The thermal plasma production of fumed silica in a transferred arc consists of the decomposition of quartz to SiO (g) and oxygen followed by an oxidizing quench back to SiO2. The particles formed have diameters of the order of 10 to 20 nm and are linked in a three dimensional branched chain aggregate. Previous work by Addona and Munz (1999) demonstrated the technical feasibility of producing fumed silica using this method, but was unable to demonstrate the special rheological properties of the powder. This work introduces a new concept for the synthesis of ultrafine aluminum nitride powder. A transferred arc plasma torch of 6.5 kW was used as a heat source to vaporize an aluminum ingot as a source of aluminum vapour for the synthesis of aluminum nitride outside the plasma chamber. The aluminum vapour produced in the plasma chamber was carried by the argon plasma gas to a tubular synthesis reactor where it reacted with ammonia injected radially. A stable transferred arc was produced with plasmagas containing up to 20 percent molar TiCl$ sb4$ in argon, helium and argon/hydrogen mixtures. This was achieved by replacing the commonly-used thoriated tungsten cathode tip with a tantalum carbide tip. Thus, corrosive reactions at the cathode surface, which were shown to be the cause of the observed instability, were prevented.
