Abstract Different friction mechanisms for coated board were investigated. Friction due to adhesive forces, interlocking of asperities and plastic deformation, respectively, was evaluated for coated board. The measurements of friction were combined with measurements of surface energy and measurements of gloss variations. The samples coated with only latex showed significant frictional forces but no signs of polishing or plastic deformation. Friction seemed here to depend on adhesive forces and a correlation could be observed between the surface energy and the coefficients of friction. Adhesive

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) and Food Standards Scotland (FSS) sought an opinion from the Joint Expert Group for Food Contact Materials (FCMJEG) whether plastic materials from the open environment that are subsequently recycled could be safely utilised in food contact materials (FCMs). The FCMJEG assessed all available information, including all information and data submitted to the FSA following a call for evidence by the end of January 2024. Environmental or ocean bound plastic (OBP) is a relatively new input material for mechanical recycling and use in final recycled FCMs, hence the avai

Abstract:
This paper focuses not only on the special needs of small states and small island developing states (SIDS) in the challenge to reduce plastics pollution, production and trade, but also on the opportunities. It draws on new information made available in an UNCTAD prototype database that tracks trade in plastics across the entire life cycle and identifies phases in the plastics industry that could offer export opportunities to small states and SIDS. However, this kind of structural transformation will not happen by itself. Part of the solution will depend upon having coherent trade policies, ind

Abstract:
This working paper shows how Maldives can boost recycling to strengthen its solid waste management strategy, protect its blue ocean economy, and create green business opportunities to support its long-term sustainable growth. Estimating under 2 percent of plastic waste is recycled in the island nation, it outlines how factors including high costs, inefficient collection efforts, and a lack of reprocessing facilities are hobbling recycling efforts. It recommends Maldives set up public-private partnerships with waste exporters and recyclers, incentivize domestic demand, and build a modern waste

Abstract:
This paper aims to present a few aspects of the development of a plastic-hardening macro-element model for steel wires in flexible protection systems. First, the material behaviour is obtained using uniaxial tensile tests. Successively, the evolution of the elastic and plastic domain is obtained using a combination of physical tests, analytical models, and numerical simulations. Finally, the results obtained with the macro-element model are compared to those obtained using other approaches found in literature.

The evaluation of the defect tolerance assessment for girth welded joints of seamless pipes for off-shore applications when subjected to large cyclic plastic strains. The reeling laying technique, which is considered to be the most severe from this point of view, has been considered and studied in depth in order to determine how the several plastic strain cycles suffered by the joint during the laying could affect the defect tolerability. Advanced Engineering Critical Assessment methods have been considered in the analysis as the BS 7910 FAD approach implemented with the corrections recommende

Full text
Abstract:
In this paper an isotropic hardening elastoplastic constitutive model for structured soils is applied to the simulation of a standard CPTu test in a saturated soft structured clay. To allow for the extreme deformations experienced by the soil during the penetration process, the model is formulated in a fully geometric non-linear setting, based on: i) the multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient into an elastic and a plastic part; and, ii) on the existence of a free energy function to define the elastic behaviour of the soil. The model is equipped with two bonding-related intern

A great deal of energy can be sourced both directly and indirectly from waste. For example, municipal waste with an energy content of around 60 petajoules is incinerated in Switzerland every year. The energy recovered directly from this waste covers around 4 % of the Swiss energy demand. However, the greatest potential offered by waste management lies in the recovery of secondary raw materials during the recycling process, thus indirectly avoiding the energy-intensive production of primary raw materials. In order to optimise the contribution to the energy turnaround made by waste management, a

Abstract:
The repercussions of COVID-19 resulted in global disruptions to supply and demand as well as shocks to the global production networks. This paper employs a trade analysis approach to assess the impacts of coronavirus on Cambodia’s export performance. Utilising Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) index, changes were analysed using data pre-and post-pandemic to explore the Kingdom’s competitiveness and dynamic export position during this time. We found evidence that COVID-19 has caused a 6 percent decline in Cambodia’s trade in 2020 and a further 7 percent decline in 2021. However, the effect v
