South African traditional healers instruct patients to brew the fresh Hypoxis corm as a tea and then ingest it (Steenkamp, 2006a). Abstract:
The ability of insulin to stimulate glucose uptake into muscle and adipose tissue is central to the maintenance of whole-body glucose homeostasis. Deregulation of insulin action manifests itself as insulin resistance, a key component of type 2 diabetes. Insulin resistance is also observed in HIV patients receiving protease inhibitors. An agent that can reversibly induce an insulin-resistant state would be a very useful tool in developing model systems that mimic the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes. Insulin resistance can arise from defects in insulin signal transduction, changes in the express

Thesis (MTech (Biomedical Technology))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2015.
The increase in antibiotic resistant bacterial and fungal infections and the prevalence of oxidative stress-related conditions including cancers, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes has led to a consensus among pharmaceutical companies, clinicians and researchers that novel antimicrobial and antioxidant approaches are needed. These should be ideally efficacious, non toxic, easily accessible and affordable. There has been an increased interest in the identification of medicinal plants that possess both th

Ph.D. (Chemistry)
The following study was conducted to explore the in vitro antimicrobial and synergistic properties of the two medicinal plants (Elephantorrhiza elephantina, Fabaceae and Pentanisia prunelloides, Rubiaceae), which are widely used in southern Africa. These two plant species are used to remedy various ailments including diarrhoea, dysentery, inflammation, fever, rheumatism, heartburn, tuberculosis, haemorrhoids, skin diseases, perforated peptic ulcers and sore joints. The cytotoxicity of the aqueous and methanol extracts and fractions of both species was studied using the bri
