Trees were planted along the roads connecting towns and villages so that travellers could rest in their shade. The line of trees also played an informative, strategic and sometimes aesthetic role. Currently, a line of tall vegetation along the street provides shade and relief in cities during hot weather. It is also worth emphasizing that greenery reduces stress factors in large cities. Planting multifunctional trees (e.g., fruit species) in cities can promote genetic conservation, economic activity, ecosystem services, and social cohesion. However, in Indonesia, the relationship between the abundance of fruit tree species and different city characteristics, including their involvement in the national smart city project, is still unknown. In this study, published reports and field surveys were used to evaluate the fruit tree distribution and its relationship with the characteristics of 224 of 514 Indonesian cities in order to identify tree species for multifunctional city gre

Because of its durability and strength, more and more porous concrete has been used for riverbank protection or foundations of greenery. This study described a new type of green roof system without a soil layer on the porous concrete. This paper also discussed reuse of waste (fly ash generated from thermal power stations and aggregate made of ALC panel waste) to configure a newly proposed thin-type green roof system. As a result, the pilot model of lightweight thin type porous planting foundation satisfied the dynamic strength and ensured 30% void ratio needed for viability of vegetation.

The article focuses on surface type ratio in towns and cities and its effect on rainwater expenditures and load on sewer networks. Calculations are provided for different surface coefficients (based on the Belski sewer outlet in Samara). It has been discovered that the more the value of the surface coefficient zmid is, the more expenditures are. The sewer network mentioned above cannot cope with rainwater load. However, bigger pipe diameter or parallel pipe laying is not always possible and/or reasonable. Thus, planting of greenery ought to be considered as a subsidiary way to lift part of the

A small area of forestation and an acute shortage of timber are reasons to seek ways to improve productivity and the rational use of forests in the territory of Kazakhstan. A deficit in timber can be compensated, to some extent, by planting stands of fast-growing plantation species, including top and hybrid Populus spp, which are commonly referred to as “poplar”.There is an increased interest in poplar, globally, due to its organic traits and the economic value it provides, including:rapid growth and ability to produce wood that is technically suitable for cutting within 20 years of planting;a

With increasing awareness of the adverse impacts of climate change, pollution, wildfires, and deforestation, semi-natural environments (SNEs) have garnered significant attention, particularly in urban areas. Tree planting has emerged as a central activity in initiatives led by governments, NGOs, and institutions, expanding urban greenery and green spaces especially in SNEs. However, naturally regenerating tree seedlings in these SNEs resulting from seed dispersal, germination, and growth without direct human intervention face numerous challenges, including removal during sanitation activities,

Trees play a vital role in urban landscapes, yet long-term dynamics in tree populations across different levels of urbanization remain poorly understood. We examined whether current spatial patterns of native tree populations predict future changes by monitoring two native birch species (Betula pendula and B. pubescens) in six residential areas of St. Petersburg, Russia. Birch density declined toward the city centre by 1.87 trees ha−1 km−1. From 2002 to 2022, birch populations in sparsely built-up areas (6–8 km from the centre) declined by 0.15 trees ha−1 year−1 due to ageing and urban develop

Urbanization can increase artificial coverage rates and emissions by causing increases in traffic, which represents a serious health risk to pedestrians. To create pedestrian-friendly environments in urban canyons, this study examined their microclimates and air quality; methods to improve the pedestrian environment were also explored, based on the current street green space practices in Seoul, Korea. Under these current standards, the physiologically equivalent temperature (PET) of the pedestrian roads was predicted to decrease by 1.29–1.44 °C, but this was insufficient to adjust the thermal
