Full textOur research is concerned with the stakes and forms of the development of an alliance-based strategy. The aim is clearly to assess an overall coherence in the diversity of alliances strategic management, notwithstanding the dynamics of each particular alliance. Stemming from the limits of the traditional approach to strategic alliances, the analysis centres on the management of a portfolio of alliances, stressing the link with corporate strategy. This allows for a greater understanding of the way in which the firm may create and monitor new competitive combinations. The literature review insists on the necessity of a multidimensional management of alliances and provides different classes of typology, all based on the related issues of cooperation and competition, so as to distinguish between the four roles of value creation and articulate them according to strategic goals. The study offers a new representation of an alliance-based strategy, based on the portfolio analysis as well as a declination of the research propositions to account for the gains or losses in the firm's autonomy. Nearly 50 interviewed executive managers brought their vision and their experience of alliances, dealing with such different sectors as energy, chemical, automobile, defence, and telecommunication. In most case, studies confront the evolution of each alliance and their interaction with the strategy of the different partners. This explorative approach shows that long-term competitivity acquired thanks to the development of an alliance-based strategy, cannot be solely measured by the "good management" of the alliances; i. E. In its narrow sense the control of ex ante objectives. The main factor seems to be the opportunities of value creation that are slowly emerging. Thus, a set of portfolio is developed in order to fit the need of differentiated management of alliances, while maintaining an overall coherence for the system. A few case studies are further provided in order to gain a thorough understanding of the specific dynamics of a strategy of alliances and the features of different competitive forms thereof

Full textDeveloped twenty years ago by american consulting firms, portfolio planning tools have widely spread out among diversified compagnies all over the world. They are still abundantly described in the strategic litterature and used in many firms. This thesis deals with the theory of strategy, the theoretical foundations of the bcg and mc kinsey approaches and the spread out of strategic matrix. This analysis casts serious doubts on the scientific rigour and validity of these planning tools. Implemenation problems are then cautiously studied. The participation in a strategic planning exercise in a large french industrial corporation helped to identify the difficulties encountered by firms using these approaches as a formalized strategic-thinking method. Finaly, we try to explain the keeping of these tools by critically examining their numerous functions (improvement of decision-taking, awareness to the environnement, rite,. . . )

Full textIn this dissertation, I try to give a better qualitative understanding of the macroeconomic effects of unemployment benefits. The two most important question i ask is the comparison of the positive properties of unemployment insurance and of unemployment assistance, which constitute the second part of the dissertation, and the determination of the global generosity of unemployment benefits, which constitute the third part of the dissertation. The first part propose a survey of the literature. In the first chapter, i focus on models where the probability of being unemployed depends only on individuals' behaviour while in the second chapter, unemployment arises because of imperfect competition in the wage setting. In the two other parts of the dissertation, i use a dynamical wage bargaining model in which search effort does no matter. In chapter 3, i show that the digressiveness of unemployment benefits might increases the unemployment rate. In chapter 4,1 show that indexing unemployment benefits on past wage earned increases the wage pressure and the equilibrium unemployment. Chapter 5 looks at the level of the replacement ratio that maximises different steady-state welfare criterions. The optimal replacement ratio according to unemployed workers is higher than the one according to employed workers, which is itself higher than the one according to the sum of utility of every workers. At last, the replacement ratio that maximises profits is null. The last chapter introduces a voting process on the level of the replacement ratio so as to understand why rational agents supports levels of replacement ratio that leads to a positive level of the unemployment rate. We prove the existence of a negative relation between the unemployment rate and the replacement ratio

Full textUntil now, studies have mostly been interested in the firms' strategic attitudes to intregrate ecology. Our method differs of those approaches in that it assumes that the integration ef ecology is concretized by most major firms and gradually wins over smaller ones. The management of ecological risks encompasses many fields, economic, technological, sociological and political. This dimensional multiplicity adds to the interest of the analysis of ecostrategy on both levels of strategic decisions and management tools. In the face of the diversity in strategic ecological impact, the problem arises of a definition of methods and principles of action. We have orientated our study on the assumption of a lack of capacity, on the part of ecostrategy, to convince its various partners. It is capital that its value be enhanced so as to support the firm's efforts and turn it into a differentiating element. Two hypotheses enable us to answer the logic of the approch. First, the firm adopts ecostrategy to fend off the ecological peril. Second, ecostrategy must be relayed by ecomarketing so as to ensure its implementation. An initial check of those hypotheses has been empirically effected with the help of two investigations. One was operated upon a sample of 112 firms to test the importance of ecological strategy. The second one bore on a sample of 596 persons in order to assess the interest of ecomarketing. The share left to the management of ecological risk in a firm pleads in favour of its validation through economic and strategic management theorisation. The theoretical approch relies, in economic terms, on spotlighting the intemalization of those externalities created by the enterprise. At the level of the firm, the standart intemalization becomes an integration of the ecological risk by the means of ecostrategy. This theoretical support induces an integration in the course of strategic reflexion that expresses itself in the necessary valorisation by ecomarketing of such ecostrategic actions as are undertaken by the firm. The theory of strategic management thus enables ecomarketing to find a theoretical reference model

Full textIn a context of strong competition, many companies will seok to improve the performance of their supply chain. Changes are necessary when the supply chain becomes obsolete or in case of signicative changes like mergers, outsourcing or substantial variations of the demand. This research aims at modelling and solving a supply chain design and planning problem over a strategic horizon with some operations research algorithms. The main decision variables concern the facilities that may be opened, expanded or closed, as well as capacity planning and the management of material flow along the supply chain. The objective is to minimise the total logistic cost while satisfying the demand. Additional options include, among others, the possibility to subcontract a part of the production, the possibility to increase the capacity of some facilities. The problem is modeled by a mixed-integer linear program where the integer variables are binary. Three resolution methods are developed. The first is a heuristic based on linear relaxation and some rounding procedures. An improved version of this method is developed by replacing the linear relaxation with the Difference of Convex Functions (D. C. ) approach. The last method is a decomposition method based on Lagrangean relaxation. The results of these methods are compared with the ones obtained with the solver Xpress-MP

Full textDespite a large body of literature on the topic and a continuously improving understanding from professionals, real options are not widely used to value firms. Numerous assumptions have been raised to explain the various obstacles to their adoption. Limits concerning the usefulness of financial option valuation models outside financial markets are the most salient, but they are not the only ones: Carrying out a valuation implies assumptions concerning the nature of the firm, as well as about its strategy. Including real options in this context raises numerous difficulties explored in the course of this research. Three cases have been studied: In the New Economy, in the industrial R&D, and, lastly natural resources. Their presentation, first, illustrates the theoretical exploratory analysis, and, second, validates the worth of real options as a management tool

Full textThis dissertation aims at understanding why and how a firm, working within a framework of strategic intent drawing upon its own resources, manages to transform its competitive environment. Breaking with the traditional approaches to corporate strategy, the analysis centers on the firm, thereby permitting a more thorough understanding of the way the firm actually influences its environment. The review of the literature deals with the concepts of resources, organizational skills, organizational learning and strategic intent. These concepts provide the basis of the investigative model and research assumptions used to explain the competitive paths followed by firms. The goal is to clearly understand the mechanisms that allow firms to radically upset the balance of power in their competitive universes. To test the validity of the model, three case studies have been written. These studies deal with three firms : Salomon (sporting goods), Seb (small domestic appliances) and air liquide engineering division (industrial gas). In each case, resource portfolios, resource management mechanisms and strategic visions are studied. Above all, the study aims at assessing to what extent the resource portfolio and the underlying vision have contributed to transforming the competitive structure. The case studies show that, when firms operate with strategic intent, i. E. , they manifest grand aspirations and create an intentional 'misfit' between their ambitions and resources, their corporate portfolios of resources and skills undergo stretch and leverage effects. Thus, implementation of strategic intent leads to the formulation of subversive strategies, overthrowing the established order and destabilizing competitors. Ideally, a new balance is created, where the critical success factors are closely linked to the resources held by the firm that has led the industry transformation. Strategic intent brings this transformation about by breaking with, over the long term, the habits and standards of competition in the industry

All the works from this literature focus in conclusion on almost no practice of such devices within the entreprises. However, this works are questinable because of showing a simplistic and incomplete vision of the involved process. A more complete work leaning on the principle of field research method and based on a pragmatic conception anables ones to reveal the reality of practical experience which is rather diversified and which comprises variables degrees of sophistication. Three configurations of strategic control practices are identified : the first one gets closer to an "ideal" strategic control device, the second one shows a characteristic signed of transition situation, the third reflects a classic management control system on certain points

Strategic behaviors are taken on the basis of miles & snow typology (1978) : prospectors, defenders, analyzers and reactors. Managerial representations of environment introduce a temporal continuum : present (perceptions of environnemental structure and dynamic), past (determinants of firms and sector evolution over twenty years) and future (of the sector providing managers strategic vision). Our work aims to analyse links between strategic behaviors and environment perceptions, among corporate managers. Our empirical investigations have concerned seventeen small business managers, representing the north of france flax industry as a whole. On the basis of semi-structured interviews and the realization of firms monographies, we proceeded to strategic behaviors and environment perceptions caracterization. Main results contribute to note the diversity of both elements and nonexistence of obvious links between them

Full textThis thesis links up with the problematic ethic formalized in business. If an ethical behaviour can improve the business results by limiting hidden and outside costs, nevertheless the structural choice which represents using a behaviour code, reduces the potentiality which is expressed by a capacity of tested decision making with regard to the considerations and particularities of a contemporary moral philosophy. We can analyse, by looking at the remarks of business managers, a confusion in the discursive registers, as well as a discrepancy between the way of speaking and the practice observed on the field. The function of a research in management which is interested in ethics is to propose solutions in order to reduce this difference if the choice of enhancing ethics is part of the business strategy, if it is not, then to reveal hidden, underlying ideals which work through communicational methods, or the choice of business structures

Full textThe thesis proposes a model of strategic decision in SMEs, inspired by catalysis phenomenon in chemistry. The study is focused on the starting phase of decision process. The example of strategic decision is the implication into an european technological partnership. The first part presents the theoretical (decision, technological partnership), methodological (exploratory qualicative study based on case-studies) and epistemological (analogical reasoning with chemistry as a form of abduction) designs. The intermediary result is a provisory version of our model constituted in propositions. The second part contains the empirical observations in France and in the Netherlands presented through cross-analyses of cases'pairs which are significative of possible options : proactivity, reactivity, catalysis and non-catalysis. These analyses let us formulate our final model of catalysis in decision making in SMEs. Our research facilitates the understanding of decision making process in SMEs. It insists on the existence of a catalytic effect with the notions of favorable structure, poisons of catalyst and proximity. These notions are moderated by the necessity of taking national values into account

Full textThe concept of symbiotic marketing was proposed in 1966 by adler. He defined symbiotic marketing as the alliance, of resources or programs between two or more independant organizations, destined to improve the commercial potential of each. This work examines, firsts, the different facets of symbiotic marketing. An analytic and normative presentation is given in order to better appreciate the nature, the scope, the methodes of application, and the functioning mechanisms of inter-firm cooperations. Next, this research attempts to evaluate the impact of symbiotic marketing on the conceptual and theoretical edifice where it will find its place. An appreciation of the optic offered by sylbiotic marketing is made with respect to economic competition, organizational structures, the market, and the mission of marketing. In this manner, symbiotic marketing valorizes certain new research and underlines the limits of certain traditional views

Full textNowadays, the industrial context is characterised by the uncertainty and the complexity of its evolutions. Thus, companies have to evolve introducing internal changes as a response to the external forces. These internal changes should impact several levels of the organisation (strategic, organisational and informational levels). These related to the Information System (IS), are tackled in the IS alignment field. Contributions to IS alignment focus mainly on the so-called “internal” strategic alignment. However, to address the complexity and uncertainty of the external environment, it is proposed to consider two complementary levels enabling a “complete” alignment: the alignment with the environment and the alignment with the evolutions. For Technical IS (supporting product design and manufacturing processes) these three alignment levels take a specific form. The main objective of this work is thus to propose an approach enabling the complete alignment of Technical IS. Firstly, we propose an analysis framework in order to evaluate existing IS alignment approaches, towards the tackled alignment levels. The results of this evaluation show that alignment with the environment and the evolutions are not sufficiently supported yet. In this boarder, it is propose to adapt and operationalise the Strategic Alignment Model (SAM), of which an extension is proposed, and the Multi-Screen Model. The Extended SAM extends the original SAM by adding the specific application domain for Technical IS and formalising new “extended” alignment sequences. For the Multi-Screen Model, its conceptual elements are formalised. Corresponding evolution mechanisms enabling the construction of evolution sequences are proposed. In order to ensure the complete alignment of Technical IS, it is proposed to couple the Extended SAM and the Multi-Screen Model. At last, these models are enriched by a minimal alignment approach composed of four stages, exploiting the proposals of this work. The use of the approach is illustrated through an industrial a study case

Full textThe research first of all compares different analytical approaches to the study of the firms industral environment and measures their degree of appropriatness. We show that the strategic group is theoretically the most appropriate since it allows an averall analytical view of an industry. We also show that the concept has not been validated in the relevant litterature in the field. The reasons for this lack of validation is shown : they are closesylinked to the way the concept is rendered operational and to an insufficient corpus of hypothesis. Based on existing litterature ion management and industrial organization, a new modelisation of the concept is proposed. The hypothesis put forward are equally justified. The model was tested in the pre-cooked food industry. This industry was chosen because its structure tends to be particularly complex to analyse. The industry strategic groups were identified through clustreing analysis using a sample of 32 firms. The hypothesis put forward were all validated. The identified strategic groups have distinct levels of performance, distinct risks levels, undergo and exert distinct level of competitivity and are subjected to distinct conditions of success. Finally the intensity of intra-group competition is alwayshigher than that of inter

Full textThe central question related to the dynamics of competition resides in setting up and maintaining a competitive advantage. Since the latter can only be obtained at the expense of rival firms, it arouses envy, mimetism and thus conflict. Several answers have been found to this according to available literature (understanding, cooperation, collusion and differentiation). The perspective herein, however, differs from the above mentioned in that it proposed to link setting up and maintaining competitive advantage to undertaking actions unable to provoke reactions either by delaying them or by rendering them difficult to imitate. It is thus essential to use an action-reaction unit of analysis both to explain the real dynamics involved in daily competitive behavior modes and to appreciate as well as highlight the characteristics of actions that do not provoke reactions. Four characteristics linked to actions are thereby brought to light : irreversibility, innovation, specificity and intensity as well as three characteristics concerning reactions : occurrence, reaction delay and imitation. The results show that intense actions meet with much resistance even though the delay of reaction is quite long, irreversible, innovating and specific actions draw attention either because they require a considerable delay of reaction or because they rely on decisive tangible and/or intangible resources or because they do not raise the suspicion of those taking part in the competitive game. In terms of performance, it seems that undertaking actions and their ensuing appropriate reactions are associated to the positive results obtained by firms. The action-reaction unit of analysis thus appears pertinent to the understanding of the wealth of competitive situations and to the identification of the characteristics of actions needed to build up competitive advantage avoiding competition

Its central question is "how to build a management framework for these companies to stress their coordination, work progress, plannings and orders, projects, contracts or new products costs ?" To answer this question, we have conducted an extensive review of the organizational learning literature on piloting and project management. Activity based costing and project costing mechanisms, compared by ECOSIP group, have shown that it could be interesting for our subject to focus on the project activity concept, thiner and richer than the project. Then, we have conducted a study on several companies to understand all the potentialities of this concept. The results show that this project activity concept is really adapted to evaluate costs, coordination, work progress and planning and could be well integrated in a multidimensional diagnosis model

Full textThis thesis is interested by the problem of valuation of firms as it can be seen in the mass circulation newspapers, and, in particular, as to concerns financial operations that firms have constantly to offer to improve their management and to interest their shareholders. In parallel, we make the point on the theoretical approaches for which we sketch a typology. We describe 17 valuation methods and also 17 different financial operations. . They are mainly exposed through their presentations in general public newspapers or internet sites. The starting idea is to question the problem of perfect market hypothesis, at least in a modest seeing. . At first we make a synthesis according to the different information sources. We seek also to put in light the importance of the new norms in the today literature for common shareholders and which lead to establish a value to shares, -stocks or obligations-, that underlie the main financial operations. We also present in detail a financial analysis as it is done in reality. The way these valuations are justified is also examined. Several investigations are considered in the context of wrong or biased information. And the question of clarity and exactness is also posed in an ethical system.

Choosing an anthropological approach for africa culture and systemic approach for the rationality of management, in the third chapter, we firstly elaborate a schedule of empirical study specifying the variables and hypothezises of the research and secondly, we carry on throught a questionnaire, an investigation in 74 firms of cameroon. The fourth chapter presents the characteristics and the level of performance of the 74 firms. In the fifth chapter analyzing the statistical relations between civilizations values, rationality of management and the firms performance, it clearly appears that the performance level is more associated with the rationality of management than the civilization values, this confirms our thesis. In the sixth chapter concerning our contribution, we propose some guidelines of training in management in africa

Full textFrom a conjecture on the theorical validity to adopt a cross-sectional analysis of services activities, this thesis presents a propositional framework to conceive the competitive field of service firms. In conformity with epistemological and methodical principles of strategy thinking and strategy theory, three questions articulate this result : * the conbined logics of services activities (support adaptation inter pretation) ; * the complex structuration of the strategic field because of the double face of networks (services relations services deliveries) which brings a double competitive game ; * the change formulas and the strategic postures analysed by crossing the transformation types (concentrical development enlarged exploitation) and the change propensions (transposition of the activities dissociation). The conceptual construction is argumented by examinating services economy theories, network analysis, firm theory and strategic management and confronting the main points with the conceptions of leading managers, and confronting the main points with the conceptions of leading managers from more than 20 services firms (EDF, AGF, Sodexho, Canal+, Ernst and Young, Sogeti, banque Sofinco. . . . . )

Full textThe aim of the thesis is to demonstrate that strategic management is suitable to French public hospitals, under conditions of operating principles. In the first part of the document, it defines the concepts of management, public sector, public management and also everything dealing with public hospitals in France. Then, in the second part of the thesis, a diagnosis of the running of today's hospitals is developed from the analysis of several practices of hundreds of French hospitals, focused on internal, external and integrated strategic items such as quality, continuous education, adequacy to local environment, organizational planning. . . The third part of the document suggests the identification of concepts and operating conditions in order to promote a more strategic management for public hospitals. The model synthesizing the proposals of strategic hospital management is built on three main basis : integration, globalization and balance of management variables underlined in the French hospitals diagnosis context

Full textIn this thesis, we analyze emergent cooperation as a process of structuration. Our primary concern was to provide a description of a cooperation which emerges among actors with divergent interests and logics and who are not submitted to a central authority. This process can be highly time-consuming. In the case of a mineral water company trying to protect its water sheet endangered by agricultural practices, we found that the actors got involved into such a process. We identify several phases and various mechanisms of structuration in that process. Simplification and complexification, as well as irreversibility phenomena play an essential part in the progress of the situation. We show that the emergence of a global interaction structure is the first step towards cooperation. It is a pre-condition for a change the links between the actors, which can turn into formal coordination structures. These phases lead to a global coordination which is the basic means to achieve cooperation. At the end of the thesis, we distinguish and assess two extreme ways for the global coordination: the management by a leading actor or the regulation through self-organization

Full textThis thesis has studied how firms organize themselves to manage collectively the presence or the absence of GMO’s from their territory. Based on several case studies, this research shows that grain merchants were able to federate, coordinate or influence all the stakeholders to control their agricultural lands. Our results indicate that it goes through cooperation relationships between rival operators among coopetition strategies. This thesis reveals the existence of three generic forms of coopetition : 1) The first is characterized by a mechanism of coordination based on direct and informal relationships through tacit conventions and a strong embednesses of the relationship. 2) The second is characterized by formal (contract, charter. . . ) and indirect relationships which need the involvement of a third party in the mechanism of coordination. 3) The third type is characterized by the setting up of a «mediation arena» which allows for the construction of the collective actions. This study shows that various organizational configurations have emerged and have succeeded in generating the coordination and the involvement of the stakeholders in order to manage the agricultural landscape. The context of the management of GMO’s at the French agricultural lands shows that the territory may become a common good. In this context, it must be managed as a collective good that any player constructs and maintains collectively

WE HAVE FOCUSED ON PATRONAGE, INTERPRETED AS A SPONTANEOUS & DISCRETIONARY ANSWER TO SOCIETAL PRESSURES EXERTED BY STAKEHOLDERS OF ITS RESIDUAL ENVIRONMENT OF GIVE ITS SUPPORT TO GENERAL INTEREST CAUSES. OUR EMPIRICAL INVESTIGATION BUILDS ON A COLLECTION OF SECONDARY ECONOMIC DATA AND PRIMARY DATA COLLCTED BY MANAGER INTERVIEWS ON THE PATRONAGE OF 34 LARGE INDUSTRIAL, SERVICE & COMMERCIAL FIRMS. WE DEMONSTRATE THAT PATRONAGE COMMITMENT IS ONE COMPONENT OF THE SOCIETAL PERFORMANCE OF THE FIRM ; THE COMITTED FIRM ALLOCATES NON NEGLIGIBLE RESOURCES TO THESE ACTIONS ; IT USES PATRONAGE AS A MEANS OF COMFORTING ITS SOCIETAL LEGITIMACY ; ITS INVOLMENT COMES FROM A REAL MANAGERIAL DECISION. WE SHOW AS WELL THAT PATRONAGE IS FREQUENTLY ASSOCIATED WITH HIGH ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE
