Abstract:
Free braided pivotal categories are equivalent to free strict monoidal categories on a graph with relations. This is important in the study of knot invariants in that new invariants can be constructed simply by finding suitable strict monoidal categories.<br>This is demonstrated by developing the formal language of strict monoidal categories on a graph with relations, creating categories with relations corresponding to the Reidemeister moves of knot theory and finally showing that these categories are in fact free braided pivotal categories and further equivalent to the categories of link diagrams from knot theory.

This thesis focuses on the mathematical modeling of fibrous structures having somepeculiar properties (high strength-to-weight ratio and very good toughness infracture), whose mechanical behavior escapes from standard Cauchy elasticity. Inparticular, it addresses cases in which the presence of a microstructure, consisting ofregularly spaced pivoted beams, entails effects that are well described by generalizedcontinuum models, i.e. models in which the deformation energy density depends notonly on the gradient of the placement but also on the second (and possibly higher)gradients of it. In the Introduction, the state of the art concerning generalizedcontinua and their applications for the description of fibrous structures is describedand some relevant open problems are highlighted. In Chapter 1 and 2 a rigoroushomogenization procedure based on Gamma-convergence arguments is performedfor a lattice (truss-like) structure and for a discrete 1D system (Hencky-type beammodel). In Chapter 3, a variational treatment is employed to formulate acomputationally convenient approach. In Chapter 4 some experimental resultsconcerning the behavior of the structure in various kinds of deformation arediscussed. This motivated the investigation performed in Chapter 5, in which DirectMethods of Calculus of Variations are applied to Euler beams in large deformationsunder distributed load

Daza, Sobrino Gabriel.

Full text
Abstract:
The skills of the well-known competent pivots are identified within the present survey on the ASOBAL league during the 2006-07 seasons. A pivot is defined as the player whose skills are developed in the phase of attack, therefore, due to his position; he is decisive for the intervention and conditioning of his partners' actions (Román, 993). The research analyzes the figure of the pivot from the perspective of a competent sportsperson, gathering the characteristic abilities and the analysis of the playing actions in the high competition. The pivot’s skills are presented from the developmental functional structure of the game. From this approach, they are classified and the dimensions are defined for the observation of the player’s activity. In the handball competition, situations in the match are not identical to the ones in training and therefore, the sportsperson has to select the closest alternative among all those they know. Just a few times, they carry out real new skills they do not support, at least partially, from previous learning (Riera, 1997). To get to know these abilities, two data collection techniques are used: the interview to current skilled coaches and the observation of the pivots' competition. From the matches' analysis, it is emphasized that the pivots solve playing situations through a reduced number of concatenation of skills. The activity of the pivot is constituted from the combination of seven basic skills: earning the position, blocking, feinting, launching, disassociating, holding the odd in number opponent back and keeping up in distance from the action taking place. Among those mentioned before, skills which use the body and involve taking some advantage on the adversary stand out. Furthermore, skills of the pivot are articulated through four basic intentions: controlling the game, demanding the ball, finishing and to help.

Abstract:

Saville, Allan Charles. "Numerical simulation of the Pivotal internal combustion engine." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Mechanical Engineering, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/6625.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes the development of a one-dimensional internal combustion engine simulation program for the Pivotal two-stroke engine. The Pivotal two-stroke engine has many features in common with the standard reciprocating piston engine, but differs in its novel kinematics, which are based around a four bar linkage. The new engine arrangement opens up many new design options and required a flexible and specific simulation tool for research and development. The initial project goals were to develop a simulation code, validate the code against engine data and develop a user interface for easier application. However, it was not possible to realise all of these goals and the project was mostly concerned with the development of the simulation numerical code. Validation will be required before the simulation tool can be used with confidence. Engine simulation is a relatively mature field of research and the simulation program includes many established standard methods. The simulation incorporates a standard single zone thermodynamic cylinder model and a Riemann quasi-one-dimensional finite volume gas dynamics scheme, which includes total variation diminishing variable extrapolation. The calculation of flow through valves uses standard equations for orifice flow and the application to pipe boundary conditions utilises the propagation of characteristic information out of the pipe boundary. Simulation of reed valve deflection has been implemented with the finite element method using direct integration in time. The entire code has been implemented in the Fortran programming language using Compaq Visual Fortran 6.5. To establish a flexible simulation the program has been devised so that the input text data file determines the arrangement of the engine, allowing most engine configurations to be modelled with the one simulation tool. Summary data, including engine power, is outputted to a text file, which can be read by any text editor. Detailed simulation results are written to Matlab mat-files, which require Matlab 5.3, or greater, to open and analyze. In its current form the simulation code is capable of running arbitrary engine arrangements, including the Pivotal engine, and can predict the performance of these engines. However, the code is un-validated against real engine data. Where possible sub-models have been tested and proven against special test cases that have an analytic solution. The next logical extension beyond the current project is to thoroughly validate and compare the engine simulation against real engine test data. Other areas in which the code could be improved include; extending the simulation code to incorporate more advanced models and improving the ease with which engine simulations can be set-up, run and analysed.

Keränen, N. (Niina). "Autistisen nuoren puheen kuntoutus pivotal response training -tekniikalla:tapaustutkimus." Master's thesis, University of Oulu, 2013. http://urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi:oulu-201312051981.

Full text
Abstract:
Tämän pro gradu -tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää, onko lyhyellä PRT-menetelmään perustuvalla interventiolla vaikutusta autistisen henkilön jäljittelytaitojen kehitykseen sekä kommunikatiivisten aloitteiden ja puheen määrään. Lapsuusiän autismi on neurobiologinen keskushermoston kehityshäiriö (Minshew, 1996), jonka syytä ei tarkasti tunneta. Lapsuusiän autismi ilmenee sosiaalisen vuorovaikutuksen vaikeutena, viestinnän ja kommunikaation häiriönä ja kapea-alaisena juuttuvana käyttäytymisenä (ks. esim. Loncola & Graig-Unkefer, 2005; Mundy & Stella, 2000). Oireiden ja erilaisten taitojen esiintyminen on henkilötasolla kuitenkin hyvin vaihtelevaa (Lord ym., 2000; Timonen, 1991; Williams, 1996, s. 8). Vaikka autismin oireet saattavat muuttua radikaalistikin lapsen kasvaessa, ne säilyvät silti läpi elämän erilaisina sosiaalisen vuorovaikutuksen ja kommunikoinnin vaikeuksina sekä poikkeavina kiinnostuksen kohteina (WHO, 1999). Autististen henkilöiden kommunikointiin liittyviä keskeisimpiä piirteitä ovat aloitteettomuus (Stone & Caro-Martinez, 1990), kykenemättömyys jaettuun tarkkaavaisuuteen (American Psychiatric Association, 2000; Mundy & Crowson, 1997) ja imitoinnin kommunikatiivisesti käytön puuttuminen(Southgate, Gergely, & Csibra, 2008; Hamilton, 2008). Pivotal Response Training (PRT) tarkoittaa ydinvalmiuksien harjaannuttamisohjelmaa.

Dupree, Kami M. "Secondary Mathematics Teachers’ Responses to Pivotal Teaching Moments." DigitalCommons@USU, 2019. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/7535.

Full text
Abstract:
This study used a multiple case study design to explore the occurrence of pivotal teaching moments, teachers’ responses to these moments, and teachers’ own perceptions of the impact of these moments on their own knowledge development. The participants were six practicing secondary mathematics teachers. The researcher collected data from teacher created lesson plan outlines, observations of the same lesson delivered to two different classes, participant interviews, and teacher reflection journals. The researcher reviewed the lesson plan outlines prior to observations to understand teachers’ anticipations. During observations, the researcher recorded observed pivotal teaching moments, corresponding teacher responses to these moments, and instructional changes between the two observed lessons. Interviews allowed the researcher to identify in-the-moment teacher thinking and teachers’ motivations for their responses. Teacher reflection journals provided insights related to teachers’ classroom actions and learning. The results confirmed and built upon existing classifications of pivotal teaching moments and teachers’ responses, while also identifying seven themes related to teacher motivations for their responses. Teachers’ perceptions of changes in their own knowledge base occurred for their content knowledge as well as their pedagogical content knowledge. Future research should explore how pivotal teaching moments are created, how teacher-student interactions shape teacher knowledge development, and examine the role of teachers’ reflections about their practice in their knowledge development

Abstract:
Places where children, grown-ups and elderly get to know each other are few. The children’s’ role models and kin are restricted by that of their parents pursue of career and their aim to live their lives as a nuclear family. The young ones are left to depriving environments constituted of makeshift preschools. Often built out of building barracks, enclosed by fences or in other cases crammed in to the dark of the ground floor of the more congested parts of Stockholm. Not somewhere you choose to spend your time in. If you get to choose. This project combines the programme of a preschool with that of dance studios, a restaurant and a public square. The focus is on how to achieve an environment where the generations can meet, without risking the children’s security. On how to create spaces that subjects the adults to that of the conditions of the children. Where the extra programmes fit because they could encourage this, or at least bridge the gap between some of those generations by their acts of conduct. The aim has been:  to use architecture in order to heighten the status of the preschool. To engage more role models for the children. To strive towards curiosity, forwardness and security instead of the direction the society is heading towards today, where fear, isolation and suspicion inhibit our children’s ability to grow.

Singh, Namrata. "The Effects of Parent Training in Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT) and Continued Support through Telemedicine on Gains in Communication in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/315907.

Abstract:
A Thesis submitted to The University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Medicine.<br>Introduction: With the increase in children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) each year comes the need for individualized interventions necessary for children with autism. Many of the treatments currently available are time consuming, costly, and rely heavily on behavioral interventionists despite the lack of qualified interventionists to provide these services. Therefore, there is a growing recognition of the need for efficient, cost-effective treatment models that involves families in the intervention. This study examined the effects of continuous parent training and feedback for 3 months in Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT) through telemedicine on responsivity to language opportunities in children with ASD versus a control group of parents receiving one week of PRT training alone. We hypothesized that with telemedicine support, the child’s verbal communication would increase. Methods: 30 child-parent dyads from Tucson, AZ were enrolled in this randomized control trial. Subjects were 24-60 months of age and met DSM-IV criteria for autism at the time of enrollment. All subjects received one week of intensive parent training at the Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center (SARRC) in PRT. The support group received telemedicine feedback three times weekly for three months. Data was analyzed using two sample t-tests and Wilcoxon rank sum tests. Results: The control group had a mean responsivity in function verbal utterances of 64.3% and the telemedicine group had a 62.7% verbal responsivity rate prior to initiation of telemedicine support. At three month follow-up, the control group had a mean responsivity rate of 58.6% and the telemedicine group had a mean responsivity of 64.3%. A two sample t-test showed a no significant difference between the two groups with a p-value of 0.51. Conclusions: This study did not find any significant difference between the telemedicine and control groups. However, there is a trend towards increased verbal communication in the telemedicine group. We therefore recommend further studies to determine the utility of telemedicine and parent training in PRT in the treatment of children with ASD.

Full text
Abstract:
In neurons, brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) facilitates cell survival, differentiation and long term potentiation (LTP) by binding predominantly to its receptor tyrosine kinase B (TrkB). In contrast, precursor BDNF (proBDNF) facilitates synaptic withdrawal, long term depression (LTD) and cell death via pan neurotrophin receptor (p75NTR) and sortilin. Additionally, a polymorphism in the pro region of proBDNF referred to as Val66Met, has been of interest in both healthy and diseased brain. The healthy Met66 carriers have been associated with reduced hippocampal volumes, episodic memory and protective for late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD). AD is a progressive neurodegenerative disease characterised by synaptic withdrawal at early stages and with profound neuronal death at later stages. It was therefore hypothesised that proBDNF:mature BDNF ratio would be increased in AD brain, which may contribute to the detrimental effects seen in AD. It was also expected that the Val66Met polymorphic variants would bind differentially to their receptors and influence AD pathogenesis. Highly pure recombinant human (rh) proBDNF variants were successfully produced in this study. The rhproBDNF bound with three-fold less affinity to TrkB and p75NTR as shown by surface plasmon resonance and in rat phaeochromocytoma cells expressing TrkB (PC 12-TrkB) mediated three-fold less prosurvival signalling than rhBDNF. In cotiical neurons, rhproBDNF mediated dose dependent reduction in cotiical cell viability. Interestingly, Val66 variant facilitated hippocampal L TD whereas the Met66 variant blocked LTD. Apart from LTD, all binding and signalling profiles via TrkB, p75NTR and sortilin were independent of Val66Met polymorphism. This was indicative of a possible involvement of an additional coreceptor for p75NTR other than sortilin in LTD. Importantly in AD, even though BDNF and proBDNF levels were significantly reduced, the proBDNF:BDNF ratio was increased; independent of Val66Met polymorphism. Collectively, the increased proBDNF:BDNF ratio in AD patients would favour proBDNF-dependent neurotoxic signalling. However, compared to non-demented Val66 elderly, Met66 carriers had less proBDNF, suggesting a possible protective role for this polymorphism. Future studies using larger samples would further validate this finding

Abstract:
Inclusive preschool settings often provide benefits for children with special needs. Children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are at risk for isolation from peers and have benefited from a range of social communication interventions. Joint attention is a pivotal skill under researched in natural settings. Research is needed on joint attention within natural settings and with naturally occurring partners such as parents or peers. The proposed study uses an interventionist and peer delivered joint attention intervention in a multiple baseline design across child-peer dyads in inclusive preschool classrooms. Data are collected on increase in response to joint attention skills as well as peer bids to the target child.

Abstract:
There have been calls the world over for academic institutions to adopt corporate forms of management. Unisa Council declared its commitment to corporate governance in the Annual report 2009. This study aims to determine whether Unisa Council activities and decisions comply with corporate governance as per the King III Code and identify any area(s) of improvement. Case study research was undertaken to investigate compliance with the principles of good governance as recommended in the Code. A checklist was used to collect data from university documents and this data was analysed by pattern matching. Unisa performance was then compared with that of University of KwaZulu-Natal. Unisa Council performed 91percent of recommended practices and thereby complied with 87 percent of principles of good governance as per the King III Code on Corporate Governance. Unisa did not comply with three principles and neither complied nor not-complied with five principles as the level of performance of corresponding recommended practices was below the threshold of 75 percent. UKZN achieved 91 percent performance of the recommended practices and thereby obtained 87 percent compliance. The study also showed that practicing corporate forms of management to improve academic governance does not necessarily relegate academic interest to lower levels. This means that these institutions delivered on their mandate from the Higher Education Act, 1997 (as amended). Unisa and UKZN are primarily public institutions of higher education and not profit driven, despite them embracing corporate forms of management.

This thesis studies the classical finite pivot methods for solving linear programs and their efficiency in attaining primal feasibility. We review Dantzig's largest-coefficient simplex method, Bland's smallest-index rule, and the least-index criss-cross method. We present the b'-rule: a simple algorithm---based on Bland's smallest index rule---for solving systems of linear inequalities (feasibility of linear programs). We prove that the b'-rule is finite, from which we then prove Farka's Lemma, the Duality Theorem for Linear Programming, and the Fundamental Theorem of Linear Inequalities. We present experimental results that compare the speed of the b' -rule to the classical methods.

Abstract:
Even while the number of cancer patients continues to grow, the number of nurse navigators (NNs) has plateaued. Given this situation, NNs and their managers must review, identify and delimit their contribution to the care of cancer patients. The purpose of this study is to provide a detailed description of the care activities actually performed by local and supra-regional NNs. The present research project has been guided by the mixed framework consisting of the main nursing functions, as set out by Dallaire et al. (2008), and the definition of the NN’s role, as set out by Fillion et al. (2012). Working from a non-probability judgment sample consisting of five participants, the student researcher employed a data collection method based on the structured non-participatory observation of the practice of these nurses coupled with individual semi-structured interviews. The results show that NNs perform more care activities in relation to the clinical dimension (55%) than to the organizational dimension (45%). NNs primarily perform co-ordinating and caring functions. Co-ordinating ranks first, at 41% of the observed care activities, while collaboration-related activities (4%) are seldom observed. That being said, and without generalizing the results, it would appear that all care activities are positively affected by the sound performance of an interdisciplinary team working according to a well-structured care trajectory.

We introduce an electoral pollster in a two-candidate costly voting model to study the incentives that pollsters have regarding the release of poll results. In our model, the pollster has private knowledge about the distribution of citizens\' preferences, but it may report false information to the public. If this happens, we say the pollster is misreporting the poll. An often heard criticism about pollsters is that they might manipulate in order to benefit some candidate. We show that they have incentives to misreport even in the absence of ideological motives.

Abstract:
Il s'agit de contributions originales destinées à donner à la philosophie toute sa dimension sapientielle au service de l'accompagnement palliatif.<br>Our research explores key moments of metamorphosis of the political relationship to mortality under consideration of such topics as the forbidden, the dignity, the autonomy and the alterity. We derive suitable anchors in order to feed the current thinking in palliative medicine. We deliver a philosophical investigation, to us Westerners who enjoy the strongest influences of the Greco-Roman, the Christian and the modern way of thinking. These bases, building our political world, have led to the emergence of palliative medicine. Therefore we attempt to characterize and understand new issues in their political and ethical aspects, considered in the light of contemporary forms of support for the dying. Our effort is in trying to discern the aspirations and the dead ends. The study of the metamorphosis of benchmarks showed a pronounced dissociation over time. Consequently, as to our interpretation of the business foundation of these political issues unveiled a universal recognition of the prohibition of homicide, but with a loss of moral bond in favor of an amoral referred; unanimous downstream of respect for human dignity, but expressing confusion and ostensible division between intrinsic and extrinsic designs; a bald assertion of autonomy, but with a marked distancing in terms of how to consider the part of the other; a variation of human relations as recognized by all, but exacerbated in an artificial tension between individualism and altruism. Furthemore, noting the distance and dislocation between the notions of public and private, between the claim of brotherhood and the search for meaningful friendship, we considered the palliative community as a place of resistance to this threatening breakdown in the political community. At the end of the analysis, we founded the concepts of "allonomia" and "ethical suspension." These original contributions to philosophy are aimed at giving its full wisdom dimension in serving palliative care.

Harrison, James. "Biochemical characterisation of pivotal enzymes involved in Mycobacterium tuberculosis cell wall biosynthesis." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2016. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/6964/.

Full text
Abstract:
Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the etiological agent of tuberculosis, has a unique cell envelope which accounts for its unusual low permeability and contributes to resistance against common antibiotics. The mycobacterial cell wall consists of a cross-linked network of peptidoglycan (PG) in which some of the muramic acid residues are adorned with a complex polysaccharide, arabinogalactan (AG), via a unique α-L-rhamnopyranose–(1→3)-α-D-GlcNAc-(1→P) linker unit. Whilst the cytoplasmic steps of mycobacterial cell wall biosynthesis have been largely delineated, the molecular processes that govern the flux of PG intermediates and the mechanism by which PG and AG pathways converge has remained elusive. We identified key conserved serine/threonine residues of MurC, as potential candidates for phospho-regulation by the cognate protein kinase, PknA. Pseudo-phosphorylated MurC mutants exhibited differential enzyme activity, suggesting that M. tuberculosis is capable of tight control of PG biosynthesis through phosphorylation of MurC. In addition, we have identified Lcp1, a mycobacterial orthologue of the LytR-CpsA-Psr (LCP) family of proteins found in Gram-positive bacteria, responsible for ligating cell wall teichoic acids to PG. We demonstrate that lcp1 is an essential gene required for cell viability and show that recombinant Lcp1 is a phosphotransferase capable of ligating AG to PG in a cell free radiolabelled assay.

Abstract:
An investigation in to a novel pivot point free external cavity tunable laser (PPI ECTL). Existing external cavity tunable lasers are constructed using tunable optics, such as Bragg gratings to manipulate the cavity length. These elements although functional provide instability with prolonged use as they are defined by a centre of rotation or pivot point. The aim of this research was to provide a lab demonstrator of a new concept tunable laser based on conventional designs. The novel approach to the system design was in the removal of a defined pivot point, whilst still maintaining a moving optical component. The demonstration system will investigate the improvements upon traditional methods of tuning whilst providing greater tuning range and stability. The main defect of conventional systems was the reliance on the defined pivot point of the movable optics. By changing the position of the pivot point, the cavity length will change and the laser mode will change or hop to a side mode. This was known as a mode hop. The objective of the research was to design and implement a durable ECTL with a large tuning range (>200GHz), mode hop free tuning, fibre coupled, circular output beam and a wavelength in the visible. Design and production of a prototype PPI ECT laser that demonstrate the process of mode hop free tuning without the need of a defined pivot point. The impact of the research may lead in to the integration in to lower cost and more reliable commercial applications.

Abstract:

Hensley, John Eric. "Rotordynamic coefficients for a load-between-pad, flexible-pivot tilting pad bearing at high loads." Texas A&M University, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/4404.

Full text
Abstract:
The dynamic and static performance of a flexure-pivot tilting pad bearing is presented at a load between pad configuration for various load and speed combinations. A similar work performed on the same bearing at lower loads ranging from 0-1 MPa (0-150 psi) by Al-Ghasem was tested, whereas the current work investigates effects in the load range between 1-2.2 MPa (150-320 psi). The bearing design parameters include: 4 pads with pad arc angle 72º and 50% pivot offset, pad axial length 0.0762 m (3 in), pad radial clearance 0.254 mm (0.010 in), bearing radial clearance 190.5 µm (0.0075 in), preload 0.25, and shaft nominal diameter of 0.11684 m (4.600 in). An important distinction between the two sets of tests is the difference in experimental bearing radial clearance, which for this case measured 208 µm (0.00082 in), and for Al-Ghasem’s was 165.1 µm (0.0065 in). The rotordynamic coefficients are determined experimentally using a test rig equipped with motion and load sensors. The rig is modeled using Newton’s laws, which is converted from the time to frequency domain using Fourier Transform to give complex dynamic stiffnesses. From the resulting complex dynamic stiffnesses the associated real and imaginary components are plotted as a function of excitation frequency and curve fitted via linear regression to give the rotordynamic coefficients. The primary objectives were to determine whether the real component of the complex dynamic stiffnesses could be better modeled with or without the mass coefficient and to contrast the rotordynamic coefficients with an analytical model. Only in the load range of 1 to 2.2 MPa were the unloaded direct mass coefficients near or at 0, which would allow for a [K][C] model to be used. The remaining real components are better represented with the mass term. The analytical model generally overpredicted the stiffness, damping and mass coefficients, especially for the direct components; the trends were generally consistent.

Abstract:
no<br>Inflammatory changes, characterized by an increase in pro-inflammatory cytokine production and up-regulation of the corresponding signaling pathways, have been described in the brains of aged rats and rats treated with the potent immune modulatory molecule lipopolysaccharide (LPS). These changes have been coupled with a deficit in long-term potentiation (LTP) in hippocampus. The evidence suggests that anti-inflammatory agents, which attenuate the LPS-induced and age-associated increase in hippocampal interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) concentration, lead to restoration of LTP. Here we report that atorvastatin, a member of the family of agents that act as inhibitors of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase, exerts powerful anti-inflammatory effects in brain and that these effects are mediated by IL-4 and independent of its cholesterol-lowering actions. Treatment of rats with atorvastatin increased IL-4 concentration in hippocampal tissue prepared from LPS-treated and aged rats and abrogated the age-related and LPS-induced increases in pro-inflammatory cytokines, interferon-¿ (IFN¿) and IL-1ß, and the accompanying deficit in LTP. The effect of atorvastatin on the LPS-induced increases in IFN¿ and IL-1ß was absent in tissue prepared from IL-4¿/¿ mice. The increase in IL-1ß in LPS-treated and aged rats is associated with increased microglial activation, assessed by analysis of major histocompatibility complex II expression, and the evidence suggests that IFN¿ may trigger this activation. We propose that the primary effect of atorvastatin is to increase IL-4, which antagonizes the effects of IFN¿, the associated increase in microglial activation, and the subsequent cascade of events.

Sabnavis, Giridhar. "Test Results for Shaft Tracking Behavior of Pads in a Spherical Pivot Type Tilting Pad Journal Bearing." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/32574.

Full text
Abstract:
Most tilting pad journal bearing dynamic characteristics estimation methodologies assume perfect shaft tracking by the pads. In other words, they neglect pivot friction. In case of pads having point or line contact that operate under most normal load conditions, the pad tilting is due to a rocking motion which is not greatly influenced by friction. Hence this simplifying assumption might be acceptable. Heavier loading conditions, such as those typically encountered in gearboxes, demand the use of spherical pivots to avoid pivot failure. The spherical pivot is very attractive for this reason, but the tilting motion is rather a sliding action that must occur in the precision ball socket. A valid concern exists for verifying the soundness of assumed shaft tracking by the pads of such bearings. A â fixed test bearing, floating shaftâ type of test rig previously built for determining the dynamic characteristics of bearings was accordingly modified to facilitate the testing of shaft tracking for a spherical pivot bearing. This thesis describes the modifications carried out on the rig. The special instrumentation and data acquisition systems implemented to observe the minute pad motion are also discussed. Some preliminary results of the tests are presented for various loading conditions. They show excellent shaft tracking by the pads. More detailed testing and analysis of data is required to fully understand the pad motion and tracking ability of the spherical pivot design.<br>Master of Science
