Abstract:
The balance between the costs and benefits of conspicuous signals ensures that the expression of those signals is related to the quality of the bearer. Plastic signals could enable males to maximize conspicuous traits to impress mates and competitors, but reduce the expression of those traits to minimize signaling costs, potentially compromising the information conveyed by the signals. I investigated the effect of signal enhancement on the information coded by the biphasic electric signal pulse of the gymnotiform fish Brachyhypopomus gauderio. Increases in population density drive males to enh

This diploma thesis deals with the issue of the determination of the frost susceptibility of soils in the subgrades of road structures. The theoretical part compares the ways of testing the frost susceptibility in the Czech Republic and other selected countries of the European Union. Furthermore, it also deals with the development of the frost susceptibility index in the Czech Republic. The empirical part focuses on the laboratory testing of the frost susceptibility of the given sample of soil by the direct frost heave method. Moreover, it also deals with the simulation of penetration of frost

Previous thread rolling methods for the plastic limit are shown to be inadequate and inaccurate. Alternative methods for the plastic limit are shown to be imprecise and unreliable. The strength-based concept and use of the fall-cone test to determine the plastic limit are shown to be flawed. An apparatus that replicates Atterberg’s rolling technique, devised and developed by the author, is described, referred to as the Barnes Apparatus. A thread of soil is rolled between two plates configured to permit extrusion and reduction of diameter with much less operator interference than with the stand

La Región San Martín cuenta, en su mayoría, con suelos correspondientes a la fracción fina. Es decir que están compuestos principalmente de arcillas. Para ello, se analizó muestras de las localidades de Saposoa, Moyobamba y Tarapoto. The seismic vulnerability of urban assets exposed to earthquake hazard represents a growing concern in the engineering field due to the potential risk of collapse for the buildings, and the associated devastating consequences for the inhabitants. This concern has led to the development of novel strategies for the assessment of the seismic vulnerability of the existing buildings. An accurate evaluation of the seismic vulnerability constitutes the point of departure for the implementation of the necessary mitigation strategies aimed at increasing the seismic resilience of the cities. The design of structures based on unsaturated soil mechanics is desirable because it reduces cost and it is by far a more sustainable approach. The research community has identified the Soil-Water Characteristic Curve as the most important soil property when dealing with unsaturated conditions. This soil property is unpopular among practitioners because the laboratory testing takes an appreciable amount of time. Several author

The effects of ethanol on the brain are far reaching. However, the effect of ethanol on synaptic plasticity has not yet been fully explored. Although it has been established that ethanol inhibits long-term potentiation (LTP) in the CA1 of the hippocampus, before our study, it was unclear whether long-term depression (LTD) was attenuated or enhanced by ethanol. We found that different concentrations of ethanol attenuated LTD in the CA1 (CA1-LTD) at younger ages. At more mature ages, CA1-LTD was completely blocked by ethanol. In contrast to this, LTD in the dentate gyrus (DG-LTD) was not sig

Plasticity in spinal networks has been proposed as a means to permit motor skill learning and recovery after central nervous system disorders. This plasticity is significantly driven by input from the periphery (Wolpaw & Carp, 2006). For instance, attenuation of soleus Hoffmann (H) reflex can last beyond the period of different types of conditioning via putative presynaptic inhibition (Brooke et al., 1997). Interestingly, rhythmic arm cycling can also attenuate soleus H-reflex via interlimb connections and presynaptic pathways (Frigon, Collins, & Zehr, 2004). However, it remains to be st
