article) and 0.50, as well as the load orientation, LBP and load-on-pad (LOP), on bearing performance with an emphasis on ascertaining the configuration with most damping and stiffness, largest film thickness, and the least drag friction. In the study, a rigid pivot and two flexible pivots are considered throughout. Further examples present the effective contribution of the pads’ mass and mass moment of inertia and film fluid inertia on the bearing force coefficients. To advance results of general character, predictions are shown versus Sommerfeld number (S), a design parameter proportional to shaft speed and decreasing with applied load. Both LBP and LOP configurations show similar performance characteristics; the journal eccentricity increasing with pivot flexibility. For LBP and LOP bearings with 0.27 preload, pivot flexibility decreases dramatically the bearing damping coefficients, in particular at the low end of S, i.e., large loads. The model and predictions aid to better design TPJBs supporting large specific loads.

Abstract:
Flexure pivot based oscillators can advantageously replace the hairspring and balance wheel, the time base used in mechanical watches, by drastically reducing friction. However, flexure pivots have drawbacks including gravity sensitivity and restoring torque nonlinearity. In previous work, we introduced a novel gravity insensitive flexure pivot (GIFP) to solve the problem of gravity sensitivty, but no analytical formulation for the restoring torque nonlinearity was found. In this paper, we use numerical simulation to find an empirical expression for restoring torque nonlinearity. We use this expression to find an analytical formula for the rotational stiffness of GIFP. This formula gives an explicit relationship between restoring torque nonlinearity and the isochronism of the corresponding harmonic oscillator. The results also apply to the widely used generalized cross-spring pivot.
