Abstract:
Collisionless turbulence is common in astrophysical magnetic fields and plasmas. The determination of the transport of high-energy charged particles both parallel and perpendicular to the average magnetic field in such a system is of considerable interest. It is recognized that the turbulent magnetic field has important effects on the transport of charged particles and that the properties of different turbulence models may significantly affect the resulting transport properties. A number of different magnetic turbulence models have been proposed in the last several decades. We present here the

Abstract:
A planetary nebula (PN) consists of material, mainly gas, that has been ejected from a star on the asymptotic giant branch of its life cycle. This material emits electromagnetic radiation due to photoionization and recombination, collisional and radiative excitation or free-free radiation. The envelope of material moves outwards from the central star and may take one of a variety of shapes. These shapes are believed to be sculpted by the stellar wind, magnetic fields and interactions with a binary companion. However, within a time scale of as little as 10 000 years the nebula fades from view a

Abstract:
One of the earliest indications of magnetic fields acting in the solar atmosphere came at the beginning of the 20th century when George Hale noted a "decided definiteness of structure" in photographs within the Hydrogen Balmer-alpha line core. Fine structure both in the chromosphere and in the corona result from processes that are not well understood but accepted as a consequence of the solar magnetic field. Our knowledge of this field is lacking, and until recently, the assumed relationship between fine thermal structure and the magnetic field remained untested. Here, spectropolarimetric dia

Turbulent magnetic fields are ubiquitous in space physics and astrophysics. The influence of magnetic turbulence on the motions of charged particles contains the essential physics of the transport and acceleration of energetic charged particles in the heliosphere, which is to be explored in this thesis. After a brief introduction on the energetic charged particles and magnetic fields in the heliosphere, the rest of this dissertation focuses on three specific topics: 1. the transport of energetic charged particles in the inner heliosphere, 2. the acceleration of ions at collisionless shocks, an

In this thesis work I have been concerned with modeling the magnetic eld of planet Mercury. With this goal in mind, I tested a new method for modeling the time dependent magnetic eld of a planet, the Time Variable Equivalent Source Dipole method. I showed that in the case that applies to Mercury, namely a concentration of observations over the northern hemisphere, this method gives better results than the standard Spherical Harmonic method. The main conclusion of this thesis is that, assuming that the secular variation of Mercury is around one tenth of its main eld, in amplitude, the
