Full textThe composting has proven a good alternative in the management, treatment and valorization of municipal solid waste. Depending on the raw materials used for its production, the product may be considered organic fertilizer/corrective to be used in agriculture activities. The present work was developed aiming the evaluation of the MSW composting evolution, by the determination of physical, physical-chemical and biological parameters, in biomass collected along the process, as well as the assessment of stability/maturation degree of the final compost. For each collected sample it was also introduced two different types of biodegradable/compostable plastics, each sample corresponding to a particular phase of stability/curing of composting process in order to evaluate the influence of these plastics in the samples that was obtained and the possible occurrence of biodegradation of plastics in the several phases analyzed. The results showed that the parameters fulfilled the existing literature, allowing the compound the designation of matured/stabilized. The biological characterization of the final compost showed that it presents phytotoxicity, which fact is related to the presence of ammoniacal nitrogen and high electrical conductivity. The introduction of biodegradable plastics in the process didn’t affect any parameter analyzed, showing increasing degree of biodegradability over the course of analysis.

Sandwich panels are mainly used in construction for lightweight structures since their concept is appropriate due to extremely high in-plane and flexural stiffness to weight ratios. However, low structural freedom and high environmental burdens of core material in sandwich panels such as fiberglass, and chemically synthesized foams have retarded a wide use in various areas. Recently it has been suggested that the better performance and economic, environmental benefits could be possibly achieved by using hybrid sandwich panels comprising non-traditional pairs of materials for sandwich panels. Therefore, in this paper, a cork-based plastic composite material has been proposed as a new core material and the possibility for substituting existing core materials have been explored by investigation on its mechanical properties, economic benefit, and environmental impact. Several mechanical testing were carried out on the cork composite and Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic (GFRP) to determine the mechanical properties and compare their relative performances. By conducting property-limited design cases with the obtained mechanical properties, how they will perform in light, stiff panel application was investigated. Economic analysis was demonstrated with a table top application by using rigidity equality condition. Finally, Eco-impact of the cork composite was investigated by conducting Life Cycle Assessment. The result proved that the cork composite is competitive with other core materials.

Full textWhen the separation of scales in random media does not hold, the representative volume element (RVE) of deterministic continuum mechanics does not exist in the conventional sense, and new concepts and approaches are needed. This subject is discussed here in the context of microstructures of two types - planar random chessboards, and planar random inclusion-matrix composites -- with microscale behavior being elastic-plastic-hardening (power-law). The microstructure is assumed to be spatially homogeneous and ergodic. Principal issues under consideration are those of yield and incipient plastic flow of statistical volume elements (SVE) on mesoscales, and the scaling trend of SVE to the RVE response on macroscale. Indeed, the SVE responses under uniform displacement (or traction) boundary conditions bound from above (respectively, below) the RVE response, and we show via extensive simulations in plane stress that the larger is the mesoscale, the tighter are both bounds. However, the mesoscale flows under both kinds of loading do not, in general, display normality. Also, with the limitation imposed by currently available computational resources, we do not recover normality (or even a trend towards it) when studying the largest possible SVE domains.
The second topic is the geodesic (i.e., shortest path) character of strain fields occurring in elasto-plastic response of planar inclusion-matrix composites. The composites' spatially random morphology is created by generating the disk centers through a sequential inhibition process based on a poisson point field in plane. Both phases (inclusions and matrix) are elastic-plastic-hardening with the matrix being more compliant and weaker than the inclusions, and perfect bonding everywhere. A quantitative comparison of a response pattern obtained by computational micromechanics with that found only by mathematical morphology indicates that (i) the regions of plastic flow are very close to geodesics, and (ii) a purely geometric, and orders of magnitude more rapid than by computational mechanics assessment of these regions is possible.

Full textPersonnel who work on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier are exposed to extreme levels of jet engine noise often in excess of 140 decibels (dB). The current circumaural hearing protective devices (CAHPD) employed by flight deck crewmen are inadequate for the level of protection required for these extreme levels of noise. Fiber-reinforced thermoset polymer composite (FRPC) materials such as aramid fibers used in body armor, have high theoretical values of acoustic impedance due to a fundamentally high modulus of elasticity and may offer a superior level of hearing protection over original equipment (OE) thermoplastic CAHPDs. The objective of this project was to measure and evaluate the attenuation of CAHPD’s constructed from FRPC materials. FRPC CAHPD ear cups were paired with OE thermoplastic CAHPD ear cups of equal shape and thickness, and the protected and unprotected A-weighted sound pressure level (SPL) was measured in continuous and impulse noise environments >80 dBA using a JOLENE manikin. These data were evaluated for paired differences between the protected and unprotected mean SPL, and OE protected and FRPC protected mean SPL and indicates that OE thermoplastic CAHPDs provide greater sound attenuation of continuous noise >80 dBA and aramid FRPC CAHPDs provide greater sound attenuation of impulse noise >80 dBA.
