Abstract:
Abstract:
Vaccination is one of the most effective public health interventions in the world, saving millions of lives and preventing the onset of debilitating diseases. With widespread emergence of multi-drug resistant pathogens, the importance of preventative medicine has become even more apparent. However, one of the limiting factors in developing novel vaccines that are both safe and highly immunogenic is the availability of adjuvant delivery systems licensed for human use. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role gold nanoparticles could play as an effective vaccine delivery system. A v

Abstract:

Abstract:
This project combines oncolytic Vaccinia virus (VV) with irinotecan (CPT-11) for the treatment of cancer. VV can infect, replicate in and destroy cancer cells, yet leave healthy cells relatively unaffected. CPT-11 is a chemotherapeutic of which ~5% is converted to the more active chemotherapeutic SN-38 by endogenous carboxylesterase (CE) enzymes. SN-38 is a topoisomerase I inhibitor that induces DNA double strand breaks, leading to growth arrest and apoptosis. Consequently, VV has been engineered to express a more effective isoform of the CE enzyme. The virus’ tumour tropism should restrict en

Abstract:
Yersinia pestis has been identified as a potential agent of biological warfare or bioterrorism and presents a particular challenge to vaccine developers because of the severity and potential transmissibility of the pneumonic form of the disease in humans. A Y. pestis-derived fusion protein (F1-V) has shown great promise as a protective antigen in murine studies. Here, initial studies were done to examine the ability of different prime-boost regimens, including parenteral, mucosal, and transcutaneous delivery, to induce a specific immune response of high titer and long duration. Abstract:
The heparan sulfate (HS) component of heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs) has been implicated in the initiation of several viral infections, including vaccinia virus (VACV). A cell infected with VACV releases two different forms of VACV, namely the mature virus (MV) released following the death of infected cells and which infects neighbouring cells, and the enveloped virus (EV) ejected from infected cells for long-range dissemination. The relative role of HS in the infectivity of the different forms of VACV is unclear. Furthermore, there is little known about the fine specificity of t
