Full textThe negative environmental impact of plastic bags has recently been brought up in the EU but also locally in Borås. The EU considers that plastic bags are hurtful for the environment and has developed directive to reduce the consumption of plastic bags which all member states must follow. In order to be able to make the correct decisions it is necessary to have the accurate information of what measures are necessary to reduce consumption. In this thesis, the aim is to compare the environmental impact of plastic bags compared to bags in various materials and to review how plastic bags are managed today, present a method for how to collect plastic bags for recycling in Borås and investigate whether it is environmentally viable. The results show that the determination of the environmental impact of different bags is a very complex issue because so many factors must be considered. We also see that the introduction of a separate recycling system for plastic bags is not the ultimate method when it would complicate logistics and require compression, to reduce their volume. The existing recycling system for plastic which blends hard plastic and soft plastic, is more convenient to use as it provides a denser mixture.
Ruth, Therese. "Att göra det enklare att öppna plastpåsar : Ett produktutvecklingsprojekt på uppdrag av Binar Elektronik AB." Thesis, Karlstads universitet, Institutionen för ingenjörsvetenskap och fysik, 2013. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-28022.
Full textThe report deals with the subject of making it easier to open plastic bags and is commissioned by Leif Gustavsson at Binar Elektronik AB in Trollhättan. The work is performed within the course Degree project for Degree of Bachelor of Science in Innovation and Design Engineering, MSGC12 at the Faculty of Health, Nature and Engineering Science at Karlstad University in the spring of 2013. Today the opening of the plastic bags often is performed by a thumb-index finger grip that shears apart the walls of the bag. The research shows that the need for a solution that makes it easier to open different types of plastic bags in stores and within households is very high for people with and without disabilities. Both from a usage perspective when the operation requires a high motor performance but also from a contamination perspective when fingers often have to be soaked with saliva to provide sufficient friction against the bag to shear it up. The individual then ingests the bacteria she has on her hand and passing her oral cavity further on when she touches another object. Although a few patents were found within the area there are no solutions available in the market. Based on the requirements from the employer, the author’s own terms, what is observed in the store and emerged from interviews with experienced seller, health nurse, occupational therapist, researcher at the social services and in conversation with the Swedish Rheumatism Association a product specification was made. The specification includes requirements on ease of use, to be managed in-store and in households, to minimize the spread of infection, to help the disabled and to allow large series manufacturing at a low cost. Concept generation was performed together with fellow students who are familiar with the methodology of the creative process and with rheumatics who are well acquainted with the need of making it easier to open plastic bags. Approximately thirty conceptual solutions are developed, which is being evaluated by means of elimination, relative decision-making and criterion-weight matrixes and web charts based on the product specification previously defined. The final choice of solution is configured and prototypes constructed. Feedback from the user leads to the final product design and the design was protected. The product causes shearing with its asymmetrical U shape by stretching its arms in different directions during compression while its mouth is provided with friction material that allows the walls of the bag to be sheared apart. The product's simple design makes it easier to open plastic bags while at the same time minimizing the spread of infection and allowing large series manufacturing at a low cost. The simplicity also makes it possible to provide indirect protection of the technical function through design. Although the product’s materials, manufacturing and dimension needs to be specified more accurately by tests to confirm that the design allows adequate shear to open a plastic bag.

Full textThis study examines consumers’ behavior in the purchase of grocery bags in food stores. Consumption of all types of bags is a problem in several ways, and this report will examine consumers’ knowledge about resource and energy use in manufacturing, pro-environmental behavior and consumers’ suggestions to behavioral change while purchasing grocery bags. The purpose is to investigate whether knowledge causes the consumer to act in a certain way. To achieve the purpose, a survey was conducted, both in a selected ICA store and on Facebook. The survey contained questions about consumption such as, what bag consumers usually buy and how often. Even how the consumer went to the store is of interest as well as the costumers’ knowledge previous to the study regarding resource utilization in manufacturing. Lastly, the consumers’ attitude towards a potential ban was asked for, as well as what could make the person reduce his or her own consumption. The study found that there is no difference in knowledge between those who buy bags and those who do not. This leads to the conclusion that there is a value-action gap, one is aware that the consumption is not sustainable, but one does not act according to his or her knowledge. Thus, the most effective way of reducing consumption is not considered to be a better knowledge of environmental impact. Instead, a ban on plastic bags based on oil is preferred. Hence, environmental bags and Swedish paper bags would be more promising options. Relatively few of those who participated in the survey are against a ban on disposable bags. Because even the consumption of environmental bags and Swedish paper bags has a negative impact on the environment, a reduction of consumption of all bags is therefore preferable. This can be achieved with an increase in price.

Full textPrimed information is more accessible in memory and can thus easily be recognized. Prerequisites for priming include subliminal perception, goals, reliability, non alert and non habitually. The study aims to gain broader understanding regarding subliminal primings influence. The purpose of this thesis was to see whether the customers in a store could be manipulated, primed, to take a specific colour on plastic bags at checkout and if there are any gender differences in the effect of priming. Participants were 490 customers, of whom 333 men. Two different signs with different colours were placed at the checkout. It was noted if customers chose the primed colour of the plastic bag or not. The results showed a significant difference, the participants chose the same colour on the plastic bag as the sign. No gender differences were found. Research shows that priming effects can be opposed if people make themselves aware of potential unconscious influences.

Full textThis study analyzed how the visual communication and marketing regarding Systembolaget’s plastic bags appearance and how it has changed over the years. The purpose with this study was to create an understanding regarding the alteration in relation to the changes in the development of society and marketing. The idea was to add knowledge to history regarding the development of visual communication and marketing. The plastic bag has always been a key part in Systembolaget’s marketing and has had the same overall formatthroughout the decades. What has been changed – on the other hand – is its graphic appearance. This leads to an interest to study how the design has developed in relation to societal changes, and thereby create a wider understanding of the history of visual communication and marketing as a field. This study has been conducted with a quantitative content analysis of Systembolaget’s plastic bags. Toaddress the question at issue this study used several variables that involved element, color and communication. This was to identify the changes of the plastic bag regarding visual communication and marketing over time, but also how it was related or affected by the history of society and marketing. After a query to Systembolaget the empirical data, which consisted of over a hundred plastic bags from Systembolaget between 1970 and 2018, was assigned to us. Certain delimitations have been done. We only examined the bags made of plastic, and only the front of the plastic bag. The results that could be read from the study were that there was a big change from the 70s until today, regarding the communication of the plastic bag. The expressions and messages has changed in the same pace as the development of society and marketing. When the plastic bag first came, the content had a big variation. The amount of images, text and color changed a lot during a decade. The message on the plastic bags concerned current topics from its present day. The main message went from communicating risks andsafety to today communicating Systembolaget’s vision as a company.

Full textPlastic pollution has been a problem since the 1950s due to the material’s durable and persistant characteristics and slow degradability, and these characteristics are also the reason for the material’s popularity. An estimated 100 billion plastic bags are introduced to the european markets every year, with a significant amount of these ending up in oceans and other bodies of water. Plastic pollution harms biodiversity as marine species consume plastic particles which are then transported through the food chain. To counteract this problem, the European Union member states strive to limit the amount of plastic carrier bags being used to 40 per person and year, by 2025. As a means to achieve this goal, the Swedish government introduced a tax which increased the retail price of plastic carrier bags by 3 SEK as of May 1st 2020. This study aims to identify consumers intended response to this tax, and what factors might prevent a possible change of behaviour. To better understand this, seven interviews were carried out with consumers from different households, in which they were asked to share their shopping routines and expected response to the tax. The results showed that while the majority of the consumers expressed a positive attitude towards the tax, few had any intention of reducing their own consumption of the plastic carrier bag, primarily due to the many irreplacable functions provided by the material.
