Abstract:
The active antimalarial principles of three traditional medicinal plants, Passerina obtusifolia (Thymelaeaceae), Tetradenia riparia (Labiatea) and Xerophyta retinervis (V elloziaceae) were investigated by employing bioassay guided fractionation. Two novel compounds and five known constituents were isolated from the active fractions of these three plants. The types of compounds isolated included: three triterpenoids (20(29)-Lupene-3α,28- diol (30), 20(29)-Lupene-3α, 16β,28-triol (32) and 3β-Hydroxy-20(29)-Lupen-28-oic acid (42)); two diterpenoids (8-Abietene-7 β,13 β -diol (45) and cariocal (51

This thesis describes phytochemical and biological/pharmacological studies on six medicinal plants. Plant materials were extracted by ethanol, tested for their biological activity and then subjected to "bioassay-guided fractionation" to yield active and inactive compounds. The compounds were identified by standard physico-chemical techniques including UV, IR, NMR and ElMS. The crude ethanol extract of the leaves of Premna shcimperi was found to be antibacterial against gram positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis).

Abstract:
The hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a common virus, with two billion people infected worldwide. It causes approximately 600,000 deaths each year, despite the availability of an effective vaccine since 1982. Maize as a platform for oral vaccination can supply a heat stable vaccine, which does not require syringes or trained personnel to administer. The Hepatitis B Surface antigen was transformed into maize and this seed was used to evaluate expression levels through the breeding process. The transgene was transferred into two elite maize inbreds by backcrossing. Highest expressing ears were selected

Tissue engineers – in order to develop therapies for the treatment of complex neurological injuries and diseases – attempt to recreate elaborate developmental mechanisms in vitro. Neuronal precursor cells are excellent candidates for the study of developmental operations such as cell adhesion, differentiation, and axonal pathfinding. Hyaluronan (HA) is a common polysaccharide that is found extensively throughout the neuronal extracellular matrix (ECM), and can be functionalised and crosslinked to form stable hydrogels that support growing neuronal cells. Hyaluronan hydrogels can be modified ch

African traditional medicine relies largely on the abundant African flora estimated at several tens of thousands of species. These plants, like other living organisms, produce natural products which are organic molecules exhibiting a remarkable wide range of chemical diversity and a multiplicity of biological properties. Over the past 20 years, interest in drugs of plants origin has been reviving and growing steadily. Among the broad spectrum of natural products that are showing promise as possible leads to useful therapeutic agents are the terpenoids. In the present study, selected African me

This thesis describes a phytochemical investigation of four medicinal plants, namely, Agave attenuata (Agavaceae), Balanites maughamii (Balanitaceae), Astrotrichilia parvifolia (Meliaceae) and Combretum fragrans (Combretaceae). Investigations of A. attenuata and B. maughamii were undertaken as biological studies have shown that these plants possess anti-bilharzial properties. Schistosomiasis is an important public health issue in South Africa and attempts to deal with infected rural communities have forced scientists to focus their attention on snail control using plant molluscicides. Ph.D. (Botany)<br>The most well-known tonic plants in South Africa have been used traditionally for the treatment of a great variety of ailments but aspects of their ethnobotany and chemistry remain poorly studied. Possible relationships between their ethnobotany and pharmacology are mostly speculative. In this study, literature reviews of the ethnobotany of these plants were combined with phytochemical screening studies and bitterness taste testing results in order to establish constituent patterns which may contribute to a scientific rationale for the claimed tonic (stimulating) properties o

In this investigation the chemistry of three southern African plants used for medicinal purposes was investigated. The plants were Dioscorea dregeana, Avonia rhodesica and Equisetum ramossisimum. Extracts of all three of these plants have been found to be active on the central nervous system. The structures of the compounds isolated were determined by using 1H and 13C n.m.r., i.f., UV-VIS, - mass spectroscopy and chemical methods. D. dregeana yielded two alkaloids and three aromatic compounds. A. rhodesica contained a large amount of wax which was analysed by GC-MS and its distribution and phy

Infectious diarrhoea is the second largest single cause of mortality in children under the age of five globally. Bacteria are responsible for most diarrhoeal episodes especially in developing countries, and progressive increase in antimicrobial resistance has given rise to the need to investigate other sources of therapy such as medicinal plants. Ten plant extracts were analysed for their antimicrobial activities using the agar well diffusion and broth microdilution method. Three species have been investigated in this project: Iso-ocobullenone (p 23) and its probable precursor (p 27) have been isolated from the leaves and bark of Ocotea kenyensis. This is only the second time that these compounds have been isolated and the first time from this species. The isolation of these two compounds in the leaves establishes a commercially important chemical link with the bark. The bark of the closely related Ocotea bullata is the most sought after source of "muthi" in the Kwa-Zulu Natal region and it is becoming a very scarce commodity. The leaves of Ocotea kenyensis have
