The effects of black polyethylene (PE) mulch alone and in combination with plastic film tunnels (Agronet, Reemay, whiteperforated, clear, and clear-slitted) were studied on morphology and yield of sweet corn in North Logan, Utah. Yields of "Miracle" sweet corn (Zea mays L.) were increased significantly by using black PE mulch and with a combination of various types of plastic row covers, as compared to unmulched soil. Abstract:

Six mulches were compared to no mulch on cantaloupes at Yuma in the Spring of 1996. The IRT film and black mulches caused "Mission" cantaloupes to produce significantly higher early yields than white mulch or no mulch. Silver mulch gave good early and total yields. All mulches seemed to favor total production but in this test differences for total yields between mulched and non-mulched plots were not significant.

Lettuce plants (Lactuca sativa L. var. Ithaca) were transplanted on different beige and black paper mulches and on a coextruded white/black polyethylene mulch in organic soil in 1997 and 1998. Field experiments were undertaken to predict the yield of 'Earligold' muskmelon grown with plastic mulches, rowcovers and thermal water tubes. Mulches were either black, photoselective or clear. An effective way to decrease the use of disposable plastic, a source of growing concern due to its harmful effects on the environment, is by using reusable plastic cups, something that countries like Germany or Australia are already successfully using for several years.
