Meli, Domenico Bertoloni. Experimentation in the Physical Sciences of the Seventeenth Century. Edited by Jed Z. Buchwald and Robert Fox. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199696253.013.8.

Abstract:
This article examines experimentation in the physical sciences during the seventeenth century. It first provides an overview of some features and problems of seventeenth-century experimentation before discussing experiments on the science of motion, with particular emphasis on falling bodies, the inclined plane and projectiles, and the pendulum. It then considers barometric experiments associated with Torricelli and their aftermath, including Florin Périer’s Puy-de Dôme experiment in 1648 to test whether the mercury in the barometer was lower at the top, Adrien Auzout’s void-in-the-void experiment, and Gilles de Roberval’s carp-bladder experiment. It also describes the experiments of Otto von Guericke and Robert Boyle, along with optical experiments designed to investigate the behaviour and nature of light, including Isaac Newton’s prismatic experiments.

Abstract:
This article evaluates the strengths and limitations of field experimentation. It first defines field experimentation and describes the many forms that field experiments take. It also interprets the growth and development of field experimentation. It then discusses why experiments are valuable for causal inference. The assumptions of experimental and nonexperimental inference are distinguished, noting that the value accorded to observational research is often inflated by misleading reporting conventions. The article elaborates on the study of natural experiments and discontinuities as alternatives to both randomized interventions and conventional nonexperimental research. Finally, it outlines a list of methodological issues that arise commonly in connection with experimental design and analysis: the role of covariates, planned vs. unplanned comparisons, and extrapolation. It concludes by dealing with the ways in which field experimentation is reshaping the field of political methodology.

Baloh, Robert W. Breuer’s Experiments on the Semicircular Canals and Otolith Organs. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190600129.003.0006.

Abstract:
After his groundbreaking work in the mid-1860s, Josef Breuer continued to perform experiments on the inner ear balance receptors in animals. He studied the macules of fish, reptiles, and birds and noted that all these creatures had three macules arranged in the planes of the semicircular canals, perpendicular to one another. By contrast, mammals had only two macules located in the utricle (horizontal plane) and saccule (vertical plane), again perpendicular to each other. He developed the concept of “slip” to describe the movement of the otoconial membrane over the underlying sensory epithelium that occurred with linear displacement or gravity. He developed a mathematical model to hypothesize that in humans there was only one combination of responses from the two macules on each side for a single head position in space.
