Abstract:
The theory of this thesis focuses on particulars of multi-sided platform businesses with special emphasis put on early stage start-ups. The goal is to capture crucial findings and fuse them together to point out specifics which apply only for start-ups that are developed in form of multi-sided platform business. This thesis should provide guidance to all entrepreneurs considering such new business formations. It aims at showing them the most important points leading to positive value creation in multi-sided platform businesses. Specifically, it explains the strategic points hidden behind pricing and network effects utilization. At the same time it depicts what are the unnecessary distractions which just destroy attention and consume time and effort. Consequently, these findings are tested on practical example, where real start-up is modelled using this theoretical framework. Such real application points out strong and weak points. Consequently, the optimal framework is derived based on prior findings. The main suggestions point out what should be examined further by the theory and where the research captured enough knowledge.

Abstract:

In the last century there have been drastic changes in the way products are developed and manufactured – manufacturing technologies have advanced and at the same time global competition has increased tremendously. For companies to survive, the name of the game has been to offer greater product variety, in more frequent intervals, and for a lower price. Mass production has been replaced by mass customization, where the basic rule is that the customers should get exactly what they want, at the time they want it.

A partial remedy to concurrently lower cost as well as provide customers with a greater number of variants has been to use platforms*. Platforms in the manufacturing industry have at times been highly advantageous while in other instances they have caused more problems than benefit. Platforms exist in different contexts and scope, and it has been found that companies need to improve their platform management skills in order to increase the general level of competitive advantage.

This dissertation proposes that a company can considerably improve the management of its platforms by increasing its holistic understanding of them. To do this, platforms are viewed from different viewpoints that aim to both display the effect a platform has on its surroundings, as well as the effect its surroundings has on it. This approach has been incorporated into a method called the PAMatrix (Platform Assessment Matrix) that uses a synthesis of cross-functional, subjective expert opinion and consensus based decision making.

The PAMatrix method uses already existing implicit and explicit knowledge to improve decision making on how to manage each individual platform. First a set of platforms are identified that the company views as key enablers for creating a competitive advantage. The platforms are then assessed from several different viewpoints – each capturing a partial evaluation of the platforms’ status or effect. After an assessment of a viewpoint, each stakeholder individually suggests a specific strategic action plan along with a weight factor of how important the viewpoint is to the overall assessment of the specific platform. Finally, the discrete action plan suggestions are collected and jointly assessed and debated – based on which, a final strategic action plan can be made.

The method has been tested in three industrial situations, where its use has been considered beneficial and platform understanding has increased.

* In this dissertation, a platform is defined as the set of core assets that are reused to create a competitive advantage.

Abstract:
From before enclosure, platforms have defined use and purpose within the physical and social world. The demarcation of space through levelling, texture and surface acting together to both enable and restrict use, platforms would later give their name to the socio political construct of the platform as ideological stage. Pier Vittorio Aureli and Martino Tattara write on this at length in the text Platforms: Architecture and the Use of the Ground, where they discuss the relationship between the physical and the public or social aspect of the platform, recognising its ability to both give voice and take it away, and the role they play in creating social asymmetry. The first part of this diploma explores, through novel methods of engagement, this social aspect of public space. By embracing distance and dialogue, it uses correspondence to investigate the physical and social structures that come together to delineate and define the hazy idea of what constitutes public space. This diploma chooses to pose these questions through the lens of cooking and the shared practices that accompany it, manifesting itself in the second part as a meanwhile use of a disused public building that celebrates local food culture, alongside a speculative proposal for an unprogrammed urban terrain that plays on the notion of platforming.
What if such platforms could provide a canvas for a more spontaneous, democratic public life, one where use, access and public rights are less regulated and defined?

Too Good To Go Portugal.
The platform phenomena is central to the contemporary socio-economic paradigm. In a few decades, the platform business model has managed to disrupt and fundamentally change multiple industries. Although this topic is being thoroughly studied by contemporary academia, it still yields discoveries. This research aims to contribute to that effort by exploring the role of partnerships in the internationalization of digital platforms, from the points of view of Strategic Management and International Business. It draws from a literature review on the platform business model and the internationalization process of platform firms to formulate an overarching research question: How are local platform ecosystems established and developed? To answer this question an explanatory case-study based on two highly contrasting cases: Microsoft Portugal and Too Good To Go Portugal is developed. This work finds that partnerships can develop platform ecosystems and create business opportunities in foreign markets. Platform firms invest and empower partners with tools and knowledge. Partner is a catch-all term that includes multiple firms playing diverse roles, organized in hierarchical fashion. Platforms can leverage on local and, sometimes, international partnerships to boost local competitiveness. Yet, international partnerships may not translate directly into local partnerships. Finally, factors such as the market credibility of the platform firm and its strategic attunement to the social, environmental, and ethical context may have a positive influence on platform diffusion in foreign user networks and ecosystems.

Abstract:
In mobile computing, there is variety of approaches to develop applications. One challenge is the diversity of mobile devices in the market and targeting more than one mobile device to develop applications. One approach to handle this is traditional, in which for every device there is a project carried out to develop application. Another method is the cross-platform application development which has been introduced in recent years. The purpose of this thesis is to explore if existing cross-platform frameworks can aid startup companies to develop cross-platform mobile apps. The research questions are 1) How can cross-platform frameworks be a viable approach for start-up companies in this respect? 2) What challenges and benefits do cross-platform approaches bring to developers? In order to answer the research questions, respondents from five small-sized and two large companies developing mobile apps are being interviewed. The results shows that cross-platform frameworks are good tools when developing mobile apps for multiple platforms, but are applicable to different degrees depending on the actual case. Challenges and benefits identified by the respondents mainly touched upon decreasing development time, and less coding effort, but also the uniqueness of Apple and Android products and difficulties in making developers switch to new languages.

Game Design is the process of creating a game, which includes defining its functionality, describing its composing elements, as well as transmiting these informations to the development team. The current work approaches the study of the Game Design present on multi-platform electronic games, analysing how they´re being designed. Being a maturing medium, the academic profile needed for its professionals still isn´t clearly defined, and its language and potencials haven´t been fully explored. The industry´s exorbitant financial return has made it conservative, blinding the creation of meaningful content. With the objective of identifying and justifying the Game Design decisions recurrent on multi-platform electronic games, it is questioned what characteristics affect the way theses games are percepted and played when in different platforms and situations, and which qualities of these situations must be considered during the creative and development processes. The study analyses the Game Design of four titles, comparing their different versions according to their uses on public, private and mobile contexts, through a point-of-view that corresponds to both player and designer.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the role of online platforms in relation to anti-progressive counterpublic dynamics. Counterpublicsare understood as alternative discursive arenas that form in response to exclusion from the wider public sphere. The relevance of counterpublics derives both from their ability to influence mainstream political discourse and from how anti-progressive counterpublics have been found to contribute to real-life violence. As the internet becomes an increasingly important venue for political discussion and contestation, the public sphere is extended online. This study explores how platforms can be seen as enabling (or constraining) the dual function of online counterpublics, i.e. as both inward and outward-oriented in relation to opposing publics, by examining the anti-feminist online community known as “Men Going Their Own Way” (MGTOW). The role of platforms is understood in terms of platform affordances, and netnographic methods were used to study these in relation to two online platforms. The results show that the two platforms presented different opportunities for the MGTOW counterpublic to some extent, suggesting that this counterpublic is able to utilise platforms for different purposes. Twitter was found to be particularly suitable for the outward-oriented function, i.e. for interacting with and opposing other publics, while mgtow.com was shown to be fertile ground for the inward-oriented function, and in that sense enabled contact between members in a way that contributed to the development of anti-progressive counterdiscourse.

Abstract:
Nowadays, decision-making is not only made in the office with a PC. With a dramatic increase of mobile devices (such as smartphones and tablets) and internet access, the approach to reaching and delivering key, strategic data has changed over the last decade. The diploma thesis analyses the market of business intelligence platforms, dedicated for mobile devices, by comparing selected vendors in this segment. The first, theoretically oriented chapters focus on explaining the key concepts of business intelligence and mobile business intelligence and appropriate context, especially the growing market of mobile devices and internet access availability. Furthermore, the theoretical part is followed by a list of criteria, amongst which will selected platforms be compared. These criteria include not only a user view, but also a technical view of the compared products -- IBM, MicroStrategy, SAP and Oracle. Two methods are used to evaluate the best product. The first comparison is based on average scores gained across all criteria, while the second method applied is a pairwise comparison. The following, practically oriented chapter contains a step-by-step user guide of downloading, installing, configuring and especially the process of creating and deploying reports and documents suited directly for mobile devices, such as the iPad. The whole process is described for the winning platform MicroStrategy, which not only earned the highest scores, but also won the pairwise comparison over all other platforms. This thesis serves as basic orientation in the young market of business intelligence platforms enhanced with dedicated modules for mobile devices and carries a recommendation for one of them to select.

Abstract:
Podstatná část práce obsahuje přístup k modelování neurčitých parametrů dynamického modelu Stewartovy platformy a stejnosměrného motoru Maxon RE 35 a jeho výsledky.

Abstract:
Abstract The Swedish railway has during many years received low customer satisfaction scores. Reasons for this are reliability, service and information concerns. The focus of this master thesis lies on the railway platform. The platform is an important part to the factors above as its information and facilities, which constitute a part of the service before the trip, could contribute in causing delays and reliability issues. This study investigates the behaviour of passengers on railway platforms and the effect that information, seats and entrances along the platform has on that behaviour. The goal is to find advantages and disadvantages and propose improvements in a Swedish setting. Platforms and trains that have been studied are in Stockholm, Sweden and Tokyo, Japan. Platform distributions and individual behaviour on the platforms are recorded with three different and relatively easy methods. Results of the Swedish study show aggregate trends where passengers tend to cluster around entrances and seats. Many Swedish passengers do not believe themselves to have enough information to know where their car will stop. These passengers do mostly not know that information exist and on average stand much further away from their closest door, when the train arrives, compared to passengers that believe themselves to know where their car will stop along the platform. The results of the Japanese study show that almost all passengers stand close to their door. From the findings in not only this, but also other studies, four aggregate properties in order to get better railway platforms are finally presented. These properties are reliability, clarity and availability of information and good location of seats and other facilities. Suggestions for tangible improvements for the Swedish railway platforms are finally given. Among these improvements are new information screens and standardized information and stopping position of trains.

Abstract:
Background – Digitalization and the utilization of ICTs in healthcare have revolutionized the healthcare industry through digital healthcare platforms (DHP). ICTs and DHP’s are highly beneficial for those who have the ability to use them, meanwhile increasing the digital segregation for those who cannot, e.g., elderly generations. Although, elderly generations can particularly benefit from utilizing DHP’s, e.g., enabling independent living. Furthermore, the elderly population is expected to grow globally in the upcoming years, which affects governmental expenditures on healthcare. Purpose – The aim of this study is to investigate what causes elderly not to adopt and use DHP’s, i.e., investigate and develop a deeper understanding of the central barriers for elderly. Furthermore, the second aim is to investigate how DHP providers better can facilitate increased adoption and usage among the elderly generations. Method – This study followed an abductive research approach of a single case company that offers healthcare services through a digital platform. To answer research questions, we primarily used a qualitative research method as well as quantitative data to strengthen our findings. In total, 22 qualitative interviews were conducted with respondents over 65. The interviews were divided between previous users of digital health platforms and non-users. The quantitative data were analyzed through SPSS where uni- and bivariate analysis was performed. Findings – Our finding disclosed that elderly experience mainly two barriers for adoption of DHP’s among elderly: negative attitudes and technology anxiety and one barrier for both adoption and usage: trust. This adds to the previous literature which has not made any distinction between adoption and usage of DHP’s among elderly. Furthermore, this study provides direct development suggestions that can enable increased adoption and usage. Abstract:
In today’s platform economy, the postal industry has been disrupted with emerging technologies and changing consumer needs. While the physical letter volumes continue to decrease, postal operators seek new sources of customer value through digital innovations. Digital mailbox is an example of a multisided platform that creates value by connecting two or more customer groups and facilitating interaction or transactions between them. In order to successfully attract both supply and demand to these platforms, the platform provider needs to understand both sides of the market The purpose of this study was to increase the understanding of the needs and expectations of the biggest consumer group of the future, Generation Z, regarding their interaction with different sectors in the Finnish society. Furthermore, the research aim was to shed light on the possible implications that these needs and expectations would have on platform providers. The context for the study was Finland. The study was conducted as a case study for PostNord, a communications and logistics supplier in the Nordics. A qualitative research design included conducting 12 semi-structured interviews with Generation Z representatives, born between 1995 and 2001. Additionally, a mirroring workshop with industry experts was conducted in order to include the perspective of the case company. The results were analysed using a thematic analysis method. The findings of this study show that Generation Z’s choice for device and channels is contextual, depending on the importance and urgency of the matter. Gen Z prefers to receive their communication on one platform instead of many, and often on mobile application. This generational cohort has high expectations regarding the speed of the communication. They expect fast responses that also enable a meaningful dialogue, yet on their own terms. The findings indicate that Gen Z values the human element even in digital communication. They want to receive information that is not only relevant to them, but arrives on the right time and comes from a competent, familiar source. These findings have implications on not only PostNord as a platform provider, but all the potential ecosystem partners.

Abstract:
Nowadays, it is of crucial importance for the manufacturing industry to be prepared for the application and understanding of autonomous mobile robots. Given this fact, educational institutions have to provide knowledge and experience to students. These autonomous mobile robots are made and controlled using different platforms and programming languages. Currently, the University of Skövde wishes to expand the range of tools to be available for building and experimenting with autonomous robots. For this purpose, this thesis project has two main goals. The first goal is finding the best available robotic platform for small scale, self-built, programmable robots. Such a platform has to include all the hardware necessary for later implementation with the software. The platform is evaluated in this thesis following different criteria. The second goal is to build a robot using the chosen platform. The robot has to perform a certain task taking advantage of its specific hardware. The development of the task has been achieved using the Robot Operative System (ROS). This thesis provides step by step instructions of how to build the platform and perform the task.

Abstract:
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Engineering Systems Division, 2005.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 155-162).
The research contributes to the uncertainty management of engineering systems by proposing and demonstrating a way to implement flexible platform strategy to respond to future uncertainties. In today's competitive market, where market segments are becoming more fragmented, pressure to develop and market diverse sets of products is increasing. To meet such market needs and reduce production cost at the same time, product platform strategy has been implemented in several different industries. Using a core set of common platform elements and variant-specific unique elements, a family of products can be produced to satisfy various market segments. However, the growing cost of platform development and undesired side effects of the strategy (e.g. performance tradeoff, cannibalization) is forcing companies to design their platforms with flexibility, so they can accommodate product variants, differentiate these variants, and be economically flexible to respond to specified future uncertainties. This thesis introduces a design process to architect flexible product platforms. The proposed process is demonstrated in two automotive application case studies.
(cont.) In the first case study, a vehicle floor pan is designed to satisfy two different length requirements, while being economically robust to future specification change and component demand. The second case study investigates a vehicle platform, where the flexible body in white (BIW) platform is designed for a family of three vehicle variants through identification of critical elements subset. Results showed that the flexible BIW platform is less profitable than the inflexible BIW platform, but when the degree of future uncertainty increases, the flexible design eventually becomes more profitable. This research provides additional examples that yet again confirms the general proposition "flexibility gains value as the degree of uncertainty increases."

Abstract:
The concept of \"platform\" has been explored in many studies on product development, technology strategy, and industrial economy. The use of platforms within companies and, more recently, in mediating the activities within clusters or ecosystems of businesses, has been recognized as highly significant for the management of new businesses, for the development of new products, and for innovation. Google, Facebook, SAP, Microsoft and Apple are examples of companies in the software industry whose platforms have inspired many other businesses to develop complementary products and services. By systematically analyzing the literature on platforms, combining bibliometric analyses with content analyses, it was possible to observe the existence of gaps to be filled concerning the theory of the evolution of platforms, and the processes of organizational adaptation that platform-based companies undergo in the development of their products. Aiming at extending the theory, the objective of this work has been that of investigating capabilities associated to the relationships between platform owners and developers as a means to understand how platforms evolve from internal platforms to external platforms. The methodology chosen for this work was a qualitative study conducted via case study of multiple cases with national and international companies present in the Brazilian software industry. Six examples of software platform owners were examined, along with sixteen developers that contribute with products and services that extend those platforms. The results of the study make a few contributions to this topic; the systematic review of the literature, for example, allows a better, clearer understanding of the evolution of the concept of platform, identifying trends and emerging themes for research. The case studies contribute to identify and classify a set of capabilities by type of platform, considering the perspective of the owner and that of the developers. And as the main contribution of this work, both for theory and for practice, we have the proposition of an extended theoretical framework that indicates that, in order to evolve from an internal platform to an external one, the platform owners develop certain capabilities associated to their relationship with software developers, according to the type of platform. Regarding developers, this framework points to the development of capabilities adapted to the type of platform. We hope that this work will contribute to the ongoing debate about platforms and capabilities.

Abstract:
The Ph.D. thesis is focused on using the fuzzy logic for control of a parallel manipulator based on a Stewart platform. The proposed mechanism makes possible to simulate the physiological movements of the human body and observe degradation processes of the cord implants. Parallel manipulators such as a Stewart platform represent a completely parallel kinematic mechanism that has major differences from typical serial link robots. However, they have some drawbacks of relatively small workspace and difficult forward kinematic problems. Generally, forward kinematic of a parallel manipulators is very complicated and difficult to solve. This thesis presents a simple and efficient approach to design simulation model of forward kinematic based on Takagi-Sugeno type fuzzy inference system. The control system of the parallel manipulator id based on state-space and fuzzy logic controllers. The proposed fuzzy controller uses a Sugeno type fuzzy inference system (FIS) which is derived from discrete position state-space controller with an input integrator. The controller design method is based on anfis (adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system) training routine. It utilizes a combination of the least-squares method and the backpropagation gradient descent method for training FIS membership function parameters to emulate a given training data set. The proposed fuzzy logic controllers are used for the control of a linear actuator. The capabilities of the designed control system are shown on verification experiment.

Abstract:
A special type of singular Stewart-Gough Platform exhibits continuous motion of one or more degrees of freedom, while all of its six or more legs are locked at fixed length. The equation describing point motion is introduced and then applied to parallel platforms. Line geometric analysis shows that all legs remain in a continuously varying linear complex, linear congruence, or quadric. Base and platform joints are restricted to lie on two congruent, skewed hyperbolids of one sheet. One of these constitutes those points on the rigid body of the platform that move on spheres, the other, those on the fixed base which constitute the sphere centres. An equivalent mechanism is developed and used to visualize the design parameters of the motion. The selection, as platform joints, of points on a line generator results in a two degree of freedom platform. Specific designs of such overconstrained mechanisms are investigated and illustrated. Line geometry is used, to explain the special relationship among the platform legs. Numerical examples are given and illustrated.

Abstract:
With the vast increase in smartphones, there have been an increasing number of opportunities growing in the app industry. One in particular is the way we deal with money. There are huge overheads in the current payment systems around the world particularly in the United States, many of which include large transaction fees. Many new businesses have grown to solve these inefficiencies and create a new platform that provides a new user experience, security, and convenience among many other things. However, many of these platforms are still centralized, making them more susceptible to attacks. This thesis goes over the various methods of payments, starting from their origins and discusses their flaws and ways they are being improved. This study explains where payment platforms are going and how they line up against other platforms in terms of security and usability. We look at the origins of credit cards and why the US is lagging behind other countries in credit card security. Digital wallets like PayPal, Venmo, Square, etc. have done a remarkable job, but still have room for improvement in terms of security and usage. I try to solve these problems with the mobile application AnyCoin by bringing one platform that houses different types of digital wallets. The goal of this application was to grow a large user base and collect data off the transaction for future analysis and advertising. This study goes through an in depth analysis on the application from the iv perspective of merchants and consumers to understand what users are looking for in digital wallets. Decentralized platforms and crypto-currencies like Bitcoin have also created different ways to send money by creating a trustless system that does not depend on any central authority. I discuss what Bitcoin is and exactly how it works and the flaws in the current system. Mining is the process that puts Bitcoin into circulation and secures the network. However, as more customized hardware is released, Bitcoin will fall subject to becoming more centralized, and unfortunately become heavy regulated if it is to be used as a currency. Ethereum is a new technology that takes the concepts of Bitcoin and creates a platform for a developer to create a decentralized application. I create a few contracts that show how we can create a decentralized version of PayPal that works using other crypto- currencies. Ethereum is still in its alpha stage and has yet to be released to the public, but has already improved on the problems that Bitcoin and other crypto-currencies hold.

In the last decade, there has been a surge in online platforms for providing a wide variety of services. These platforms face an array of challenges that can be mitigated with appropriate modeling and the use of optimization tools. In this thesis, we examine, model, and provide solutions to some of the key challenges. First, we focus on the problem of intelligent SMS routing faced by several online platforms today. In a dynamically changing environment, platforms need to carefully choose SMS aggregators to have a high number of text messages being delivered to users at a low cost. To model this problem, we consider a novel variant of the multi-armed bandit (MAB) problem, MAB with cost subsidy, which models many real-life applications where the learning agent has to pay to select an arm and is concerned about optimizing cumulative costs and rewards.
We show that naive generalizations of existing MAB algorithms like Upper Confidence Bound and Thompson Sampling do not perform well for the SMS routing problem. For an instance with K arms and time horizon T, we then establish a fundamental lower bound of [omega](K¹/³T²/³) on the performance of any online learning algorithm for this problem, highlighting the hardness of our problem in comparison to the classical MAB problem. We also present a simple variant of explore-then-commit and establish near-optimal regret bounds for this algorithm. Lastly, we perform numerical simulations to understand the behavior of a suite of algorithms for various instances and recommend a practical guide to employ different algorithms. Second, we focus on the problem of making real-time personalized recommendations which are now needed in just about every online setting, ranging from media platforms to e-commerce to social networks.
While the challenge of estimating user preferences has garnered significant attention, the operational problem of using such preferences to construct personalized offer sets to users is still a challenge, particularly in modern settings with a massive number of items and a millisecond response time requirement. Thus motivated, we propose an algorithm for personalized offer set optimization that runs in time sub-linear in the number of items while enjoying a uniform performance guarantee. Our algorithm works for an extremely general class of problems and models of user choice that includes the mixed multinomial logit model as a special case. Our algorithm can be entirely data-driven and empirical evaluation on a massive content discovery dataset shows that our implementation indeed runs fast and with increased performance relative to existing fast heuristics.
Third, we study the problem of modeling purchase of multiple items (in online and offline settings) and utilizing it to display optimized recommendations, which can lead to significantly higher revenues as compared to capturing purchase of only a single product in each transaction. We present a parsimonious multi-purchase family of choice models called the BundleMVL-K family, and develop a binary search based iterative strategy that efficiently computes optimized recommendations for this model. We establish the hardness of computing optimal recommendation sets and characterize structural properties of the optimal solution. The efficacy of our modeling and optimization techniques compared to competing solutions is shown using several real-world datasets on multiple metrics such as model fit, expected revenue gains, and run-time reductions. Fourth, we study the problem of A-B testing for online platforms.
Unlike traditional offline A-B testing, online platforms face some unique challenges such as sequential allocation of users into treatment groups, large number of user covariates to balance, and limited number of users available for each experiment, making randomization inefficient. We consider the problem of optimally allocating test subjects to either treatment with a view to maximize the precision of our estimate of the treatment effect. Our main contribution is a tractable algorithm for this problem in the online setting, where subjects must be assigned as they arrive, with covariates drawn from an elliptical distribution with finite second moment. We further characterize the gain in precision afforded by optimized allocations relative to randomized allocations and show that this gain grows large as the number of covariates grows.
