Abstract:
This paper examines the role of place attachment in religious life by analyzing various significant place events in the Bible, using analysis of biblical discourse. The paper looks at various biblical places, and explores the implications of approaching these sacred settings in terms of place attachment theory. In the Old Testament we focus on Mount Sinai, Canaan, and Jerusalem, and in the New Testament on Galilee, Jerusalem, and on view that Christianity, to some extent, transcends place attachment. The nature of the attachments to these places is diverse and varied. The claim is that place attachment theory can make a valuable theoretical contribution to an analysis of the role of place in the Bible, as an addition to the growing literature on the psychological interpretation of the Bible.

Abstract:
This study focuses on attachment theory as the foundation theory in examining the antecedent and outcome of place attachment among local tourists of heritage sites. Data was collected from local tourists who visited heritage sites in Melaka and George Town by using judgemental sampling through questionnaire. A total of 396 respondents completed the questionnaire. Structural equation model was used to analyze data and test the hypothesis. This study reveals new findings whereby cultural motivation positively influences each of the four dimensions of place attachment. However, only place dependence and affective attachments were found positively influencing intention to recommend. Destination managers are encouraged to enhance tourists’ attachment (place dependence and affective attachment) by providing knowledge and information, especially to culturally motivated tourists. Recommendations for future studies are also discussed to overcome the limitations of this study.

Abstract:
With the development of the “Hallyu” (Korean Wave) and people’s deep understanding of South Korea, the phenomenon of “Hallyu” idols driving tourism has become very common. Tourists, especially fans are no longer satisfied with the traditional tourist attractions with special symbolic meanings when visiting South Korea, but instead focus on common places associated with idols. For example, restaurants, cafes, bookstores, parks and convenience stores that have appeared in an idol’s social network accounts. With the application of the theory of attachment and sense of place in the tourism field, this study will start from the celebrity attachment, to exploring the specific processes and mechanisms by which idols affect the behavioral intentions of the fans. The associations between visitors and idol-related places based on celebrity attachments has also become possible, and the fans/tourists’ opinions and attitudes toward idol-related places will also change due to this emotional attachment. Relevant data were collected in the form of online questionnaires, and 440 valid responses were finalized for data analysis. Through data analysis, all the hypotheses proposed in this paper are supported, and there are significant relationships and positive influences among the variables. Data analysis results show that idol attachment can positively influence the four cognitive dimensions of sense of place (place identity, place dependence, social bonding and atmosphere). The various dimensions of sense of place can promote the generation of place attachment.

Abstract:
Place attachment is a common expression used by individuals to identify with natural settings. Although resource meanings are hard for some people to describe, intangible values can play an important role in site visitation. The purpose of this study was to measure the effect of interpretation on place attachment; a relationship that has been speculated, but not tested. A questionnaire was administered to nearly 200 visitors who attended a wild cave tour at a state park in mid-Missouri. Results indicated that the naturalist-led program was successful, but the place attachment scores were similar before and after the tour. However, visitors who attended cave tours frequently scored higher on place attachment than first-timers. Results of this study are discussed in relation to cognitive map theory.

Abstract:
AbstractDespite the growing attention brand credibility attracts in recent marketing literature, little is known about the credibility of place brands and their relationship with consumers’ loyalty. The present study builds on brand signalling and attachment theory to investigate whether credible place brands affect consumers’ attachment formation, their subsequent word of mouth (WOM) and intention to return. Survey data from an Alpine winter sport destination reveal that place brand credibility is a key antecedent of consumers’ attachment. Moreover, consistent with brand signalling theory, credible place brands exert a particularly strong direct effect on consumers’ WOM. A positive effect on their intention to return, however, will result only if they feel attached with the place brand beforehand. Implications for marketing scholars and brand managers are offered.

Abstract:
This paper examines the concept of land attachment—a positive emotional relationship between a resettled farmer and his or her rural land—in the context of China’s rapid urbanization and the resultant huge number of resettled and landless farmers. It explores the nature of resettled farmers’ emotional relationships to rural land to reveal the kinds of land that are meaningful to famers’ lives, and the differences among different groups. The study’s conceptual framework was based on place attachment theory. Grounded theory was applied to analyze qualitative data obtained from in-depth interviews. The results show that land attachment can be divided into seven categories: landscape, lifestyle, land income, land rights, land rootedness, land culture, and villagers’ relationships. We also observed three categories of emotional relationships between resettled farmers and rural land: “reluctant to give up rural land and with land attachment”, “willing to give up rural land but with land attachment”, and “willing to give up rural land and without land attachment”. This study’s exploration of the concept of land attachment revealed that rural land is not merely an objective asset but that it also has a multidimensional existence, and may be the focus of subjective loss. The study also observed that it would be helpful to deepen understandings of the subjective loss experienced by resettled farmers as a result of land-requisition policies. Drawing from its findings, the paper concludes with suggestions supportive of the sustainable development of future policies and communities.

Abstract:
By listening to peoples' constructed stories of special places, the average person begins to understand why and how attachments to places form. This study concerns the attachments residents of Isle au Haut, Maine possess on the remote island, which borders part of Acadia National Park. The purpose of this study is to uncover social components of both place attachment and place identity among island residents as well as explain the process by which those residents form attachments. Twelve interviews were conducted both on Isle au Haut as well as nearby Mount Desert Island. Qualitative data were collected from a purposive sample of island residents and National Park Service employees who are responsible for managing the park on the island. In-depth interviews were the sole means of data collection and provided detailed stories of life on the island and attachments that have formed. This study uses grounded theory techniques in data analysis to ultimately form a theory grounded in the collected data. The findings from this study indicate that social interaction is key to residents forming an attachment to Isle au Haut. Further, three major social constructs emerged from the data analysis. Those constructs are sense of community, shared purpose, and shared history, all of which were found to contribute to place identity and place attachment among the residents. The results also suggest place identity as more salient than place dependence in residents' narratives concerning their attachment to the island.

Dante, Magaly C. "Exploring the Lived Experiences of Seniors Aging in Place." ScholarWorks, 2015. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/1339.

Abstract:
Baby boomers are living longer, and as they age, they will need more supportive services that may include housing, mobility, nutrition, personal care, or health care. Despite the studies that have been conducted on baby boomers aging in place (choosing to stay in their home versus move to an institution), the focus has been on the old and frail and very little has been done to address the lifestyle of active (physically functioning) baby boomers. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand the lived, shared experiences of active baby boomers regarding their beliefs and attitudes about aging in place and the implications of this decision. The theoretical foundation of the study was based on Atchley's continuity theory. Data were gathered through in-person, semi-structured interviews with 11 participants, age 65 and older, living in a coastal area of a southern state. Data from the interviews were inductively coded and then organized around key themes. The themes from the content analysis indicated that the participants were embracing the concept of aging in place and adjusting to their limitations (i.e. physical, financial, emotional, and/or environmental) when present. Identified barriers to aging in place were access to services (specifically medical and in-home care), financial constraints, and the inability to drive or inaccessibility of transportation. This study contributes to positive social change by providing policymakers and administrators with information to strengthen the argument that the current social service delivery system is overburdened and may not meet the demands of this population in order for them to maintain their independence and autonomy. Additionally, this study raises awareness among policymakers that driving longer will in itself possess its own challenges such as visibility concerns and roadway design not conducive to aging adults.

Abstract:
Minimal research has examined the interrelationship between motivation, place attachment, and the need to belong in a residential camping environment. The purpose of this study was to better understand the role of place attachment and the need to belong in facilitating 4-H Camp Graham campers and counselors interest in returning to residential 4-H summer camp year after year. All participants included in this study were at least 18 years of age, graduated from high school, former 4-H members, and attended 4-H camp for at least two consecutive years. Three camping clusters participated in focus group interviews for a total of 21 participants. A fourth camping cluster and participants unable to attend their designated focus group, were invited complete an online survey. Overall, campers and counselors were primarily motivated to return to camp each year due to the relationships, memories, and sense of belonging formed at camp. While nature and location played a role in the camp experience by providing a secluded environment free from outside influence, these attachments were secondary. Attachment to camp grew over time and participants valued the camp experience highly and tended to choose camp friendships and the camp experience over other opportunities. Longevity at camp influenced the strength of attachment. This research suggests that intentionality in these areas of staff training and program planning are critical to camper and counselor connection to camp. Additionally, this research provides tangible evidence that points to the value of sharing the residential camping experience with potential funders and parents.

Abstract:
Although youth tourism is an increasingly relevant subject little research have been done regarding the segment’s own perception of their impacts. A consumer perspective was assumed to examine in what ways youth tourism impact places. This study adopts a deductive approach reviewing existing literature regarding youth tourism, impact and place. A case study concerning how youth travellers perceive and evaluate their own impacts was conducted using mixed-methods. Data sources include a survey and in-depth interviews concerning sociocultural, economic, and environmental items. The study concludes that what impacts youth tourism has on places are subject to the place’s current state and ability to host youth travellers. The number of youth travellers and their behaviour determines the local and global sociocultural, economic and environmental impacts that youth tourism has on places. This paper is considered a pre-study that contributes to the development of theory regarding youth tourism.

Montanye, Erica. "Urban dwellers experiences regarding loss of natural environments due to rapid urbanization." ScholarWorks, 2017. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/4313.

Abstract:
Little is known about how residents of rapidly growing cities are impacted by the loss of natural environments. Large cities are expanding at an exponential rate, reducing the presence of, and access to, natural environments for urban dwellers. Many benefits to human health regarding the presence of natural environments near where people live and work are known, but impacts of the loss of natural environments for urban dwellers are unknown. The purpose of this qualitative investigation was to understand residents' experiences regarding the loss of natural environments and related impacts. Attention restoration theory and place attachment were the theoretical lenses used to examine this problem. Data were collected via in-depth interviews from a purposive sample of 20 San Antonio residents. Using interpretative phenomenological analysis procedures, 7 themes emerged: (a) environment (b) health (c) safety (d) finance (e) community and culture (e) factors related to deprivation of nature, and (f) recommendations for improvements. Residents expressed concerns for their health, mental health, the environment, wildlife, byproducts of urbanization, social well-being, personal safety, and finances. Other possible key factors related to the process of deprivation of nature included experiencing a loss of freedom, associated with emotional impacts similar to sadness. Residents of San Antonio, city planners, and policy makers could benefit from understanding these impacts on residents. Data from this study may contribute to possible implications for social change and new knowledge and insights in the areas of health, mental health, social responsibility, urban planning, land conservation, and environmental psychology.

"The Transformation of the Modern American Kitchen from 1901 through 1964: From Hell on Earth to the Warmest Room in the House." Master's thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.20868.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: Many of the scholars that have chronicled the creation of the modern American kitchen have written about how the technological, societal, and cultural revolutions of the twentieth century played a role in dramatically changing its structure and design. More recently, some scholarly research has focused on the evolution of the kitchen and its meaning over time. In several of these research publications scholars profess that the modern American kitchen, more than any other room, has come to symbolize the center or heart of the home, and the warmest room in the house. However, they are quick to acknowledge that, at the beginning of the twentieth century, the kitchen was not so fondly regarded. Little research exists regarding why individuals increasingly became attached to the kitchen or how that attachment influenced the layout, size, objects, and activities conducted in the kitchen. This thesis fills this void by exploring the implications of place attachment on the evolution of the American kitchen from 1901 through 1964. By approaching this research from a combination of design history and environmental psychology, this thesis provides a new perspective to our understanding of the evolution of kitchen design. Using this two-pronged approach, this study contributes to our understanding of the evolution of the kitchen. This study traces the evolution of the modern American kitchen using two qualitative methodologies: material culture and phenomenology. Drawing from a variety of floor plans, advertisements, and articles contained in the House Beautiful magazine 1901 through 1964, as well as writings from popular domestic advisors of the period, this thesis charts the transformation of the modern American kitchen from a "hell on earth" into the "heart and soul of the home." By combining place attachment theory and kitchen design research this thesis provides interior designers new insight into designing kitchens that foster endearing emotional attachment for our clients.

Correia, Maria Beatriz de Noronha. "Impacto do desenvolvimento turístico nos residentes : caso do Porto." Master's thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.14/33962.

Full text
Abstract:
A high growth in the tourism sector is associated with a diverse and complex set of economic, sociocultural and environmental impacts, capable of affecting residents’ quality of life of a tourist destination. In this context, the development policies of the territories must meet and privilege the sustainability of tourism. Residents influence the perception of the profile and quality of the tourist offer and, inevitably, are a variable to consider in the development process of tourist destinations. Thus, understanding their perspectives and attitudes towards tourism development is fundamental to the sustainability of the industry in this sector. The present study aims to develop an analysis of variables that influence residents’ support for tourism development, in the Porto district. By adopting a non-forced approach in measuring the perceived economic, sociocultural and environmental impacts, it is intended to assess its influence on residents' support for tourism development. In addition, both place image and place attachment are introduced as preceding variables of residents' support for tourism development. Thus, the aim will be to identify the relationship between both place image and place attachment with the residents’ support for tourism development and, also, with the perceived impacts. After a literature review on topics such as tourism and sustainable development, residents’ perceptions and attitudes, tourism impacts, place image and place attachment, an empirical study was conducted. The results achieved through the implementation of a questionnaire to the residents of Porto district, allowed to reinforce the idea that there is a relationship between the perceived impacts of tourism and the support of residents to its development. The results also reveal the significance of place image in shaping residents' perception of xi tourism impacts as well as their level of support. Finally, the relationship between place attachment and the perceived economic and sociocultural impacts of tourism were also validated.

Abstract:
The chapter places theological anthropologies that focus on the connectedness of the self in dialogue with key findings and claims advanced by attachment theorists. One of the most amply researched and pragmatically employed frameworks in contemporary neuropsychology, attachment theory contends that human subjectivity is the product of human attachments. Attachment figures provide an environment of perceived safety within which and out of which the self can pursue other activities in freedom; should attachment needs remain unmet, human actions would be inhibited. Self-actualization depends upon secure attachments that home the self. In fact, the term “home” is a key technical concept for attachment theory: secure attachments constitute a secure home for the self.

Abstract:
A shared fluency theory of social cohesiveness is outlined that accounts for disparate phenomena under a unified framework. This starts from the well-known metacognitive feeling of processing fluency (henceforth fluency), which is the subjective ease with which a mental operation is performed. Fluency is extended to the social domain, and the notion of shared fluency is introduced, consisting of two aspects: interpersonal fluency, or the ease with which two people coordinate their behavior, and shared object fluency, meaning that people exposed to the same objects can process these objects more easily. Fluency theory provides new insights in five domains: religious rituals, Confucian virtue ethics, military drill, culturally shared tastes, and place attachment. After a discussion of strengths and limitations of the shared fluency theory, it is concluded that low-level mechanisms, like fluency, may help explain complex social phenomena and open new avenues for feeling-based interventions relevant at a societal level.

Scientific scrutiny of love cannot reduce it to mere physical processes. Other perspectives are needed to explain why these mechanisms exist in the first place and what role they play in our lives: evolutionary theory, anthropology, psychology, and sociology. ‘Science’ considers several observations and typologies, from sociologist John Alan Lee’s six basic styles or ‘colours of love’ and psychologist Robert Sternberg’s ‘triangular model’ of love to psychologist Helen Fisher’s three syndromes of love—lust, limerence, and attachment. Brain imaging technology and scientists studying neurotransmitters that are implicated in feelings of love and the molecules that are transmitted from one person to the other through taste and smell are expanding our understanding of love.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses how attachment theory is used, or not, in professional practice and decision making. Attachment theory is now a standard subject on social work qualifying programmes and many employers provide training for their social workers in attachment theory, ensuring that most practitioners are familiar with the theory. As the discourse of attachment theory has influenced medical opinion and doctors have the power and privilege to diagnose children, a range of ‘attachment disorders’ has been created and these disorders are used to categorise children. Afforded with greater power and status, such diagnoses by medical practitioners feed into the attachment theory knowledge base of social workers, influencing and framing how social workers think about the children and families they work with. The chapter then considers Matthew Gibson's recent study, which took place in the child and family social work service in an English local authority.

Abstract:
This coda summarises the main arguments of this book. It calls for the ethical use of attachment theory. All theories are tools, and tools need to be used in the right way, addressing the thing they were designed to explain or improve. There are parts of attachment theory that were designed to understand love and relationships, and parts that were designed to change policy and practice to create a more humane system of public services. These aspects provide a good fit for child welfare practice and some of the ideas of attachment theory were developed within, and inspired by, child welfare practice. If attachment theory is to be used ethically in policy and practice, practitioners need to properly understand the theory, its origins and original intentions. The book has also outlined the need to place attachment theory into a wider context for practice. Professional ethics necessarily involve respecting familial relational networks, seeking to develop, strengthen, and deepen those relationships that provide connection and belonging. Without these central values, attachment theory can result in the opposite.

Abstract:
This chapter traces the origins of attachment theory and reviews its component parts, including the seminal empirical research on animals and humans. Attachment theory, popularised during the 1940s and 1950s, is a synthesis of object relations theory and ethological developmental psychology. It suggests a symbiotic dance of nature and nurture, achieved through the ministering of the mother. It shares with object relations theory an emphasis on the infant's relationship with the ‘primary object’, but these ideas are combined with those from cognitive psychology, cybernetics (control systems theory), ethology, and evolutionary biology. The theory is thus an elegant, but pragmatic mishmash, arising from attempts to make sense of empirical, clinical observations of real children experiencing distressing separations, together with aspirations to make the world a better place for everybody by understanding the medium of love. Attachment theory as used in child welfare is generally attributed to the work of John Bowlby, James Robertson, and Mary Ainsworth. The chapter then considers the controversies that attachment theory has faced, particularly in the latter half of the 20th century.

Abstract:
In this chapter, the author adds a theory of place to the analysis of female ritualistic experience and materiality of sacredness. Place is basic in the ritual, as the experience is always shaped and designed within a particular scheme and its architecture. Jonathan Smith stressed the importance of place for ritualistic performance, especially of constructed ritual environments, to a proper understanding of the ways “empty” actions become rituals. Rituals, poetry, aesthetics, embodiment, identity, and class formation are all expressed in a certain architecture, which is why the forms and meanings of rituals can be both expected and unexpected. Rituals can create shared experience in one physical context and impose exclusion and separation in another. In the various female shrines discussed here, the ritual is both created by and affected by the politics of the place. In the context of Israel/Palestine, this is mostly the politics of struggle, conflict, and hostility between different ethnic groups. In this realm, the ritual is a form of communicating territorial claims, demands justified via the visitors’ own bodies, using symbols of fertility of land/soil, and rituals of nascence and recreation. These actions emphasize the visitors’ belongings and claims to native lands. Rituals maintain place attachment. It is through ritual performance that the environments attain meanings and configurations. Sacredness and embodiment are spatialized, and sacred places become a path to claim land. In Israel/Palestine, this dynamic of sacred places is becoming central.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the notion of the “hard-to-place child” and the post-war emergence of the idea that foster children were inherently damaged. This idea derived from the rise of “attachment theory” and the conventional wisdom that New Deal family security programs had effectively eliminated poverty as a reason for child placement, thereby meaning that those children still in need of foster care came from pathological families. The chapter looks at various qualities that made a child “hard-to-place,” including, age, disability, behavioural problems, and race. It looks specifically at the use of board rates as a strategy to recruit foster parents and at efforts to recruit African American foster homes to serve African American children.

Abstract:
This chapter presents developmental and attachment theory approaches to understanding the impacts of political violence on children and families. It argues that each developmental period provides unique resources and vulnerabilities. The chapter focuses particularly on infancy and adolescence. Both are periods in human life when the most intensive socioemotional, neurocognitive, and psychophysiological reorganizations take place. The chapter suggests an attachment theory approach as a way of increasing the understanding of fetal and infant well-being, dyadic interaction, and parenting in conditions of war and political violence. Research based on attachment theory also guides our understanding of adolescents’ socioemotional, cognitive, and behavioral responses to political violence and trauma. The chapter discusses the developmental and attachment theoretical implications for interventions with victims of violence and trauma-affected infants, adolescents, and their families.

Abstract:
"Introduction: Place attachment is multi-dimensional and depends on a reciprocal relationship between behavior and experience. It comes from environmental psychology, and it has its roots in the theory of attachment because of an emotional link between an individual and a place. The present paper aims to describe the psychometric characteristics of the Slovak version of The Workplace Attachment Styles Questionnaire (Srima, 2018). Methods: The original questionnaire consists of 15 items with a Likert scale ranging from totally disagree to agree. The research sample consisted of 645 working adults of a convenience sample, aged from 16 to 78 years, consisting of 54.9% women, from various work fields (finance, sales, education). We randomly divided the sample into two halves for separate studies. Results: In the first study with 323 adult participants, we used exploratory factor analysis to examine its construct validity. According to exploratory factor analysis, we reduced the 15-item questionnaire to a 9-item structure with three original factors: secure (AM = 6.23, SD = 2.32), dismissive (AM = 3.64, SD = 2.54), and preoccupied (AM = 3.64, SD = 2.31) workplace attachment styles, with an average internal consistency of 0.75. In the second study with 322 participants, we executed the confirmatory factor analysis, which confirmed the three-factor structure, with an average internal consistency of 0.65. Discussion: The results confirmed the original three-factor structure of The Workplace Attachment Styles Questionnaire with 9 original items instead of 15. This paper contributes to the shorter version of the Workplace Attachment Styles questionnaire adapted to the Slovak population. The study's limitations are the absence of other measurement tools that could verify the construct of workplace attachment itself (Adult Attachment in the Workplace, Experience in Close Relationship Questionnaire). That is also what is worth doing in the next research."

Abstract:
Abstract Although realistic complex structures are usually difficult to model theoretically, fuzzy structure theory enables one to produce such a model without a detailed knowledge of the entire structure. Using the theory established by Pierce et al. [A. D. Pierce, V. W. Sparrow, and D. A. Russell, J. Vib. Acoust. (to be published), also ASME 93-WA/NCA-17.] regarding fundamental structural-acoustic idealizations for structures with imprecisely known or fuzzy internals, the effects that fuzzy attachments have on different wave types in a primary (or master) structure are examined in this paper. In the theory by Pierce et al., the primary structure that undergoes vibrations is a thin plate mounted in an infinite baffle. On one side of the plate are fuzzy attachments, represented as an array of attached mass-spring-dashpot systems, which are excited by an incident plane pulse. This known theory explains the effects of these attachments on bending waves in the plate. In this paper, the theory is extended to isolated compressional and shear waves in a plate. While studying this new problem, it is discovered that coupling effects occur when the plate and attachment properties are not uniform in the direction perpendicular to the wave propagation. Hence, unlike the bending wave theory which models a finite thin plate with point attached oscillators, the new wave type theory uses a thin plate infinite in one direction with line attached oscillators also infinite in the same direction. For both the compressional and shear waves, it is found that the fuzzy attachments add an apparent frequency dependent mass and damping to the plate. These results are similar to those for the bending wave theory.

Abstract:
Liquid sprays characteristics such as the droplet size and the dispersion angle are determined by the atomizer design and the physical properties of the liquid and the surrounding gas. One of the options to change these characteristics is to attach a specially designed piece to the nozzle exit. While there can be a variety of shapes of such attachments, we chose a conical geometry to exploit its axial symmetry and, at the same time, obtain the results that can be generalized to other configurations. Thus, we investigate an addition of the conically shaped attachment to the premixed gas-assisted high-pressure atomizer with the previously developed numerical model. It is a two-fluid Eulerian-Eulerian model with a catastrophic phase inversion that was developed for compressible gas-liquid mixtures and can be applied to both the flow through the nozzle-atomizer and to the dispersion of the spray. The model also accounts for the break-up and coalescence effects of bubbles and droplets. Our investigation reveals that the conical nozzle attachments act as spray limiters by reducing the natural expansion angle of a spray. Also, the droplets produced by the nozzle with a conical addition tend to be larger than the ones obtained with a stand alone nozzle. The largest droplets were generated by the smallest attachment angle considered −10°. With the increase of the angle, the spraying characteristics become closer to the ones of the stand alone nozzle. It can be concluded that the conical shape of the attachments with a relatively small angle may be used when higher jet penetration and lower dispersion are desirable. The attachments with larger angles do not offer a substantial difference from the stand alone nozzle. Another important conclusion is that the dispersion of the jet is determined by the radial momentum transferred to the liquid before or immediately after the phase inversion takes place. Thus, for improved dispersion, the area where the atomization is taken place should not be restricted.

Abstract:
Abstract The level of detail required for accurate structural acoustic modeling of fluid loaded structures remains an issue of significant debate. Analytical solutions are rarely available, and discrete numerical solutions are typically too complex for ready extraction of physical understanding. In addition, numerical techniques introduce their own explicit scales, through the minimum mesh dimension. However, the wavenumber based formulation of the surface variational principle describes the surface pressure and displacement as a comparatively small set of interacting waves. Coupling the SVP with distributed methods of representing structural attachment features provides a means to introduce, control and investigate features of differing scales. We present here a technique for assessing the critical resolution scales for a fluid loaded two-dimensional plate. For feature attachments, we consider a line-mass elastically suspended by a line-spring from the wetted plate. We then use a spatial expansion for the elastic attachment to the wetted plate. The excitation applied to the plate is taken as a concentrated harmonic force. With the excitation held fixed, the influence of the scale of the feature spatial representation on the radiated power is assessed.

Abstract:
The aim of this work is to show that is possible to apply the Nonlinear Energy Sink (NES) concept to protect seismically excited eccentric steel structures through Targeted Energy Transfer (TET). We consider, as the primary (linear) system, a small-scale four-storey unsymmetrical-plan building, modeled as a twelve-degree-of-freedom-system, with floors sufficiently rigid so that the frame can reasonably be considered as shear-type and with additional eccentric mass for each floor. To the primary (linear) system, we connect two NESs, which are non-smooth and precisely the vibro-impact devices (VI-NESs), both placed on the top floor. In order to analyze the dynamics of the controlled model (structure with VI-NESs), we study the performance and the robustness of the augmented structure excited by a set of Eurocode8 (EC8) spectrum compliant earthquakes. Our purpose is to check the effectiveness of the VI-NESs to different earthquake excitations, that is, testing that an optimal VI-NES setting computed for a specific earthquake will still produce satisfactory results for the other earthquakes. We show that the nonlinear attachments are capable of engaging in transient resonance with linear modes at arbitrary frequencies by generating a one-way irreversible (on the average) transfer of the energy of vibration from the primary structure to local attachment. There the energy is confined and locally dissipated without “spreading” back to the main structure because of the instantaneous internal resonance. As energy decreases due to damping the conditions for Transient Resonance Capture (TRC) fail and escape from resonance capture takes place.

Abstract:
Traction experiments with the seven-spotted ladybird beetles Coccinella septempunctata (L.) (Coleoptera, Coccinellidae) were carried out to study the influence of surface structure on insect attachment. Force measurements were performed with tethered walking insects using a load cell force transducer. For each beetle, forces were measured on five different substrates: (1) smooth glass plate; (2) smooth solid Al2O3 (sapphire) disc; (3 – 5) porous Al2O3 discs (anodiscs, back side) with the same pore diameter (220 – 235 nm), but different porosity (28, 42 and 51%). Males (N = 10) and females (N = 10) were used in experiments (10 single runs on each surface). Additionally, inversion tests were performed after each traction force measurement. The force ranged from 0.368 to 10.370 mN in males and from 0.514 to 6.262 mN in females. In both sexes, the highest force values were obtained on the smooth glass and sapphire surfaces, where males generated considerably higher forces compared to females. On all three porous substrates, forces were significantly reduced in both males and females, and the only difference for surfaces was obtained between two extremes: anodiscs with the highest (51%) and lowest (28%) porosity. Males produced essentially lower forces than females on anodiscs samples. Experimental insects performed well and showed normal locomotion on both smooth surfaces. On all anodiscs samples, beetles usually were not able to get a grip and slid over the surface, refused to walk and came to a standstill or even turned over on their backs. When substrates were inverted to 90° and 180°, insects were still able to remain attached to both the glass and sapphire samples, but failed on anodiscs. The reduction of insect attachment on anodiscs surfaces is explained by (1) possible absorption of the secretory fluid from insect pads by porous media and (2) effect of surface roughness.

Abstract:
Ribs are the stiffening members in the wing of air plane. Ribs usually have a thin flat plate shape accommodating cutouts, stiffeners and attachments. Most of the time there is a failure of rib due to critical buckling load even though the component is stressed well below the ultimate stress. Hence the rib is designed to carry maximum buckling load. The objective was to increase the critical buckling strength and reduce the weight of the rib. Linear static and buckling analysis were performed on the idealized configuration using FEM packages. Simply supported rectangular plate with different number of inline holes subjected to compression load was evaluated. The material considered was aluminum alloy. Various parametric studies were carried out to arrive at the optimum rib thickness and cross section. Once the optimum thickness of the plate was found out, reduction in the weight of the plate was done by providing various in line circular holes. From the study it was found that inserting circular hole in the plate enhances the buckling strength of the plate. The buckling strength of the plate was increased as the number of holes increased.

Abstract:
We consider the problem of depicting possible periodic motions of a strongly nonlinear system in the frequency-energy plane. The particular case of a 2-degree-of-freedom, linear primary structure coupled to a 2-DOF, nonlinear attachment is examined in detail. While there exist numerical tools for the semiautomatic computation of such frequency-energy plots (FEPs), the presence of multiple essential (nonlinearizable) nonlinearities in the present system introduces new challenges in their application. Furthermore, the multiple degrees of freedom of the nonlinear subsystem allow the existence of complex nonlinear normal modes localized there but exhibiting more complicated resonances than those previously observed in the study of a single-DOF nonlinear attachment. The FEP generated for a laboratory-scale mechanical system is interpreted to explain the transitions and energy transfers that occur in the simulated transient response of the combined system following broadband shock excitation.

Abstract:
Abstract Recently, the authors developed analytical expressions for the dispersions of Floquet waves that propagate in a structure consisting of a plate with multiple arrays of line attachments. The dispersions of these Floquet waves, and in particular the imaginary parts of their wavenumbers, quantify the attenuation of vibrational energy in space as the frequency of a local excitation is varied. Understanding how the parameters of the attached structures, such as their spacings and impedances, affect the Floquet wave dispersions could provide further means to include consideration of energy localization or distribution in the structural design process. Such an understanding is developed in the present work by identifying those cases in which the treatment of certain arrays can be greatly simplified. In particular, limiting cases of small and large array spacings are investigated for which the treatment of particular arrays can be greatly simplified. Such simplifications are not immediately obvious without access to analytical expressions for the Floquet wavenumbers, as the dynamics of all arrays are coupled through the plate. Results presented here will aid the structural design community by indicating which design changes most effectively control energy distribution and by indicating when simplified finite element models of multiple-array structures are possible.

Abstract:
Gas Foil Bearings (GFB) have a wide field of applications, from air cycle machines to microturbomachinery. A GFB basically consists of a foil (top foil) that lies over a corrugated foil (bump foil) that acts as a compliant spring. The rotation of the shaft introduces the fluid into the bearing and the pressure generated into the gap between the shaft and the top foil supports the rotor. The foils are attached to the case in a fixed point; usually they are welded to the bearing case. In addition to being rather cumbersome to build, this welded union is a potential point of failure. This work presents a new proposal of foils and case union. Foils are not welded to the case; they are placed or slid into a groove which avoids the strain concentration. This also permits the replacement of any foil in case of damage and to change the bump foil to modify the load capacity or the rotordynamic coefficients if required. The proposed assembly is experimentally tested by measuring its static stiffness in different radial directions of the fixed point. Results for static stiffness are presented and discussed.

Abstract:
In current bridge design specifications and evaluation manuals from the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO LRFD) (AASHTO, 2018), the detail category for base metal at the toe of transverse stiffener-to-flange fillet welds and transverse stiffener-to-web fillet welds to the direction of the web and hence, the primary stress) is Category C′. In skewed bridges or various other applications, there is sometimes a need to place the stiffener or a connection plate at an angle that is not at 90 degrees to the web. As the plate is rotated away from being 90 degrees to the web, the effective “length” of the stiffener in the longitudinal direction increases. However, AASHTO is currently silent on how to address the possible effects on fatigue performance for other angles in between these two extremes. This report summarizes an FEA study that was conducted in order to investigate and determine the fatigue category for welded attachments that are placed at angles other than 0 or 90 degrees for various stiffener geometries and thicknesses. Recommendations on how to incorporate the results into the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications are included in this report.
